What Actually Happened To Teak Sailboat Interiors - Ep 274 - Lady K Sailing
This week we take a look at teak sailboat interiors and what actually happened to cause Beneteau, Jeanneau, Hunter, Hanse, and other major manufacturers to start the IKEA craze of veneer woods for sailboat cabins. We talk about teak production in Myanmar (formerly Burma) as well as Thailand, India, and Laos. We talk about sustainable woods and wood manufacturing.

I have a fiberglass boat with a koto and teak interior... Great stuff... The boat had teak decks over a fiberglass structural deck ... 20 years ago I removed the worn out teak decks and went to nonskid... No regrets. Teak should be kept below decks.

Why no mention of catamarans? A 30ft cat ( like mine!) has loads of space compared with a monohull and you can see all around from the saloon. Very light inside, two bedrooms, dedicared galley, separate toilet/washroomand TWO engines!

I really don't understand this idea that race boats aren't better in rough seas? Don't race boats usually sail the southern ocean? I know any video of a sailboat in rough water is always a race boat... Race boats are also usually more strongly built with high tech materials... What gives??

Nice tribute. My first boat was a Douglas 31 . I purchased the prints from Ted and received endless advice oh how to tune it. My second boat is an Aloha 8.5 at the time I purchased her I learned of his passing and sad that I can’t purchase the drawings any longer. Something about many of his designs just echos tradition, practical and class.

A view from the UK. Are you serious my sailing friend that seems to sail from an office. I can only conclude from your video that you think all wood interiors are good, all modern interiors are bad. You cannot be more further from the truth. Just because YOU think this way, does not make it true. You are a dinosaur my friend. Living and sailing in your grandma's wardrobe maybe right for some but for the 21st century some see this as history. Teak - or wood interiors are an anachronism, sorry but my advice is to get into the real world.

It’s really just a matter of taste. You either like rich dark interior wood, or you prefer light airy interior wood. I really don’t understand why we get worked up and divided over silly stuff like this.

Everything made nowadays unless it's custom built is made to be thrown away rather than rebuilt and continued use for decades.. the older Dufour sailboats are amazing boats. They're one of the manufacturers that made it through the 79 fastnet race perfectly fine and they have that wonderful use of space that European designs are known for.. I believe Dufour was bought out in the not to distant past and so I'm sure that their quality has gone along with all the other modern manufacturers

Another great video, happy to see you branching out with CharlietheTruck. You make really helpful videos, and I'm really looking forward to seeing that applied to the box truck build. I got into the idea of tiny homes, and van/RV life, but the cost of both have gone up so much since they got popular on KRplus. If you're trying to build new, you're looking at $60-80k+ for a van, probably close to $100k for a tiny house. When I realized that I got really into the thought of owning a liveaboard, I'm pretty sure it's the best bang for your buck in any budget range.

Lived aboard 10 years , Pearson 42 factory new in ‘82 ,I did teak work for a living , still own some raw teak… in todays world it is silly .. hard to maintain, super expensive and no one even knows what it is compared to the past..let it go.. it’s like living in a coffin with all teak and mahogany… some traditions are best left in the past.. 99% of people who sail today are not worth killing a fine old teak tree over.. let it live …

I used to have an Irwin 32 .5 ft center cockpit . It had an izzu diesel engine. It has a full keel . This made is perfect for a live a board for the Bahamas . My children and I lived on it for 2 years .We had lots of great adventures . The people of the Bahamas are so nice. My children were 11 daughter and son 17 at the time . We met people from all over the world couples and families . But I did but meet any other single moms with children .

  • @jamesbaldwin7676

As a professional wood worker, I have to say, there simply is no substitute for teak. As a boat owner, I have to say that its use on the outside of boats should be strictly limited (Unless you like spending all your sail time varnishing.) And teak over fiberglass decks is a real deal breaker for me because of the hundreds of screw holes holding the stuff down. (One leak and you're screwed.) Almost all old decks of the past need replacement because the planks were so thin to begin with. You can't really sand them thinner since many bungs have been sanded through.

  • @johnjennings9043

I have some teak built into my 1980's Golden Hind. Cannot get new replacements (at almost any price) here in Europe. Internal joinery is Sepele. I have had some success getting replacement with old external doors (if you are very, very careful). The second option is Iroko. Its a pig to work, and does not weather the same - but - it can look good if finished. Old Iroko is common enough in old (garden) decking or doors.

Lamenting the cost and unavailability of teak is like lamenting the end of carbureted ICE engines, or lead in paint, or spending an entire day driving all over town to buy the things we wanted. We need to look forward and make decisions that factor what is best for future generations. Cheers!

Hi Tim! After owning a small sailing dinghy in my teens, I have just now purchased my first "real" boat. I've been binging your channel and taking sailing classes over the past year. I've bought a Catalina 22 to sail the inland waters of the Netherlands for the next few years, after which I might upgrade to bigger waters and a bigger boat. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us.

A cruising friend sent me a link to this video. I would not have clicked on it otherwise. 25 years on a sailboat. I cannot recommend enough NOT to get excited about the idea. There are lots derelicts boats and derelict people on boats that are a serious problem. So many things not covered in this video. You might find this video entertaining. But I have no problem telling you, don’t do it. There is ALWAYS something to bust your budget. You can even find FREE boats. WARNING. THEY ARE SOMEONE ELSES LIABILITY. We looked at a bigger boat that was heartbreaking. If the owner had offered me that boat plus $30,000, I would have declined. There are boats going to the crusher that were once someone’s dream. We have lived in California, Mexico, Hawaii and now Fiji. I always hated hearing the line about the boat owners 2 best days. The day he buys and the day he sells. It was only a matter of time before I quit lying to myself about the 2nd best day. The friend (in NZ)who sent me the link said this when I mentioned the live aboard problems. Copy paste “We have the same here. People living on boats who should not. It sinks, floats away or burns down. They go get another one.”

Wood doesn't belong on a salt water boat. It is the worst material to have on a boat. 90% of the repairs and failures that I've had to fix on people's boats, is from the wood failing. Interior wood is one of the worst. The mold, the mildew build up, the rot. No one and I mean NO ONE actually fallows through with the level of maintenance, throughout the boats life, that is required to keep the wood from becoming such a massive issue, that the only solution is to hire someone to come in, rip it all apart and replace all the rot.

  • @yepiratesworkshop7997

Man, what a great channel!!! I'm so glad I stumbled onto one of your earlier videos and SUBSCRIBED. If you were at the Annapolis boat show, you weren't too far from my pirate ship at Fell's Point (Baltimore Harbor). If we happen to find ourselves in the same area at the same time, you'll have to come aboard for a visit (and a rum!) Arrr!!! Right now, my schooner (and probably more than a thousand other pleasure boats) are trapped up above the Francis Scott Key Bridge due to it getting "totaled" by a cargo container ship a couple of weeks ago. What I really like about this video was that you're opening up a new world to the "tiny house" crowd. If someone's gonna' like a tiny house -- they'll LOVE living on a boat and, in some respects, they'll find they have more room on a boat! Well, more functional room, anyway. You sure picked a couple of great boats to showcase in your video. That 2002 Catalina 31 is a nice looking boat, but at $54k I think it's a bit on the expensive side. In fact, when I put my steel Colvin Gazelle (50-foot) up for sale later this year, it will probably be priced quite a bit lower. (Anybody interested?) I'm really "itching" to get my 50-year old Westerly Centaur (25-foot) "Opus Magnum-ed out" just the way I want it and get her gunkholing the Chesapeake Bay 'til the end of my days. Anyway, I'm gonna' head off to "Charlie the Truck" and get subscribed there, too. Wishin' ye smooth sailin' as onward ye float, an' good winds an' smooth seas an' friends in yer boat!

  • @JourneyofSyrinx-pg5jz

The 1936 Berthon Gauntlet we’ve just started restoring on our KRplus channel “Journey of Sailing Yacht Syrinx” has a backbone, frames, planks, deck, and houses entirely of solid teak. Interestingly, her interior is mainly from lovely quarter-sawn English oak with just a bit of teak. She’s one of only two Gauntlet’s out of 38 built this way. I can’t imagine what she would cost to build today even if the wood could be sourced. We’re rescuing her following several decades of neglect and her teak construction is the only reason Syrinx is still with us today.

What is the fascination with wood on a boat? Neither look nice and are silly choices for interiors on a boat since boats are in high moisture enviroments their whole life. Wood and water dont mix people! Someone in the home building/sales industry needs to show these boat dudes how to design an interior that is atractive and NO maintenance.

Largely, I think this comes down to personal taste. While I generally like interiors (house, boat, whatever) done in fine wood and great craftsmanship, I must confess that it can be overdone and some of the older traditional boats do come off as a bit gloomy. I also find that Ikea look very unappealing. So I guess I fall somewhere in the middle in terms of preference. I don't like to see wood around areas with high water access such as near the sink, or stairs to the cockpit. That just screams maintenance to me and maintenance is not a labor of love, but rather of necessity, so less is more. Off topic question. Whenever sites listing sailboats for sale is brought up on KRplus, it seems to be almost always Yachtworld. What do people think of sailboatlistings and/or other sites? It doesn't seem like yachtworld has as many listings, but perhaps just my experience.
