"The Last Starfighter" was the first movie to use CGI in a real film, it looked good enough that it litteraly helped to jumpstart the idea of CGI in all future movies; if not for this, who knows what kind of impractical magic the film industry would be using today.

Definitely one of my top five movies. Glad you really resonated with it, and - if I may offer unsolicited advice - re-watch it in a month or two. You'll pick up on completely obvious things you missed. Then, re-watch it a few months after that. The beauty of this film is that it reveals something new almost every time you watch it.

You can't imagine how powerful this movie was to a teen boy. This came out the year I graduated HS and it was so different from anything before. It's like a delineation of before sw and after sw. Btw I had the little collectable figures and the jawa and later yoda, were very valuable but I lost all that moving around. It's after Star Trek series but not movies I think

Never really got into reality shows too much myself. Some shows were downright awful from what little I saw. Shows where popularity > improvement, like those dancing shows. I guess the only shows that I really liked were Mythbusters, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Whose Line Is It Anyway. Don't think I watched anything else. Maybe I picked up how fake some/most of the shows actually were. With how much people try to show their "real lives" on TV nowadays, and how many people actually watch those shows, it wouldn't surprise me if someone tried to create a "Truman Show" some time in the future. The cost of it would be in the billions, but if you had advertisements daily... almost every minute it seems, then yeah, it could probably turn that bad.

It is always a treat to see a reaction to this gem of a movie (which did not make too much sense when it came out), but Jen's reaction it the best one by far Also nice to see my beloved Natascha McElhone (she has blue eyes - but I love her anyways )

“Voice of God?” “Screw you, man!” This may have been the best reaction video I’ve ever seen. Most people don’t get how incredibly dark this movie is. You SHOULD have goosebumps all the way through. It is kind of “90’s Oscar-bait” in a lot of ways, and was Jim Carrey’s first dramatic role, so I understand why so many people misinterpret the tone, but I love how you got it right from the start. This doesn’t help with your channel, but if you’re interested in some more of this kind of “oh my god this is incredibly terrifying because this could totally happen” science fiction, I’d recommend the short stories of J.G. Ballard. A couple of his novels have been adapted to film. “Empire of the Sun” was a semi-autobiographical account of his childhood, and was adapted by Steven Spielberg, and was also Christian Bale’s breakout role. David Cronenberg also adapted Ballard’s novel “Crash”, which…probably isn’t something that’s going to get you a lot of views - or be great for YT ToS. It’s a weird one. Post-modern transhumanism, with the axis point being the intersectionality sex and car crashes. Cronenberg was going hard in the twilight of his body horror era, and “Crash” was pretty avant garde even for someone like him. I may have subconsciously written all of that just to ask you to watch Naked Lunch. I don’t think that’s what happened, but to be honest, how do we ever really know? Naked Lunch is Cronenberg’s adaptation of William Burrough’s Novel of the same name, and is probably the best example of someone turning a novel into a film in spite of everyone saying that it’s unfilmable (which goes back to Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”). To put it in broad strokes, picture the guy who played RoboCop as a Beat poet in the 50’s, except he’s actually an exterminator who becomes addicted to the flesh of the giant aquatic Brazilian centipede and moves to Morocco, where his typewriter turns out to be a giant cockroach who convinces him he’s on a covert mission and helps him come to terms with his homosexuality - all to a soundtrack of Ornette Coleman and Howard Shore. That’s a terrible description of the movie, because it’s just something you need to watch to understand. Also, if you’re interested in viewing more of Peter Weir’s work (the director of “The Truman Show”), his breakout film, “Picnic at Hanging Rock” is widely considered to be one of the best Australian films ever made, right up there with “Young Einstein”. (That’s a joke. The latter is a comedy from the 80’s that was amazing when I was growing up, but isn’t held in quite that high regard. The guy who made it is literally named Yahoo Serious, so…come on. You HAVE to put that on your watch list. It’s about Albert Einstein’s rise from a simple apple grower in Tasmania to the man we know today as the one who invented surfing, rock and roll, and created the atomic bomb in an effort to put bubbles into beer.) Peter Weir also directed a film that nobody talks about anymore from 1986 called “The Mosquito Coast”, which I find significant if only because, to my knowledge, it’s the only time Harrison Ford played a “bad guy” character. I consider it a real hidden gem. There was this weird trend in the mid to late 90’s where two different studios would put out a big movie with the same theme at the same time. The Truman Show and EDtv (which literally nobody remembers, for good reason). Volcano and Dante’s Peak. Armageddon and Deep Impact. And then Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. That last one is kind of an anomaly, as those were two of the biggest directors just coincidently making WW2 films the same year. Terrence Mallick hadn’t directed anything in 20 years, and there’s no way he intentionally put out that film the same year as Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. Malick is probably the greatest living American film director, by the way. Most people aren’t familiar with him, but Spielberg was probably sh***ng in his pants when he found out Terrence Malick came out of hiatus to make a WW2 film at the same time as him. Just look at the cast of “The Thin Red Line” to get an idea of how respected he was even among Hollywood A-list actors. It’s mind-blowing how many big-name stars signed on to play a minor role just to be in a Malick film. When it comes to Malick films, I would actually suggest either of his first two films from the 70’s, “Badlands” and “Days of Heaven”. I know “old” movies are a hard sell, but these are timeless, like Hitchcock or Kubrick.

Good/unique movie. It's a fascinating but disturbing concept. Jen love your reaction/analysis. You have a good heart. It's truly disturbing that even the people closest to Truman have been lying to him his whole life. They don't appear to actually care about him. Especially his wife Meryl. She hates him. Yet was planning to have his kid for the show. That's sick. I feel so frustrated and angry every time Marlon shows up with beer to lie to Truman again. Clearly just pretending to care. I wouldn't be suprised if Meryl and Marlon were having an affair. So happy Truman got out, but did hope to see his reunion with Lauren in the real world. Jen I really think you'd enjoy Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's amazing

Conan the Barbarian was a nicely shot movie with a beautiful score, and also has plenty of iconic moments and memorable dialogue. Conan the Destroyer is mediocre at best, poorly written and gimmicky; but okay fantasy fun if you're in the right mood, I suppose. But it was disappointing after the great original.

Something I just realised, when Connor in the church says "Ramirez's blade did not cut deep enough" there's no way he could've known it wasn Ramirez who cut him as Ramirez died before he could tell Connor, so it was just a guess. I guess when he found Juan's katana it had blood on it but that could come from any cut to the body, considering Juan impaled Kurgan at one point.

We may have already averted this disaster by banning whaling, almost every country agreed to stop it in 1986. Japan, I believe has recently resumed whaling, Norway and Iceland are also hunting whales for meat and blubber. It might be tricky to take Spock out for a meal as I believe Vulcans have vegan diets. Vegetarian options are common, but vegan ones less common, even less common in the 1980s. You can't establish a stable breeding population with only two of any mammal the gene pool is far too limited, you need many more, so although they have averted the immediate crisis, I don't know how they are going to move forward. IMHO Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is the weakest of the six movies.
