Yes! But as a human driver I would have pulled in to the median section right in front of the opposing turning lane and leant forward to check from that side instead. That way I would be sure to not miss any traffic coming, but also would have made sure that I had a clear path as soon as a gap emerged. So my 'waiting' position would have been where the car is around 18:10

    • @harsimranbansal5355

@@CBikeLondon but that could be unsafe as there is no left turn lane, both the left turn lane and go straight lane are 1 lane, so by doing this you’d effectively block one of the oncoming lanes.

Not saying it won't get there but any timeline based off this (or probably any California vid, because that's where it's best trained right now) will be over-optimistic. I think when the car is in the intersection and the light turns red, the car should definitely proceed through. Not only is it the legal thing to do, in many cases it's all that can be done. In city traffic especially, the odds that you will have another car behind you, making backing up impossible, is very high. I can't tell how far out in the intersection the car was getting, but it looks like to me, the best improvement would be for it to creep out further, making it very obvious to other drivers that it has to clear the intersection before anyone else can go.

18:00 FSD certainly does see the cars coming up behind the truck and displays them. They seem to disappear in the visualization as they go behind the truck, but I seriously doubt at this late stage of development that it just "forgets" those cars were there and how they were moving. This is exactly the kind of thing it should be able to do with persistent memory and some form of recurrent neural network.
I suspect that the visualization does not show "predicted" objects, but only objects it can directly see, and not even all of those.

I drive in SF every day with beta and pretty much average something like 1 intervention every 3-4 intersections. There are certain intersections where it almost always fails (right on Folsom from 7th, left on 3rd from Folsom, etc.). It’s one of those, it does amazing until it doesn’t. My main issue is that even when it completes the maneuvers, it’s often jerky and can make people in the car nauseous to the point where I don’t even use with others in the vehicle. It does much better in most of the rest of the Bay Area though.

The jerkiness is definitely something that gets overlooked in most videos. I was very surprised when I got the beta on 10.2 and the steering/acceleration in turns was god-awful. Happy to say it improved enormously with 10.3 but I never heard testers mention it in 10.2, and that left me unprepared. I make it a point to give feedback on every turn in my vids now, and list every issue at the end. Also, Cali is as good as it gets.

I drove into SF over the weekend, and I have to say that FSD Beta was incredible. I usually get nervous about city driving because I'm not very experienced at it, but it took all the stress off. It's not anywhere close to full autonomy yet, but as a support system, it's phenomenal.

Great video. Really helpful to see what it’s like in tough traffic. Can’t wait till it comes to the UK

Best beta tester by far, love how you let the car figure things out in it's own time. Keep them coming 👍🏻

  • @christiankohlhaas6273

Wow, the incoming car @8:27, it looks like FSD is anticipating incoming velocity as it doesn't fully stop. That's some amazing driving right there!

As for the red light I feel the car is behaving correctly. The kicker of course in these situations is to still keeping an eye on the crossing lane (supposed to stop at their now red light), as I've now seen a huge number of dashcam videos of people getting T boned by cars running the red.

Thank you for your video and commentary. This version of FSD is incredibly improved compared to earlier versions. Very challenging scenarios, especially for less experienced human drivers.

Great run through the City. During the 'Dead Man's Left' the visualization did see cars in the opposite lane coming up behind the truck so I think AP used that data to predict the car that appeared around the right of the truck and had already slowed for it to let it (the hidden car) come through before finishing the left. Great anticipation maneuver there. I like the fact that the training seems to be focusing on city driving because that is the toughest environment.

Your videos are always a treat. What an incredible drive! Seeing it do this stuff is incredible. Then mine can't even handle going around 1 person ;p
Navigation is definitely a bit faster, which is good. The faster the better. Keep that goin', Tesla!
18:00: I agree with you that FSD was intelligently assessing the situation. It didn't start moving until there was only one oncoming car visible and it had started rolling forward. Super impressed!

Great drive. Video is terrific as is the commentary. Lots of difficult situations that would have left many a human driver pretty stressed out after completing the same drive. I have the FSD production version (not the Beta yet) and my drives on 2 lane country roads are so much more relaxing when FSD is driving. And safer as well. Your comment about the aggressive (likely stressed out) driver passing you at 16:07 is right on the mark. Injecting danger for no real benefit. Once again, great drive. Thanks.

Amazing progress. Thanks for putting so much time into producing your excellent vids (along with helpful commentary 😃). It's really starting to feel like a nervous teenager rather than a clueless five year old! I'm guessing that within six to twelve more months and disengagements will be very few and far between.

  • @anunexpectedfire4062

“So Close, yet so far.” Your thumbnail quote is correct, but that was really impressive. That was a really difficult drive, and the car got most of it right. Still a long way to go, but 10.4 has proven to be really impressive. Thanks for making these videos!

Great videos and excellent commentary. I have the FSD beta on my car as well and last night while I was grieving on the freeway, my car responded to emergency lights on police cars traveling the other way on the freeway. It slowed down and displayed a message saying “slowing for emergency vehicles”. Might be time for you to take a trip to the police station!
