Baltimore Bridge crash: cargo ship suffered critical power failure | BBC News

- Maryland state governor Wes Moore has said that a cargo ship lost power before smashing into one of the columns supporting the landmark Francis Scott Key Bridge in the city of Baltimore, causing its collapse.
Several vehicles were crossing the bridge when the container ship collided with one of its supports. Six people are unaccounted for and a number of vehicles fell into the water.
Officials said the ship suffered a "power issue" and issued a Mayday distress call moments before the crash. Boats and helicopters are part of a huge search and rescue effort searching for the missing people. The authorities said they were part of a construction crew repairing potholes at the time the bridge collapsed.
.
Two people were pulled from the water, with one in a serious condition.
The Singapore-flagged container ship, Dali, struck a support column on the bridge after departing from the terminal at Port Breeze, bound for Sri Lanka.
A US federal government agency said the vessel "lost propulsion" as it was leaving the port. The crew then warned Maryland transport officials of a possible collision, according to an unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report on the incident.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sumi Somaskanda, Gary O’Donaghue and Rebecca Morelle.

Why is the news bashing the crew of the ship? They lost power, tried to call in a may day warning. It's not the crews fault nor the bridges fault just a unavoidable accident.
that ship had many past violations....
We saw some people criticise captain sully on the water landing before the facts were understood, they ended up looking like idiots when it all was finished.
It’s Maersk, the system of Flags of convenience and the charter companies fault for not inspecting or maintaining their ship. It clearly had a massive technical failure. This is what you get when you choose profit over safety. It’s what you get without regulation.
In fact, the mayday call allowed crews to stop traffic which saved many lives
@@lubryce1971 There was an incident in 2016, which was attributed to the local Harbour Pilot - I doubt an Antwerp harbour pilot was onboard in Baltimore! Don't think that qualifies as 'many'.
OK, please feel free to cite relevant history, but otherwise avoid vilifying the crew until the facts are known!
How can a major harbour like this with a massive bridge and giant ships operate without TUG boats ?
Great question ❓
They did have tugboats, but it’s a deeply dredged and well mapped shipping channel. Tugs aren’t needed to avoid the bridge. The tugs take the ships to the center of the channel and pilots take the ships out of the entire Chesapeake Bay under their own power.
Now if for instance a subsidiary of major shipping conglomerate like Maersk doesn’t maintain their ships because they choose profit over safety, things like this can happen.
Olo tug boats must be used till ship hits sea lol brain dead, it's an accident 1 in ? Time , boat loses power and no barriers made strong enough to stop a ship, tug boats would have not made much difference
You clearly witnessed that it can't LOL
It happens in most harbors. Tugs are only useful below 4 knots.

The bridge stood for 50 years. It likely would have stood for another 40-50 at least. There was nothing wrong with the bridge other than the potholes.
i agree that the actual bridge is fine. but, surely it wouldve made sense to design the supports in a way that would stop ships from being able to come into contact with the supports, no? Looking at the supports, they have no base. at least, above water.

Along with the radio message to authorities, was the crew able to sound the horn to directly warn people on the bridge? I haven't seen this mentioned in any reporting and it seems especially relevant to the workers who were on the bridge.
the horn may of been connected to power, but who knows...
This was talked about today on a retired merchant mariner's channel, What's Going on with shipping, it would require the people on the bridge to pretty much instantly divine that the ship horn was sending a message to them & then for them to deduce what the message was. Both points are most unlikely.
Ships horns are only used as a way of warning other ships of their presence.
Or, as an alert to crew members, or in the case of passenger ships, as a way of notifying passengers of any emergencies.
There is no protocol for alerting bridge workers of the imminent danger.
No power means no power. No steerage, no controls. Pilots in control put out mayday calls. What more could you ask???
Ships sound their horns anyway when going underneath a bridge. People may not have taken notice of the horn, especially if they are locals and are accustomed to marine traffic.
Thanks to rescue team for working hard to saving lives. 🙏
I'm impressed with the 3rd shift team of first responders and other port authority employees that reacted quickly to stop traffic and saved many other lives. Also, kudos to the ship captain/pilot that issued a mayday when they realized they lost power. This could've gone way worse.
Sadly, condolensec😢😢😢
All I am saying, don’t crucified the crew just jet, we don’t know, they tried to make the people aware, it is a tragedy, natural forces, currents and lost of engines could really derange the control of the ship.
Correct. I would be just as suspicious of the ship management company’s operational playbook at large.
Pennypinching on parts, skill-training , and operational expenses /preventive maintenance has been the hallmark of the int’l shipping industry over the last decade-plus . it’s a race to the bottom. Some groups have shown themselves to be more cutthroat than others in this regard i.e. the cheaper, the better; if something happens, we are insured, and there’s lots of ways to dilute the blame..
@@pushslice I will look at it all!
Ship's engineer is about the last 24hrs of his life scrutinized like no other. Total power failure doesn't just randomly happen. Blame probably isn't on the pilot or helmsman though.
For such a busy water way the bridge should have impact islands around the bridge supports to absorb the energy of impact from a ship - maybe up to 100m upstream and downstream of the bridge support
@@jjsmallpiece9234sorry but not in the budget other priorities like funding foreign wars and woke agendas.
Why was there NO bumper around the leg supports?
That is the BIG question, 100%. Clearly the Golden Gate and others have massive caissons around their supports.
I remember a similar bridge collapse in oklahoma, where 14 died 20 years ago, surely so large vessels need tug boats support as well as pilots helping❤❤❤
From what I know about the us, this is pretty much guaranteed to be human error from top to bottom.
Maintenance failures, cost cutting, cutting corners, breaches by the captain and/or staff on the ship, all that good stuff.
When you put profits before safety, you'll eventually lose on both fronts.
And drowning isn't a nice way to go. I can only hope the debris did the job quickly before the water did it slowly.

The MV Dali is a large Panamax container ship with a total dead weight tonnage of almost 200,000 tons. Yes, that is correct, actually 196,000 tons. It is chartered by Maersk Shipping. It has one 56,000 hp diesel engine to drive the single shaft, but it does have several very large engines for electrical power. That everything would shut down at the same time, then come back online at the same time is inconceivable. These ships have multiple redundancy that rivals aircraft. BUT, 200k tons moving even a brisk walk of say, 3 1/2 mph would have kinetic energy most people cannot even understand: 213,947,229 ft/lbs to be exact. So, yeah, bringing down this bridge was nothing. The ship didn't carry through very far as it looks like the pilots had slammed the engine into full reverse but far, far too late to stop the ship.
So sad😔
Very through reporting.
so the ship relayed a mayday call to the land, they got cars off the bridge, but the construction workers couldnt leave? sounds like the construction company screwed these guys
I dont think you understand how large that bridge was. They cant just teleport off of it. They didnt get the cars off they stopped traffic from going on. If you were already ON the bridge it was too late obviously.
Not enough time to evacuate from the center span
Police were busy blocking the highway entrances to the bridge. They didn’t have time (about 2 minutes) to notify anybody already on the bridge

The ship looks as if it has seen better days even before the accident. I think maintenance is going to be a key factor in this
The ship passed 2 inspections last year. The last inspection was done by in an American port by American authorities September last year and it passed without any problems. The next time the ship was scheduled for maintainance this year was to be in June
Recent bridges - at least with the Store Bæltsbroen in Denmark - there are an Island around each of the main pillars to take the brute force of an impact from a ship.
That’s the thing that shocked me when I saw this story. It seems crazy that a ship could so easily strikes the supports and essentially take the entire bridge down in seconds.
Who was steering the ship?
Why hasn’t the names been published?
We can see from video it had power before it hit.
I always thought ships that large were escorted by tugboats....🤔🙏💔
while leaving the dock yes, but they had reached the area that ships go under their own power. the tugboats disconnected their lines not long before this I believe, so there was probably little warning from the ships systems that the power failure was going to occur

The MV Dali is a Singapore registered container ship. I wonder if it was even up to code. They said it was actually flagged in Chile for faulty gauges.
If the port was so critical, and the consequences of bridge strike so catastrophic, it begs to wonder why there was no requirement for pilot tugs to guide large vessels through the narrows.
