I know there are always a bunch of 'experts' telling you what you are doing wrong. I definitely won't do that, but when I first started painting cars at home many many years ago, I used to get fish eyes all the time as well. I tried the fish eye drops and they helped a little but they didn't eliminate them. I eventually started doing my first full coat as a 'dust coat', and let it dry, then I eventually built up to full coats after that and I no longer get fish eyes at all. One thing not to do, as much as you want to fix it straight away , as soon as you see a hint of a fish eye, stop and let it dry as it sits, then go back and dust over it again when it is dry until the fish eyes are gone. I know that frustration of wanting to fix it straight away, but (as I am sure you have already seen) the more wet paint you put on top of a fish eye, the worse it gets. You probably know this already, but hopefully some others can gain something from this.

Just a tip the only reason you will get fish eyes in you paint job is because of contaminants in the air or on the surface of the panel. What are contaminants? Things like armor all, wd40, pb blaster silicon based products. Products like these should never be spayed in a paint room or even the same building where paint is being done. I know that may be impossible is this situation if so then you should be able to use your wax and grease remover to eliminate fisheyes. You must wipe wax and grease remover off while wet this may help. Another tip when appling the first coat of clear dust it on dry or very lightly the clear will not fisheye in a dry coat let it cure thoroughly and then you should be able to hit it with a heavier coat and then a flow coat and this should eliminate fisheyes. Good luck and keep up the awesome builds!

Fish eye is from contaminated body panels, working in a room that you are creating dust and kicking up stuff in the same room you are painting isnt good. The best thing to so is to work on the parts in another room and paint in your makeshift booth. Another thing is to drain the compressor every time you are going to paint. Mist coats in first and second coat is what is best to prevent such things. Having the room nice and clean and wipping down panels with distilled water and alcohol mixed is the best degreaser to get amazing results also having good paint filters is a good practice to use. A moisture trap at gun end is another good step to practice on.

Chris! I’m quite sure I know why you got fisheyes on the door. From what I could tell watching the time lapse it looks like you wiped it down with some type of surface cleaner like a wax a grease remover or something similar, and then started spraying paint within a couple minutes or so. The only time I’ve ever had fisheyes in a paint job is when I didn’t wait for the wax and grease remover to fully flash/dry out. I find at least 30-40 minutes is safe. But it depends on the type of product you’re using to wipe it down with. I hope you see this Chris!

      Z. Kommer they have a friend with a paint booth or family with one. Paint booths are 20+ thousand dollars by them self. Plus you have to have somewhere to put said paint booth. Go look at someone like gunman. While he is a professional painter he can paint in the same conditions that b is for build is and have it come out fine. B is for build simply has terrible luck and not enough skill/knowledge of paint work. Takes time to be able to paint like a professional unless you have 20-40k to drop into a controlled paint booth.

I knew it was going to go horrendously wrong way before he started spraying. I had my own workshop for twenty years and did hundreds of spray jobs in that time. There are so many things wrong here, it's difficult to know where to start.
First of all though, a spray booth is supposed to be a dust free environment. No way should you be doing body filling repairs and sanding in the same room. Getting the floor wet is correct but everything else in the room is covered in dust. The next thing is clothing. All that fish eye could be explained just by the inappropriate clothing being worn, let alone anything else. It's essential to wear spotlessly clean non fibre overalls when spraying. I always used to wear those disposable paper type white overalls. Fish eye is cause by silicones being present. Polishes contain silicones so using them will spread tiny particles all around the area. That whole shop is going to be full of silicone dust.
Before you can spray anything, it's essential to kill any silicone present. I never found any of the surface preparations designed to prevent fish eye to be any good quite honestly. I was taught and found to be correct, the best thing by far was simply a few drops of washing up detergent in a bucket of water and wash all surfaces down with that. Then hose eveything down thoroughly with fresh water, blow dry with the airline and finally wipe everything with a tack cloth. I've been told in the past that detergent can contain silicone too but I never had a problem doing it my way. I could spray a whole car and not have a single fish eye.

I understand this channel is about DIY and budget, so I don’t want you to go and buy a $30k paint booth, but I think you can do something. Goonzsquad channel on youtube, I believe rents a paint booth but I feel that wouldn’t work well for your channel because you did buy the place you work from. When ever you work on something your going to paint before you touch it you need to wax and grease remove it because your going to be sanding all that crap on the panel into the paint which will come up later when you paint even if you wax and grease before painting. If you noticed, what you call plastic, the bumper, came out just right; the problem was with the metal door. And that's not a rattle can either, lol+smh.

I would be laughed at if i wa to prep metal parts like i prep plastic parts. Fish eye is a contamination issue.

if you use fish eye eliminator once on that car...if you ever have to paint anything on it again and dont use it. It will fish eye all to hell. I never use it painting at work, it's all in your prep work. Could be something as simple as using a dirty rag or contanaments on the panels still. Or water, oil in your air lines.
