Excellent video! Genndy always tries to grab you visually and hold your attention. I think he's proudest if he can do it without dialog. He'd rather show you than tell you. He strives for interesting and clear staging along with unusual design and color. The worst sin of a designer working for Genndy is to hand in something "generic". Whether it's story, visuals, music... he'll ask "where's the specialness?".

@Talgat Khamit the real reason behind the contrast in the portrayal of Grievous is, from what I understand, a lack of communication between George Lucas and Tartakovsky. I read somewhere that Tartakovsky was handed the designs of the characters with little information as to their personalities. George apparently always saw Grievous as a foreshadowing of Darth Vader. A half machine half organic entity with breathing issues, showing the corruption/misuse of technology or such. Tartakovsky however turned him into the far more memorable jedi-killer badass.
The one thing I loved about Tartakovsky's work is that he made his cartoon stop talking and just HAPPEN. Anime at that time seemed to always have someone in the background explaining every detail. But Genndy let the action speak for itself.
At that time? Even today. Even in adult cartoons/animes... the material is questioning the audience's intelligence by having to breakdown techniques and explaining midway, to explain every fucking detail. I love when in action sequences, there is just fighting and subtle messages, no words, no nothing. Just pure immersion. Think of Saitama vs Genos, Meruem vs Netero, Avatar Last Airbender final fight, Afro Samurai vs Afro Robot and so and so... Those are just so fucking cool.
Richie Garton it is a waste of his talent but unfortunately that’s the kind of animation all of the big studios prefer and won’t dare experiment with something that isn’t guaranteed to make money. I’m sure Genndy isn’t entirely happy doing them either otherwise he wouldn’t be doing what he truly loves to do in between movies like with his new show Primal but he has to make money some way for his family. In my eyes he should be a leading figure in animation and should have a far greater budget if not his own major studio, Sony is sitting on a gold mine with him yet they don’t care it’s an absolute shame, hopefully one day he will get the recognition he deserves in the industry.
I remember watching a panel gennedy was on for the final season of samurai jack, and he was describing the first episodes opening fight with so much onomatopoeia. He even said that if you can’t hear the fight play out, it’s not a good fight. Paraphrased, but it shows how much he cares about the sound design
what comes to mind is the samurai jack episode with the three blind archers at the tower, where Jack blindfolds himself so he can use only sound to guide him, putting him on the same level as the archers. Those scenes of him first acclimating to the world of sound, perceiving things one by one as they enter his ear, each represented by a visual, so we get to both see and hear the soundscape as he perceives it. Beautiful work.
I think the Anakin versus Ventress fight is another prime example of that. With all the extended pauses hearing the hum of the lightsabers and all the sounds of the surrounding jungle, thunder strikes and the sizzle of rain hitting the lightsabers, to simply the exaggerated sound of each hit the characters take. It really just builds an amazing atmosphere.
My favourite Genndy Tartakovsky scene is the one from Samurai Jack where a group of bounty hunters try to take out jack. The scene was snowy and it was in a path surrounded by forests. Nearby was a little cabin. From one of the icicles dripped water. Once one of the drops began to leave the icicle, the bounty hunters got out of hiding, tried to take out jack (Mind you the whole episode was them just planning this). Jack anticipated their moves, countered their attacks and took all of them out, then the drop of water hit the ground. Absolutely surreal and awesome and.... just amazing. This was in season 4 ep 5.
I remember this very well. Of u note previously when they where planning the lead bounty hunter was standing next to this same dripping icecle he was slicing each drop that fell. As the drop fell she took out hier sword sliced the water droplet and then returns her sword to it's original place. Here he shows you the speed and skills of the bounty hunters. Then he uses the same water drop to demonstrate the superior speed and skills of samurai jack. Basically he defeating them all before the drop hits the ground. Simply amazing
Even as a kid I always picked up on and admired that anticipation. In Samurai Jack it always felt like there was a calm before the storm, adding to intensity of Jack’s situation. He’s stuck in an unfamiliar world where he can be attacked at any moment, so he and the audience must be on guard at all times

It's more or less this argument visualized, but still: krplus.net/bidio/m5uHan56Y2nZhJw There's an additional layer to Tartakovsky's animation style that makes it so memorable, and the only other film I can think of that accomplishes the same effect was the first Matrix: story told through action. Compared to TCW, which achieved the same through a much longer story run and traditional mechanics such as dialogue and revelations, the Micro-Series instead relies on the action to provide the characterization... and it works. We see so much of what a character is in how they fight, how they react to dangerous situations, and how it changes them thereafter. I feel this is best shown in three specific characters. In the case of Mace Windu, we are presented the idea of an unstoppable, near raw force of nature who faces death without batting an eye. Who even when disarmed of his lightsaber and faces an army, will fight with his bare hands if need be. Even when faced with a superweapon, he remains the same stoic, unafraid warrior who will charge death head on and maybe even win. And yet, we see a softer side to him in the aftermath of the battle when he takes the moment to be with the observing kid. He is the veteran warrior unafraid of death, and yet not afraid to live. In the case of Anakin Skywalker, we are shown a brash warrior who maintains a balance of recklessness abandon and controlled measure... and we see it pay off. We see him do the impossible because he's willing to take the risk with a smile. And yet when Asajj Ventress enters the scene, we see the mask crack. We see adversity strip away the control to reveal the savage beast underneath bit by bit as the battle drags on until he becomes the very darkness he was fighting not one minute before. With a terrifying scream of hatred in Season 1, and the destruction of his hand in Season 2, we see not Anakin Skywalker, but Darth Vader. And finally in the case of Shaak Ti, a character we have no real interaction with outside the comics, we see a woman confronted by truly terrifying encounters and overcome those fears to fight on. I feel this is best indicated by her two duels with General Grievous, where she is genuinely fear-stricken by the monstrous general in their first encounter, and yet overcomes her fear of him through trickery and subversion. Even her fighting style is a reflection of this, never facing the enemy head on but through ploys and redirection, a stark contrast to the other direct fighters we have seen. And even after fighting such a lengthy duel, she keeps on going, facing down odds where she knows she cannot win. However, unlike Mace's Grim Determination or Anakin's Reckless Bravado, Shaak Ti faces her opponents at the end of Season 2 with Dutiful Fatalism. She knows she will die in her attempt, but she will fulfill her duty regardless. In short, it is not characterization through dialogue or story, but through their actions and deeds. It achieves as much as longer, more story driven shows with far less. Now imagine if Tartakovsky had been given even more seasons or another Star Wars show to work with?

@Elmo's clothesline I would also add that Grievous has an honor complex, especially with his second fight with Shaak Ti. After all, not many would just stop to compliment their opponent's effort when they have them cornered rather than close the distance immediately. Or, in the more famous case, let an opponent live after they've fought you to the point of pure exhaustion. You could even make the case when he goes in to fight Jedi alone, giving them "a warrior's death." The TCW Grievous would probably just sick the droids on them first, wear them down and then finish them off.

I like to think of the scene in Clone Wars where Gen. Grievous is fighting the last standing jedi and clone troopers then the ship bursts in there is a long pause at that moment. It is perfect everybody involved is soaked in anticipation.
Another animation director known for this pose-oriented animation is Hiroyuki Imaishi, and the one he takes after, Yoshinori Kanada. I wonder if Genndy knows of them, and what the similarities and differences are between them
It all truly comes together in his newest work, 'Primal' even with 5 episodes, this show truly shows off everything he's learned throughout his career and damn do I love it!

Lol you think animation comes cheap? How much money have you given to the people who make TV cartoons? Also it's not like they have to choose between either understanding animation or worrying about toy deals - they have different people in charge of doing both. The directors and animators are supposed to understand the principles, while the execs get the toy deals. No toys, no money, no animation. You should be hoping that they get toy deals and that people buy them instead of throwing shade on them like that.

Yes cartoons make a ton of money off of merchandise, specifically toys, that does not mean that if a toy deal falls through, the show is no longer profitable, especially if the show is doing well with critics, fans, and ratings. There is still money made from advertising, streaming contracts, digital and physical media sales.
Tartakovsky is one of the greatest creative minds of the past 50 years. He deserves to be viewed on the level of a Rembrandt or Beethoven, frankly. I have no doubt that animators and writers will still be studying his work hundreds of years from now.

Primal became one of my favorite shows ever. Real and animated. The lack of dialogue in that show is a strength. I get to just zone in on the setup and action. I feel the intensity and emotions going thru the Spear and Fang. I watch them learn to understand each other while facing new dangers every episode. I see their bond grow with them looking out for each other while respecting each others capabilities instead of obvious lovey dovey shit. This show treats the audience as if it has common sense and i appreciate that cuz dialogue exposition has gone overboard these days on many shows and movies. One of my favorite episodes was after the ape fight Spear has to care for Fang who is clinging to life. Out of necessity he has to use his brain to craft something to carry Fang to safety and protect her. The concept of if there is a will there is a way came into play here and it was awesome to watch.
I wish Genndy Tartakovsky would do the entire saga. He'd make the Jedi go down in a different way which would be more entertaining and all the fights would be so much more epic than the weak ones we got. The man is a legend and his cartoons were better than anything else in the Star Wars universe.
One thing to add is that we get clear beats for cause and effect. With the Mace Windu fight, we have a clear beat for the pins coming out, then a separate beat for the droid falling apart. A clear read on him throwing the parts, then a separate one on the droids being shredded. We get a clear read on an action and it's results, even if it's just a characters reaction to it.

Korra is my favourite protagonist, and yet I literally forgot he worked on her show... embarrassing lol Lately I’ve been so appreciative of animators like Genndy Taratovsky and Vivienne Medrano (Vivziepop of Hazbin Hotel fame), for proving adult animation can be so much more. Cartoons having heart, personality, passion, taking themselves seriously, and actually being FUN shouldn’t automatically make it “for kids.” It shouldn’t have to be all stiff, lifeless, and boring looking. (Family Guy, South Park, Simpson’s, and Bobs Burgers all have similar styles, or a lack of actual movement a lot of the time,) in order to be respected. Genndy and Viv handle animation differently, but both have made shows where the timing and movement enhances the storytelling, the character designs are allowed to have gesture, expressive proportions, and tons of personality, and not everything is an ironic *wink wink* “we don’t actually take this seriously” lack of heart. I love seeing adult animation that is allowed to be genuine and sincere.
I love Korra, genuinely, and I completely agree with you. Being authentic with your work is so important. It gives a hugely powerful base that I can't flaw and only appreciate.
That anticipation was something I noticed a lot in Samurai Jack. It spends a lot of time with slow shots, just... waiting. But it doesn't feel like dead time, you're not bored. Anticipation is absolutely the best way to put it. You know something is about to happen, but there's a feeling of suspense. When? Where does it come from? How does it start? Who attacks first? You're on the edge of your seat.
The problem with a lot of animation - especially shōnen anime where the main focus is on the action is that too many corners get cut to speed up production. With a breakneck schedule, who wants to take the time in carefully and deliberately planning out such kinetic pageantry? The industry is not inherently conducive to quality. Occasionally there are some real gems which don't focus on close, shaky shots and rapid cuts, but this is unfortunately the minority.
There are some very interesting points here, of course you're spot on about TV schedules, they are a lumbering behemoth, and once rolling, it's a battle to keep up. From what I've seen, which is a smattering of shows, a lot of Anime shows spend time on conversation with minimal movement, lots of close ups and environmental shot, so they can shift portions of the budgets to action fluidly.
The original clone wars was my early childhood, I watched iy all the time, and it made Mace one of the coolest characters ever. The action in that series is amazing!
Genndy is the absolute definition of a artist. The thing that stuck out for me in Samrurai Jack was the artwork, it's so unique but at the same time just beautiful to look at. The colors, the abstract shapes, the little flecks and gradients.. Phenomenal.
Got this video in recommended just now and suddenly realized that those exact techniques were also used in filming Kingsman fight scenes. And made them freakin awesome.

I love how much of a badass characterization of Grievous we get here just from the action alone. At this point, we don't know who he is yet. But we see how emotionless he is, realize how feared he is and then how he fights and takes on 2, 3, 4 Jedi at the same times and he's basically toying with them like a Bird does with an insect that it's about to eat. What masterful work.

I almost feel that Kingsman follows this style, maybe not quite with the buildup but the pauses on significant poses as well as slowing things down to make it clear what is going on.

The Carpenter Brut sequence in the end gave me chills. I've always loved fight scenes from Tartakovsky shows spliced into action montages, it really lets the animation shine.

I think as great of a shot coordinator as Genndy is, what many people overlook is his great usage of sound.

I remember this very well. Of u note previously when they where planning the lead bounty hunter was standing next to this same dripping icecle he was slicing each drop that fell. As the drop fell she took out hier sword sliced the water droplet and then returns her sword to it's original place. Here he shows you the speed and skills of the bounty hunters. Then he uses the same water drop to demonstrate the superior speed and skills of samurai jack. Basically he defeating them all before the drop hits the ground. Simply amazing

I never cared for Star Wars as a series until Genndy's take with Clone Wars. That series was fantastic
Even as a kid I always picked up on and admired that anticipation. In Samurai Jack it always felt like there was a calm before the storm, adding to intensity of Jack’s situation. He’s stuck in an unfamiliar world where he can be attacked at any moment, so he and the audience must be on guard at all times
That Mace Windu scene has always been a favourite of mine also, because of the amazing timing. Glad I'm not the only fan of it!

There's an additional layer to Tartakovsky's animation style that makes it so memorable, and the only other film I can think of that accomplishes the same effect was the first Matrix: story told through action. Compared to TCW, which achieved the same through a much longer story run and traditional mechanics such as dialogue and revelations, the Micro-Series instead relies on the action to provide the characterization... and it works. We see so much of what a character is in how they fight, how they react to dangerous situations, and how it changes them thereafter. I feel this is best shown in three specific characters.
In the case of Mace Windu, we are presented the idea of an unstoppable, near raw force of nature who faces death without batting an eye. Who even when disarmed of his lightsaber and faces an army, will fight with his bare hands if need be. Even when faced with a superweapon, he remains the same stoic, unafraid warrior who will charge death head on and maybe even win. And yet, we see a softer side to him in the aftermath of the battle when he takes the moment to be with the observing kid. He is the veteran warrior unafraid of death, and yet not afraid to live.
In the case of Anakin Skywalker, we are shown a brash warrior who maintains a balance of recklessness abandon and controlled measure... and we see it pay off. We see him do the impossible because he's willing to take the risk with a smile. And yet when Asajj Ventress enters the scene, we see the mask crack. We see adversity strip away the control to reveal the savage beast underneath bit by bit as the battle drags on until he becomes the very darkness he was fighting not one minute before. With a terrifying scream of hatred in Season 1, and the destruction of his hand in Season 2, we see not Anakin Skywalker, but Darth Vader.
And finally in the case of Shaak Ti, a character we have no real interaction with outside the comics, we see a woman confronted by truly terrifying encounters and overcome those fears to fight on. I feel this is best indicated by her two duels with General Grievous, where she is genuinely fear-stricken by the monstrous general in their first encounter, and yet overcomes her fear of him through trickery and subversion. Even her fighting style is a reflection of this, never facing the enemy head on but through ploys and redirection, a stark contrast to the other direct fighters we have seen. And even after fighting such a lengthy duel, she keeps on going, facing down odds where she knows she cannot win. However, unlike Mace's Grim Determination or Anakin's Reckless Bravado, Shaak Ti faces her opponents at the end of Season 2 with Dutiful Fatalism. She knows she will die in her attempt, but she will fulfill her duty regardless.
In short, it is not characterization through dialogue or story, but through their actions and deeds. It achieves as much as longer, more story driven shows with far less. Now imagine if Tartakovsky had been given even more seasons or another Star Wars show to work with?

@Elmo's clothesline I would also add that Grievous has an honor complex, especially with his second fight with Shaak Ti. After all, not many would just stop to compliment their opponent's effort when they have them cornered rather than close the distance immediately. Or, in the more famous case, let an opponent live after they've fought you to the point of pure exhaustion.
You could even make the case when he goes in to fight Jedi alone, giving them "a warrior's death." The TCW Grievous would probably just sick the droids on them first, wear them down and then finish them off.

I like to think of the scene in Clone Wars where Gen. Grievous is fighting the last standing jedi and clone troopers then the ship bursts in there is a long pause at that moment.
It is perfect everybody involved is soaked in anticipation.
And this makes me more excited to see what Primal has in store for us genndy truly is a great inspiration.
Another animation director known for this pose-oriented animation is Hiroyuki Imaishi, and the one he takes after, Yoshinori Kanada. I wonder if Genndy knows of them, and what the similarities and differences are between them

Lol you think animation comes cheap? How much money have you given to the people who make TV cartoons? Also it's not like they have to choose between either understanding animation or worrying about toy deals - they have different people in charge of doing both. The directors and animators are supposed to understand the principles, while the execs get the toy deals. No toys, no money, no animation. You should be hoping that they get toy deals and that people buy them instead of throwing shade on them like that.

Yes cartoons make a ton of money off of merchandise, specifically toys, that does not mean that if a toy deal falls through, the show is no longer profitable, especially if the show is doing well with critics, fans, and ratings. There is still money made from advertising, streaming contracts, digital and physical media sales.
Tartakovsky is one of the greatest creative minds of the past 50 years. He deserves to be viewed on the level of a Rembrandt or Beethoven, frankly. I have no doubt that animators and writers will still be studying his work hundreds of years from now.

An incredible director.
Primal became one of my favorite shows ever. Real and animated. The lack of dialogue in that show is a strength. I get to just zone in on the setup and action. I feel the intensity and emotions going thru the Spear and Fang. I watch them learn to understand each other while facing new dangers every episode. I see their bond grow with them looking out for each other while respecting each others capabilities instead of obvious lovey dovey shit. This show treats the audience as if it has common sense and i appreciate that cuz dialogue exposition has gone overboard these days on many shows and movies. One of my favorite episodes was after the ape fight Spear has to care for Fang who is clinging to life. Out of necessity he has to use his brain to craft something to carry Fang to safety and protect her. The concept of if there is a will there is a way came into play here and it was awesome to watch.
Genndy truly is a master director
I wish Genndy Tartakovsky would do the entire saga. He'd make the Jedi go down in a different way which would be more entertaining and all the fights would be so much more epic than the weak ones we got. The man is a legend and his cartoons were better than anything else in the Star Wars universe.

One thing to add is that we get clear beats for cause and effect. With the Mace Windu fight, we have a clear beat for the pins coming out, then a separate beat for the droid falling apart. A clear read on him throwing the parts, then a separate one on the droids being shredded. We get a clear read on an action and it's results, even if it's just a characters reaction to it.
Good point, I didn't touch enough on it in this video, I kind of skimmed through it talking about the posing and how he lays out key poses for us to follow through the cause to the effect

Lately I’ve been so appreciative of animators like Genndy Taratovsky and Vivienne Medrano (Vivziepop of Hazbin Hotel fame), for proving adult animation can be so much more. Cartoons having heart, personality, passion, taking themselves seriously, and actually being FUN shouldn’t automatically make it “for kids.”
It shouldn’t have to be all stiff, lifeless, and boring looking. (Family Guy, South Park, Simpson’s, and Bobs Burgers all have similar styles, or a lack of actual movement a lot of the time,) in order to be respected. Genndy and Viv handle animation differently, but both have made shows where the timing and movement enhances the storytelling, the character designs are allowed to have gesture, expressive proportions, and tons of personality, and not everything is an ironic *wink wink* “we don’t actually take this seriously” lack of heart. I love seeing adult animation that is allowed to be genuine and sincere.
I love Korra, genuinely, and I completely agree with you. Being authentic with your work is so important. It gives a hugely powerful base that I can't flaw and only appreciate.
That anticipation was something I noticed a lot in Samurai Jack. It spends a lot of time with slow shots, just... waiting. But it doesn't feel like dead time, you're not bored. Anticipation is absolutely the best way to put it. You know something is about to happen, but there's a feeling of suspense. When? Where does it come from? How does it start? Who attacks first? You're on the edge of your seat.

The problem with a lot of animation - especially shōnen anime where the main focus is on the action is that too many corners get cut to speed up production. With a breakneck schedule, who wants to take the time in carefully and deliberately planning out such kinetic pageantry? The industry is not inherently conducive to quality. Occasionally there are some real gems which don't focus on close, shaky shots and rapid cuts, but this is unfortunately the minority.
There are some very interesting points here, of course you're spot on about TV schedules, they are a lumbering behemoth, and once rolling, it's a battle to keep up.
From what I've seen, which is a smattering of shows, a lot of Anime shows spend time on conversation with minimal movement, lots of close ups and environmental shot, so they can shift portions of the budgets to action fluidly.

The original clone wars was my early childhood, I watched iy all the time, and it made Mace one of the coolest characters ever. The action in that series is amazing!

Genndy is the absolute definition of a artist. The thing that stuck out for me in Samrurai Jack was the artwork, it's so unique but at the same time just beautiful to look at. The colors, the abstract shapes, the little flecks and gradients.. Phenomenal.

I love how much of a badass characterization of Grievous we get here just from the action alone.
At this point, we don't know who he is yet. But we see how emotionless he is, realize how feared he is and then how he fights and takes on 2, 3, 4 Jedi at the same times and he's basically toying with them like a Bird does with an insect that it's about to eat. What masterful work.

I almost feel that Kingsman follows this style, maybe not quite with the buildup but the pauses on significant poses as well as slowing things down to make it clear what is going on.
I sat through this whole thing, all I have to say is WOW! This really details how good Genndy is at creating good action without it being a blur. I have always loved his style. Great video!
