I've made many sub boxes and car audio enclosures with a similar method. I always used fleece though. Watch out for stretching when you add the resin. You'll probably lose some of that shape when it gets heavy with resin.

  • @HomeBuiltByJeff
    @HomeBuiltByJeff 4 년 전 +263

Nice work on the wire frame. Great method, I would just suggest go very light on the first layer of resin, as when I did this in the past, the resin was too heavy and bowed the material down more than I would have liked. Even spraying the first light layer or resin on could be worth while. Looking forward to seeing the results.

    • @codyzimmerman6831

Agreed, most shops that do this kind of method for sub boxes etc. they rely on the weight to give that drooping flowing look. In Chris' case, he doesn't want that. I'm a little stressed for the next episode :P

    Gday Chris,
Consider Dynel cloth after you have hardened the stretch cloth with resin. Dynel is a woven maliable polyester cloth that is used by timber boat builders to give the outer surface a hard wearing epoxy skin. Dynel has a “silkiness” quality to it and follows form without the “pleats and gathers” whereas glass and carbon fibre are a bit stiff to start with.
I’d spray the resin on your fabric too in a few very light part coats, allowing to dry between coats to stop it sagging. Then Dynel over when fabric is stiff. Buy yourself some grooved metal mini rollers to roll the resin into the Dynel or glass layers to remove air and manipulate the Dynel cloth to where you want it to lay. Hope it helps,
    good luck!
    Cheers mate 🍻🍷

@@captainzoll3303 lmao. I could no longer handle watching dahm, is he still trying to build the 4 rotor he's been working on for like 5years now? Has it ever run enough for him to drive it at all?

A torch works great to get rid of air bubbles when it comes time for the resin. Looking good

I sort of got what you meant when you were explaining the idea of stretching fabric over a skeleton. But at the end, when it actually sat on the car, it all clicked and looked good. Awesome body shape

The fabric will stretch out and create a concave surface due to the weight of the resin.
    B is for Bondo?

Wouldn't it be easier to 3D print those body panels?

Absolutely loving this build! By far the best one that I've seen on KRplus so far.

  • @benjaminkamben4908

This is the most interesting way to build a body kit I have ever seen. Best of luck Chris.

You should make some front fender the same way. The current ones look to stock/factory.
The back ones you built put them to shame.

Won't it catch the wind at high speed and rip itself off the car?

I've seen the fabric stretch method used in car audio door panels, for molding around the big speaker pods. Totally valid approach.

I would definitely do some body filler work on the fabric before you put carbon fiber over it

Was waiting sooo long for this video, but it was worth it. Loved the way it all worked out with the stretchy fabric. Can't wait to see it with the carbon fiber.

fabric method has been done in custom car audio for decades now to get smooth flowing shapes. reinforce it your structure with the fibreglass from the inside if you want to cut down on finishing work and keep your crisp smooth lines

I was skeptical about how it would turn out but this piece looks awesome. Now im skeptical with how it is going to get tied into the bumper and side skirts and how the finished product will look with the double vent. Wishing you the best! Thanks for showing us!
