It's been two weeks and I'm still pissed. The front office would've been better off going to Mike Budenholzer's house and BEGGING him to come back. Adrian Griffin never should have been hired in the first place, now we're stuck with him instead of having someone like Nick Nurse instead.

Doc is the most defensive coach. He always cuts off reporters questions' and gets easily agitated.
He gets upset when you suggest he make adjustments and create gameplans like a coach should instead of letting his star players “figure it out”
That interview where he went scenario you scenario breaking down why the teams he’s coached couldn’t win was absolutely pathetic. Can’t imagine ever hiring him to coach a team after seeing that or playing for him. In his mind he’s just coached a bunch of losers

In ever-so-slight fairness to Doc's tenure in LA, he at least was WAY better than Vinny Del Negro, the coach he replaced.

almost laughable... Big 3 & Rondo, Thibodeau is an assistant coach. 7 games in round 1 & 2 (losing all road games), 6 games in conference & finals. They barely won the championship

What annoys me as a Sixers fan is that I knew this was a thing before we hired him. So when we did hire him I basically knew that these years were gonna be wasted. The guy is such a horrible coach.

@@joshuagregory8425 i mean yeah. doc's plays and adjustments had the duo taking horrible shots and forced into situations they aren't made for. note how different his play is without Embiid in game 1, and how well the team did. then notice what happened when embiid came back and Doc was working so hard to force embiid into the low post while the defense just lets itself set up immediately

The first Coach Nick video I ever saw was his Clippers-Rockets Game 6 Breakdown. Time flies! Speaking of the Clippers, I'll never forget how, during their infamous meltdown at the end of Game 5 vs the Thunder, Doc spent the final two minutes screaming at the refs over a bad call ("that was our ball") instead of doing any coaching or even being engaged in the game to any degree. Even after the final buzzer sounded, he kept yelling "that was our ball" at the refs like a broken record. If that's not the definition of useless "coaching" at the most crucial time, I don't know what is
I remember that so vividly. Im surprised Nick didn't dive into the clippers series against the thunder. That game 5 still haunts me haha almost as bad as the meltdown the next year against the rockets.

As a coach, when James Harden joins your team, you can start looking for a new job. Dude is a wrecking ball and messes up every team.
@@tropickman and besides Doc, Harden is to blame for the loss. I literally predicted Harden would keep the Sixers from making it out of the second round IN THE PRESEASON. In Game seven he was 3-11 for 9 points and had five turnovers with his seven assists. In game six, Harden was 4-16 for 13 points and again had five turnovers. In game two, Harden was 2-14 for 12 points. This is what Harden always does in the playoffs, because he spent over a decade staying up partying and has never had proper respect for the game to be in playoff condition physically or mentally.

He gave Owners, GMs and high-profile media like S.A Smith BJ'S.
He made a ton of adjustments. As did Boston.
If James won't shoot a floater that's not on Doc. If Embiid can't get position on Marcus Smart that's not on Doc. I never saw Shaq let someone push him out to 15 feet. He sealed them 3 feet from the basket and put them in the stanchion
Btw go listen to Thinking Basketball and the Dunker Spot if you don't understand what adjustments were made and care to learn. (Two best basketball podcasts by far.) Or listen to anything Tim Legler is on.
@@michaelahurt Embiid was getting to the post but Williams being the backside help for Horford made it difficult. They took away the PNR cause Horford would not even follow Harden he ran back to Embiid once that happened it was on Doc to come up with a counter play to soften that defensive coverage. I blame Harden more than Embiid cause the C's made a huge point to take him away and yeah he helped them a little by not forcing some of the action. Game 6 is where Doc negligence should be in full display Embiid didn't get the ball for 3 minutes in that 4th quarter. FYI: I think Thinking Basketball is the best. Coach here shows his biases a lot especially to players he doesn't like.

I agree it’s on Harden more. He wasn’t even looking at the rim even without Rob.
But Embiid looked disinterested from minute 1 of game 7 and he completely let go of the rope in the third. There were no offensive rebounding attempts. No post seals or attempts to get deep position. Obviously the defense was atrocious which is just hilarious since it’s the whole reason people said he was MVP
With Doc, I mean, it’s a pick and roll offense. Harden-Embiid PnR *is* the offense. They aren’t gonna start running Miami’s sets with Tobias as Jimmy Butler. But they did get into it different ways and make small adjustments throughout the series. They put Maxey on the weak side. Harris. PJ. Embiid got switches and just bailed. If players don’t relocate, don’t cut, don’t screen off ball … If we know to do that at the YMCA I’m just not buying that pros don’t know to do that unless the coach is directing them. And anyway Philly was on Boston’s end so it’s not like the coaches could communicate with them anyway. It’s not Doc’s fault Harden was passing like he just got moved up to varsity and spraying passes worse than Tim Tebow. It’s not Doc’s fault they missed open three after open three.
Even on defense, Boston *wants* two on the ball. Switching is smart. Embiid just has to be better. But they *did* try lots of things. Boston just made every shot.
Game 6, I mean Embiid was in the PnR 4 times in the last 3 minutes. It’s not like Doc was calling sets for Tobias. He even got a switch with Brown but didn’t even call for the ball. That’s James not Doc. And btw they got good shots until James’ missed layup (where he ignored Brown on Embiid) and turnover the next play before they could run anything. But saying ‘Doc didn’t get Embiid the ball’ when he’s in every action is disingenuous

He's a coach that got lucky enough to get carried by a lot of talent but deeper in the playoffs is where true coaches shine with adjustments, line up changes, and different schemes

The 2008 title run seems like even more of a miracle now. The Celtics were awful in the first 2.5 rounds. How did they pull it together in the Finals? Was it the Celtics big 3 going into business for themselves? Doc made coaching adjustments? Lakers choked? How did Doc pull this off?
Thibs as assistant coach made great defensive adjustments. Celtics greatly missed his presence in the early 2010s, and the Bulls where Thibs went made a big leap defensively.
Truth is.. When Superstars performs.. Team rises.. Celts 08 has KG & Pierce who were Tough as Nail competitor.. Rondo was a sneaky genius X & O pointguard.. Doc seems to be a Player & Media pleaser all this time.. NOT a bench Tactician... when face w/ Playoff Pressure & challenges.. he melts
Lucky with 3 HOF playoffs that'll won him 1 and only championship in 2008.
Lakers in the 08 finals didn’t have Bynum and Ariza due to injuries, they get Gasol via trade, that Celtics team with Pierce, Allen KG and a young uprising Rondo with that deep bench and a defensive minded coaching staff of Thibs.
That 2008 Celtics team is the most overrated championship team in history.
They went 7 games against a Cavs team with no other star outside LBJ with LBJ averaging 5 turnovers a game on sub 40 shooting and 7 games against a Hawks team led by Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Mike Bibby

Finally someone says what I’ve been trying to tell everyone around me. All this “wanting it more” myth is some BS. Most of the times it’s down to executing and planning a game plan well enough. Doc isn’t the guy for that.

I always felt Doc Rivers was the most overrated coach of all time, and Mike D'antoni the most under-appreciated coach of all time. I blame Stephen A Smith for both. Always hyping Doc no matter what and always trashing D'antoni. I think it's a flat out disgrace that the whole league ended up playing like the Phoenix Suns after D'antonis run there and then the whole league ended up playing like the Houston Rockets after Danton's stint there and the dude gets no love or credit other than from all the coaches who stole from him. Coaches like Eric Spolstra and Steve Kerr have talked about his importance and influence. He's hands down the most influential coach of the last 20 years and yet has never gotten his dues from the media. Doc Rivers who has never contributed anything to coaching gets a lot more respect and love from the big media personalities like SAS for some reason. Props for pointing out the flaws in one of the most protected coaches by the media in any sport.
hate to say it and I love Stephen A myself, but he does have his racial bias for the black coaches and always tries to convince people that white coaches in the league are privileged with an unfair advantage in getting to coach desirable roster.

Yep, same here. His teams have a long history of chronically underperforming, especially when the going gets tougher in the playoffs. That's clearly a reflection of a COACHING PROBLEM. The lack of fundamental soundness of the players, the weird rotations; those defects were there to be seen ALL ALONG.
What I find most amazing is not the obvious conclusion that DR is a poor coach, but that so many NBA franchises have chosen to ignore the red flags and hire him anyway!

Whenever I see a Doc Rivers team especially in the playoffs, I think of: "how are they gonna blow this game this time?". Like he's had many good teams and yet produced only one championship from them. Something must be wrong if this keeps happening to his teams
And what do those teams have in common after blowing 3-1 leads? Choke Rivers that's who! You can't tell or convince me that after coaching so many talented players and teams that they were always the problem when Choke Rivers all coached them, you know he's the main reason, if not the biggest reason why those teams lost time and again.

Also their GM outside of picking him and Maxey have failed at almost every other pick/trade. Fultz, Simmons, Butler leaving, Bridges traded, whole thing has been a disaster.

He doesn't get transition baskets, he rarely gets deep post position and seals, he always takes a second to survey every time he catches the ball so the defense can recover, he doesn't anticipate double teams and is easily fooled by late doubles, he gets easily frustrated if he isn't scoring, his floor mapping is only okay when he sees doubles
I mean we just watched two teams take him apart. He's a regular season player who is worse in the playoffs year after year. Same with Harden.

Literally in 2020 Clippers vs Nuggets, Jokic exploited Montrezzl Harrel. Yet even after the Nuggets tied the series after being up 3-1, he didnt do anything about it. Also how do you let PG play so poorly for so many minutes. I believe Doc might've had something to do with it since PG cheated on his daughter.

Thank God for Rasheed. Been saying the same thing about Doc. He doesn't seem to be able to make in game adjustments. For example. When he was with the Clippers and he kept double teaming Joker. And Joker was absolutely killing him with backdoor passes and cuts to the basket off of double teams. I was screaming stop doubling Joker! Take your chances on a contested Joker jumps shot over a layp. Full disclosure Sixer fan here watched a majority of thier games this year and if the high pick and roll with Harden and Embid was not working. I couldn't tell what else the hell he was running. He was running a hope strategy as in if the pick and roll isn't working. I hope Maxey can make a three. I watched the Laker game the other night and I noticed how Hamm took Davis off Joker and let Hachimura play him on the perimeter and let Davis come to help after Joker started to dribble and it worked. Joker's only points in the 4th quarter came off free throws. Never seen Doc make such an obvious adjustment. Maybe he has. I Damm sure didn't see it. Doc is a good man we all agree. But he's a bad basketball coach. He was in shock the last game his head just wasn't in the game. I saw a man thinking " what are people going to say if I lose another game 7." Well he doesn't have to wonder anymore.

I believe the tell that we all missed was Danny Ainge willingly trading the rights to Doc to LA. What we saw was that a coach was worth trading for. What we missed is the Clippers were dumb enough to trade for a coach and Ainge didn't think twice.

I have never ever been a fan of Doc and I thank God I have never supported any team Doc coached because I would have had a nervous breakdown 20 years ago. Honestly, I have been bagging Doc for years and years that he is a phony coach and I could never understand why so many people, especially on media like S A Smith keep holding Docs balls like he does with Mark Jackson the man who had a goldmine and has never had a NBA job since. Like the facts don't lie, if you want to fail you simply hire Dic Rivers. It's not like Doc did not have talented players? He had HOF, MVP, All-Stars, Top 3 draft picks, and in 24 years 1 ring and as you pointed out in the video, most of the players did their own thing, so luckily that Boston team was smart enough and had enough talent to not listen to Doc. Doc is the worst investment in the NBA, a team full of bright stars to only have a year wasted year after year. How many game 7 blowouts, how many 3-1 and 3-2 leads were lost. Do you know why Doc got exposed all the time in the playoffs, it's simply because he is a con man, everyone knows by playoff time, it is about making adjustments, and coaches and teams know most of the common actions and plays of opposing teams, it's about substitutions when to take time outs which Doc has no-clue in playoff situations. When you consider Doc is one of the highest-paid coaches, he has a team full of MVPS, he is the worst investment in the history of the NBA. Hire him if you want to fail!

It reminds me of a certain coach tactics called "Bara-Bara system" ; The tactic is simplistic, if the play won't work, let the players filled the gap or used their athletic and talent prowess to complete the play and adjustments which is works a lot in a low level basketball competition but don't work in NBA or world class competition. Docs over reliance in players is his key to his early success but also his demise because of his lack of adjustments made on the spot.

I hadn't veen around the vids for a while. It made me smile to see again a nice ad transition.
The 7-0 run at the start of the 2nd in Sixers - Celtics game 7 was already unforgiveable. He really needed to call timeout after the 5-0 with how well the Celtics were making shots and the way the crowd was getting into it, that Maxey turnover was the pebble that started the avalanche, and it was 95% on Doc not calling a timeout fast enough. I know 5-0 isn't a big run yet but given the scenario it felt like it was, with the Celtics stars both cooking and the Sixers not having gotten much out of either Harden or Embiid yet. Doc needed to get a response out there fast, or at least kill momentum as quickly as possible, and neither happened.
Yes. I've seen that happen before. I came across some old footage of the 1966 playoffs between the Celtics and the Royals. The Royals outplayed Russell's Celtics in the first half, were leading, and looked pretty good doing it, too.
In the 2nd half, the Celtics Russell blocked a silly shot by Adrian Smith, who foolishly went right at Russell (something that the coach should have taught him NEVER to do!) and that got that famous Celtics fast break going for an easy layup at the other end.
It was easy to see what was coming next. Yet, the Royals coach, Jack McMahon, failed to react by calling a timeout. Doing so at that moment would have stopped the Celtics dead in their tracks. But he didn't, and the Celtics began to full court press and harass, causing turnovers, and it worked. They got more fast break points and easy layups, and they blew the Royals off the floor.
Jack McMahon failed his team by letting things get out of control. It must have been very frustrating for the Royals players because THEY were actually the BETTER TEAM that day and could have won that game fairly easily! The Royals had played VERY well the first half and were clearly the better team. The only way Boston was able to crack them was with that damned fast break and a clueless coach! The Royals lost the NBA Eastern Division Semifinals (2-3) versus the Boston Celtics. To this day, I think that with a better coach, they could have won that series.
Sixers gonna choke just as bad next year. Blame Doc all you want now, you're gonna be booing them just the same.
If your players are struggling, you have to game plan around that. Look at Miami. They don't have the most talented roster in the East, but Spoelstra knows how to maximize talent. Doc can't make any adjustments. As soon as the Harden/Embiid pick and roll got figured out by Boston he had nothing else. That's a bad coach

Totally agree. He's not an NBA level coach, clearly. He's substandard. I doubt that he would even make a good college coach. With his meltdowns, I don't think he should even be involved in coaching at all. He just can't control himself.
Honestly, I don't know how Doc Rivers didn't get fired after the infamous 2015 game 6 meltdown.
He was gifted a vintage James Harden playoff performance, 5-20 FG with a 1-7 in the 3rd to help the Clippers build a 13 point lead. I still can't believe how they botched that game.
He still had a lot of goodwill at that point for his leadership during the Sterling debacle. I think he’s probably a decent guy, but not very self aware and obviously not a great coach.

Cp3 could’ve possibly won a chip or at least went further in the playoffs with that clippers team. Amongst other players, that were shorted. This video just broke down everything I have been saying about Doc Rivers for the last ten years in twenty minutes. Doc Rivers I a good regular season coach. He has a voice that everyone in the NBA respects. He is a good person, and he clearly knows the game of basketball. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, Doc Rivers is not the guy you want in your corner. Doc Rivers and Chris Paul are the same person. The only difference between the two is that one is on the court, and the other one is on the side line.
Doc Rivers is the perfect coach for a team that needs to develop its players. He would be the perfect coach for a team like the Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, etc. But if you are an organization looking for a coach to help you get over the hump, Doc Rivers will only stall your franchise into disappointment.

Finally, someone's talking about the real issues in Philly. The issues with their playoff struggles in recent years are as follows. 1. Ownership/Front Office. 2. Coaching (Brown, Rivers) 3. Simmons/bad roster construction. 4. Embiid's/Harden's performances/health in the playoffs. How Doc escapes the heat everywhere he goes is mind blowing. This man made a healthy Kawhi a playoff choker, and he has shown his true colors across several different rosters at this point.
Lost in the analysis of the 76ers Hawks series was that before that Game 7, Philly blew an 18 point second half lead in lieu to a loss in Game 4, and then a 26 point late third/early 4th quarter lead in lieu to a loss in Game 5. They tied the series 3-3 after a rookie Tyrese Maxey hit some big buckets late in that game, so naturally Doc had him on the bench for the veteran George Hill in Game 7 who provided little comparatively. Blown leads and veteran favoritism are signature Doc issues everywhere he's gone. He's a remarkably bad coach for a team that wants to go all the way, and even with how things ended these past playoffs, a lot more of the focus seems to be on Embiid and Harden. While I don't give them a pass, this coach brings out the worst in all of his players and somehow always manages to skate by unaccountable.
Doc seems to benefit from serious cronyism among the media heads and I hope Embiid doesn't get run out of Philly for peanuts over it. I'm still curious to see Embiid operate in a not so overly toxic environment for once. He simply hasn't had the opportunity, regardless of his own individual shortcomings in the playoffs during his career.
While I think that Doc is an upgrade over Adrian Griffin, I'm worried that these same issues will arise in the postseason. He has spent a little time away, so maybe he's had some time to reflect? I don't know, I'm optimistic and extremely concerned all at the same time.

A player coach is an overvalued title because it doesn't seriously matter if you played before what matters is your character relateability and gaining respect from the players to where they'll listen to you.Doc is the example for why player coaches shouldn't be held in high regard because most times them being a former pro has them being in ego contest with current players n they get very prideful.He really needs to sit out for a few years then maybe teams should consider him

Plus, from the moment that Daryl Morrey made that Harden trade, it was clear that Doc is going to be fire if the team can’t make it to at least final.
It was a surprise that Doc wasn’t fired last season.
It’s the fact that he got blown out in game 7, something that happens to Doc too often. + they were up by a few points in game 6 IN Philadelphia. Also, there seems to be a lack of accountability as is obvious from Embiid’s postgame comments. Also also, his lack of adjustments.
Point is, I don’t think it’s just about him losing. It’s the way it happens & the surrounding circumstances & player body languages/culture.
How Rivers is still getting coaching jobs is absolutely insane to me. He’s living off of a championship from 15 years ago that likely would have won with any decent coach. How dumb do GM’s have to be to keep giving this guy jobs when he’s choked damn near every year since he left the Celtics

It feels like the only play Philly ran during the Celtics run was Harden pnr. Harden kept making the right pass to the corner but those shots weren't falling. They absolutely needed a bucket and their best option was PJ and Daniel House corner 3s? They called timeouts but didn't even get a proper ATO set. Just more pnr. At least that was my impression watching it live

I have a friend who was a rookie on a doc coached clipper team and he said he NEVER made any adjustments. Two funny anecdotes:
1. After a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks when they gave up the lead, he came into the locker room and went "well damn Giannis is pretty fucking good isnt he, lets get out of here"
2. Before a play off game an assistant coach had drawn up some game plan stuff on the whiteboard and Pat Bev walked up to the board, erased it, and drew up a new game plan. That team had zero respect for the coaching staff.
Doc was described as a manager, not a coach, and he would never speak in practice. After hearing that, then watching them melt down against the Nuggets, i had zero surprise. Excellent video.

It was quite glaring on many of the Celtics games on defensive drop off since Thibs left for Chicago. Offensively I rarely saw Doc's teams scored on ATOs. I also rarely saw him taking responsibilities after a loss in press conference.

Great video! Coaching in the NBA is very hard, with all the egos and prima donnas to manage, but some definitely do it better than others. Some also do it worse, and get lucky when they have an amazing squad.
