What separated TDVDS from the majority of other sitcoms of that era is that it kept itself grounded in the real world. The stories, the humor and the characters in the show were very human and relatable. Many other comedies shows of the same time period had way out premises with an emphasis on slapstick shenanigans, wacky situations and over the top characters ("The Beverly Hillbillies", "Bewitched", "Gilligan's Island", "The Munsters") etc. The humor on TDVDS was smart and funny and not so gimmicky which is how the majority of other sitcoms from this era come off as being. Don't get me wrong, these other shows are still charming and funny in their own way but live primarily in a fantasy bubble that's detached from reality.
