Trying underpainting a la Hailey Bieber
μμ€ μ½λ
- κ²μμΌ 2023. 02. 23.
- Sup peeps. Today I'm trying out Mary Phillip's 'underpainting' technique for a flawless base. If you're not familiar, Mary is responsible for those gorgeously natural looking makeup looks on people like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. This definitely something everyone should try at least once! ππ»

OK I don't know how to explain this but your under eye circles are so beautiful they look like a natural make up that blends so well with the rest of your skin texture and u genuinely look so pretty
People with a natural darkness around their eyes are so lucky
Thatβs how Patrick Starrr introduced his blush trio palettes. The cream goes under your foundation. Scott Barnes taught Tati this technique, and Jennifer Lopez, his most famous client, did this in her Vogue (I think) video. This has been around forever, Mary just made it popular.
And drag!!! Donβt forget the drag!!!!!!!!!
@@renegoss4650 yes it's a drag term
Just what I needed.
Having an anxiety attack and in need of a good distraction. Thanks Alex! I love you π
π Here for you love β€οΈ
@@AlexandraAnele you are. You have no idea.
Sending love from a fellow anxiety haver. You got this β€οΈβ€οΈ
@@gorlgoyle thank you βΊοΈ
yes maβamβ¦ i know you posted this a while ago, but sending love as well. i also use alexβs vids to help with anxiety, especially before i try and sleep. which you know, isnβt fun β€
Nina Uhbi always underpaints. She uses cream contour and blushes under the foundation and powder contour and blushes over the foundation. It looks really good. I canβt wait to see yours because I know it will look beautiful!
This is a very very pretty look. The minimal coverage and tone, the perfect pink lip and cheek to complement your natural lid color. Topped off with bare eyelashes-which is a personal favorite that brings so much youth to everyoneβs face.
I love this look for you, me, and really every woman.
I don't know why, but I live to just listen to these videos. I don't even wear makeup, I don't even watch the video, but the audio captivates me.
So grateful for your uploads... here at lunch, trying to relax at work and there you are! Thanks for being REAL.
loved this look! Tbh I would watch an updated version as well now that you've tried few times more and can give more advice on the products that would work the best! I feel like I've always thought that a skin tint would be better but then I have acne and acne marks so I haven't tried this technique yet because i don't want to feel sad if I can't achieve the clean/flawless skin look that is the point of the makeup sob
Youβre stunning! Always enjoy your videos β₯οΈ
Your skin is and looks amazing. This foundation looks flawless on you π€
I LOVE your voiceovers. I think youβre among the three most authentic, relatable and hilarious KRplusrs that I know and itβs a joy to listen and watch!! Greetings from π¦πΉ Austria
I like the voice over for this kind of video. You are so supportive and encouraging! I love this look on you.
tried this technique out a couple weeks ago and I love it! It takes me out of being bored of doing the same makeup routine, and I love the natural look of it
Your skin looks so good. Whatever routing your doing is working so good. I have never tried underpainting but this tutorial is tempting me. Your a great teacher, thanks for this one Alex π
Iβve got to try this! Best explanation Iβve seen.
I am amazed by the perfection of your brows in every video. It never gets old.
You are just naturally pretty every look looks amazing on you u can do no wrong
I love this technique, and I have been doing it for years. It looks so natural and I love how you don't get the harsh lines from the other products.
I would love to see a video where you do your best makeup for flawless skin and then showing it under different lights and with close ups
Gosh you are just so naturally freaking beautiful.
Honestly loved this way more than I thought. I donβt usually choose a natural look over something thatβs not but this looks incredible!!
Iβm obsessed with your earrings β€
You are stunning girl! β€
Alexandra you look fabulous!!
I love this look on you. Gives you a very beautiful glow. β€
This might be a long shot, but youβre my favorite makeup artist and I was wondering if you could do a video of alternative bridal makeup. Like, Euphoria inspired looks for the unconventional bride?
Tysm for this honest review loved it . π
You have such a soothing voice. And this video is pretty mesmerizing. Nice.
Stunning!
Alex I love you so much!!!when I am watching your videos and you are speaking live is my best π
Gorgeous as usualπ
Thanks for sharing. Your videos are always 10 out of 10
Just an FYI- Morphes new vegan line has a sponge that is the same shape as the Elcie cosmetics one and itβs half the price
Woman!!! You have skillzzzzz. I need to know how to do my make up like that. You are my favorite MUA...You need to teach a master class.
This has nothing to do with the video but I keep meaning to comment and say that I used to watch makeup videos ALL the time and then I sort of just stopped watching, except for one or two creators (basically you and rawbeautykristi) and I think the reason Iβve stuck with you is because of how real and authentic and chill you are and how your tutorials are ACTUALLY helpful. You have taught me so much about actually helpful and useful makeup techniques that Iβve continued to use. Whenever I feel like Iβm in a rut with my makeup I know I can watch one of your videos for inspiration and great tips. Just sayinβ youβre legit and I love your channel π
I think I love your full glam much more than everyday looks. You have an amazing ability to make super glam full face of makeup look natural π€. Which is not the case with many many so called famous influencers playing with heavy glam and outrageous eyeshadows π€. Xx from Australia
Looooove this. I donβt have any cream bronzer but imma get some and try this.
Girl that skin THOUGH! FIRE
Beautiful!!

I so appreciate that you brought up that this isnβt new.
I love all your videos Alex
Ok, but I loved this before you even used the foundation! Would love to see this finished without any foundation?? β€οΈβ€οΈ beautiful
Very beautiful look
Gorgeous
Havenβt tried it this way but I like putting my highlight under my blush!
Iβve heard that Mary Philips uses the La Mer powder brush to blend the Foundation in. I own the exact same brush, so I gave it a try: my base has never looked betterπ₯°
The Kim Chi Chic loose powder is great for blurring pores, highly recommend.
You look beautiful!!
Love this tutorial :)
Beautiful π
This is stunning!
Also, so therapeutic to watch. Thank you π
I tried it along with u. It looks pretty good
Here for the updated brow routine. πββοΈ
The skin is skinnnnning!!!!!
Perfect.
loved the video! i'm curious to know if you ever used a darker shade of your regular foundation to do your contour, i think it may be a good option in terms of blending
That charlotte tilbury power made your pores vanish. I have to have this powder now. The final look was gorgeous.
I have been so afraid of using setting powder! The halo powder looks so natural on you and not powdery at all. Danke for the videos!
Iβm thinking itβs time for me to try this Elf halo glow! Just turned 30 last month and Iβm starting to struggle with creasing as well. Ugh the struggle
Love and appreciate you! β€
Ill be 35 in october, i feel u. The last 3 years have been a struggle. Try the maybelline fot me concealer snd foundation, best frugstore ive found for creasing. Elf makes a "HD Setting Powder" thst wirks pretty well under the eyes.
Honestly, and maybe it looked different in person, but after the powder...pores who? It looked flawless. Thank you for this tutorial, can't wait to try!
Love that Auric lip stuff (although I think I bought it because of rec from you). +1 to that Milk primer too. I can't make hydrogrip work for me either. I'm struggling with a CT powder, but I will put that one on my list to try!
But you know whose product card never declines for me? Danessa Myricks. Very interested in that blush.
I love how beautiful and glowy your base is. β€
I have not tried it but gonna now thanks ππ»βπ»
Thank you for the content
STUNNING as usual! two randoooo questions for you:
-How does the CT brightening powder wear compared to the mineral based loose laura mercier powder? i always look cakey-est under my eyes where I typically use that
-Is the Mac primer more moisturizer-like? how does it wear? Ive been using the smashbox photo finish and i'm just not crazy about how the makeup looks on top ad don't really like the matte feel
Passport makeup please! Your tips are the best. Thanks!β€β€
Hi Alexandra, i would love to know the brushes you use, please please do a video about that. β€οΈlove your videoβs.
Alex yur very BEAUTIFULπ and amazing at makeup
Cool videoβ¦first time watching your channelβ¦pretty awesome to watch and listen to a someone do makeup who isnβt irritating β¦idk what it is exactly it is but itβs like ur funny, obviously super βcoolβ, easy to listen to, love the dry humor, and (random comparison alert) you remind me of Nicole Richie (probably not spelling that right), and most importantlyβ¦youβre really good at makeupβ¦.what else could a girl (whoβs supposed to be writing a research paper but instead is pretending to have tons of free time to watch YT videos) ask for?! I canβt think of a single thing! New sub! β€
ππ Thank you so much! I definitely used to get βNicole Richieβ all the time but I havenβt in awhile! Glad youβre here love, now go get back to that paper! ππΌπ§‘
Just recently experimenting with this technique and this video is the best! π Could you list the brushes you used? They all worked out so well!
Try the SheGlam Face & Undereye Setting Powder! I would love to see you do a review/tutorial with it! I just got it and I love it & I think youβd love it! Itβs cheap & itβs finely milled! πππ
Have you tried the P. Louise liquid blushes? They are next level and I really want to see you try a few.
Recommendation: RMS Beauty Primer is gorgeous and even a little firming.
Scott Barnes does this. Love it but I'm scared to try it. π
Woah Iβve never gotten to one this early π love you!
Ayyy ππ»β€οΈ
@@AlexandraAnele my life has been fulfilled π₯²βΊοΈ
I know nothing about nothing but I've been doing this recently. I have mature skin (56) and I use a lighter hand these days. I do creamblush and Fenti matchstick contour under my Essence powder foundation.
Cutest face shape ever
Supposedly βunder paintingβ was coined by Kevin Aucoin decades ago but I suspect it was a drag term π€
This is my first step to my "no-makeup makeup" look except I use a tinted moisturizer instead of a foundation (and I do the underpainting a lil lighter). It looks really natural and also doesn't cover up my freckles so much. I also use a liquid blush and highlight underneath the tinted moisturizer. I spot conceal over the tinted moisturizer using an angled eyeliner brush (the tiny one) to make X and + motions while holding near the end of the brush and tapping any excess in. Note: you gotta be ok with your blemishes show through a bit to use that technique for concealer. It mutes any irritation but it won't be 100% covered. My inner corner gets dark, so I use a similar technique but with a bigger brush. The only powder I use is a translucent powder and I mostly focus that on my nose (and MAYBE cheeks).
Can you give advice of how to find the best shade colour for the dark concealer/contouring colour, please?
My problem is that everything looks muddy, browny, overly warm on my pale neautral skintone.
Only make up influence I watch now π
Can you do a video on powder foundations, please?
Come on....WOW. Well done. Lovely.
Love the sneeze π
Thank you
i like to watch these kinds of videos while imagining im reading your mind
Beautiful! CT product contain a lot of talc I recentely saw a video on this. I believe in many products itβs their main ingredientβ¦π’
Hiya Alex. Love you and all your videos. Quick question: have you reviewed or use any of Jones Road (Bobbie Brown's no makeup makeup line) products? Specifically the WTFoundation and Miracle Balm? If not, can you? π LOL
What brush are you using for the concealer? I need it π
Came out beautiful but I honestly think your makeup always looks beautiful no matter the technique! I think the key which you have is being precise and good blending. To me this technique helps actual contour NOT bronzer look more natural but I think bronzer should go on top because it is supposed to warm up the skin not really create dimension such as contour. Idk thatβs just my opinion.
Scott Barnes taught me about under painting, but Maryβs version is def a lil different. I prefer Maryβs version
i'm pretty sure that it was scott barns that "invented" the underpainting. tati westbrock has a great video where scott himself does it on her, if anyone is interested
Could you tell me what kind of earrings you are wearing in the video? What brand is it? Great content!
Underpainting is also just an actual painting thing so that's always been the source in my head
It's genuinely so cool and smart to me
is this a lip gua sha or what's happening at :25? love it
