The one thing that bothers me about this channel is the builds that have deadlines. I understand the achievement of being able to complete a build in a set amount of time or if you’re building a car for SEMA. However, I would like to see a build that you thoroughly do. No corner cutting, no deadlines, no settling for less. My vote is for you to finish the Z, I’d hate for you to put all that time and effort into the build only to leave it as is with the flaws you pointed out. I get that it was a SEMA build and you accomplished your goal of showing it there, but the car is not complete. It would be a shame to just let it continue on like this, especially if you’re unable to enjoy the car in its current state. Winter is coming, you won’t be able to drive the car how it’s meant to be driven. I hope that you take this winter to finish the car and have it ready for spring and summer.

You also have to realize, that's VERY DIFFICULT. There will always be corner cutting, there will always be deadlines, there's no possible way to constantly work on 1 vehicle until it's perfect. Also, over time he would get tired of working on it and want to mess with something else.

    • @kd4134
      @kd4134 5 년 전 +5

Petrol Monkey I understand the car won’t ever be “perfect” but the flaws that he pointed out are generally things you’d want to have fixed to make the car complete. There won’t be deadlines if you’re building a car for fun. SEMA is finished, he accomplished his goal of bringing his car there. But even he knows the car is far from “done”. I don’t see the point of putting this build on hold to start a new build when this one isn’t complete. But this is my opinion and perspective. If he wishes to begin the next build, I’ll support him regardless. But as a car enthusiast myself, I’d wish to see this build be completed.

You probably have 3-4 episodes left on the 240Z before it's going to sit until spring 2019. Do both. Knock out the small stuff and then park it while you figure out the transmission deal. How you do everything is good content to film and show. Maybe showing how you fix something or research something will give someone else the confidence to do a similar swap later on.

I think that organizing your shop would be the most important at this stage. Get rid of as much "things" and "stuff" as possible. Get tools well sorted out and make your shop a nice and comfortable place to be...a place you enjoy and can think clearly in.
Then maby make a list of the biggest unknown's and difficult challenges the Fairlady M needs before a proper shakedown/track test day. So when the car is really ready for testing and tuning, you could park it nicely somewhere knowing that it works well and is ready for the next step.
Then you can relax and truly enjoy your new project. Don't rush in to it now Chris! Be smart and get down to scratch again, where stuff is organized and you don't keep thinking about all the "what ifs" on the 240. You need that car out of your system so something new can have your full focus.
It has been so inspiring following you Chris. Thank you a lot for your endurance and passion. You truly dare to do things your way and refuses to sell out. Cheers from Norway.

I want you to finish the z entirely for one reason, and one reason only; for the fact that it will be everything you've dreamt in a finalized (or mostly) state that you can fully enjoy to the vehicle's limits.
I've always felt you jump to new projects because it keeps the flow going, but also due to being afraid of what that finalization can mean for the car...that it will be sold. I honestly believe this car is a different narrative for the B is for Build story. The tipping point to major life changes, and things to come.
Complete it to a state of reliability, and keep her. Imagine a huge B is for Build shop with it in the showroom window.
Edit: I know he said he will never sell it, but people do get bored. I just feel this one has to exist far into the future.

Its going to be great to see it finish but I say move on to the New Build, you guys worked you butts off on the 240Z especially the last month of the build and deserve to see something new, from experience burnout could turn you off of finishing it. So take a brake from it, make a list on what it needs to be finished on it set it aside and take on the new build, then finish the Z. Thank you for the always awesome builds and content.

My opinion can be summed up as, "Why not both?"
I think you can stagger episodes or do some other mix (say, 3 ep new build, 1 ep 240z), like with the Gambler 500 cars, so that you can be totally ready to have fun with it when the weather and track openings make it possible again. That way you can have a full fleet of B is for Build track cars once the weather and track conditions make it right. Further, it can help avoid stalls in the builds. Is that new bumper for the next car going to take a week to ship and you can't do much else? Keep adjusting the breaks on the 240z in the meantime. You have more paint drying on the 240z hood? Spend the rest of the day on the next beast.
At a minimum, I'd like to see the 240z cleared for being street safe and legal. That way it won't be looming over you when you do have a chance to drive it.

    Here's my advice Chris...
You'll need to address the driveshaft, it's a u-joint on one end and a cv joint on the other. Unless it runs perfectly straight, it will oscillate and vibrate your car apart, u-joints on an angle actually change the output speed of the driveshaft as they turn.
The body is mounted several inches too high on the frame so your dragging the diff at ride height. Any aggressive driving without jacking the suspension will smash it constantly. Plus the rear toe will always be off (as you had to buy adjustment control arms because its so poorly placed relative to the body, ride height changes will throw off toe.
You really should build something to better mount the front sub frame, you actually cut off one of the braces that should have triangulated the mounting points, don't want that breaking apart.
I had the top comment in one of your early videos where we (people who have tried, failed and succeeded in the past and wanted to pass on knowledge) tried to warn you about everything you were overlooking, that has now progressed into serious problems that make this car fundamentally flawed
I like your videos, seriously. I reached out over emails to try and warn you about the problems but never herd back. Hopefully I'm wrong and it works out well enough

I’ve also mentioned this drive shaft a couple off times during the build! Either have 2 uni’s or 2 cv’s you can’t mix and match, there is no second uni to cancel out the un-constant velocity of the first uni.

Spend the winter finishing the car, so you can enjoy it in the summer. It would be a shame to leave it half done after all the work. On the side you can do smaller projects and fix up the workshop. A lot of your cars seem to disappear once their builds end, maybe you can do some videos fixing anything wrong with them.

    1) Finish the 240Z. Transmission, Interior, a PROPER HOOD (with hood hinges), mount the grill and fix the fuel cell.
    2) Make a nice garage for your fleet. Throw a wall down of the house if you must to. I believe you are not living there anyway. Something like Freddy is doing
    3) Clean the cars. My OCD is about to quit my brain.
    4) Here I would tell you to replace the windshield of the Aston, but no. NEVER CHANGE THAT sanded piece of glass. Build a proper grill please.
    5) Does the Plan A has the Exhaust done?
These are just some crazy thoughts. Do whatever you want. We will still support the channel and the people/companies that support it as well.

Unless you’re going to sell it, I really want to see this car get worked on to the point it can be a daily driver. This has been the most exciting build for me to watch on KRplus cause there’s basically nothing in the world like it. Even a supercar is less unique.
That said, I know resolving all these little things is the opposite of the fast paced type of content that this channel is about, so it totally makes sense to start a new build, and give this car some love when you have the time. I totally agree with all the guys saying do an episode once a week on it. I love the fast paced content, but I feel like this car deserves to get the proper treatment of every little detail getting resolved, even if that takes a few years.

Reading the comments I understand where everyone is coming from regarding finishing the build right, but a couple things to keep in mind is that this man has content to create, and he has worked on the Datsun nonstop for months. We work on our projects on nights and weekends and its our get away, but Chris's day job was this car. I understand taking break as well because being a fellow Oregonian , I understand that this car WILL NOT BE DRIVEN in the Winter. That being said, I'd like to see the Datsun big power super light build and the super engineered and super expensive hypercar build be finished in tandem for a testing and track day in the spring/early summer. Also like someone else's idea of doing a Datsun day episode once a week. But ultimately, it is your channel, do whatever you want to, we'll all still watch.

You've gotta finish the 240z build first because if you don't you'll end up not getting around to it. Bare minimum would be good nuf, brakes, air suspension and transmission. And get a hood you put all that work in you've gotta protect it.

  • @DonPablo2011

Like almost everyone else that's commented. Finish it and make it look like it's come out of the factory. I realise you said it would be done in the background and not filmed, but as we've seen it from a shell to almost completion it would be a shame not to see the final buttoned up car.
It'd be great to see the interior finished, the centre armrests re-trimmed. The dashboard looking factory and the wiring hidden. As another subscriber said, tuned and on the dyno.
Personally, I think the shiny carbon centre to the steering wheel is hideous.
Anyway, those are my thoughts, it's a marvelous build regardless but would be a shame not to see it finished. Chin chin.

New build!!! I love your content and I think you deserve a change of pace and breather from the Z. We all love the car, and we know you do, but it's only normal and healthy to take a break and start the next build for a little while. It's not "incomplete", it's just on a break until the next phase.

  • @satchmosanzabar9023

Please finish the 240z before jumping to a new project You guys put in so much work so far on it, and both your team and the car deserves the satisfaction of being road-worthy. Most feedback I've seen on the car is the drivers seating is too cramped. You should make that first priority along with transmission limp mode. If you are worried about the weather in Oregon, take a weekend trip to somewhere dry and get on a dragstrip and racetrack to run it though it's paces. ALSO, fendor mirrors please! Love the channel.

As a fellow builder, I understand the predicament. I’d suggest working on the Z in the background, when you get that motivation/info/resources/supplies to move forward with it, work on it.
Although I don’t KRplus and I only do it as a hobby between work, kids and general life, I’ve found my daily driver needing lots of work, and my project has taken the back seat again, now the daily is near ‘finished’ and is 95% up to spec, I’ve started to work on the project again, ordering parts, reassembling it, but when the daily needs work, the project takes a back seat for a few days, I wish I hadn’t pulled the project off the road again, but hindsight right? At least in your situation u have plenty of cars to drive so u don’t have to worry bout a daily.
Take little nibbles out of the Z, record wat u can, when u can, even if the next episode is a month away, and u work on 4 times over that month, and u only get 1 short update episode, do it that way, it allows u to break up your work and keep u motivated and interested.

Also maybe do a meet and greet with the car somewhere. I too would like to see it completed since you've gone this far with it.

I would say it would be best to keep the momentum and finish it to perfection before jumping into the other project. The SMG transmissions are very temperamental and will go into limp mode if any of the system's components are slightly out of spec mainly the pump and solenoids. I would suggest outsourcing the issue to a BMW indy shop due to the complexity of diagnosing the system. With regards to the brakes, the system bleeds them automatically through the BMW DIS software.

Working with cars should be fun. If I was in a shoe, I would be quite tired of 240Z. Especially the great job you did before SEMA. I would start at the next building. Do not forget to make a list of what's left on 240z before setting it aside until the glow pops up again.
By the way, I would have done a clear glass hood to the car. Rumor says it should not be so difficult to vacuum in PE plastic.
Also mesh over the intake rakes so that you do not suck small birds and gravel into the engine
But this is just what I should have done.
Thank you for a wonderful channel
