    If you see comments here about investing or brokers, they are scams. Videos about cryptocurrencies, evidently including ones that are just about the underlying technology/math, are hotbeds for attracting nefarious actors preying on the impressionable.
    Also, hi! If you’re new to this channel, most of it is about visualizing math. I get it, you probably landed here searching for how BTC works, not to spend your afternoon getting pulled into learning about, say, prime numbers or problem-solving, but if you have a moment take a look at the rest of the channel, you may enjoy what you find.

    Here's the supplemental video about understanding just how big 2^256 is: krplus.net/bidio/g52CeZ1zZ5bZn4o
    The basic idea is to get a feel for what 2^32 (about 4 billion) multiplied by itself 8 times feels like, building up to a comically absurd computer that would be needed to break 256-bit security.

      Something that should be obvious to any computer scientist: This is terrible in practice. It wastes the same amount of energy every 10 minutes regardless of how many transactions are there. This amount of energy is only decided by how much energy miners want to waste: the answer is as much as possible, while still having a profit. So every 10 minutes miners can spend 6 bitcoins worth of electricity and still have profit (0.25 btc). The more expensive crypto gets, the more energy it will waste.

    • @rrestoring_faith

      @Alberto T.
      Yeah, it's not scalable.
      Note that proof of work is one solution to the problem; there are many other ways of doing it. (Ex/ proof of time, proof of stake, proof of burn, etc...). Also, if the amount of time was reduced to say 0.01 seconds instead of 10 minutes to make it more practical, there will be too many forks & network spam.
      The blockchain itself also has poor scalability, though, considering that transactions from a single individual are spread out and all stored separately.
      It is a neat idea. There are just too many downsides.

    • @kseriousr
      @kseriousr 2 년 전 +1

      @Tobi I'd probably go with centralized and regulated currencies because they seem way less volatile, reliable and secure. And if cryptocoins ever become the go to currency, central authorities and the wealthy will centralize their hold on it, so I don't see how that's ever going to become a better alternative. Maybe the players and the chips would be different but the game would be the same.

    • @kseriousr
      @kseriousr 2 년 전

      @Tobi Inflation is good when regulated. Without gentle inflation, economy and money flow stagnates. Wealth hording isn't good for you. There's a reason gold standards had to go away. Maybe look into the topic.

      I think the first thing to get down is the notion of decentralized ledgers. An understanding of where the actual bitcoins are in the whole process is vital to understanding what is going on. Everything else is just applying cryptography to deal with the various security problems that these decentralized ledgers would otherwise have.

Like if I wanted to start mining do I need a friend in the network who can connect me? Or is there some bitcoin authority giving out keys and adding them to the network, so they know who to ping if they win the lottery, and so others know the ping them if they've won?

    10:00 "The history of transactions is the currency" interesting
    Edit: 17:30 I love how I now know what a block chain is, and it wasn't as mind blowing as people on the internet made it seem. And I'm pretty sure blockchains are done in introductory coding courses. (Though not as complex).
    Edit 2: 18:25 so THAT'S why mining is profitable. I get it now. That circles back to the claim made ~10 mins in.
    Edit 3: 21:15 So, bitcoin 'authority', in essence, is computing power, and bitcoin 'identity' is the a blockchain made by the original owner?

      The worst bit is how most are too lazy to set the bots up so they change their profile pictures, so you have a bunch of default picture KRplus users talking to each other. I think even worst than that, is that they DO change the profile pictures of the bots, but they are all really high quality portraits of middle class business people smiling. I've once come across a comment chain that had two bots with the same profile picture of the same man, but under different names.

    Great explanation, I do have one question though.
    Why do miners need to look for an imput that gets an output with a certain amount of 0’s? What about 30+ 1’s…. Or isn’t any output number equally unique?

    • @OOO-ef1ps
      @OOO-ef1ps 2 년 전 +9

      I believe it'll be the same if certain amount of 1s have to be achieved. Starting 0's are just a universal way to find the proof-of-work. If instead an arbitrary string of bits is used/generated as "the password", there will need an additional mechanism to check the validity of the proof-of-work.

    • @jamesmatthew1903

      The number of 0's is the mining difficulty. Less miners would mean a key with fewer 0's is required. That's how a rate of 1 block per 10 minutes is maintained regardless of mining pool size.

    • @mikefochtman7164
      @mikefochtman7164 년 전 +16

      The '30 zeros' I believe is just arbitrary. But all miners and users have to agree that a valid block will have SOMETHING that is easily checked. If everyone agrees that the first 30 bits must be '10101010.....' the system would still have worked. And I suppose all zeros is as simple as any other pattern.
      They mention that the actual number of zeros needed has changed over time as computational power of 'miners' has grown. So now it's more than that, designed to keep the average time to verify/hash a block to about 10 minutes.

    Heisenberg, Schrodinger and Ohm are in a car
    They get pulled over. Heisenberg is driving and the cop asks him "Do you know how fast you were going?"
    "No, but I know exactly where I am" Heisenberg replies.
    The cop says "You were doing 55 in a 35." Heisenberg throws up his hands and shouts "Great! Now I'm lost!"
    The cop thinks this is suspicious and orders him to pop open the trunk. He checks it out and says "Do you know you have a dead cat back here?"

    • @EebstertheGreat
      @EebstertheGreat 2 년 전 +71

      @@vishank7 All of the work is "wasted" in the sense that it doesn't actually do anything useful. Its only purpose is to make it cost time and money to make a new block. As more people start mining, each block requires more effort to mine and gives less reward.
      It is a lot like gold mining in that way. If you are mining gold, all the digging you do that doesn't lead to finding any new gold is wasted. But usually there is no way to find gold without wasting a lot of time on misses. The more people mine, the deeper you have to go to find new gold, and the less you usually find. The difference between bitcoin mining and gold mining is that gold has some real utility outside of its value as currency, while bitcoins have no other utility. However, most gold ends up locked away in vaults anyway, so I think it's a reasonably good analogy.

    A few questions that really confused me:
    1. Why don't we remove the reward and have the transaction fee given to the miners only?
    2. Seems that it is up to every miners to pick which transactions to be included to the block by themselves. In this case, how do the miners know which transactions are already included in the blockchain?
    3. say person A & person B is trading via Bitcoin, do they wait for the transaction to be included into the blockchain before completing the trade?
    Thanks for you answering

    • @theopantamis9184
      @theopantamis9184 년 전 +2

      1. It will be the case once the halving of rewards will bring it to zero in 2140 (because of floating arithmetic limitation). The idea behind block subsidy (the new coins introduced to pay the miner) is that it is the "fairest way" to inject the money in the system in a spam-resistant way while also increasing the reliability of the network while the transacted value is still low at the beginning.
      2. Miners mine over the last block they know, meaning they include the hash of the last block they know in the block template they use each time they try to build a new valid block. That means they know all the transactions that were included in the block up to this last block they know. So they can include any others they know to produce a new longest valid branch of blocks
      3. If they use "onchain" payment which is described here yes, B must wait several confirmation before giving to A what he/she paid for or she can perform the attack shown at the end. However, for fast trade we now use a protocol called Lightning Network for which no confirmation are needed.

    • @theopantamis9184
      @theopantamis9184 2 년 전 +2

      Let consider blocks of the longest valid chain are in this order: A -> B -> C
      The hash of block A is in block B, the hash of block B is in block C the hash of bloc C is in the block after ....
      If you try to claim the ledger is A -> C -> B then something is wrong: the hash of block A should be in block C and the hash of block C should be in block B but block C contains the hash of block B and B contains the hash of block A.
      So you must change C and B content to replace the hashes. But if you change the content of block C, you also change its hash and it wil be a random number that will certainly not start with many zeros, so you must redo the work to find a number so that the hash of C starts with many zeros. Same with B and all the next blocks .... If you don't have a way to produce block faster than all the other miners combined, you will never succeed to make a your falsification legitimate...

      I'm old school I spent five minutes shy of two hours writing notes & drawing some of the diagrams to try my best to understand, I'm a home schooled researcher & I'm certainly not academic enough to say I'm a economist. The trust is to place your money & patiently wait - the excitement is watching that initial fee grow. I've never done this before.
