In korean words, the pronunciation of 'ice' is similar to 'adult'. So 'why they so cold' = 'why ice is so cold' = 'why adult is so cold'
This music and video satirize the adult's coldness.

As we understand many of you are confused by the new Akdong Musician (AKMU) “MELTED” MV and here at K-POP TIMEOUT, along with the help of various netizens who added in their thoughts in the comments section, we have an explanation for you!
The old man looks back on the days he was young, drinking an icy drink as he is now an icy city man.
His pet lizard was shown to further point out his “cold” personality. (Reptiles are seen as cold-blooded, heartless creatures.)
He remembers how he ran away from home to pursue his dream of photography, innocently taking photos of whatever he found interesting.
However, all the adults did not understand him and were cold to his actions & photo-taking.
During his journey we meet a shopkeeper who judges him for paying with so many cents and buying so little to all these sad and unkind people in the streets around him.
For those wondering why the arguing parents are Asian and Black, I believe because in Korea and other predominantly Asian societies, the two races just don’t really get along (same in predominantly African societies) due to racial prejudices. We see their children don’t understand why they can’t play with each other. Their confusion to why their moms are arguing show how pointless these prejudices are and that we should not be having them anyways.
He finally meets this lady whom he thought was “kind”, allowing him to take photos (although after applying makeup not letting him take more pics of the real crying her) and even gives him a ride.
However, she finds some arm candy in a pub and leaves him there to deal with the bill and an angry bartender who seemed pissed off by his own life.
The boy gets beaten up and in the process his camera (symbol of his innocent dreams) was broken.
He then goes to the police for help but they just ignore him because he seemed unimportant (compared to whatever other cases they were dealing with).
He walks away from the city and comes to the countryside. He sees a dog and wants to befriend it but he barks at him.
We see him shocked, losing any of his lingering hope in care/love in the society as he barks back, transforming into a beast like the dog, pushing those around him away from him…
…until a native american man came out of his trailer (a symbol of people of the past/non city people) and gave him food and drink, even showing appreciation of his photography interests (his dreams).
We finally go back to the boy, now a cold city man but his drink no longer cold - the ice has “melted”; from the warmth he felt from the kind native american man he once met, from the kindness that may still be found in today’s society.
Was this helpful in understanding the MV?

I just realised how witty and deep the lyrics actually are: the pronunciation for Korean words 'Ice' (which is the Korean title of the song) and 'adults' sound pretty similar. The title/lyrics are playing on the words adult and ice. The chorus of the song says "Why is the ice so cold?" which sounds like "why are adults so cold?". Chanhyuk is a great lyricist, he can write fun, witty, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and also emotional, deep lyrics.
    어른들 = eo-reun-deul (Adults)
    얼음들 = eo-reum-deul (Ice/the ice)

The sentence that comes up most in the song is ''Why are they so cold?''. As reading the comments, I see many people hating on the actions of the people that weren't nice to the boy. But have you ever thought why are they so cold to him?
    1) A man is moving - why is he moving? Did he had to quit his job? Did he get divorced? We don't know. He actually offered the boy a ride. But why did he kick the boy out? Because the boy was invading his private space. Many people are closed within themselves, not wanting or scared of opening up to someone. The man might have kicked the boy out because he was scared.
    2) A shop owner - counting his money. It seems like he's worried. He looked hopefully at the boy. A customer, money - he must have thought. But when he saw the amount of money the boy gave him, he looked disappointed. I believe he has trouble keeping his shop alive. Maybe the shop is his life.
    3) A lady crying in the car - did she just break up? Is she lonely? She let's the boy in, to listen to her story. He's a stranger - isn't it a bit naive of her? Later she meets a man and drives away with him. It seemed to me like she met him the first time. Driving away with a stranger - doesn't she seem naive? But why did she let the boy and the man so close to her? Maybe she lacks warmth. Maybe she's scared of being alone. The man payed more attention to her and she left the boy alone. She found affection and forgot about everything and everyone else. Senseless. And dangerous.
    4) The bartender - he dozed of. Was he thinking of something? I don't know. Why did he act aggressively to the boy? Yes, he didn't pay for the order but was that really the reason he acted violently? It might have been the fear of losing his job.
    5) Police officer - why didn't she listen to the boy? She seemed angry. Why was she angry? She has a ring around her finger. Maybe she had a fight with her loved one.
There are other people that appeared in the music video. Why they acted the way they acted, you can think of it yourself. I believe if you give it thought you can find the reason.
People are quick to judge. I believe many of us have had a person in life they thought he/she seemed cold/arrogant/aggressive etc. but when you actually get to talk to the person, get to know him/her better, he/she seemed like a nice person. What if the boy met all the people another day? For example, when something good happened to them that day. Would they act the same way? I believe every one of us isn't every day in the same mood. Not everything can go perfect in life. And sometimes you end up seeming rude, sad or angry at the world. Who are the people that would say you were rude? The ones that don't really know you, aren't they. Would your family, friends, relatives that know you for a long time say the same? They would be worried, wouldn't they? Ask you if everything is all right and other things.
The music video shows what problems can lead to. The people might have not even noticed how they behaved. Maybe they gave it a thought another day - when their mind was clearer. Dark thoughts many times occupy our mind and we don't see the light around us. You can solve every problem and if you need help, you are not alone. I believe that every human is nice. You just have to find a way to his/her heart. We just have to listen to what people say so that we can understand them. Don't judge - understand. By talking, many problems and misunderstandings wouldn't even occur. We just need to listen to what a person has to say and give it a thought.
So why did the boy ''explode'' at the end? Because coldness is contagious. He turned in what he experienced. Angry at the world. But the kind man gave him a little affection, a bit of warmth. Seeing that the boy as a grown up thought about it, it must have changed his life. Just that bit warmth. Which every one of us can give. We just need to see where we can help. Not quickly judge just like the man didn't judge the boy for screaming at the dog. He could have pushed the boy away but he didn't. He listened to the boy. The bit of warmth the man gave the boy, turned the sad face of the boy from all the bad experiences into a smile. And the man was smiling too.
The love of one can vanish the hatred of all.

I always heard this song but never bother to search the meaning. As an adult this is so real. We all once being a kid that full with dream. We want to be this and that but as we're growing older we know that life is not that simple. It such a heart breaking for me when I met again my schoolmates that used dreaming want to be stewardess, lawyer, doctor etc. but now everyone is in different path from their initial dream. Not everyone has opportunity to fulfill their dream. We all have different problems and situation. It so sad that when we look back and realize that how different our life back then when we still don't know how cold adult life is.

You know to me, the major turning point of this MV is around the end when the main actor almost lost his hope to the world when even the dog seems cold to him. Then suddenly, the native guy shows up, giving him some warm drink, food, probably shelter and even fixing the main character's treasured camera, successfully giving him hopes again and melt the almost ice cold heart of the main character. This MV is just too deep and beautiful :')

The first time I listened to this song was when I was 15. I didn't get the music video but loved the mv and song. Now, I am 23 and I sobbed like a baby rewatching the MV. I can't believe how this mv describes why I am always so nostalgic to my teen years. I think this mv truly tells how adulthood is cold and I tend to want going back in time ,15-19, when I was filled with innumerable dreams, ambitions, and life.I still do the things I love but I had to give up also so much of my other dreams forever. I never want to be bitter, cold like the people who were around me. I hope to break this cycle and be more conscious about it. The people we meet don't deserve this type of treatment just cause we lost and gave up on some of our bigger pieces and dreams.

The genius of this is the 'ice' (얼음들) is very similar in pronunciation and spelling to 'adults' (어른들) which shows that adults, just like ice, is cold, namely harsh. That's why the lyrics are talking about how they wish that 'ice' would melt, and why they are so cold.:)

The title is kind of a pun so if you don't know Korean, you wouldn't understand the double meaning behind the lyrics.
'얼음들' or 'ices' in english sounds the same as '어른들' which is 'adults'. The english title of the song is melted, I guess because ices doesn't really make a good title.
the part where it says "why are the ices so cold, if the ices melted, the world would be a warmer place"
actually sounds like this in korean "why are the adults so cold, if they melted the world would be a warmer place"

jbenvenga ofc every language has puns, but they're not the same as in korean language. My mother tongue (not english) has ability to play with the meaning of the words using them kind of in unconventional way and thus making expression very beautiful. Korean doesn't have such wordplay, but they play on pronunciation. In my language we don't have such thing, that's why i find it fascinating :)

I know a couple good Korean Folk singers :) I listen mostly to mainstream Kpop, but lately, I've been trying to get into the Korean Indies bands and folk singers. One awesome Korean folk singer is Roy Kim. I really like his songs Home, Bom Bom Bom, and Love Love Love. I don't know if this band is considered a folk band, they're kinda more like a soft rock band, but they're really good. They're called Busker Busker, and one really great song of their's is called Cherry Blossom Ending. Or at least, I think that was what it's called, it's been a long time since I listened to their music, so I can't remember, sorry 😁 Another great singer is K. Will, though I don't if he's considered a folk singer. All his songs are great. Hope that helped you some, and sorry I couldn't recommend more. Hope you like those ^-^

Here's my theory to this MV. The first guy we see (he's an older guy but they never show his face) is actually remembering himself as a boy. The camera at the end gives it away. He's overlooking from a fancy office building and just looking at how cold everything is. He has the camera with him because it gives him the same hope he had as a boy. So it's a bittersweet ending because we find out the boy won't become homeless and that he has a successful career, but at the same time there's a lot of sadness around his world.

물 만난 물고기라는 책이 나온 이후 이 뮤비를 다시 볼 때면 자꾸만 그 책이 생각난다. 묘하게 맞물려있는 내용이 좋다.

This isn't only a Beautiful song. It is a very beautiful and well thought out video. The message is so beautiful it makes me want to cry.
In the beginning we see this man dressed up in a suit, he is thinking while looking out the window. He is looking back on his life. He is holding a cup of ice which represents cold, and we see a lizard(which are cold blooded creatures). Then we go into the past where we see a young boy who either ran away from home, or is an orphan. He has a dream of being a photographer and innocently takes pictures of everything. Which upsets the man that was giving him a ride. Then he goes to a store and the man behind the counter judges him for paying in coins. The boy then sits on the streets taking pictures of the people around him. All of them seem to be going through some kind of hardship and are not being kind with eachother. Then the boy meets a woman whom he thinks is kind, but when she takes him to the bar she finds someone else and leaves him there with the bill. Then the bartender(who seems to be unhappy with his own life) beats him up for not paying, and breaks his camera in the process (Which symbolizes the boy's dreams/innocence being broken). He goes to the police for help, but the police are too busy with other cases of a larger magnitude; therefore, they ignore him. He then walks away into the countryside with his hopes shattered. Then he runs into this trailer and sees this dog. He smiles at the dog and tries to be friendly with it, but the dog barks violently at him. The boy gets upset and starts to bark back. This represents him giving up on trying to be nice, and realizing that everyone around him is cruel and cold blooded; As a result, he was becoming cold blooded too. But then he meets the dog's owner, a Native American that welcomes him with a warm smile. The man feeds him and even helps him fix his camera ( helps him restore his dreams). Then we go back to the man in the suit who is still looking out the window. The ice in his cup had MELTED. Which represents that one simple act of kindness from that one person changed the way he felt towards humanity. He was not a cold blooded man anymore.
The overall lesson in this video is that even though we all may have bad days and may not be in the greatest moods. We should always be kind to others. You never know what the person next to you might be going through, it could be 20 times worse than what you are going through. Helping others is not that hard, and sometimes a simple act of kindness could be a great impact in someone else's life.

Omg this was so perfect, did you analyse all this by yourself? Even i was too caught up in the sadness and the realness of the song and content that i couldn't put and point out every little detail, this is a so nice! Loved this music video and song. Definitely points out the real harsh reality of this so called perfect world. Love it!

My bestfriend and I loved this song. And we know that YG always puts A LOT of symbolism in their MVs. So we sat here for about an hour scratching our heads trying to figure out what it meant. We also did some research too. We have too much time in our hands lol. But I am glad you appreciate our analysis :)

In my English class in college we have to choose a video to a visual analysis on and I choose this because of the true meaning of what our world is going through. This video was the first thing that pop up in me head and I'm very excited to type about it (and I never been excited for typing papers lol)
