For all those saying itโs a โwaste of resourcesโ to keep inmates in prison for life, you may be surprised to learn itโs actually MORE expensive to put a prisoner to death.
Well thats... interesting
I will search this on my own when I have time, but it would be helpfull if you or anyone shared more about this especifically
@@ericf.a8623 source (criminal justice Degree Hub )
โWhat actually ends up costing so much is the actual prosecution and defense of death row inmates over the course of their time in prison and on death row. Trials involving inmates that have been sentenced to the death penalty require very experienced and often expensive lawyers. Additionally, DNA testing is frequently used and is also very costly.โ
@@ericf.a8623 The euthanasia is wildly expensive. There are many scholarly articles out there on the topic it wonโt be hard to find. I wrote a thesis paper on the topic and was shocked by my findings.
@@morgankneip4890 ok, thanks
Yup! You have to exhaust your appeals. A group of parents of the Boston Marathon bombing victims didnโt want prosecutors to seek the death penalty as you legally have to use all your appeals, and that would put everything back into the media each time, and give the guy that killed their family members even more of the notoriety he wanted.

I heard of a story of an 11 year old boy that went to jail for 7 years because, without good evidence, because his stepmother was murdered. He was released at the age of 18, found not guilty. He lost all of his childhood and didnโt get an education because the people on his case didnโt look for more evidence. They havenโt found the murderer.

Kia kaha I hope you find peace.
The "justice" system genuinely doesn't give a fuck about you. Or anyone for a matter. They'll only do something once the worst case scenario has occurred.

I can't believe how strong sunny is. She gets sentenced to the death penalty for something she didn't do while trying to protect her kids, Gets thrown in solitary confinement for 5 years with no contact to the out side world, when she finally gets to be in the "normal jail" and she can talk to her kids and her parents come down to see her, they die in the plane crash then her husband gets a gruesome painful death. also law books. like are they TRYING to get sued?? If even one person gets set free, everyone involved is a target for revenge. Also the people who really messed up could be put in prison. p.s those people should get life in prison.
Maybe they are hoping for them to change? Sometimes only faith can change people.
I'm a Christian and I by no means support the death penalty, regardless of if they have actually did it or not. That's just a reasoning I can come up with for giving them Bibles. Well thatโs Ireland
@@frostyading2218 I don't have faith in people when they don't look at the evidence the right way by court and actually show that it is that person. I have more faith in other things. Like for example "we will be safe from Covid at a point in time" cause it has happen before. "We will move on and have a better day". So to be honest yes I have faith but when it is about people who have been in jail for something they didn't commit and they just want to throw someone in jail for assumption of crime without looking at all evidence...this is where people wouldn't have faith and they will know the pain of suffering for no reason by false conviction. That is also where I believe you wouldn't have faith either cause most times when people are in somewhere like that they have no faith...just hoping for them to see the evidence on a broader scale and to let them go and see their family and friends. Why should we put faith in something that puts criminals in jail but also put falsely accused people in jail?

death row is such an interesting thing because i (personally) think that there are crimes so heinous that thatโs the only sentence that would even be close to fair for the perpetrator, but i also know - without a shadow of a doubt - that thereโs almost no way for it to be used correctly with how corrupt the justice system is and how easily it is to convict anyone with basically no irrefutable evidence that said person actually committed the crime theyre being accused of.
I feel the same way about the death penalty. There are some truly horrible people out there where only death could rectify the horrors they committed. But at the same time the system is obviously imperfect so you can't trust that innocent people won't be convicted for something they didn't do.
That's why I can't support the death penalty knowing that there is a possibility, however slim, that someone innocent will be wrongfully convicted.
In more just world where one could trust the judicial system fully to convict the correct people I would support it.
@@lilium9361 exactly. in theory the death penalty could save a lot of trouble for a lot of reasons but until the system is completely without flaw theres no way i could actually support it. too many people have lost their lives over a crime they never committed and never get justice for it
I feel there won't ever be justice. If a life is cut short that's an act of injustice and no matter what happens next that justice won't ever come. I don't believe even killing someone who killed someone you love with your own hands would bring justice to the world because the injustice is already done.
I do understand your point of view. I truly do. But the death penalty isn't just giving a punition to someone it's making others know that this is possible so they won't do the same. Putting judges and people in the hand of a power that they can't control, fear. Justice is here to put not a punition but a correction. Killing someone doesn't correct them, on the contrary, it doesn't let them be corrected.
It's a question that has been raised by so many people and authors like Victor Hugo. That's why it isn't something that can be thought only in the penalty district. It's a power, a media, an economic, a morale district question
@@AndysamBlack i personally dont agree with this. serial killers exist. serial rapists exist. traffickers exist. school shooters exist. there are so many people out there who have killed and/or WILL kill many people who never deserved it. in MY eyes, the good of the many outweighs the good of the few. and having a personal connection to a victim has literally no place in this discussion because regardless of relationships the victims are also real human beings. iโm sure the parents of the victims who were killed by dahmer feel just as bad for the others.

Super inspiring this man. In the first part of the sentence I thought okay he got angry due to the injustice and the he awed me with this explanation! He has a super strong personality and he deserves a medal!
I think him saying how he got two people off of death row probably terrified some people. The justice system is meant to protect the citizens and grants power to do that. And no matter what there will always be someone who abuses power one way or another. Especially in prison which is treated as out of sight out of mind with little repercussions. And even so people feel the โbrotherhoodโ of system as more important than the justice like the judge in sunnys case. Using the system to fight the system probably worried some that they had lost power.

The worst thing is that even though youโre innocent, those people believe they did the right thing. I'm irish and of course this man went through hell but wdym "so irish" like his ethnicity doesn't state anything. Lets say you're American and you are sharing your story of your near death experience and you say something along the lines of what this man said, and some rando comments " that's so American". @@lilynela7937 ah, i knew this comment was going to come.
It's about culture. YES, CULTURE DIVERSITY IS A THING. Or sociologists and antropologists would not exist.
You are free do disagree about my perception, but I've had a couple of instances that made me perceive Irish culture as proud, brave and strong and wholesome.. so when he said that, that's what I thought :)
I'm aware it's confermation bias, maybe he also said a lot of "non-irish" things, but hey, that's what sticked to my mind.
I happen to be Italian and there are a lot of things about my culture some could say I fit in, and some I don't. But when I get loud or when I sound angry to others while I'm only discussing something and they say "that's so Italian" I'm going to laught at it, because we do tend to be louder then central and northern europeans (ON AVERAGE).
Does that mean there's no quiet Italian? Nope. But does that mean that I definitely can recognize fellow Italians in a foreign town sometimes even before they open their mouth or I understand what they say? Yes, and it's funny.
I believe you have that too with people from yours and different countries, and I personally find it enriching to be exposed to different ways both in mentality and communication. As long as I don't force you into a flat idea of a person based on it.

Do these people get compensated for being wrongfully convicted? They deserve something for losing such long portions of their lives
They usually donโt unless they hire lawyers and sue the state
Idk if in other countries they do, but I know in many or all states you can sue the state for the money you would have had if you were working while wrongfully imprisoned.
It usually depends on the state
even if they do (which they dont), i dont know what compensation would be worth it. these people spent nearly decades in prison. think about the guy who was imprisoned at 21 and released 23 years later.. he basically lost his life there even if hes alive
Nothing can compensate that, but they should
It's so disgusting to realize that in every case, police officers pushed to punish people who were innocent just based on their own pride.

Anthony you are such a compassionate and gracious host!!! I love your channel ๐๐โจ
I've always had nightmares that I would be framed and put onto the death row. I've cried and had panic attacks over it. It's very scary to think about. I cant imagine how the innocent felt when found guilty and sentenced at all!
Omg I've had those nightmares as well, they're horrendous
That sounds really rough, this advice may help or make it worse so dont take me too seriously but if it happens it happens. It's so unlikely but phobias and fears arent rational so any possibility feels enough to be scared about so ask yourself, so what if it did happen? I cant control it so it's not my place to spend my time worrying over it. If it happens then I'll deal with it and do my best and fight for myself and that's enough.
If you spend your life worrying that you'll get in a car crash you'll never live properly and will spend so much unnecessary time being scared. So yes there are things to do that will reduce your chance like never drink and drive and dont speed and follow the rules etc but after that you've got to live your life with the knowledge you're doing your best.
So likewise reduce the risk of being wrongfully imprisoned by never committing crimes, dont spend time with people who are doing things illegally and just mind your business and follow the rules. But after that theres no more you can do so theres no point wasting time worrying about it.
I hope this helps someone
