when AKMU revealed the lyrics of this song YG said it was about an adult trying to explain the war to a child.
I think the MV's concept is to reflect in children "playing" how difficult wars are for all people. If you watch the children, they're "doing what they have to do", playing, but none of them laugh or are happy.
They all wear the same uniform, (even the same flag), meaning that no matter who you kill, you are killing someone with whom you should be united.
When the war ends, the girl comes to Suhyun, who gives her the most important thing: a school uniform, explaining that instead of focusing on wars we should focus on education.

This song broke me when I first heard it back in summer... cried my heart out on the chorus, such deeply impactful lyrics. It crushes my soul that the message conveyed is telling the story of the world that we live in. I work with children and I can clearly see how big events impact their precious innocent hearts. I remembered this song again now with the war that started...

얼음들에선 아이의 시선으로 어른들을 노래했는데 전쟁터에선 어른의 시선으로 아이들을 노래하는구나...

"이명이 끝나면 비명이 들릴테니까"라는 구절이 너무 좋아요
자기 내부의 고통이 끝나면 다른 사람의 고통이 느껴진다는 것
내가 전쟁터에서 살아남더라도, 혹은 승리하더라도 남들의 비명이 들리니까요
그럼 이기는 게 중요한 게 아니라 전쟁을 아예 안 하는 게 좋겠죠...

The song is open to interpretation, Chanhyuk added a line about wearing masks so people could relate it to the pandemic experience, if they wish too. Having said so, in my opinion, these are the interpretations that make more sense:
1) It's a song in which the narrator tells war stories to children, like a bed time story, but without romanticising war or making it sound like an heroic epic tale of patriotism and glory, or good versus bad. Instead of that, it's a storytelling that teaches young people the reality of war: that it's painful and ugly, that there are no winners, that the trauma soldiers and civilians experience stays with them until they die, way after the battle is over.
2) It's a song describing the experience children have in war. War told from the perspective of people who are born or raised in countries where violence is prominent. Maybe even minors who enlist and go to war. Explosions, firearms, ashes, wreckage. That's why, there's descriptions of sensory experiences related to the battlefield (seeing your surroundings through the smoke of destroyed buildings, hearing the sound of gunshots and screams, etc). These things don't disapear if they close their eyes and cover their ears for a while, they don't disappear if they go to sleep, the next day the horror is still there. It's not a movie or a playstation game, they can't turn off the TV.
3) It's a song relating how some people are forced to become adults since they are small, due to external circumstances or sociopolitics. Lamenting that some kids don't have the choice to act like kids, reminding people that they should enjoy and treasure their chilhoods, because not everyone has that chance. Don't try to grow too fast.
I guess it could be seen as a commentary against war.

Before the war in Ukraine i just enjoyed this song, but today it got a deeply different meaning for me

I really have a feeling this is the reference to what's happening in the world right now. And how most of the kids are getting effected by it. If you are keeping up with the news around the world you will k ow what I am saying... Proud of AKMU and YG Entertainment for this bold move...

This is a song and mv that everyone should be talking about. Not just because it is well done but because it is a message that we should all heed.
The black and white tone and the child actors gave it a stronger feel. The sound gives me 80s vibes. And their voices were always good to hear.

80년대가 생각나는 레트로와 어릴적듣던 이선희의 목소리 때문인지
저 아이가 내어릴적 같기도 하고 내 아이같기도 하고
지난 40년 나와 우리사회가 걸어온길이 주마등처럼 머리속에서 지나가면서
어디서부터 잘못된것이었을까 하는 생각이 들었음

It's so hard hitting because you have these young and innocent children carrying deadly weapons. It's as though they don't fully understand what they are doing and it's just as though they are playing gun games like more privileged kids do, with the playful blood effects showing how they may not be fully comprehending what is happening. 'when the ringing stops the screaming starts' - the lyric that is along those lines shows how currently they are numb to it but if they grow older they will be full of scars and pain of the war. All the kids stood together and it seemed as though they were playing in their gardens but in reality they were not. I originally thought that the girl at the end was handed another soldier uniform but someone pointed out that it was a school uniform, showing how life will go back to 'normal' after this and how the adults don't want their kids to be in war but it's out of their control and so they try to shelter them from it. It might be shown as a game to us because it's the children's coping mechanism? Or maybe as I said before because they don't really understand it. My heart goes out to the children growing up in war torn countries and their parents of whom don't have the power to protect them.

The song was realesed at the time of el adha eid (this is an eid for muslims) and the moment I listened to the song I started crying as it reminded me how the kids in palestine spent their last eid seing their parents die, their houses being destroted, sleeping with their entire family in a single room so that if their houses got bombed they would die together. It reminded me of kids in Syria in yamen(dying from hunger). I wish I could save these kids

소재도 너무 좋지만 기본적으로 노래가 너무 좋아서 역주행 했으면 합니다...

얼음들, 그때 그 아이들은 곡들과 관점이 이어지는 어른으로 자라나는 '아이들'의 성장에 대한 통찰과 은유를 정말 잘 하는 것 같다. 그래서 악뮤의 노래는 늙지 않나보다. 마지막에서 수현이가 전쟁터에서 다른 아이들을 다 제끼고 전투를 마친 아이에게 다음 단계로 넘어가는 상징인 교복을 주는게, 미래인 수현이가 과거의 자신에게 건네는 것인지, 아니면 수현이도 결국 어른으로 자라버렸고 전쟁터같은 삶을 사는 아이에게 교복으로 상징되는 다음 싸움을 겪게 할 수 밖에 없는건지 궁금해진다.

"hey kid, close your eyes." yes the world's reality is very cruel and different from what you visualize. i hope the next generations will be strong enough to handle the shits and will also be the one to change the mistakes what some 'adults' done.

I think the “close your eyes” part kind of means that there’s nothing you can do about it so brace yourself.
And that part “Because here on the battlefield, once your ears stop ringing, there’s gonna be screaming” just means prepare yourself cause you’re gonna have to go through worse.
The end where the kid is given another uniform I feel like it means you’ve won a battle but not the war. So go fight again.
But I need a real in-depth explanation, this is just what I’m interpreting.

My interpretation: i saw a comment saying that this song is about how dangerously competitive the educational system is (especially in korea). So i rewatched it with this in mind. After the girl survived by shooting down all her competitors, she was given yet another uniform. For me this means that the struggle never ends. Graduating with honors is not the end, it's just another beginning of a gruesome competitive survival experience. And u see how the credits started to roll, to signal a faux ending (bc she supposedly succeeded and all is over) then the cameras rolled again. What faced the girl after she succeeded was the battlefield again. Like after how we graduate, we face the real world where its another battle.

This is the kind of music videos that the kpop is missing nowadays. I'm so sick of cute,pink aesthetics, with explosives kind of music videos. This is such a breath of fresh air and the message is 🙌🙌. As expected from AKMU 👏👏🙌🔥

This is haunting, melancholic, but low-key a bold and strong song. The lyrics by Chanhyuk never disappoint. Gotta love AKMU for their unique concepts and approach.
