Love how this movie focuses on a black American family without having to go through the gang or drug life plot. It focuses on a real relationship between a father and son, and how it affects the other child. My fav movie ever.
@ImAMarinesMom I’d rather have a raw film than a happy dandy film. This film is real. People go through things like. Drugs are real. Partying is real. Domestic violence is real. Family is real. The movie isn’t saying react to your problems with this. The movie shows the raw truth of being pushed to your limit. It shows the struggle of family. My older brother went to jail himself and I couldn’t make myself go and see him because I held so much anger yet guilt about how our relationship could have affected his choices. The sister found someone to confide in besides her brother since he wasn’t there anymore. Not everything has a great outcome. The father pushing his son is something many people go through. He disguised the stress with it him being “a loving father”. You didn’t take time to analyze the film enough to see the deeper meaning behind it.
@ImAMarinesMom To each their own, but don't envy what you can't see or are mentally unable to grasp. You should probably stick to mainstream movies because arthouse films are definitely NOT for the majority.

It is an art form. Everyone is left with their own opinions on the film but it is not a lesson on how to live your life.

@ImAMarinesMom Waves is a masterpiece of human emotion. It's a self expression of Trey Edward Shults' life and his experiences within his own youth, told through an artful piece.
The Drugs, Sex, Partying, Hitting your Pregnant girlfriend are literally played out by someone who's reached their limit, and are clearly depicted in a negative light. He in no way is meant to inspire youth.
The "message" (if there even is meant to be one) is that you shouldn't pressure your kids into growing into this perfect mould that you created for them, otherwise they become a monster. And it's strange that you don't pick up on this because you literally mention it in your copy and paste condescending reply to everyone who praised this film.
I pray for the older generation that cannot fathom the concept of pouring one's emotions out through film and ultimately critiquing it because it lacks a self fulfilling "message."
Not everyone has a happy ending, that's just how it is. Waves is not meant to make you feel happy, idk why on earth you'd critique it for being "just depression".
Btw, this isn't a kid's movie. Maybe take your kids to watch Cars where narcissism gets you everywhere you want in life, or Frozen which is a perfect textbook example of isolation and parents not understanding the values of being honest to their young kids.

I just watched this in theatres yesterday and BAWLED MY EYES OUT, to the point a theatre worker came up to check on me when the credits rolled in. What I love is how this movie isn't emotionally manipulative but is so real, complex and fully fleshed out.
It is beautiful and it broke my heart. I will still think back to this movie and start crying!!
Me too!!! Mainly because of the brother and sister relationship. I imagined my brother and I in that situation and I couldn’t imagine that happening and us no longer being able to see each other everyday, call each other, etc. idk it just hit home

When you love someone, it is possible to feel as though you "hate" them, but really you hate the actions and factors involved which led to them being taken away from you. 2 months ago my brother had a covid scare, and my initial reaction was hysterical and focus on the anger and lack of forgiveness that I would feel if he died and had done irresponsible things, like partying with large groups, and the consequence was losing him. It is normal
@ImAMarinesMom I see what you're saying, but the movie wasn't all depression and hopelessness or bad morales. I actually think it promotes a LOT of hope in face of tragedy & strife, and also has good moral themes. Here are a few examples:
- choices young people make have consequences. A lot of times, young people think they're invincible and won't get caught or won't have to face consequences. You can see that in the drugs & alcohol and driving under the influence. When Tyler had sex with his girlfriend, he didn't think about the possibility of her wanting to keep a baby. When he hit his girlfriend, he wasn't trying to kill her; he didn't think about the consequences. I think this movie shows how no matter what age you are, your choices have an impact that can be absolutely damaging and irreversible.
- our judgemental society. Honestly, if I read the news and saw what Tyler did, I'd write him off just like all the other people did on social media in the movie. But actually, Tyler had so much potential... he's talented, smart, at times selfish and immature but also kind and fun. I'm not at all excusing what he did, but he's a kid who needed more healthy guidance - he's not a malicious, cold-blooded murderer.
- family love is intricate and complex. Not only do the main characters show this, the daughter's boyfriend and his forgiveness with his father show this.
- our mistakes teach us so much. Like the father was so gentle with his daughter in the latter half of the movie. When he asked her how she's doing and added "it's okay to not be okay", that showed his character development and how he realized his perfectionistic tendencies & way of showing love was suffocating.
- the end when Tyler prays alone at the cafeteria. I sobbed so hard. To me, it was a scene of humility and redemption and hope.
Anyway, there's many more, but I think it portrayed family relationships, imperfect love, forgiveness and redemption really well.

A24 is honestly on FIRE in 2019. We have already had movies like Climax, Midsommar and The Farewell. And then this, The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems. This studio and Fox Searchlight are keeping cinema alive.

A24 isn't in charge of their films' cinematography, that's the individual cinematographers within the movies' crews. A24 simply selects films and regulates distribution of them! They just happen to select films with amazing cinematographers attached to them.

As I type this, I have just finished watching this movie. I literally couldn't leave my chair, it captivated me, my entire being. All the struggles I've been through, the hurt, brokenheartedness, loss of a loved one etc. It was like sitting in a room and allowing someone to comfort you letting you know that they understand. Thank you for creating this movie.
The movie is so relatable to every human trauma and experiences--love, pain, family, and heartbreak. I enjoyed it for how raw and beautiful it was. "All the struggles I've been through." It speaks to you and touches you to the core.

Just caught a screening of this masterpiece at the Telluride film festival and was completely blown away. The cinematography, performances from literally everyone, and soundtrack all work together to make this a completely unforgettable film. Waves is easily the best movie I’ve seen this year.

t d I have yet to see Krisha, but I’m a huge fan of it comes at night. The two are very very different as you can imagine, but from a cinematic standpoint, and just overall narrative wise, I would say Waves is a far greater film. I was completely immersed and emotionally invested in the theater more so than anything else I’ve seen in a very long time.

Didn't expect to like the film as much as I did. Looking back, this trailer does a reaaaaally (really!) nice job at hiding certain aspects of the movie, while still emphasizing the main emotional message.
Coming back here to say, this was the best film of 2019. So hard to watch, about Black people and for black people. it lives inside you, I cried 8 times in this movie. this was damn great

This is undoubtably my favorite movie of all time. It captures raw teenage emotion more accurately than any movie I have ever seen. So emotionally potent, and real, yet distorted and beautiful. Every shot of this movie is gorgeous and every sound is breathtaking in a perfectly maximalist way. This style wouldn't work for most films but given the complex tone it somehow pulls it off. An absolute masterpiece in every way. Truly a shame it has not received the credit it deserves.
It’s like the first hour is so intense and then I literally cried 45 minutes straight in the next half. Tragic and beautiful, well done.
I saw this movie at Telluride. I can say with about 99% certainty that I will not see a better movie this year. This movie made its way into my body through my ears and through my eyes, and won't be leaving for a very long time.

I love how the trailer is so emotionally moving and still doesn’t even come CLOSE to preparing you for what a emotional experience this movie is. Without saying ANYTHING about the plot, it’s emotional in an incredibly real and grounded way and you feel like you know these people. I would highly recommend going into this film as blind as possible.

The second half of the movie felt like the life Tyler could have had. Especially with all the parallelism in the scenes with Alexis and Tyler vs Luke and Emily (the many car scenes and the beach/water). And i think when Emily realized that just like Luke's Dad, Tyler had acted out of pain and hurt she was able to forgive him and let go of the hatred she held on to both him and herself for what happened. I think that was what the ending scene was supposed to symbolise with her riding her bike, wind in her hair and arms flailing (the other scenes where she rode her bike feel more mechanical, like she's cycling as hard as she can to get rid of her pain just like Tyler was doing when he would keep pushing himself with the weights). I would have liked to see an extra scene in the end where Emily goes to visit Tyler in prison and the reconciliation between them tho, i think it would have tied the whole movie together. But honestly loved the movie and genuinely think the cinematography was a masterpiece.

I feel emotionally attached to this movie. I related to it in so many ways. It gave me intense anxiety and I haven’t cried this much over a movie in a very long time. I felt for all the characters and saw different perspectives that pulled at my heart. Wow. Such a good movie.
I remember seeing this in a dark empty theatre on a Monday night and being moved to near tears. Some of the best cinematography I think I’ve ever seen. The soundtrack fits the films narrative perfectly. This film was an experience to say the least! Again.. I had 0 expectations 🥺

Had the privilege of watching this at the 2019 Mill Valley Film Festival. This film is a MUST WATCH and I couldn't agree more with the reviews quoted in the trailer. Moreover, the cast and crew I met were just dope people and I loved their energy. Hope WAVES makes it to the Oscars!

Trey Edward Shults modernizes Waves in an unforgettable way, as well as the great performances, the surprises that it gives and will leave more than one fascinated with this guaranteed trip, which will be a satisfying experience.

Do yourself a favor and go watch this film if it’s in your city. This trailer is dripping with beauty but it doesn’t even touch what the entire movie has to offer.

Please keep in mind that of course a film like this is not advocating for/glorifying all of the things you stated, it’s to put a mirror up against what is truly prevalent in our current day society. It’s up to you to draw the pertinent themes in what you see in film, and what this film did was give a voice for so many who may see themselves in what’s presented.

People who don’t like the second half of this film, don’t like this film. It would not be Waves without Emily’s continuation of the story. It’s perfect
is a wonderful, moving film about human emotion waves (literally, waves are key symbols in the film) and how they affect others. I cried a couple of times in it. Is a Florida Home Produced film so I supported it too for that reason as well. A 24 is really good delivering these little gems in a sea of crap in the theaters.
After you watch the movie, the trailer makes more sense. It’s not trying to reveal the plot, it’s trying to make you feel the movies ESSENCE (lol) so that you’ll wanna watch it, and did a good job of that. Watching it now is like a montage of everything that happened, and it’s heartbreaking but also a well executed testament to how we remember but move on and learn to let go and forgive.
i have never been so emotional watching a movie. it was the prolonged scenes of silence which really showed the effect of loss. beautiful movie.

This is one of the greatest trailers I’ve ever seen. Making a trailer is truly an art form. So many goosebumps, so much emotion. And I’ve seen this film 3 or 4 times already. Makes it seem like I’ve never watched it.
A24 dramas always have me bawling my eyes out. Moonlight was so beautiful. The Whale shattered me. And Waves…well I think you know how I felt after this roller coaster.
