Joy Division - 1979 - Unknown Pleasures

- 게시일 2021. 10. 16.
- Unknown Pleasures is the debut studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 15 June 1979 by Factory Records. The album was recorded and mixed over three successive weekends at Stockport's Strawberry Studios in April 1979, and was produced by Martin Hannett, who incorporated a number of unconventional production techniques into the group's sound. The cover artwork was designed by artist Peter Saville, using a data plot of signals from a radio pulsar. It is the only Joy Division album released during lead singer Ian Curtis's lifetime.
Factory Records did not release any singles from Unknown Pleasures, and the album did not chart despite the relative success of the group's non-album debut single "Transmission". It has since received sustained critical acclaim as an influential post-punk album, and has been named as one of the best albums of all time by publications such as NME, AllMusic, Select, Rolling Stone, and Spin.

Yeah i luv that brand bro, i like that Nirvana one too wit that smile face
I’m on my third one. Have the original album too. I loved that era.
I'm a 64-year-old nurse. First heard this album when I was in the army a long, long time ago. In 2022 its truth remains as potent and relevant as it was then. Timeless.
61 yr old former jr. Executive Manager (have the briefcase packed away to prove it, career ended by Ortho surgeon's knife). 61 year old wife. 42 years in healthcare, respiratory therapist, pulmonary functions, and the past 27 yrs, Polysomnography: she watches you sleep (it's more complex). How did we get old? We are the O.G. Punk Rockers from the '70's, God damn it! But, we made it. We didn't OD. We didn't opiate ourselves to death. We worked hard and now we have money. Wait unit age 65 and those 401Ks and Pension become available. We don't have to wait until 67. Seniors that are Joy Division freaks! Not your grandma or grandpa, huh? Let me hit the vape once more & turn off the J.D. CD before I go shopping. I remember when I was young ...
Thanks Cipher. I'm 55 and Joy is incredible. Nice to be reminded I'm older, broken brain always makes me think I'm ..rather younger...embarrassing..but true😎
I'm almost 40 and still feel like I've listened to Joy Division in my childhood, even though I've found them decades later; was more influenced by listening to The Police in the 80s.
What I'm trying to say is, I get that timeless feeling; still listening to them in Spotify.
Respect! And true that.
How did it sound then ?
I truly believe that without this album there are a lot of bands that wouldn't exist.
Yes, most of us have only heard 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. Then you hear this album, and you can see where so many bands got elements of their sound from.
True! They hit something burning .
So many.
I doubt Interpol would exist, at least as we know them, without JD.
There's nothing to believe in, these are facts, music would not be the same without Joy Division
saw them live in 1979 unbelievably the first band I ever saw and I had never heard of them . they changed my life I was 13
envyyyyyyyyy, wasn't even born til 87 lol :(
You're so lucky I only recently discovered them. It's amazing how many great bands don't get any radio play
I was born in 1976 and first heard a song from JD at the age of 9. Instant catch! When I was old enough to buy my 1st tape I found out Ian Curtis had passed... then I followed the rest of the crew in New Order band
I hope Ian Curtis knew he was making truly great music. I wish he heard all the bands he influenced. And I wish he knew we were all listening 40+ years later.
He knows 🙏

As a teenager living far away from Britain, it is fascinating how an album by a British band 43 years ago is still having its influence on us, regardless of time and space. The lyrics and melody is synchronised in this album to give a universal feeling of melancholy and agitation, where we can all empathise on. Rest in Peace Ian Curtis, and I hope you realise in heaven that your music still holds influence to all of us🙏
It was the producer who gave them their sound. Listen to when they were Stiff Little Kittens how they else might have sounded.
LOL . How can Ian realize anything now ??? Hes dead . dummy
@@richardstonk4348 It's a figure of speech, dummy
@@bookofthedamned No, their live sound when playing as JD was as good as anything Hannett produced. Less spaced out and atmospheric but thrilling in its intensity and urgency.
I'm fascinated, that someone is fascinated, at the power and influence of the universal language known as music. The blokes brain will quite literally be on the verge of exploding if he ever comes across a little band known as the Beatles or a quite, non assuming fella, that got around town called David Bowie.
Nobody was depressed enough in the 70’s to appreciate the greatest album that ever was and will be.
Nobody was depressed enough in the 70s??? Dude, you CLEARLY weren't around for the 70s. Depression and cynicism fueled the 70s!
@@derkeheath5172 Not for us it didnt 70s were a blast
@@derkeheath5172 I think the 70s were extreme in all kinds of expressions! So both of u are right.Myself remembers a different kind of world and social live in this time, compared to now, it was heaven .
People coming off 60's drugs probably became depressed I'm sure
1970's Britain was depressing as fuck dude; so many factories and industries were being shut down, there was no jobs, there was a global recession, constant national service strikes, the Three-Day Week, the ongoing Cold War, plus the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Shit was grim as fuck, this kind of music fit the zeitgeist perfectly. Subcultures like skinheads and punks dominated street corners in most towns and cities because the young people felt so disillusioned by society at large.
This album is what perfection looks like for me. A milestone in music history. It's crystal clear for me why there are people out there still listening to this masterpiece after 30 years. They created such a dark unique vibe and where so ahead of their time it blows my mind. Yet I'm still totally mesmerized by their music
I normally don't listen to albums because not all songs are memorable or nice to me, so I just make playlists. This album and Closer are some of the exceptions. Just no song misses. All of them are as potent as absinthe and as memorable as a first kiss. Even the album cover is one of the most iconic ever.

I saw JD at London University on Friday, February 8th, 1980. Killing Joke was the support group. Both acts were fantastic. Ian danced like a demon, and original
KJ bassist Youth wore a beautiful white suit. Four months later, Ian was gone forever. For a short time, JD was the best group on the planet.

@@ianwhitehead691 Ian, it was a fabulous night. Youth played the most pulverizing bass pattern I've experienced, I thought my rib cage was going
to collapse! As for JD, they were in another league. After the concert I said to my friend Ian can't continue to perform like that night after
night, he will have a breakdown. Sadly on May 19th, 1980, Ian clearly reached the point of no return. What a tragedy, he was only 23 years old.
On that freezing long-vanished Friday evening, Ian matched his idol Iggy Pop as the best performer I've ever seen.

Disorder 0:00
I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
Lose sensations, spare the insults, leave them for another day
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
Take the shock away
It's getting faster, moving faster now
It's getting out of hand
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs
It's a no man's land
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing
Getting frequent now
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
Let it out somehow
What means to you, what means to me
And we will meet again
I'm watching you, I'm watching
Oh I'll take no pity from your friends
Who is right? Who can tell?
And who gives a damn right now?
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
I've got the spirit
But lose the feeling
I've got the spirit
But lose the feeling
Feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling
Day of the lords 3:29
This is the room, the start of it all
No portrait so fine, only sheets on the wall
I've seen the nights, filled with bloodsport and pain
And the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
These are your friends from childhood, through youth
Who goaded you on, demanded more proof
Withdrawal pain is hard, it can do you right in
So distorted and thin, distorted and thin
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
This is the car at the edge of the road
There's nothing disturbed, all the windows are closed
I guess you were right when we talked in the heat
There's no room for the weak, no room for the weak
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
This is the room, the start of it all
Through childhood, through youth, I remember it all
Oh, I've seen the nights filled with bloodsport and pain
And the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Candidate 8:16
Forced by the pressure
The territories marked
No longer the pleasure
Oh, I've since lost the heart
Corrupted from memory
No longer the power
It's creeping up slowly
That last fatal hour
I don't know what made me
Or what gave me the right
To mess with your values
And change wrong to right
Please keep your distance
The trail leads to here
There's blood on your fingers
Brought on by fear
I campaigned for nothing
I worked hard for this
I tried to get to you
You treat me like this
It's just second nature
It's what we've been shown
We're living by your rules
That's all that we know
I tried to get to you
I tried to get to you
I tried to get to you
I tried to get to you
Insight 11:33
Guess your dreams always end
They don't rise up, just descend
But I don't care anymore
I've lost the will to want more
I'm not afraid not at all
I watch them all as they fall
But I remember when we were young
Those with habits of waste
Their sense of style and good taste
Of making sure you were right
Hey, don't you know you were right?
I'm not afraid anymore
I keep my eyes on the door
But I remember
Tears of sadness for you
More upheaval for you
Reflects a moment in time
A special moment in time
Yeah, we wasted our time
We didn't really have time
But we remember when we were young
And all God's angels beware
And all you judges beware
Sons of chance, take good care
For all the people not there
I'm not afraid anymore
I'm not afraid anymore
I'm not afraid anymore
Oh, I'm not afraid anymore
New Dawn Fades 15:45
A change of speed, a change of style
A change of scene, with no regrets
A chance to watch, admire the distance
Still occupied, though you forget
Different colors, different shades
Over each mistakes were made
I took the blame
Directionless so plain to see
A loaded gun won't set you free
So you say
We'll share a drink and step outside
An angry voice and one who cried
We'll give you everything and more
The strain's too much, can't take much more
Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire
Can't seem to feel it anymore
It was me, waiting for me
Hoping for something more
Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else
Shes Lost Control 20:33
Confusion in her eyes that says it all
She's lost control
And she's clinging to the nearest passer-by
She's lost control
And she gave away the secrets of her past
And said, "I've lost control again"
And heard a voice that told her when and where to act
She said, "I've lost control again"
And she turned around and took me by the hand
And said, "I've lost control"
How I'll never know just why or understand
She said, "I've lost control"
And she screamed out kicking on her side
And said, "I've lost control again"
And seized up on the floor, I thought she'd died
She said, "I've lost control again"
She's lost control again
She's lost control
She's lost control again
She's lost control
Then I had to phone her friend to state her case
And say, "She's lost control again"
And she showed up all the errors and mistakes
And said, "I've lost control again"
And she expressed herself in many different ways
Until she lost control again
And walked upon the edge of no escape
And laughed, "I've lost control again"
She's lost control again
She's lost control
She's lost control again
She's lost control
Shadowplay 24:30
To the centre of the city where all roads meet
Waiting for you
To the depths of the ocean where all hopes sank
Searching for you
I was moving through the silence without motion
Waiting for you
In a room with no window in the corner
I found truth
In the shadowplay, acting out your own death
Knowing no more
As the assassins all grouped in four lines
Dancing on the floor
And with cold steel, odour on their bodies
Made a move to connect
I could only stare in disbelief
As the crowds all left
I did everything
Everything I wanted to
I let them use you
For their own ends
To the centre of the city in the night
Waiting for you
To the centre of the city in the night
Waiting for you
Wilderness 28:25
travelled far and wide through many different times
What did you see there?
I saw the saints with their toys
What did you see there?
I saw all knowledge destroyed
I travelled far and wide through many different times
I travelled far and wide through prisons of the cross
What did you see there?
The power and glory of sin
What did you see there?
The blood of Christ on their skins
I travelled far and wide through many different times
I travelled far and wide and unknown martyrs died
What did you see there?
I saw the one sided trials
What did you see there?
I saw the tears as they cried
They had tears in their eyes
Tears in their eyes
Tears in their eyes

Interzone 30:59
I walked through the city limits
(Someone talked me in to try and do it)
Attracted by some force within it
(Had to close my eyes to get close to it)
Around a corner where a prophet lay
(Saw the place where she'd had a room to stay)
A wire fence where the children played
(Saw the bed where the body lay)
And I was looking for a friend of mine
(And I had no time to waste)
Yeah, looking for some friends of mine
The cars screeched, hear the sound on dust
(Heard a noise, just a car outside)
Metallic blue turned red with rust
(Pulled in close by the building's side)
In a group, all forgotten youth
(Had to think, collect my senses now)
Are turned on to a knife-edged view
(Find some places where my friends don't know)
And I was looking for a friend of mine
(And I had no time to waste)
Yeah, looking for some friends of mine
Down the dark streets, the houses looked the same
I walked round and round, they nailed me to a tree
Trying to find a clue, trying to find a way to get out
Four twelve windows, ten in a row (behind a wall, where a room to go)
The light shined like a neon show (see the deep mellow warmth of the glow)
No place to stop, no place to go (no time to lose, had to keep on going)
I guess they died some time ago
(I guess they died some time ago)
And I was looking for a friend of mine
(And I had no time to waste)
Yeah, looking for some friends of mine
I Remember Nothing 33:15
We were strangers.
We were strangers, for way too long, for way too long,
We were strangers, for way too long.
Violent, violent,
Were strangers.
Get weak all the time, may just pass the time,
Me in my own world, and you there beside,
The gaps are enormous, we stare from each side,
We were strangers for way too long.
Violent, more violent, his hand cracks the chair,
Moves on reaction, then slumps in despair,
Trapped in a cage and surrendered too soon,
Me in my own world, the one that you knew,
For way too long.
We were strangers for way too long.
We were strangers,
We were strangers for way too long,

Never in my life a band gave me so much curiosity, with the music, a country, a city, the band itself and even the person who marked that band. The Beatles aroused curiosities, Nirvana the same, but they will never overcome what Joy Division generates for me. A band that showed up at the most difficult time of my life. Maybe it's the screams I could never give. Listening to Ian I feel very close, I don't know if it's personal. Nor do I want to take it as that I am going through the same thing as him, far from it, they were just difficult moments that luckily I was able to overcome. But Joy Division and everything since its inception, its journey and what it left in the general culture is impressive. I can say that I am a fan of Joy Division (Being a person who hates fanaticism).

Pure poetry. Heard Ian Curtis lyrics are nowadays studied in some universities, and am not surprised. They were as deep, weird, original and hypnotic as they are nowadays. This is one of the best and more remarkable cds in modern music. His second one, Closer, keeps the quality level, though find this one his best. Its darkness and Romanticism still touches me. JD is different to any other group or music. Anycase, Curtis did not died because of the torture of his epilepsy, nor due to depression. His suicide was linked with him being torn between his lover and his wife, for what I read. He loved both women, but his wife was gonna quit him, having known about his lover. He did not want to lose her. According to what read, this was the main reason that lead him to commit suicide. Of course his epilepsy had no cure, he would have had to cope with his whole life and he knew it. It made him suffer a lot and so, it also collaborated to his death. But apparently, this wasn't the main reason of his suicide. Curtis lived in despair. All his inner drama is more or less revealed in his lyrics. Think was kind of a genius. He No doubt is one of the most moving artist you could hear. Excellent, deep, clever and romantic music. 🎵🎶💎👍❤️
I watched this film many years ago about Manchester's music scene. It was called "24 Hour Party People." I immediately noticed the singer protraying Ian Curtis. I became fascinated with Ian because I thought he was a genius. I started to listen to their music, and I haven't looked back. I love listening to Ian's lyrics; I consider him to be a true poet.

SENSACIONAL!!!
Reminds of walking to school back in the late 80’a, just jamming...and feeling❤️

How are these musicians not a part of the rock and roll hall of Fame? Vote today, a lot. 😀
RIP beautiful soul. We will never forget you.
Thank you for the little info snippet in the description. Always appreciate learning something.
For anyone wondering what the jagged mountains in the logo is all about, it’s a spectrogram of a star imploding…
It's actually a very dense rotating dead star: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSR_B1919%2B21
@@AshleyMooreAMS dead star is appropriate when talking about Joy Division
It looks like the Panama isthmus
Been into this band for well over 3 decades now and I still find it mindboggling how they successfully managed to reinvent themselves in Ian Curtis´s absence .
Their transformation is fascinating to me. Started out as a punk band and morphed into a goth band, changed their name and then morphed from a goth band into a dance band. And, for me, it all works as a whole (although I refuse to acknowledge any of the albums released after Peter Hook left). I can't think of another band I like that has changed that much over the years - Faith No More and Ministry are probably the closest.
Add to that the mystery of discovering these two bands in the early 90s in the Bible Belt of the U.S., where I knew almost NOTHING about either band for YEARS, and it made for a real adventure. Hell...even the record sleeves gave you nothing to work with!
@@derkeheath5172 it was almost impossible to find out much about any band before the internet unless they were huge and had books written about them, even reading Rolling Stone mag, you just got tidbits of info.
Ah, happy memories!!
The North of England ruled music for a good few years, as well as JD we had The Fall, Magazine and John Cooper Clarke then seeding the Liverpool new-psychedelia scene, ending with Madchester, Frankie and The Smiths all taking Joy Division’s innovations in different directions. There were great scenes out of Leeds and Sheffield too.
No other fucking album sounds like this.
I’ve been a punk all
My life into all the obscure bands and hardcore bands. All of it. This album still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
G. G. ALLEN IS GOD
When i see things in my and other countries then "wilderness" start playing in my mind. Great album
Listening to this everyday 😊
Great album. Disorder, Insight and Shadowplay are my favorite tracks.❤
An album far ahead of its time cheers for sharing 👍🏻
A friend played this for me one day in the fall of '79. I made a cassette of it and ended up buying my own import copy soon after. JD were an enigma to those of us in the States who didn't live in NYC nor get access to The Face or Melody Maker. For a spell I didn't know who was in the band, what they looked like or much beyond the music & the graphics. And perhaps that was good for the moment. I could focus better. I eventually learned band members' names and this was hammered terribly when Ian's passing was announced. I wanted to see them more than anyone and that was never going to happen. Then Closer was released. I bought everything as it trickled over the pond. Listening to this LP, and then Closer, it felt like the spiral of a B-17 with it's tail shot off, in slow motion. The demos, live recordings and oddities (ie the flexi) are there to fill in the story of a developing group of musicians. We now have films, video docs and hundreds of pictures to parce through. But it doesn't soften the blow of realizing what might have been. 42 years today.
interesting inside-view.thx!
How did you find out about Ian's news? I mean, there wasn't that much awareness of the band at the time in America. It makes me curious how was the announcement of his death in those times.
Greetings from Argentina.
@@rodrigocorro1465 I heard about it from some friends in the record shop. One was a college radio DJ who was very clued in to what was happening in the British music scene. There may have been other mentions in fanzines and indie mags like Trouser Press but where I lived, information was rare (ie not LA, NYC or Boston) and I had not yet discovered that John Peel was on the BBC's world service via shortwave. Rolling Stone ran an article called "Life and Death in the UK" in 1981 where they told a bit about the band along with some info on PiL's Flowers of Romance release. Cheers, Rodrigo!
@@rodrigocorro1465 most people heard first when John Peel, very shocked, announced it over the air.
Like the B-17 image.
Fantastic album, even now.
NICE HAIR! U LOOKS SO GOOD! SCHOENER BOB!
It remains a pleasure to listen to Ian's cheerful songs ... timeless.
Muchas gracias x no poner publicidad, eres un crack🎉

Jesus, I love this album so so much.
Thank you, i love this album. Holds a special place for this hard-core skin.
It’s honestly baffling to me how amazing this album is.
I love this album... I can't describe all feelings what im feeling when I'm listening this masterpiece. "Simple, but good", huh.
It is difficult to believe that I had not listened to this album until today. The band I was quite familiar with, but I'd just not heard their debut. Thank you for your time and effort.
I just started listening to this album for the first time a month ago.
Incredible stuff.
@@fergusjoel6886 Just coming back to this album after a couple of years away, simply to reestablish that "She's Lost Control" has my favorite interplay between a bass and a guitar ever. Reestablished indeed.
Better late than ever. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have over the years.
Closer is better imo but both incredible works.
¡Noooo maaameeees Melviiin!
¡¿Pues cuántos años tienes recabrón'!
I was about 20 when Unknown Pleasures was released, this was before there was any organized Goth presence, label or genre.
It was different than punk, different than alternative, it wasn't ska or rockabilly, it wasn't rock, pop, synth, prog, hard rock, southern rock or anything I had ever heard..
It was DARK and BROODING, it was INTROSPECTIVE and CONTEMPLATIVE, it was RUMINATIVE and it forced me into a mood that music had never made me experience before. I was not sure emotionally how to react to it, I was not sure if I should love it or hate it, but I kept coming back to it, over and over...
It made me FEEL...
Espectacular!!
When you got the spirit and have the feeling. 🖤
Quanti ricordi, avevo anche la maglietta con la copertina del disco👍
Great to stumble across this today
happy birthday, Ian
Wow, this music was ahead of it's time! R.I.P. Ian and I wish Joy Division continued on.
