My back hurts just from watching that. Poor folks sitting at the tail. But! We all make mistakes. And this is just fun banter.

I’m not an expert in landing a Boeing 747, but I can tell he didn’t idle the throttles on short final

What’s with the push on the yoke nowadays with pilots. Hard landings happen, but that elevator went very “down” in over correcting and down comes the nose. Probably saved by the captain who grabbed it and pushed the power up. Almost another porpoise landing and airplane breakage. Land with your feet, not with your beak. I fear newer pilots no longer have any pitch and power concepts.

Everyone has to learn. He will do better next time! My dad was an air force pilot for 40 years. Training in bombers, 1st flight bombing a ground target in the early 1960s, straight out of the air force academy. He did a nice low approach, pressed the button to drop the bomb... twice. After he pressed it for the 1st time, he was not sure if it worked, he was expection a bigger noise or something. In the split seconds it took to press the button immediatelly for the second time, he scared the life out of the observing officer on the ground. He was then told that they thought he would crash. "Dramatic" training for sure. My admiration to all the pilots out there :)

I was on an Alaska Air flight a couple years ago that hit hard like that. Without the lap belts we would have been tossed out of our seats. Pilot decided to ride it out and keep it on the ground. By the time we were stable enough to brake we were halfway down the runway. Brake application bounced my head off the seat in front of me. It was a wild ride.

That degree of rooky pilot incompetence should never have been permitted on a commercial flight. The noise in the pax cabin would have been horrendous let alone the bone shaking reverberations. Are we now seeing increasing instances of pilot shakedowns on commercials to save on training costs?

I'm a bit surprised they raised the gear. For instance the B-1 was known to experienced some hard landings from time to time due to its required landing technique, but the tech order said to not raise the gear after a hard landing.

I still do not understand why he wanted to land on that short 24R when a much longer runway is available in the south complex, 25L. Short runway = Hot brakes on a 747.....

So someone correct me if my information is incorrect but I was informed that he had just purchased this airplane and was flying it to his home airport. If this information is correct, he maybe should have waited to fly it back during daylight hours for the flight. Also, I’m curious as to why he gave up so much altitude in the beginning when the engine initially began to give him problems. Definitely could have used that 3K feet or more at the end of the flight to try and get to a runway or more lit road. By the way I’m not criticizing anyone, just trying to understand his decision making and hopefully I make good decisions if I’m ever in a similar situation.

Man, that guy must have just earned himself a nickname. I'm thinking 'cowboy' for trying to ride the bucking bull, lol. Just a bit late on flare! I'm sure he'll do great in the future. These sorts of fuck ups are a big blow to the ego now, but on the other hand, you know he'll never let it happen again. Glad everyone seems to have been safe, and the frame made it home!

In the day and age of Foreflight, there is little excuse for needing progressive taxi in the first place. But if you ask for it, you should get it, and this pilot didn’t really get what he was asking for. Lucky no one was hurt or killed.

I'll respect an individual who owns their mistakes. It shows responsibility and accountability which is sadly lacking in so many areas of society these days, you have people that regardless of what you show them in physical evidence, will refuse to own up to their mistakes and instead blame everything else under the Sun rather than admit they made a mistake. Toddler behavior, they might have gotten older but they never matured. Kudos to the Lufthansa pilot who owned this, don't let it stop you. Everyone makes mistakes.

We've all done 'em. Small point, tower controller really shouldn't have asked the reason for the touch and go when the aircraft was on final. Another unwanted distraction at a critical time. Once on the ground and taxying would have been an appropriate moment to ask.

That's the type of pilot you want flying your plane. No excuses, admitted his fault. Will learn from it and make him a better pilot 👏

  • @fastfiddler1625

Well dang it! This happened exactly one hour after I got in. Parked at terminal 1 even. Not that I would have known to look. This is also why I don't like long haul flying. I don't think I could do any better after ten plus hours in the air.
