IU was really really close with SHINee’s late main vocalist Jonghyun, he even wrote a song for her album (Gloomy Clock on her modern times album). It’s bittersweet to see SHINee together with her but without him

IU once called SHINee's Jonghyun one of her best friends, they were extremely close and he composed her song, A Gloomy Clock. Jonghyun passed away in 2017. IU has talked about her late friend several times, paying tribute to him at award shows/her concerts and you recently watched her cover of his song "Before Our Spring" on her Sloppy Live 3 on the anniversary of his death.

SHINee was originally 5 member group but one of them -- Jonghyun passed away, it was suicide due to depression. IU was broken hearted that time. During GDA awards in 2018 her speech she talked about how she had to send off someone precious to her and that artists are people too and should take care of themselves too even though they're supposed to console other people or their fans. IU was very close to Jonghyun, the closest out of all SHINee members she even have a song that Jonghyun gifted to her called A Gloomy Clock. It was also theorized in her song Eight that it was a tribute to Sulli and Jonghyun both IU friends that passed because of suicide. Jonghyun is believed to be the lizard turned to dragon.
SHINee singing Dear Name is specially emotional because you know what the song meant.

The slit on KEY's eyebrow is actually a scar he got when he was younger. After he debuted, he usually conceal the scar but after a while he decided to embrace it and leave it just like that.

SHINee are some of the best vocalists in kpop! Jonghyun actually vocally trained a lot of SM’s vocalists like EXO’s D.O and Baekhyun, and Onew was Taemin’s vocal trainer lol. 😂
Onew can also sing opera as well! The range of this group is widely praised.

So, they debuted in 2008 with the song Replay, which is considered one of the best debut songs in kpop history. They are a contemporary and trend-setting R&B group, and have made several different songs. In fact, their discography is insane, because of the fact that were also an experimental group, they haven opened a lot of doors to try different styles and genres ranging from dubstep, blues to even introduce deep house into the kpop industry. They debuted with five members (Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin respectively) and changed kpop in a very deep way, since they very beginig to now.
Unfortunately, the main vocalist, Kim Jonghyun, who was very close to IU and even composed a song for her, passed away on December 18, 2017, after marking the industry with his talent and leaving his legacy marked in our hearts. After the incident, SHINee chose to continue active with the four members, releasing in 2018, the album called "The Story of Light" that was separated into three EP's, and the very touching song "Our Page", as a tribute that speaks explicitly about the story they created together, and how they would go on with Jonghyun in their hearts and keep writing the pages of their story that doesn't haven't an end yet.
So, after promoting "The Story Of Light", all the oldest members of SHINee ended up having to enter on their military services, leaving Taemin alone and SHINee on hiatus for almost three years. Fortunately, everyone has completed their enlistment and they are now back with the seventh album "Don't Call Me".

I really appreciate Aaron reaction for focusing in every member’s voice, even though he only know taemin. That’s why i am always excited for his reactions.

SHINee is a vocal powerhouse comprising of 5 vocalists (2 being among the best in the industry - Onew and Jonghyun). They are know as the Kings of live performances as they sound so much better live than their CDs and they're one of the very few (if not the only ones) who sang live since debut. Debuting at such tender ages of 14 (Taemin) to 18 (Onew), they have grown so much and have gained the industry's respect as being a legendary and most precious group in the industry/country. Taemin, the youngest of all and definitely the most spoilt was practically raised by his four hyungs (older brothers) from preparing his meals, ironing his school uniforms, walking/escorting him to school and to coaching him vocally (mainly Jonghyun and Onew) since he barely had any lines during their debut years due to his immature vocal chords. The Taemin you see today - one of the best soloist is due to the heavy influence of his members. They doted, loved and spoilt him so much and they mentioned before that Taemin is like a sponge, absorbing all the best qualities of the members. SHINee have gone through so much in the last 14 years - all the success and fame they enjoyed as well as the hardship and having to go through a tragic passing of one of their brothers. Their relationship is so much more than bffs like other groups, but they are each other's families, home, pillar of strength. That is why Taemin mentioned that while his members were doing their mandatory military service for two years he was very lonely and misses them so much. And the moment they came back towards the end of last year, he was over the moon and automatically transformed back into his baby cheese, spoilt brat mode.
SHINee was created as a contemporary RnB group that aims to be the trendsetters in music, dance, fashion etc. So in your SHINee journey, you'll experience a wide range of genres, sounds, mixing, in which may sound weird to some. Regardless, SHINee will always make them work and are always ahead of their time. All five members have very distinct tones and flavours to their voices and together they harmonise heavenly. Jonghyun, the angel is known to be one of the best vocalists in the industry and he is also a well-known and remarkable songwriter, composer, producer, author and radio DJ. He is best friends with IU and also written a song for her. Thank goodness for Onew's resilience after vocal cord surgery in 2014 and working hard to gain his voice back. He dedicated and sang, "Rainy Blue" at the Tokyo Dome for the song's composer, Hideaki Tokunaga who underwent a very similar experience with polyps in his vocal cords and surgery, but didn't regain his singing voice.

SHINee's songs have always been known for 'breaking the mold' and jumping into new concepts that are ahead of their time. That's what made (makes!) them so legendary! Their voices are all individually incredibly unique - Onew for his super unique, mellow ballad-y voice, Key for his incredible power, Minho's beautiful deepness, and Taemin's ethereal voice. Not forgetting Jonghyun - not much needs to be said there. But when put together, their voices are insane and they transform songs. And you can clearly differentiate between who is singing, its just really beautiful.

There's 5 Shinee members and IU is very close to their late member Jonghyun. Shawol always see IU as guest in Jonghyun's radio show and concert so Shawol also thinks fondly of IU.

I am really in awe with their live performances, especially in concerts. The thing I love abt them is that there are 5 Main Vocal, 5 dancers, 5 Visuals, 5 crack heads, 5 talented men, and 5 humble kings. As you discover them, you will be able know what I mean. They are so special. as what they say “SHINee are not only the princes of Kpop but they are also the most precious kpop group in Korea” SHINee is loved by many, not to mention the staffs, co-artists, and general public. They witnessed the growth of shinee. They are also the idol’s idols. They always exceed your expectations and will always think outside the box. Maybe because I stan them so hard.. they became my standard of all kpop groups. and maybe that’s why it is very hard for me to hard stan other groups. Actually IU's version of "Sherlock" is a complete remix of the song and it sounds a lot different than what you just heard. You might even think it's a completely different song when you see the original MV.
What you just experienced is exactly what makes SHINee legends. And this is the reason why they are so highly respected, and why almost everyone in the industry who came after them cites them as one of their biggest influences and one of the reasons why they wanted to become a singer and dancer, etc.
With their "Don't Call Me" comeback, SHINee are just doing what we have all come to expect from them -- showing us something that has never been seen or heard before and starting a new trend. Nothing you hear from them will ever be like anything you have ever seen or heard before. They raise the bar even higher with every comeback. And that's what makes them SHINee. :D With every new song release, SHINee are expected to come out with a style and sound that is brand new, not only for them, but in the industry as a whole.

(Onew means, or sounds like, the Korean words for soft or gentle, so he was given his stage name because he has a very calm and gentle personality.) His vocals are unmatched. He even holds the record (40+ seconds) for the longest continuous note without changing tone or pitch, etc.
Key -- the one with the red shirt -- is our diva and fashionista of the group who is SHINee's stylist for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment, so Key is known for really paying attention to detail when it comes to fashion. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. He is an amazing singer and is a sub-rapper in the group. He is also known as SHINee's dance copy machine. Key has the ability to see and remember choreography the fastest in the group. He only needs to watch the dance once and he has it memorized. He is also SHINee's fluent English speaker, and he is almost as good as a native speaker.
Minho -- the tall one with the brown jacket -- is the main rapper and visual of the group, but, as you heard, his vocals are also some of the best in the industry. Minho sings just as much as he raps. He also writes most of his own raps in SHINee's songs. Minho is a top actor and he has starred in numerous dramas and movies. He is also known as a top athlete. He says these days he goes to the gym a couple of times a day to work out just because he likes to work out, but he is also crazy about soccer, and he plays basketball, baseball and golf, and he is good at track and field events, etc., as well. And not only does he enjoy playing all those sports, but he is usually the best athlete on the field and he pretty much wins every time. Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma," and one reason is for his intense passion for sports and his need to always win.
And, as you know, Taemin is considered one of THE BEST dancers in the industry, and that's not just by fans but by everyone in the industry, including his peers. Taemin's nickname is the Korean Michael Jackson. He is also one of the most popular solo artists in the industry and he is a member of the Kpop supergroup SuperM. Taemin truly is art when it comes to his performances.
Although Jonghyun wasn't in this interview -- Jonghyun died Dec. 18, 2017 -- in order to get to know SHINee, you have to get to know him as well. He is known as one of the best vocalist in Kpop who was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. Jonghyun wrote and composed almost 40% of SHINee's songs, plus he wrote all of his own solo songs and numerous songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy," Taemin's solo songs "Pretty Boy" and "Always", IU's "Gloomy Clock" and Lee HI's "Breath", etc., as well as participated in several movie and drama OSTs. He was one of the only SM artists to be given complete artistic control over his work, including several of SHINee's song selections. SM knew that if Jonghyun was involved in any way that the song would be a hit. He was extremely respected within the industry as a songwriter, composer and singer. He was one of the very first Idols to be known for this songwriting and composing skills. As the main vocalist, Jonghyun is the reason why Taemin is the amazing singer and performer that he is today. SHINee are known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. It's a running joke between the fans and the members that when SHINee lip syncs you can tell because it's very obvious. Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing then they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, SHINee will always sing live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography. SHINee set the standard. That is why they are so highly respected among their peers. It is literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard all other groups strive to reach.
