I just showed my 12 year old daughter Spirited Away for her first time. The first time I saw Spirited Away was shortly after I found out I was going to have my daughter 13 years ago. So it was a really special moment to show it to her. We watched half last night, as soon as she finished her school work today she was asking when can we finish the movie.🥰

The 24 version was novel in that it offers us a practical solution to the problems of shame & cowardice… …a leader does not elope whilst his kingdom burns. Best to foresee the consequences of one’s actions - or maybe even inaction? - and adjust one’s attitudes in the present accordingly via ‘expectation of failure’ - fear comes & goes, that’s fine, personally I wouldn’t ‘drill’ for it’s fuel - really though, ‘it’ is about developing one’s ‘taste’. Maybe even one’s distaste?

This is such a great deep dive for one of my favourite films, which definitely changed me as well! Kudos! The one thing I will add is that the forest spirit's face also resembles quite a lot a baboon. Not sure of their significance in Japan, but see the resemblance to the Macaque monkeys as well...

When this movie came out in 1992 it was my favorite vampire movie, many years ago from that day someone did some homework on it and here it's all laid out. Thanks, man, for this behind the curtain information. God Bless you. I still do watch it from time to time today in 2024 and will continue to do so as long as I'm still here.

Rereading the book this week... I think the 1978 movie did a very good job of condensing the story. I would love to see the Elahrairah (sic) stories onscreen, in 2D

Very happy to see the love for Cartoon Saloon. This video appears to have been made before Wolfwalkers was unleashed upon the world, which explains its omission from the list. But oh, God, do I love that film, and I will never miss the opportunity to sing its praises. Re: Darby O'Gill -- avoid the Disney+ version, as it dubs over the vocals of Albert Sharpe and Jimmy O'Dea, ostensibly to make their dialogue easier to understand (a classic case of not trusting the audience) but gutting two of cinema's most charming performances in the process. This beautiful film deserves better.

Buddh is the planetary name for Mercury, if anyone's confused or wondering. In Hinduism, planets are also seen as dieties. Hence a diety called Buddh.

  • @sumimasen_wtf

Incorrect. Mother Kali is very much the goddess of death & blood (life). Which makes her rule over these two important dominions of human life in Bengali Hinduism. During ancient times, she was worshipped in the region what's known as Bengal today. Her idol was black (hence the name Kali), and blood offerings is mandatory to complete her rituals. Over time, she was adapted into what we know as Hinduism today. Even the the capital city Calcutta's name comes from Kalikatta, which means 'land of Kali'. And that is the reason Bengali culture is a very goddess-centred culture (also known as Shakti culture), unlike rest of the India. The biggest holy-days in Bengal are all about goddesses: Durga, Lokkhi, Saraswati, Monosha, Annapurna, Kali, etc.

Miyazaki is a little sloppy sometimes with pronunciation of foreign words, as we all are. The name "Nausicaä" comes from the daughter of King Alcinous from The Odyssey, and should sound like "Nau-sic-ay-ahh", but in the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind film they just say "Nau-shih-cah". The "ä" demands a long-a sound but they omit it entirely.

Sounds like it came from the word that's pronounced with a "guh", and the Japanese are the ones ORIGINALLY mispronouncing the word, lol. Sounds like the "jih" crowd is using that unintentional mispronunciation as a reason to perpetuate saying it wrong, which is a little silly... The Japanese accent is not the correct way of saying it... And regardless, the snippets of Miyazaki himself saying it also sounded closer to a "guh" to me anyways, though I could subtly hear a "jih" slightly mixed in due to his accent. i.e. the Japanese accent (accent = mispronunciation) is not supporting evidence to do the same. The snippets of "jih" examples sounded to me like people making goofy and awkward attempts at being "respectful" to Japanese accent/unintentional mispronunciation ... And the lemmings follow the other lemmings over the cliff... I doubt the Japanese care at all. Miyazaki would laugh at anyone who cares It's "Guh". Arguing against is childish stubbornness. "Jih-blee" is not an INTENTIONALLY accepted mispronunciation like "sel-ticks" for the Boston Celtics. The Japanese say "jih-buri" because they have a hard time saying the letter "L", and the sound of the word in general apparently, and others should not mistakenly copy that linguistic difficulty phonetically and call it a "pronunciation". It's just wrong. It's definitely "guh"... We don't say "tor-till-ah" chips, we say "tor-tee-ah" chips. E.g. If someone were to intentionally pronounce their company named Tortilla Gorilla as "Tor-till-ah Gor-ill-ah" or "Tor-tee-ah Gor-eeh-ah", just to rhyme and sound funny for marketing purposes, that would be different, but that is definitely not the case here with Ghibli. In short, anyone arguing for the "jih" sound is a silly person making a big deal and wasting time trying to prove they're right, like this video creator (who mispronounced a handful of other words as well with his Canadian accent, and said "aircrafts"... Lol), and like the author of the article that brought me to this video, who tried very hard to tell her relative online (with all the effort of a published article!!! Haha) that she was right in saying "jih-blee", when her relative correctly corrected her in saying "gih-blee"... Sounds like author of that article (and maybe this video creator as well?) had their egos hurt a bit because they've been saying it wrong with a "jih", and they will go to great lengths to attempt to convince others of their thinking instead of humbling themselves and accepting that they are wrong. ...though the history presented in this video was interesting, and I appreciated it from that perspective. It was fun writing this comment, lol. Not worth my time and I really don't care about the pronunciation or that other people care for that matter, but I'm wide awake in the middle of the night, apparently nothing better to do, and I'd rather hit the submit button and not have wasted the minimal effort I put into this comment. People be cray... "el oh el"... I mean "loh-hl".

Another film from 2014 with retro synth aesthetics was Cold in July (2014). I consider that to be a companion piece to The Guest (2014) but with a more wild story. That's one of my fav films of all time.
