I am 36 yo just like you and since I was a kid most people often associate Asians with Chinese (therefore the many Nihaos you heard) and since Chinese phonetically has many phonemes that sound like that infamous expression you've been hearing so often, it became an automatic association. Most of the time it is not mean or racist but unfortunately sometimes it sadly is. You've also witnessed the humongous amount of people that are interested in your culture and country, I hope you keep and treasure those memories from your encounters and spread the love about Tunisia and Tunisian people.
