Only a minute in to your video & really enjoyed your Alien analysis but have to give my take on the female thing as I think 2049 is the greatest film ever made. I find the feminist critique angle on this film laughable. It's as if they weren't paying attention to anything that actually happened. The character who receives by far and away the worst treatment in the film is K. He is treated like absolute dirt by society. The world they live in is dark and tough on everyone. Portraying this in a film is not by default an approval of it.

I can not thank you enough for making this. This was expertly made and executed and I finally feel like I understand the movie in its entirety

Something you missed that's not necessarily an easter egg however, when Annie is freaking out piecing it all together and going through the photo album, there is a shot that for just a split second shows the inside of her left wrist whish can be seen to display some scars in the form of Japanese katakana characters that spell out the word "free". This wasn't done intentionally for the film, but actually is on the wrist of Toni in real life. It couldn't be more fitting for the film though! Also, when Peter is being chased by Paimon/Annie, the stairs to the attic are down, but they weren't down when he woke up and was walking down the hall in the previous shots. This is not an editing mistake, but the cult lowering the stairs after Peter went down into the living room, knowing that he would run up the stairs to the second floor to try and escape her. They were guiding him up there to show him the body of his grandmother to break him down even more, so he would be weak enough that Paimon could take him over. And you've already said this but I have NO IDEA how she wasn't at least nominated for an Oscar. I think it's in the top 3 best performances I've ever seen.

I don't get it and I doubt that any ammount of overinterpretation can improve a movie. The acting isn't "great", it's intense and over the top at times but that's it. The characters are completely stripped of personnality and walled into their stereotypes both because of the acting and writing, constantly switching from two states, "doormat" and "completely hysterical". The plot and symbolism are nothing to write home about, you could grab any campy horror movie and get lost while researching spiritualism, but that just means that spiritualism and mythology are full of meaning and mysteries, right? what does that have to do with a movie that briefly borrows from it? The music and bleak tone are greatly executed but at the service of a contrived, predictable chain of events. Family's haunted by entity, they have family issues, paranormal activity ramps up steadily throughout the movie, protagonist finds out about the entity through some kind of grimoire, yada yada. And what's with the recurrence of in-your-face setups? Like the sceance leaflet, the epi pen comment, etc. There's no unpredictability, every scene has its strict purpose with very little room for contemplation and it makes it all feel like the context is very limited, as in the whole world revolves about the MC's family and the main cast's lives all revolve exclusively arround the cult and traume related to it. The ambiance and tone make it seam more solemn and meaningful than it really is. At the end of the day the whole ordeal is just too ambitious for its own good, the end product feels undecided on its themes, the cinematography is on the weaker side for the most part. Overall it comes off as unrealized potential, on the higher side of average at best. Midsommar is leagues better in almost every way imo.

Amazing video, exactly what I was looking for. It doesn't detract from the point you make at 3:32:50, but when Annie says she's seen apparitions she's referring to her mother (from the beginning of the movie) and Charlie. I don't believe she's saying the seance in the house has yielded multiple spirits.

I just now noticed after all of these years that the Paimon sigil in the movie is not actually the true Paimon sigil from the real, historic book, the Ars Goetia. I wonder if they had to change fit a little due to copyright. Looked it up and some sources say it's in the public domain, so anyone can use it without having to pay anyone else, and other sources say that it is actually copyrighted. Guess they wanted to avoid a potential legal battle?

You missed a potential conne tion with the whipporwill. You mentioned the oiling of the lips to help let the soul slip out easier adter death. You also mention the whippirwill at the funeral and then in a cage by the end. You hypothesize that Charlie/Paimon was potentially trying to resurect the soul of Ellen and how distraught he was at her death despite being a demon who should know better about his own deal. Well here is the thing. In Lovecraft's Dunwhich horror, it is revealed that there is a superstition that whipporwill specifically are drawn to a dying person. They are used as a means to know if a person is dying of natural causes as they will start to gather aorund them in numbers. When the person dies, they take immediatly flight. This is due to them chasing after the soul if the person in an attempt to devour it before it makes it free to the afterlife. If a whipperwill catches the soul, that person is effectively destroyed from existance. Their soul is devoured and thus no longer exists as such. This is taken as urban legend by the crazy yokel people in rural massachusettes where the story is set but the guy who so addimemtlt pushes ot as truth is revealed to be a gebuine occultist who successfully summoned an elder god to impregnate his daughter and give birth to two half human/half vosmic horror meant to destroy the world; plus there is also evidence given that he was correct about the birds. Now i am not saying that Hereditary is directly claiming a whipperwill ate the soul of Ellen but perhaps it is providing symbolism through recogbition of its lovecraft role. The fact it is at her fuberal and they oil her lips but then it seems Paimon is confused/upset and trying to summon her spirit may indicate something expected in the deal after her death went wrong. Her soul perhaps did not go to hell to be his queen as promised or something else that put the ritual at risk of failing. It is a deal in the family that she would go there and become his queen in exchange for the vessel usage so it would be upseting to him if she perhaps went to heaven or something else. If she was stuck earthbound or in purgetory even, his end of the bargain was not upheld and thus the ritual may fail. The whipperwill being caged at the end would then symbolize whatever went wrong was corrected. I think the evidence that Ellen did love her daughter and felt regret in their relationship being left strained with Annie out of the loop on the family history and Ellen feeling she may not agree if she did know, could be the factor. If Ellen's spirit was left Earthbound by this regret and uncut emotional attachment to her daughter, she may not have properly passed on yet and thrown an unintentional wrench into her own plans. With the truth revelaed and things set into motion, perhaps Ellen finally moved on to Hell. This also could further explain the confusion of Paimon. He IS Paimon in Charlie's body but with the deal suddenly on the bronk of being broken, perhpas skme level if his power and control are being removed even more from him in the mortal form. Think of it like the contract isnt TECHNICALLY broken but the payment has been delayed so the longer that occurs the less entitled he is legally to the exchange with threat of losing it permanently. With the whipperwill caged we have confirmation that debt is settled.

39:33 -Yeah but it still is hammering in the wrongful steritype of people with deformities or disabilties being dangerous or bad. Just because this particular actress felt ok with the personal reprocussions does not mean she should represent a entire community of pepple facing their own consequences as a result. The prexisting bias and its effects that haunt us not only who have visably notacible differences but behaviorsal quirks/differences has been a serious socital problem for so many generations and this kibd of reinforcment doesn't help. You can say people are smart enough to know better but I willl direct you to look historically at the evidence. It really sucks when you are not treated equally or fiarly in general life because people have it pounded into their subconsious to just avoid the "undesirables." Perhaps its easier for a sheltered actress with money to throw around..maybe not. Either way, no person is an island and irs ALWAYS better to error on the side that doesn't further victimize a minority group thats paid thw cost of predjudice for hundreds of years, plus. Especially for just the sake of gratuitous entertainment. It comes off completely callous and detached from basic human emotional underatanding. The movie can still be made and just as sucessful but choosing thsi is a lazy way to ensure gain at the expense of others without putting the effort in to earn it. I dont feel someone like you should be alllowed to have a say even if you can have an opionion. You are welcome to gave it but also be held avcountable for the sociopathic inclunations it expresses about you in our society which you do not need to be allowed to successfully live in. If you want to continue making a living and being wlecomes in your community, I suggest keeping opinions like this revolving around communitees yoy do not belong in or know the plight of to yourself. I dont know what it is to be a piece of eurotrash so i wont make assumptions about your parents treatment of you or how you should be represented publically reguarding that so I will ask you foxus on that and leave topics like this you have no understanding of alone. Bigotry tends to end poorly in life for people like you who cant make a living outside of this kind of charity.

1:58:35 Strictly speaking he is not qualified to listen to her. Due to their personal connection, he cannot professionally diagnose and treat her, because he would be less objective than a psychiatrist/psychologist without such personal involvement. He can refer her to a colleague of his, but that's as good as he can do. Just imagine trying to accurately diagnose whether your wife suffers from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. What would that mean to you? How would you deal with it? Maybe your diagnosis was wrong and the symptoms shown are exaggerated. It's temporary due to this and that event in her life. My point is that diagnosing a patient unrelated to you objectively is already hard enough. Doing the same for a relative/close one is near impossible. Given the context, he was the best that she could do, but that's still a compromise with a capital C.

Holy moly, it's the voice of John Nyquist. Loving the book. Update: Oh man, I have a lot of big thoughts about this book. Both positive and critical. Overall, I really liked the book. I love sci-fi and this hits all the important notes of executing an idea well and exploring the human condition of it. Hitchhiker's Guide meets 1984's nihilism. A lot of the writing line by line feels very mature, even though some passages suffer from redundancy the book itself is written in an engaging way and has a lot of great flair that makes the reading enjoyable and engaging. I feel like the book has some structural issues, everything in the book is pointing to the conclusion, it's so pointed that the conclusion can be guessed at early on and it makes some of the present goings on in the book seems to overstay their welcome. There were some twists throughout the book, but the resolution felt a bit on the nose. I think the book would have benefited from some more "show, don't tell". eg. The device refused my pull and I found myself hitting it recklessly striking it. I careened to the side from my effort and used the new position my leg was in to violently kick the thing, I heard a snap as I fell to the ground. I couldn't tell if it was my foot, the device or something else. I rose with ragged breaths... The pacing feels solid. The introduction and climax feel tightest. The section building up to the climax could probably have done with more editing. With a couple sections that seem to over-explain concepts that the reader is probably comfortable with. I think it's fine to summarize the narrators lack of knowledge. Anytime we have to step through a narrator's failed attempts at manipulating something the book comes to a crawl. The repetition at the end is pretty intense. I feel like bullet pointing some of the concepts you wanted to go over. Alternatively, creating a list of points you wanted to go over after a rough draft and focus the writing more, could have helped make the writing more focused and punchier. There's a lot of great material that you are going over in the section that I really love. It feels like its undercut by a lot of the material being rehashed, reworded. But I think the main culprit are statements that distinguish without a difference. I don't want to get into spoiler territory. But a single statement that makes its point with punch hits heavier than having 3-4 sentences say approximately the same idea, sentiment. The book's title is too on the nose. It's probably the main actor in pointing to the conclusion. From the title I could have guessed much about the book. A summarizing title is good for an email or a thesis, but for a book a title should first make the reader want to find out more and, second enhance the reading experience. So, you get more points for being evocative here. Other titles that I think would have served better: Furion's Eye, Idle Wrath of a Dead God, Calamity's Metronome. I want to repeat, I love the book. I love the concept and execution. I don't need to explain that part because the book does that. Bravo on making a thing and putting it out into the world. I'm one book away from being an avid fan of your writing as well as video essays. So, take all the critical bits above with love, because I think foundationally you have the makings of a great writer. 😙

This is a really interesting video to listen to because my interpretation of the film is completely different, by just taking more scenes at their face value and embracing the idea of there being some sort of lovecraftian entity residing in the island that has a hold of Wake. Even the scenes that are clearly in Howard's head can be seen as this entity probing him in some way, or as his increased mental decline due to its influence. In this interpretation Howard is the victim and not Wake.
