- Here's everything I've been avoiding talking about regarding Smosh's parent company, Defy Media.
Everyone I used to work with at Smosh are incredibly talented and sweet people. They didn't deserve to be treated like this.

I think it has its ups and downs. Companies can also do good things, like promote channels and fund them. Its when something like this happens, through the corrupted companies that dont value their employees whatsoever, that the bullshit of it comes down hard and heavy.
I could rant about this for hours. I’ve been on KRplus since the late 2000s and I hate what it’s become.
Of coarse KRplus would be recommending this as soon as Ian and Anthony buy Smosh back

I'll be honest. I've heard about this Defy stuff for about a year now, but I didn't take the time to actually look up what happened until after Anthony and Ian bought Smosh back lol
I really miss KRplus’s old slogan, broadcast yourself. Cause that’s what it USED to be, anyone could do it. Now it’s all about fancy editing, productions and shit. Take me back to 2007 man :(

Regardless if you like old or new Smosh. This honestly stings. That they chose to screw over a business that was essentially one of the first fews to do so and just threw it out the window.
Smosh whether you like it or not was a pioneer in KRplus being a stable living and Defy threw it out like a piece of stock that lost value.

Don't beat yourself up for selling SMOSH to them. You were young and didn't know and they took advantage of that. But you speaking about the hard lesson you learned will hopefully save others from shady companies like that one. 💖

This is a lesson to young people who have something valuable. Whether it be your body(athlete, model), something you invented, a KRplus channel, or whatever else. There are going to be people who are older who see you as nothing more than a bunch of dollar signs. And they will do whatever it takes to make as much money off of you as they can. They will not be looking out for your interests at all, they will only care about how much money you make them. So if you have something valuable, get legitimate representation and know what you have and it’s worth.

I used to watch with my sister and it was the only thing that made me happy and it was the only thing we bonded with. Now it is gone and I am so sad😭😢
I loved smosh when it was just Anthony and Ian but adding the new people wasn't bad but it wasn't the best I think they could have been more side characters if u do deside to make smosh 2 or what ever u want to call it

Reunite with Ian and collect your friends who were fired and ask them to work with you guys. Be a team and you two be in charge, maybe hire a manager but don’t let anyone “own” you all. You guys can go far together, and bring everything back better than ever before... good luck!!!

Can't rejoin smosh, it's still owned by someone and it will probably be liquidated to pay back DeFy's debt. Hopefully, this is a learning opportunity for everyone watching this unfold and they realize that when you sell a business you ALWAYS get a lawyer to look it over. I have a saying, no one likes lawyers, doctors, police, or dentists until they need one.

I like how everyone says "the new actors" when they have been there for 4 years. its just my opinion but they aren't bad, they actually add to the videos and gives more creativity/diversity. It wasn't their fault Anthony left, it was DEFY. If you watched the recent podcast with Ian, courtney and Shayne, they said how much that they didnt like defy but couldnt get out of it. Also they said they were very welcome to having Anthony come back and make videos with them if he wanted to but they understand he is doing his own thing.
I want him to rejoin, but he probably won't and i can see why he wouldn't.

It turns out the company embezzled 1.7 million dollars from 50 creators on the platform. Although this is an inaccurate representation, 1,700,000 divided by 50 is a total 0f $34,000. That is more than the average annual income of most US citizens. In my home state (Arizona: the second lowest paying state to educators) teachers earn an average of $45,000. If the 34 grand was taken from a someone like a teacher, that would put them well below the poverty line.
I fucking hate how companies can lose side of what they what they were originally made to represent. Although I wasn't affected by the incident, it is still painful to see people like Ian and Anthony, have their life work ripped apart by large companies to make a quick buck. And not just the larger creators, but the small ones as well. The channels that don't earn a million a year (or more) have been totally devastated by the whole defy media bullshit. For some, that is the equivalent to an entire year worth of what would be profit completely down the drain.
Another reason that this is such a big deal is because some creators won't even get back the money they lost. After the company went out, the remaining money that Defy Media went straight to Ally Bank. Ally will pay back the larger channels first, as they hold more power, and whatever remains (or what may not remain) will be returned.
This as by far the longest comment I've ever written, and most people who see this won't even finish this. But if you have gotten this far, spread the word. And... feel free to leave a like.

I stopped watching Smosh since I realized that the channel took a different path without you and without Ian, I know for sure that the "real smosh" left a LOT of great memories! I wish you can start all over.

honestly the chances of that are slim. only reason being is because of all the cast that have showed up in the past few years. These people were in Smosh for YEARS at this point and they would obviously feel betrayed if they were essentially fired by Ian after being cast members and friends in years. If Anthony and Ian were to take Smosh into their own hands and make it completely about them all over again, everyone else who has worked for Smosh would stabbed in the back and it wouldn't go well.

I really respect you for speaking out and providing examples of what they have done. Too often, big media companies sweep issues like these under the rug.
Defy Media sounds like it was really predatory, taking advantage of smaller growing companies.
@S. I. V. this video may not tangibly do anything, but it's informing the public and that in itself is more than what existed before he posted it.
@S. I. V. We are still the public. This isn't saying the world saw it. Did I say this changed the landscape of media? No. But what I am saying is that if more people were inclined to speak out when things like this happened and it became *common practice*, companies wouldn't get away with as much as they do now. So I applaud Anthony for speaking out when it's not something most people are comfortable doing.
Talking about it now is not very brave and it's too late. It just shows that Anthony leaved to save his ass. He shouldn't even be shocked about this decision considering all the bad stuff they did.
This company tied their employees to legal binding agreements that didn't allow them to speak out. Now that their contracts are terminated, ex employees are speaking out.
99% of the time "market conditions" means an internal fallout. Someone didn't like the future of the company or where it was going and decided to rip it up, or publicize underhanded dealings, so others in order to save face probably dumped cash, and liquidated.
This is literally what I've been telling people ,from their standpoint it's the best thing to do (._. but idk i just study finance for businesses so maybe that's why I'm the minority that's not blaming the company itself (._. Shit happens 🤷 This isn't the first business to do so 🤷

Oh my gosh I can see why you left, Anthony. It must of been so painful to see this big corp. suck the soul out of smosh. I honestly have no idea how Ian was able to stay for so many years, he must of gone through a lot of heartache. It’s kinda messed up a company could just do that and it’s “whatever”. Anthony, I am so sorry this is happening right now, even if you’re not a part of that team anymore. You did, however, build Smosh from the ground up alongside with Ian and for Defy Media to completely dismiss and disrespect all of you is outright petty. I’ve been part of the Smosh family since I was little and when you announced you were leaving I completely understood why and in a way I left with you. I wonder how Smosh would’ve been today if you and Ian still had the most control over it and I do understand completely that being presented with this deal back in 2011 must have been a relief so please do not beat yourself up about that; you did what you had to do to support your brand. Right now I just hope Smosh finds a new home that can provide the creative freedom that Defy Media never did for you. Cheer up, man. Better days will come. We love you.

Smosh isn't closing down, just Defy. Ian tweeted that they're looking for a new home. It doesn't change the fact that Defy truly did ruin Smosh. The quality went to shit, bringing in a whole new crew was a disaster and, clearly, this company was trash. Anthony was right to leave and it's a shame Ian hasn't done the same.

I know, I still remember the day that I found smosh in 2nd grade. Prob one of the most important days of my early childhood.
The thing I love about Anthony is that he really does care about Smosh, even after he left. Anthony created Smosh, I admire that he shares his feelings with us. Thank you for doing this video Anthony -Padildo- Padilla, you have come so far since 2005 and we are all proud of what you, Ian and the whole Smosh company have accomplished in this amazing 13 years on KRplus.
I grew up watching Smosh, me and my older brother would sing to the Assassins Creed song and I don’t know any different. You helped make my childhood a great one. And for that, I can’t thank you all enough.

For the most part, I don't think companies can run a KRplus channel; The best channels have personality. Companies don't have anything close to that.
T-Series is the only company in youtube that is almost close to be successful but yeah you have a point.

Depends. The Fine Brothers really managed to flourish their channel and become an actual media company straight out of KRplus. They still are hands-on but are bosses of their own brand. From doing reaction videos, they're now pitching ideas for television and other media platforms and have recently produced a movie.

I am 22 and actually crying right now... Smosh was one of the greatest times of my childhood... I just can't believe this I just found out about this now after forgetting about Smosh for many years.
If a GoFundMe or KickStarter was made to get you and Ian back together; even under a different name it does not have to be the name Smosh. We just want the old videos back again...
There are so many people out there that would be willing to help. All you have to do is ask... I can probably vouch for most Smosh fans by saying this; you do deserve full and complete creative freedom again. How much money would we need to raise in order to bring the real Smosh back... I will personally make weekly payments to the fundraising.
I would personally donate $1,000... its still a lot but not a lot at the same time... at least it's something... I would assume hundreds of thousands of others will do the same and at least donate $1...
Maybe in the future we can have the infamous duo back together again... I miss the old days so much I am actually tearing up typing this... I just recently found out about the separation of Smosh and what it became. I completely forgot about Smosh until today when I just randomly started thinking about it. When I looked it up I was very disappointed to see what became... That is why I wanted to find out what happened; here I am...
How much do we need to raise we will achieve the goal I will personally donate even more to further help out if needed. I got lucky with cryptocurrency when I bought in 2019 and then sold at the 2021 highs... I will donate more than $1,000 if it means I can see my favorite creator have fun again with his friend doing what they love... This breaks my heart... Let's create a new company under a different name than Smosh and bring back the good that KRplus used to be. I want to be able to show my kids Smosh... Please respond to this Anthony.
