Iโ€™m glad you noticed Stoicoโ€™s reaction after he said that Hiccup was not his son. Itโ€™s such a subtle scene that not many reactors pick on, the fact that he steps back as heโ€™s leaving, almost as he was affected by the weight of his own words, you can see very clearly the pain on his face. What Stoick said was one of the worst things he could have said to Hiccup. They take great pride in their heritage. Many Scandinavian surnames are along the lines of Anderson, or Ericson. Which, literally, means son of Ander or Eric. To say Hiccup was not his son was to deny him the right to claim his lineage. He would be the lowest status person in his village, and by their beliefs, when he dies and if he goes to Valhalla, he cannot sit at the table of his ancestors. It's really just about the worst curse. Plus it means that Stoick's bloodline ends with him, unless he has, or adopts another child. So it is, entirely, fitting for Stoick to be shook by what he said.
And yes, it is nice to see people recognize his reaction, instead of just lambasting him for it.
Edit. As an aside, the part where they convert Astrid with the flight is more impactful than it appears. If you think about the time, flying would have been inconceivable to them. The highest anyone, probably, ever got off the ground would be to climb a tree. To be high enough to touch and get lost in the clouds, and look DOWN on a mountain, would be a view of the world from the perspective of the Gods. It would have been a, literally, life changing experience for her.

  • @jlerrickson

To be a little fair to Stoic, his fear for Hiccup was never that he wouldn't be a dragon killing warrior: it was that he would get himself or someone else killed trying to prove that he's something he isn't. If you listen to Stoic's conversation with Gobber, he says it pretty clearly: Hiccup doesn't know who he is or how to be it, Stoic doesn't know how to help him, and he's afraid he can't protect him. Does that excuse his behavior? Nope. But it does help one understand him better.

Toothless knew Hiccup was okay the whole time, but when Stoic gets close, instead of uncovering Hiccup right then, he looks at Stoic, waits for the apology and THEN unfurls his wings to show everyone that Hiccup is safe. Like he was fully okay with letting Stoic think his son was dead if he didn't show how truly sorry he was to toothless himself, because saying it to Hiccup wasn't enough for him, he had to hear it too and it had to be sincere.

Some facts about this franchise in case your interested:
10:42 This "old woman" is Gothi, she is the oldest viking in the village and acts as the village's doctor when they are sick. I don't think I've ever heard her talk before throughout the series before either.
Toothless was based on a lot of animals but took a lot of inspiration from cats as you thought.
The dragons hate eels because they cause them to hallucinate once eaten and can't control their fire blast.
15:24 This grass is called Dragon Nip in their universe and is the equivalent to Cat Nip
On the original book Toothless was actually the size of the Terrible Terror (tiny dragon) but they changed it in the movie.
16:44 The amount of people that left is the same amount of people that returned, just less ships.
29:04 The strap that's across Toothless' head keeps his mouth closed enough to not allow him to shoot his fire.
The big dragon at the end of the movie is called the Red Death, she is evil. The Red Death makes the other dragons give her food and if they don't, she kills and eats them.
When Toothless dives from a high point and makes that whining-like noise, he is flying at the speed of sound. So when he fires one of his shots at this speed it also creates more force to the blast that caused the Red Death to end up falling over.
    Sorry this was long.

Let's face it, Astrid is extremely competitive and if Hiccup hadn't changed his methods Astrid probably would have won and she probably knew that too. She's not much of a gloater or has any ego but compared to everyone else it's not that hard to put together that she probably would have won. To see that opportunity get taken away from her suddenly in a way she couldn't figure out probably is what got her so mad. Once she understood she was all good and completely supported Hiccup. (They cannonically have their own language) like the vikings they are also stuck in their ways of killing humans and their instincts. Toothless forgetting those aspects is another reason why his domesticated friendship with Hiccup is so admirable.
    Dragon facts:
Also, all dragons do have hidden gills that allow them to breathe underwater a bit longer than humans, which is why toothless was able to stay down there for so long.
While Cannabilism isn't common for most species, it does happen with mainly sea dragons, which are ussually the largest dragon species, as well as most pack dragons who ussually end up eating some of their siblings once they are born.

You're spot on about Toothless being like a cat. The writers for this film got inspiration from their pets for the dragon behavior. And I can tell you from experience that black cats are super affectionate, which is a real shame since they get such a bad reputation. I fostered one a few years ago and he was the snuggliest creature I've ever encountered but it didn't work out because my two other cats didn't get along. Then we got an orange cat, and she's super cuddly too. The halloween cats really deserve more love.

The story has HEART!!! a lot of animated films fall flat. Because they have edited out everything important to character building. This one saved every moment that you noticed (get it Hollywood? We the audience NOTICE those moments). The film has HEART!!!

Also, I don't say this often, but the next one in the series is, in my opinion, even better. But also emotional roller-coaster.

I am so glad you noticed Stoick staggering back after the "you're not my son" line.
It is such an important detail and perfectly informs his decisions in the third act when he comes around as well.
Alot of reactors don't seem to notice that moment so it was a relief to see you notice.

I mean to give stoick some credit the second film expands on why he was so set in his ways and hates the dragons so much. The first film just kinda leaves all of that info out other than one small mention of the event in passing.
After watching the second film youโ€™ll not only understand but it will also make Stoick one of your favorite characters in the franchise.
Also this franchise one of the few success story where a studio adapted a book and makes it end better than the source material. The books series isnโ€™t bad but where they are kids books they get really convoluted and goofy quick.
The also only used the base set up of the books as inspiration because the bookโ€™s story and the filmโ€™s stories are night and day. In the books the people of Berk were already dragon riders and as a right of passage one would have to sneak into a dragons nest and take an egg to train. Toothless was changed greatly as well, in the books there was nothing special about him he was a runt of the most common type of dragon, he is able to โ€œtalkโ€ in the books as well. Because hiccup loves to study dragons he learned how to speak their language.
