Fantastic and valid point about the age of the roof prior to installing. These things can create nightmares when they leak. I see it happen all the time as an adjuster. You are at the mercy of workmanship and underlayment quality, not to mention the 5% degradation per year in generating capacity. I would never buy a home with solar panels.

Instead of dropping someone, why not just let them know you don't cover solar panels? Then the customer can decide if they want to find someone else who does, or get them separately insured, or take them down. To just drop them is weird, and just goes to show how disreputable insurance companies are.

Sure, solar panels to save the roof during a hurricane. They will act like a sail and increase the chance of your roof getting torn off more easily. Plus, if a bad hail storm comes, those panels will likely get smashed like a car window rendering them useless.

How do Solar Panels hold up when damaged by hail? How about gale force winds? I’m all for them but some insurance company’s spread the love around when there are serious damages say from Hurricanes.... Then we ALL pay for New Solar Panels!!!

Poorly-installed solar panels or badly-maintained also pose risks from electrical fires. Adding solar panels is a capital improvement. Solar panels are on the house, so they are a bigger loss in the event that someone drops a smoldering cigarette into a couch. If the house goes, then so do the solar panels. So -- raise the insurance premium to recognize the added risk.

As a General Contractor I do not recommend putting solar panels on rooftops due to potential structure and roof damage!

If the solar panels costs $50K+, then the home owne just added $50K of replacement cost liability to the insurance company.
