It isn't really an Oscar-type of film. It's not a period drama. It's not based on a tragic historical event. The main character doesn't have a physical or mental disability. No extravagant costume design/visual effects. Enjoyable film =/= Oscar-worthy.

Eighth Grade is not competing against animated movies in the animated category. As a non-animated movie, it's competing against period dramas and tragic character films in the Best Picture category, which it why it never had a chance.
they also snubbed elsie fisher. I mean, this is such a honest portrayal of what an adolescent should be, and she did it perfectly. I love that she got nominated for a Golden Globe, but an Oscar (at least a nomination) would fit her just well.

Kids do it all the time, even when teachers tell them not too there’s still kids blocking the entire hallway texting. Also my elementary school had a thing where the shyest kids got awards disguised as citizenship awards to try and help them socialize more. School is weird man

as someone who grew up with crippling social anxiety, this movie made me feel so much less alone. it's so accurate to having anxiety and/or being socially awkward in general. i love this movie so much. bo burnham is an artist.

As someone who has been an 8th grade girl this movie was viscerally uncomfortable in places. It was so accurate to some of the feelings and experiences I had at that age that it was almost painful to watch. The authenticity is incredible.

One of my favorite things about the making of this movie is that Bo made most of the background students actual students from that middle school they filmed at(and some of the teachers too). It definitely helped with the authenticity
Also shes currently 15 so I'm assuming she was 14 when this was filmed putting her around the age that 8th graders actually are (13/14). I thought she was honestly going to be like 17 when I looked her up because they always have older teens playing younger ones and adults playing older teens on TV.

This movie was amazing and painful to sit through at the same time, finally a film about being a teenager going through puberty that feels relatable! I'm in my late 20s but this movie managed to capture this awkward time around 13/14 perfectly, which most teen movies don't accomplish. The plot is nothing crazy which makes it even more realistic. It's really easy to sympathize with Kayla, as almost everyone goes through what she does, more or less! It catapulted me back in time and brought back memories of my own struggles and feelings, when I was that age.

I just watched this film and I thought it was amazing. An actual accurate story about a socially anxious preteen trying to push herself to speak up more. The bond between her and her dad made me cry later in the movie. Highly recommend.

I just finished watching this movie and I loved it! I’m currently about to graduate 8th grade and go to high school so I thought it was about time I watched this. It was so relatable and painfully accurate for the most part and I loved the positive and realistic message in the end despite how dark it was at some parts (which I also loved). I was really scared to be in high school officially, but this is sort of reminder that it’s gonna be ok. ❤️ Bo Burnham really is a genius
This movie actually made me cry so hard. When they got the the car scene I got flash backs to so many awkward moment like that except I couldn’t say no. I never thought something could portray that feeling so perfectly. I was balling my eyes out. This is a must watch.

As soon as I knew Bo Burnham was writing/directing a feature it automatically became my most anticipated film for 2018. The man is a genius. The great reviews from Sundance did not surprise me in the slightest.

I had severe social anxiety around this age and this is the most accurate depiction of it I’ve ever seen in a film. it made me so happy. I’ve never related to a character before, period. characters in movies are all outgoing, loud personalities because that’s what’s interesting. seeing her be a genuinely shy, awkward person who seems to have characteristics of social anxiety meant so so much to me. thank you.

As a 9th grader, I am SO GLAD that an adult-who GETS what it's like to finish middle school in this age-made an amazing movie like this.
The emphasis on the acne the whole movie, like you're seeing it through her eyes because that's actually how the main character feels about her face. No "beauty filter" outside of her phone, just insecurity
The fact that so many teachers try to get hip with the kids and bring up memes that have been dead for a good few years
The behind-the-scenes struggle with emotional pain the girl has to go through, hugging her dad who's always there even if he sorta embarasses her. As someone who's emotionally unstable, I've had times where I just have to hug my mom and cry my heart out
Social anxiety disorder, the fear of being around lots of other people. One of my closest friends has it

@Roxkstargirl Well, from analyzing the movie I've found a lot of things about it I can connect with. It might seem cliche due to the excessive awkwardness and gossip and boys, but remember: those issues are real albeit constantly discussed. The girl in the movie has social anxiety and is pretty upfront about how she truly feels through the way she acts.
the bonfire scene when she’s talking to her dad about how she feels like a burden made me burst into tears..A24 never misses this movie completely encapsulates the experience of being a middle schooler transitioning into high school :’) it made me feel like i teleported back into 8th grade
I don’t know about y’all but this is very reminiscent of my eighth grade experience. I know this definitely isn’t what eighth grade was (or is) like for everyone but that doesn’t mean it’s unrealistic or somehow wrong, it just means it’s different and that’s okay.
I’ve seen people saying that it’s ‘cringey’ but I honestly think it’s meant to come off like that.
Obviously we’ve only seen a trailer but I’m really looking forward to seeing this movie.

wasn't for me, im in 9th grade rn. I didn't really know a lot of the shy kids, but ik they weren't THIS awkward. All the dudes were like 5'8 and over and looked like 10th graders, most of the girls had boobs and everyone was loud.

Mr. Tit yeah I think that was the point of the movie? It was meant to depict life as an average 8th grader and not like what you usually see in films. Of course everyone’s not going to go through the same experiences.
I have never heard of Enya's hit "Sail Away" used more profoundly in my life. It makes me want to watch this movie more.

Bo deserves so much more credit for doing this movie. He didn’t make it unrealistic and he addressed the very real reality of being a teen in this age. He also addressed so many relevant issues. He’s a truly talented person who has stuff to say and we should all listen. Great job!

I am saying this now when i am 23..but when i was actualy in 8th grade, it was mixed feelings.
But now that i am 23 and last year in college, i've experienced worst 4 years of my life too..! and now i know priceless value of school life with zero selfish friends and people.
I just watched it last week for Fathers Day. Such a good movie. I have high functioning autism and it makes me wish my final week of 8th grade was this idealistic.

This came out while I was in eighth grade. I grew up listening to Enya, too. In eighth grade, I was known all over for being severely quiet and shy. I was suffocating because of my extreme depression and anxiety (which I finally found out I needed medication to deal with). Of course, I had no social media and I had no phone until I was 15 when I got a job. I can barely watch this trailer, let alone movie, without crying! My heart is so, so full thanks to this masterpiece!!! 😍
