Similarly, the road itself needs to be a control-system 'actor' with some motor/sensory caps for a more easily achievable robust self-driving... network. Once on an interstate, vehicles would be maintained in separation, through merges, exits and minor accidents, vastly lowering the potential for collisions, thus self-driving development glitches are less risky. Less lawsuits. The tech in the vehicles would not need to be so advanced and expensive, either. As it is, the tech in the car must be so advanced because it is compensating for a difficult open-loop in the control system - a lazy partner.
