This casting...its so...perfect.
I just saw an early screening of this film and I must say that it was easily the most horrifying movie-going experience I’ve ever had. The movie latched into my own personal fears quite early on and the pure terror did not leave until the end. There are some bits of imagery that are now burned into my brain and I want them to leave before I go to sleep. Seriously, I am a horror movie fanatic. I’ve seen an impossibly long list of horror movies spanning multiple decades, and nothing I’ve ever seen has been anywhere near as scary as this was for me. I’ve never genuinely whimpered because of fear before I saw this movie and I can now say that I have. This film stabs you in the gut with terror right from the beginning and the rest of the movie feels like they’re twisting the fear around and around inside of you until your intestines have turned to sludge. It’s fucking terrifying on a level I cannot verbally express. Please, for the love of god, GO SEE THIS MOVIE. If Toni Collette doesn’t get an academy award for her performance in this movie, I will be extremely upset.

I've seen loads of horror films and only a few have been truly worth it. I was disappointed with Witch (made by same studio) as it got really boring. I hope this film is not like that in terms of pacing and is scary throughout.... Can you confirm that?
Fraaz Akhter the first hour of the movie is very slow and nothing really happens. Zero jump scares. Just immersive screenwriting for each character. Like you’re almost in the movie and that’s what scared many people among other things lol
Fraaz Akhter Nick is 100% correct. The scary things in this movie wouldn’t be quite as scary if the writer and director didn’t give the audience time to develop a near-personal relationship with the characters. Every single character has layers upon layers to their personalities and when scary stuff happened to them, it genuinely made me feel as if I was in danger along with them. It’s also not scary in the “jump scares galore” or the “there’s blood EVERYWHERE” ways. The director chose to hide things in the background where you might miss them, but when you see it you can’t unsee it and it sticks with you. There is also a ton of tension between the family members. Through the movie, the son goes from being a stubborn, rebellious teen who doesn’t want to listen to his parents, all the way to being completely helpless and calling for his mommy. It’s utter emotional terrorism and I cannot get it out of my head. It’s scary in a completely different way than any other movie I’ve seen because it feels like it could actually happen. The supernatural stuff actually scared me more because of how upsetting and terrifying (in the “what if this happened to MY family” way) the family dynamic is.

I'm on Peter's side. Leaving his sister downstairs alone in a party was stupid, but he never meant for any of it to happen, let alone take his sister to the party with him. Sure, he could have said sorry, but what is there really to say in a situation where not just one, but two people are partially responsible for Charlie's death? Annie chose to play guilt games with Peter, leading to this confrontation, and she has the audacity to act surprised when he loses his shit. Not just surprised, but effectively blame Peter for Charlie's death. You can take the view that Peter solely caused Charlie's death - though it's not mine - but how is this productive in moving on as a family after a traumatic incident? Annie was crazy throughout the whole movie and definitely the destabilizer of the family. She tried to have her unborn child miscarried for god's sake. The line, "I am your mother", is a desperate attempt at putting herself in a position of authority, yet it's a position she never truly wanted. That's why she fails.
Very well written, I'd agree, with the additional point that all the supernatural goings on make this a bit of a tougher analysis. Obviously debates can be had over the symbolic/metaphorical nature of the cult and supernatural things, but if we take them at face value, I think we'd blame Annie a lot less. Her grandma (obviously) and the rest of the cult would get more blame.
Actually she wanted to kill Peter when he wasn't born yet bc he's male and her mother would put Paimon inside since they needed a male body so it's actually saving him. She hid Peter from her mom his whole childhood but when Charlie was born, her mom breastfed her to put Paimon inside her, but Charlie is female so it didn't work or smth.
He left his kid sister alone at a party to go smoke weed, forgivable. He tries to save her and ends up killing her, forgivable. He then proceeds to drive home and leave his sisters headless bloody corpse in his parents car so that his mother can discover it in the morning. He then never says he is sorry. I agree his mother has her faults and is off her rocker..but I can totally understand her side of this argument.

@Daniel Valdez true. I'd say black panther was a solid 75, maybe even 70. But then again its because its Marvel plus its Black empowerment. Same with Crazy Rich Asians, for Asian empowerment. But critics tend to destroy horror movies but this one really deserves the praise.
@Daniel Valdez Logsn was good, better than BP. It's hard to compare Logan with Hereditary though. Since I love horror films I'd probably watch Hereditary again since it had a bunch of clues and riddles. Plus it freaked me out.

After having the funeral Annie starts to find out the dark and twisted past that her mother had. I really can’t say anything more because if I did I would spoil something big

Finally, a scene in a movie where the kid doesn't get away with talking to their mom as if she didn't bring them into the world. I hate that television and film have conditioned society to feel that kids are their parents equal; they are not.
Anyways . . . I wanna see this movie! I love Toni Colette.
This was one of the only highlights of the movie unfortunately. It's the same story as the Witch, but the witch did it way better.
How is that possible? The Witch is about religious hysteria in the face of the unknown, the destructive effects of repression and fanatical devotion, scapegoating... Its also so specific to that setting and period in time. The Salem Witch Trials are testament to Puritan terror of adolescent female sexuality. The movie considers an alternate history in which their persecution backfired; Puritans self-destruct, freeing girls instead of sacrificing them. I know previews can be misleading, but Hereditary seems to be about personal not societal self-destruction.
Nah my favourite scene is when Annie is floating in midair and slicing her head off slowly with a wire, ugh that noise haunts me

Mark Moa You know I have no problem with your opinion but I would have to respectfully disagree on your opinion because when watching this movie I was constantly shaking and breathing heavily and not in the good way obviously. I thought there was a variety of highlights in this movie, but I won’t tell them obviously because I don’t want to spoil anybody that hasn’t watched it yet. I thought this movie was fantastic. And I haven’t seen The Witch so I can’t say anything about that until I do, but all I’m really trying to say is that Hereditary did have many more highlights than just this single scene. But this is just my opinion.
This movie is the very definition of pretentious. And it was boring as well, a great combination.
It's call the best movie there are a lor of diferent videos about it but no, there is always a person who nobody knows and cares about that has his bad opinion about the movie
Honestly, I have to disagree. I don’t think it’s pretentious in the slightest, I just think it’s slower paced in order to let the audience get to know the characters before they start to have horrible things done to them.
With that said, I’m going to have to agree with the people above. If you went into this expecting Paranormal Activity and Insidious, you were mistaken.
I don't mind a slow burn horror movie, the Innocents, the Haunting (Robert Wise) and the Innkeepers are all examples and are far better. I'm all for getting to know the characters but when the characters are so unlikable it kind of defeats the purpose.
The Short Horror Films of Richard Reiter I honestly didn’t think any of the characters were unlikable. I think they were all EXTREMELY interesting and made realistic decisions. There are so many unrealistic horror movie characters that this was a very refreshing movie for me to see. In a time where the only horror movie characters that exist are generic annoying blonde girls that don’t know how to do anything and bro-tank jocks that are too stupid to do anything but be confrontational, seeing realistic characters that aren’t always nice to people portrayed in a plausible situation for a horror movie is extremely refreshing.
