i don't think many people realize just how common this type of thinking is? wen my grandma's cancer was diagnosed, the entire family hid it from her, even when she was going in for chemo and had no idea what it was for.
the fact that i get to see this story that i completely understand on the big screen? directed by a woman that looks like me? with actors and actresses that look like me? in languages that i speak?
i think i might cry
i dont look like you, my family is south american, and i dont know much about eastern culture -- but im so excited that both you and i will be able to watch the same story and understand the same feelings.
Yeah they did something somewhat similar to my grandmother. It's not that uncommon.
That's good because it shows that there is something very real here. Cross culturally I found this a great exploration of East and West. Films particularly about Asian Americans are less explored so it's refreshing to see someone make something like this. Granted I'm not a gender pointer, I think films like this could be made by a male as well, Ang Lee has proven that. I'm just glad that the trailer in terms of film-making actually looks good if not great. Stories of cancer are very universal, especially if it's about family.

@@kingkylie9655 Lol Dense is the word, but not used well in this context. Look I'm fine with a female chinese making a film about her experiences I really am, but will it be good? I don't personally believe that you're ascribed sexuality dictates your ability to be an artist.
Some of my favorite writers are women who wrote about men. Great stories. In fact unlike you I know there are asian women who are writers and creators in their own right, I'm aware of Asian female works. This may be the first time you seeing an asian woman telling a story for me it's like I don't tenth or something.
Look I'm bashing not the gender. In fact its true there aren't a lot of females particular chinese making films. I am saying it's not a requirement to have a certain sexual organ to make a good movie. AND you should judge anyone's work fairly regardless of gender and race.
Hey I’m Chinese and I want to say the actress that plays the grandmother is one of the most respected artists in China. That alone shows how much effort A24 put into this.

Totally agree. I want to see more of the world through the screen. My favourite thing about travelling is looking at life through the eyes of a local. Each foreign movie is like travelling and being a part of a story somewhere else in the world, and who doesn't love travelling?
@@a_kemiii I don't think its because Americans don't make the effort , As a long time sub to Viki I can tell you from the ratings and comments that the love for foreign films and Drams is there. Hollywood doesn't represent the true diversity of US audiences. That's why its such a big deal to us when movies like "Black Panther" or Crazy Rich Asians come out. They'er not perfect but they'er all steps in the right direction.

Actually, the "good lie" phenomenon is explored on several different levels during the movie. The daughter "lies" to her parents about the fellowship application; the grand-father "lies" about smoking to nai nai; the caterer "lies" about the lobster; everyone lies about how easy it is make a million dollars in China; there's lots presented in this movie! Moral: Lies that harm people are bad. Lies that protect people are good!

Older relatives from every ethnic background or culture have these concerns and/or ask these sort of questions.
Lost my grandfather this way last year, he was 87. It was stage 3 lung cancer when he was diagnosed so we hid it from him and told him it was pneumonia. We didn't try chemo or anything invasive, just tried to keep his pain at minimum. Everyone flew back and we had a good 3 months together before he slipped into a coma and passed away. A week before he went into coma I made him braised pork with noodles and he finished the whole bowl. I'll always remember this.

The line "you think one's life belongs to oneself...In the East, a person's life is a part of a whole. Family." was what made me tear up. I cannot count how many times my father and my family have said this to me, or at least something along the lines of this, and I never really understood it as a child. How could our lives not belong to ourselves-they're OUR lives, aren't they?
It was not until I got older that I truly understood the underlying meaning behind this sentiment. It wasn't really to be understood, but rather to be felt. All the times I was back in China, there was a feeling of wholeness-of being utterly whole and complete when I was with my family. It just felt right-when we all gathered, there was a sense of finally being home. It's something that I can't describe, but something this trailer was able to express perfectly.
I am so excited to watch this movie-everything down to the very last detail is so accurate. The decorations in the grandma's home, everyone gathered in the kitchen and living room in slippers while grandma cooks, everything looks perfect.

The problem is US culture! They're as cold as northern countries in Europe.
I'm from Argentina and our families feel/act the same way as Chinese families.
We're a whole, we gather IF we can every Sunday to have lunch, we visit our elders in the weeks or during weekends, we hung out with friends we consider like brothers etc.

this aspect of "saving face" is everything in asian culture... my mom's korean and she'd always be trying to make me keep secrets from anyone outside our family like it was some catastrophic event, despite my urges to be sincere with the people in my life and talk about the situations... I relate to this clashing of eastern and western mindsets Awkwafina has in this film too much...
My mom's Indian and she used to do that too. Till really bad stuff happened and it gradually dawned on her that she doesn't have to care what others think of her and how they judge her. They will, irrespective of whatever. She grew to become a different person and I'm so proud of her. It's been six years since we lost her but I always think of how strange and brave her journey has been. I used to hide stuff too from people but no longer do it now. My mom taught me that.
it's not really about saving face, it's actually a chinese tradition as we say that the fear or sadness of disappointing the family is something that those ill may feel, which would make it even worse for them. i'm so excited to see the exploration of these themes, esp. with this clash of the west and east in terms of values. it'll be super interesting, and the film looks amazing!!

was not a criticism of your comment, sorry if it came out that way! i totally agree with your statement-it's definitely true. just for this particular tradition in china, it's done for a different reason. not really about saving face(which seems more like a negative thing), but rather to not put any burden on those already ill (which can be argued as a good/bad thing, but definitely done with good intentions). just wanted to highlight that :)

My grandmother died of liver cancer she was 98 she lived a good life. When we found out she has cancer we brought her to the hospital and she said she doesn't want to be treated anymore. Doctors said she has 6 months left. Turned out it was 3 years :) rest in peace Lola.

Also, being progressive shouldn’t mean ignoring the nuances between race and sex, but respecting them.

This movie is a breath of fresh air. I'm not Chinese but I'm happy to get a glimpse into a culture so different from mine yet the same.
The movie was beautiful, really deep, I laughed and cried, I'm Hispanic and I can totally relate with the cultural references, the best movie of 2019 so far.

May be the same reason that Chinese people LOVED Coco. Coco was a huge, surprise hit in Asia. Coco grossed more in China than it did in the US

@GetGoodTryHard It is actually more about empathy and love than convenience. It is to spare the person that pain that comes with dying. Instead they get to enjoy their lasts days fully without fear and surrounded by family.

SPOILER ALERT!!
1. It’s based on the director, Lulu Wang’s real story
2. Lulu Wang’s Nai Nai is still very much alive, six years after the diagnosis and the story
3. She still doesn’t know anything about all of this
4. They shoot the movie in Nai Nai’s house and hometown, Changchun. She’s still in the dark about all of it, so the entire cast and production crew had to keep the story under wraps anytime she comes to the set
5. Nai Nai’s real sister got a part in the movie as Nai Nai’s sister, yes, as herself

I'm Indian, but when my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, we did the same thing. She was near the end of her 80s and already so very sick that we knew, if she went for chemo she'd more likely die of the side effects than be cured. So we never told her. Figured it would be better to let her live out the rest of her life as comfortably as possible, still able to enjoy food and walk around without shooting pain, still living with optimism instead of a sense of doom that she was prone to. We spent every moment we could with her since we all either lived with her or a block away. When she died, she died of old age, years later. I don't regret never telling her; it left her happiness she otherwise would have pushed away
but in reality i think the patient has the right to know what really goes on ..or the doctor would tell the patient the truth? i'm not sure
@@kawingma7354 Her story presumably did take place "in reality." Not trying to pick a fight here, but I think your usage of that expression may have been reflective of a subconscious distinction you hold between the Western world, which is real to you, and the Other, which is not.

Love this! Lemme add a lil bit of cultural nuance to the line at the end, where the grandma says 'stupid child', since it impacted me the most!
While the line 'Stupid child' might confuse non-native Chinese speakers and seem like an insult, but it can't be further from the truth.
'Stupid child' or ’傻孩子‘ is a saying that is commonly used by elders towards young children in an affectionate way. It's actually used when kids behave in a naive or innocent manner and the elder wishes to express their affection towards their innocent behavior.
While the word '傻' can be translated into 'stupid', it's proper meaning is perhaps closer to 'a lack of knowledge', which is why it's used towards children when one does something innocent or naive.
There's an extra significance to this too since in Chinese culture, people frequently prefer express their emotions through subtext, and very rarely directly use the words 'I love you' and such. When the Grandma refers to Awkwafina's character, who's no longer child, in that way, it can also be interpreted as Grandma saying 'You will always be my baby' or 'I love you as just much as I did, after all these years'.

The point I think is that crazy rich Asians proved to a mainstream audience that an all Asian cast can be interesting and stand on its own as a movie. Also it familiarized American audiences with certain aspects of Asian culture like showing how deeply imbedded the importance of Family is in Chinese culture
So it makes a movie like this feel less foreign for an audience outside of just Asians in general. Helps coax people into giving movies like this a chance

I love when movies tell new stories.
Especially when they explore other cultures and point of views.
It's not the race of the director that is to praise, it's her talent, her vision and her knowledge.
I am Chinese-American and the same thing happened in my family. Growing up in America, it was so hard for me to understand this thinking. It just seemed so cruel. I think by seeing this film I will have a better understanding why.
Its about Harmony, and that theres no good way to spread bad news. Its not unique to us but all Confucian influenced cultures in Asia.
The film is absolutely amazing, and the lie to protect the grandma is very well explained. I actually agree with what the family was trying to do here, let her live the rest of her years without having to worry everyday about dying. It's a burden the rest of the family is willing to take for the sake and happiness of their beloved Nai Nai

Reminds me of Ang Lee’s the Wedding Banquet (SPOILER) where the mother knew all the time that her son was gay. In Asian culture, especially the elderly prefer not to speak about troublesome issues such as foreboding illnesses or taboo subjects but of recent only a few are changing that culture. When my father found out about his failing health, he talked about and planned his life celebration, but my stepmother on the other hand preferred not to speak of her own mortality and how to best prepared for her when it comes time for her. The inevitable is coming but some people preferred not to talk about it because they are in denial or just want everything to be as normal as possible so the loved ones won’t be burdened by the person’s well being. In truth, the person of interest, their loved ones in a sense have already known the issue and discussed the possibility of such an event with other members of the family behind the person’s back. Everyone knows, just everyone keeps quite about it. That’s how I grew up observing my culture.

I saw this movie two years ago with my mom. Now, our family is living through exactly this. Except now we can't go back at all.
It's true, too dam true. But you know what's the worst? She knows, the grandma knows, they always know, but they play along.. for the sake of the family, once again. This reciprocal thing for the family, its the essence of the east.

I’m not Chinese, I’m Zimbabwean but I love how similar the beliefs about family are between our cultures. I feel like most people who aren’t from the west view family as the most important thing. I can’t wait to see this movie!

When my grandmother was dying of cancer, my family didn't tell her either. I'm curious to watch this and see the parallels between this and my family.
If you don't mind my asking, how exactly does that work? In the US, it would be illegal to disclose private medical info to family members and not the patient because of HIPAA. Not familiar with the Chinese laws on patient privacy, but I'm guessing it must be different...?
My family also didn't tell my gramma about her stage 4 cancer, and I had to leave Taiwan without giving her a true goodbye. She always told me that she wanted to see me grow up and get married. It's because we Asians took care of our elderly parents. Doctors will disclosed the information to the family members because they know if anything happens the children will take care of the parents. Besides it has to do with wanting to protect the patient's feelings/not wanting our parents to get upset.
^^ yup, in China, the doctors typically will tell family members. the family will decide what to do, but it is tradition to not tell the parents.
@@effyvoux Most of the time the doctors would call the family first and then the family will decide if they will say it to the patient.
My beloved grandfather died on Wednesday and even this trailer broke my heart. Maybe after some healing I’ll be able to watch the actual movie.

I'm Egyptian and grew up in Canada. When my aunt in Egypt got stomach cancer, the whole family kept it from her and told her it was a stomach ulcer. I was so uncomfortable with it and kept trying to convince my mom that they need to tell her. She passed away 2 years ago but we didn't find out until after she died :( Not because we weren't close, my mom and her were sooooooo close. But I guess they must have told my aunt at some point that she had cancer, but she decided to keep it from my mom so that she wouldn't worry and interrupt her life to fly from Canada to see her. I was so that they hadn't told us so that we could have gone to see her before she died, and I was especially upset for my mom that she didn't get to say goodbye. Obviously she was so shocked and devastated but she kept telling me that they just didn't want her to worry. Fortunately, we had just spent 2 weeks with her in Egypt the year before. Honestly, I'm still not okay with it and I'm still sad about it but I guess I don't fully understand this aspect of Egyptian culture, even though I do consider myself very Egyptian in many ways.

This happened to my Babanne (Turkish Grandma) when she was dying. No one told her, I didn't understand why. I grew up in Australia where everyone has hyper control over their own health - even if it's bad we reward someone making decisions on their own to benefit themselves and only themselves. So the idea of a life being not ones own but also belonging to their family made no sense. It is only starting to make sense now.
This is such an interesting concept, I can't wait to watch it.
I'm half chinese and half Aussie, and I love My Big Fat Greek Wedding because there are so many similarities with asian and european "family-centric" culture.
My mum was living overseas and her family didn't tell her her dad died, so she couldn't even attend the funeral. They did it to spare her feelings and so she wouldn't rush home after making a new life overseas, but she's never forgiven them on some level for not letting her be there to say goodbye to her father :-(

I was so moved by this trailer. I appreciate the fact that this trailer reflects how truly complicated family dynamics are in Asian culture. It's sometimes so hard to convey to others how tricky and complicated it can be, especially those brought up in Western culture. I'm so happy to see a film out there that explores those dynamics.
I thought everyone was different and it's wrong to paint people with a broad brush? Now you're telling me for the most part Asian families all act the same. How come its okay for you to stereotype Asian families but if I do it people get butthurt?

I know myself all too well than to know, this is one to watch at home not in a theater. No one needs to witness the quivering lip in public...as this one hits way too close to home for me. Shes great, and maybe in this sort of old school v new school cultural narrative, could be a breakthrough role for the last awk
you got to watch it in theatre! It's okay I cried openly and plus we got to show our appreciation for his by paying to see it in theatre so there will be more movies like this.
This trailer got me. I’m 27 and have battled 2 different cancers in the last 2 years, stuff like this is so emotionally comforting. Really looking forward to this.
This is hands down my favorite film of 2019. I loved every second of it. I’m going to see it again next week.
The fact that I haven't even watched the movie yet and I'm already crying by just seeing the trailer means its definitely a genuine movie.
At the end when grandma says "傻孩子“ she meant "silly child" not "stupid child".
Maybe this is city folk thing, when my grandma and grandpa were going to pass, they wanted their caskets made well before hand. When my grandpa fell, he didn't pass, nor did he for many years, but he kept his casket in the spare room with the peanuts and flour. Same with my grandma. We believe death is just a part of life.
Side note: My grandparents were farmers, peanut farmers. From a more rural part of China.
I also like how Billie smiled after her grandma called her that. She understands the love and compassion behind it and I relate so much to it.

As a senior who was diagnosed with a stage 3 rare carcinosarcoma this year, if it had been possible for my family to keep the truth from me, I would have been PISSED!! Cancer is opportunity in crisis. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but I have found a strength I never knew I had, I have met some of the dearest, bravest souls who inspire me to be a warrior, that I can survive cancer and add years to my life. Cheating someone from these experiences, and many more, with a fatalistic mentality that cancer means death is greatly underestimating the patient and science. I know many survivors who have good lives and are still alive 10-15 years after a later stage diagnosis.
Family often "protect" to protect their own discomfort, not the diagnosed family member.

It made me teary eyed. On the part where they said that in the east, your life dont just belong to you but as a part that completes the family resonates to me so much. I grew up in Asia and at times i feel suffocated by my family and that my life dont truly belong to myself. Then I left to study abroad and I realized the beauty of holding each other in good and bad times. Roots anchor ones life during the inevitable storms that we may face.

bag ofhammers I know the feeling. Every now and then, I’d think back to my Grandma hugging me, and just how much I took her for granted. Her warm hugs, happy go lucky nature. Her bad sides, her good sides. I would give ANYTHING to get just one last hug from her again.
This film looks great. Heart breaking and sweet at the same time. I really want to see it.
Funnily enough many years ago now, my great grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and my grandfather decided not to tell her. They told her not to worry that she would be fine. She was in her 60s. She lived until she was 95 and died of old age.

this really hit me hard, especially when he said "you think that one's life belongs to themselves. in the east, a person's life belongs to a whole. family." and it reminded me of how my grandfather died last year and we never told my grandmother who was also dying. i don't think we told her she was dying either. she died shortly after him by a few months, both died at home.

Well, what they don't show you is that the Chinese government was conducting a medical experiment on the grandmother, and her children are hired as informants to conceal the information from Awkwafina since she was a baby. Then the grandma turns into a zombie. Pretty crazy film I will tell you.

I'm getting to see this two weeks from yesterday, and I could hardly be more excited.
EDIT: Just saw it, and it's a lovely film. Awkwafina and Zhao Shuzhe (Nai Nai) are absolutely perfect, and it's just a very moving, funny story about mortality and the secrets we keep to preserve peace-of-mind for ourselves and others.

I cried after the trailer. I can't wait to see the movie. My grandmother passed away a year and half ago, while I was studying abroad. My family hid the fact from me for months to not worry me while I was in school. This is all too relatable. Thanks for telling the story.
I'm so sorry to hear that. I was studying abroad in Spain this past June & my nana died. My mom didnt tell me right away because she didn't want to be burdened. There's a 7 hour time difference between Spain and Wisconsin. I called my mom every night before bed. One day I called my mom and she put the phone to my Nana's ear and told me to say that I loved her. I did. She died 30 minutes later (while I was asleep). I was extremely close with her, so to be in another country and not be able to give an official goodbye crushed me. Sorry, dont mean to tell my life story but I completely understand.

This is exactly what's happening in my family right now. My grandma doesn't know that she has cancer and we chose not to tell her. We want her to live freely without worry and pass away with minimum pain. My mom's been visiting Korea much more frequently so she can take care of her.
Last September my grandfather passed away and that was the first time in a decade that most of us except 3 people were all together. It's sad that it's death that brings us together.
