****Here is the translation*** Note: Yu Jae-Seok is Korea's most famous comedian and emcee. He is the yellow-suit guy dancing in the Gangnam Style music video. Jo Sae-ho Jo is also a famous comedian. Yu: You are finally here, You Quiz on the Block. How did you decide on your first variety show appearance? Cho: Because I'm far from being funny and I feared becoming a nuisance, I have been withdrawn from appearing here. But, I was told I didn't need to be funny. Also my mother loves this show. She is a fan of dear Mr. Jo here. Yu: Oh, no need for homage. He goes by Se-ho, LOL. Cho: [toward Jo] You look cool in person. [Laughs in disagreement] Jo: If I may ask, where did your last name Cho originate from in the family tree? Cho: Cho from Hanyang. [Staff in the back laughs because they know where Jo is going with this question. Although Cho and Jo's last names appear different in English, they both have the same last name in Korean] Jo: Mine from Changnyeong. Dang it! I was trying to make a connection between us. Yu: That's a shame that it didn't work out, LOL. Jo: Have you seen our program, Mr. Cho? Cho: I watched the episode where my name popped up during the quiz scene. Yu & Joe: That's right. That's right. 1:00 The camera moves to a street where Yu and Jo sit down with a random lady and asks what was the name of the pianist, who became the first Korean to win the Chopin Competition in 2015, and she named Seong-Jon Cho. [She must have gotten a prize for getting the correct answer).Jo: Have you seen our program, Mr. Cho? Cho: I watched the episode where my name popped up during the quiz scene. Yu & Joe: That's right. That's right. 1:00 The camera moves to a street where Yu and Jo sit down with a random lady. He asks what the name of the pianist was who became the first Korean to win the Chopin Competition in 2015- she named Seong-Jin Cho. [She must have gotten a prize for getting the correct answer). 1:13 Then the camera moves to a stage where Seong-Jin Cho is testing the piano. The piano technician Jong Yeol Lee watches him from the audience seats. Yu: When Master piano technician Jong-yeol Lee came on our show, he said you praised him and that his tuning made the piano's sound "shine". Cho: I watched that episode where Mr. Jong Yeol Lee appeared. Yu: Oh, did you see it when I mistakenly referred waltz to valse? Cho: Yes I did. That was so original. [Hahaha] [music] 12 times last month, 8 times this month, you travel through lots of different cities. I heard that is the life of a performer. [music] Yu: How is the life of a performer? Cho: It differs from one performer to another, and I perform about 100 times a year. Some do less, like 40-50 times. I want to build on my experience and perform many while still young and physically fit. Because I hold 100 concerts a year, I spend more time in airports and hotels, more than anywhere else. Yu: How about when you come to Korea? Do you have some other plans? Cho: I bring my notepad with a list of what I want to eat written on it. Food is my only hobby. [Cho said in another video clip of this episode that he ended up taking on food as a hobby due to his busy schedule] Yu: I don't see you being a big eater. Are you? Cho: Yes, I am. Yu: What do you like? Cho names some Korean food he likes and says: That is the price you pay for constantly being abroad. Jo: Perhaps a drink too? Cho [chuckles]: Yes, I sometimes drink beer after an exhausting performance. Yu: There's nothing like having a cold beer after a performance. Cho: I love your reactions. Haha. Yu: That's it. I get it now. Mr. Cho doesn't have people like us around him. Jo [with his high pitched voice]: The pitch of our voice is like at Sol or La on the keyboard? La, Ti, La, Ti. [Laughs] Jo: You have big hands. Speaking of pianists . . . Yu: You seem to have long fingers. [Cho and Jo put their palms against each other] Yu: Long fingers. [Now Cho and Yu put their palms against each other] My palm is a bit bigger, but your fingers are much longer. Jo: How many keys can you stretch your fingers across? Cho: I can reach an 11th note and manage a 12th. Yu: You really do have long fingers. Jo: Wow. . . Longer fingers may be an advantage in playing the piano, correct? Cho: I don't know because I've never had them short. [Laughs] Yu: Hahaha. Honestly, as it is, your fingers are very long, your joints. Just by looking at you, you are no different from other young people of your age, but you are called "Cho-pin". You are literally an unparalleled pianist, Seong-Jin Cho. What an extraordinary person you are. I'm curious about your first encounter with the instrument. When did you start playing the piano? Cho: I started playing when I was 6 years old. My mother took up playing the piano as a hobby, and we had an upright piano at home. So naturally, I would play around with the piano and sing a song while playing it. Yu: Do you have a musician in your family or in the music industry? Cho: I am the first musician. Yu: Then, neither of your parents were musicians? Cho: My parents like classical music but do not know much about it. Jo: Still, when you first sit on the piano, you know there is this harmony between you and the outside world, did you feel that you and the piano become one? Have you ever had that feeling? Cho: When I was young, I tried various things. I tried swimming and learned Taekwondo. I convinced my parents to take me to violin lessons. I think I only had fun with the piano. I felt I was better at the piano. Yu: So you felt the piano suited you for some reason. Jo: [Cho's parents took 6 year old Cho to a group piano lesson at a music academy for several months]. It's just that when we were little, we had this 'grapes' chart to fill the colors in (to mark your attendance at school). Did you get some days off from the academy? You know, you skip classes sometimes. Have you ever ditched classes from the academy? Cho: I was 6 years old when I went to the academy. It's hard to skip school when you're 6 years old. [Laughs] Yu: Actually, this has gone beyond recovery. I apologize on behalf of Jo, LOL. Cho: [in disappointed tone] You know my mother liked you. [Laughs] Yu: Generally, Bayer is picked for beginners when learning the piano. Bayer for Children Book I and II, and if you've made your way up to Czerny 100, you are there. Jo: Czerny 30, 40, 50 . . . Yu: Then Cherny 100. Cho: I think I did up to Cherny 30. Yu: Up to Czerny 30 . . . Good information for those interested in piano and want to learn it. Mr. Seong-Jin Cho just said he only went up to Cherny 30. [Laughs] I guess you obviously couldn't hide your talent. You were accepted to Seoul Arts Center for the Gifted and the Talented in third grade. You deepened your understanding of the piano while studying under Professor Park Sook-ryeon and Professor Soo-Jung Shin. 7:00 Professor Park Sook-ryeon: Seong-Jin grew up as if something exploded and broke out of the shell. Soo-Jung Shin, former dean of Seoul National University's College of Music: "Seong-Jin was naturally born with determination and tenacity." You also did well academically. Cho: Doesn’t everyone get good grades in elementary school?! Yu: That's not true at all. What are you talking about? [chuckles and asks] Why are you looking at him (Jo) by the way? 3:49 [as Cho turns to look at Jo for approval. The pretense here is if Jo was good in school, then everyone was]. [Laughs] Cho: [smiles] I apologize. Jo: You do have your own unique sense of humor. Yu: In your performance video, there is this comment where the person says he was a very close friend to you. He said you did so well almost every time you took a big exam, you would get 100, 100, 100, 95 in Korean language, English, Mathematics, Science, etc. You were really into the game MapleStory. Did you like MapleStory? Cho: I liked MapleStory. [I read somewhere that little Cho created MapleStory characters and sold them] Yu: Your friend said, "Thanks to Volume 1 of The Theory of Exorcism in the End Times that you bought me. I ended up buying the entire volume. It's great to see you succeed. Thanks for playing such beautiful music for me. [I think I saw this comment where Cho's friend said Cho bought him a book as a birthday gift and played the piano for him that day] Coming your way, I hope your days are full of good things. Stay healthy." Your friend seems cool, too. Cho: Hyung-sup? Yu: You seem to remember. Cho: Yes. The Theory of Exorcism, I was reading that book a lot back then. I think it's Hyung-sup. [Theory of Exorcism in elementary school, LOL]
