People were complaining about Nintendo games being bland and soulless during the 3DS and Wii U era, and I can say with full confidence that we are not even close to that level right now. You're right about Switch UI and performance, but sticking strictly to that "charm" when it comes to games, it is 1000% the rose-tinted glasses that are talking. There have _always_ been stinkers when it comes to that charm.

the last year or two of every nintendo system has always been kind of barren and “safe” in order to maximize on final sales before the new console is announced and released. also have you looked at the release schedule they had in 2018? it was mostly wii u ports that had a lot less work put into them than the remakes and remasters we are seeing this year. also i saw another comment saying this, but maybe you just aren’t into nintendo games anymore? i can kind of relate in that aspect as i used to be somebody who would buy pretty much any nintendo game that came out at launch. me from a few years ago would’ve bought princess peach showtime the day it came out but nowadays there’s so much to play from all these different companies that spending that money on that small of a game just isnt worth it to me right now. i think 2023 was one of the best years for the switch with tears of the kingdom, mario wonder, and pikmin 4 all being 9 or 10/10s for me. however this year is really slow so far which makes complete sense. however you pretty much already know this cause unlike most commenters i actually watched until the end of the video. i think the first year of the switch 2 is gonna blow our socks off so im excited for it too!

Has Nintendo lost it's soul and charm?
    Yes and no.
God, I hope the developers of Nintendo (including the developers of Splatoon) decides to start making awesome games again without any deadlines like how they did with Super Mario Brothers Wonder.
Also, I think Nintendo is saving the magical stuff for the next-gen Nintendo console.
I hope the next-gen Nintendo console gets involved with backwards compatibility, cross-gen games, Mii Maker/Plaza, Mii-Verse (even though I've never been into Mii-Verse, I've heard most people say Mii-Verse is awesome, and it'll be awesome if Nintendo decides to bring back the Miiverse for the next-gen Nintendo console), free online service, background music (for both startup/main menu and E-Shop theme), customizable background theme (including the music), increased frame-rates/performance/storage space, stylized graphics/UI, better battery-life, StreetPass, and last but not least, functional amiibo support.
However, the three things I'm worried about for the next-gen Nintendo console is Denuvo/DRM, lack of backwards compatibility, and digital only console.
Also, stop buying remakes/remasters of retro triple AAA games (including the Nintendo ones) and instead, start buying indie games and AA games.

    • @Bg2006
      @Bg2006  개월 전 +1

Genuinely I agree with this so much
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if deadlines are really hurting.
As I said, near the end of the video I really hope this is a speed bump near the end of the switches life and that whatever comes next is just like what happened at the start of the switch
As for remakes though in the case of games you love or want to experience again but if you don’t care just ignore it (like I did with Mario vs dk)

I mean I wouldn't say their worse, just more casualized. The reason for the Switch's blandness is probably to come off more, "mature" as many thought that Nintendo was just for kids. And tbf for the remakes and remasters, their 10-20 years old, I doubt many people play them(beyond the arcade cabinet based on 2) so to most people, these are essentially new games to them(only not as big and more obvious).

But I disagree with the idea that Nintendo is just for kids. They make games that while being appropriate for all ages but have depth and ideas behind them. And for the remakes, I’m all for him however, I feel that there needs to be more of a difference and a balance between releases.

Cool video, but your points feel detached and disconnected from each other, the video is very sporadic with what it lists as an issue. I'm mainly very confused on why you're bringing up 2nd party games so much when talking about a 1st party company. I agree with some of your points however calling the blowing into the mic stuff more than a "gimmick" and calling it a mechanic is odd.
Remakes are not and never will be video game preservation.
Princess Peach Showtime is out now so I don't know when this video's script was made.
Good-Feel created Princess Peach showtime not Nintendo.
Monolith Soft creates Xenoblade not Nintendo.
It is not Nintendo's fault that Game Freak is so incompetent.
Talking about the Nintendo OS design when the video is titled games and going in-between points of what you're talking about is really confusing and comes off as unrelated issues.

      1) this is one of the first videos I scripted so that’s likely why in addition I have ADHD so it’s probably why.

      3) I personally consider 2nd party studios as under the general “Nintendo” Company or Brand
      4) scripts take time to make as well as edit the video began production prior to the release of Showtime
      5) the only point I mentioned Xeno was that it was being held back by the switch despite monoliths best efforts
      6) though game freak aren’t very good at optimizing their games

I believe this lacks a bit of perspective. I'm old enough to remember when the NES came out, and it wasn't even my first console. That would have been the Intellivision. Nintendo has been pretty consistent about their video games for half a century. That being they aren't afraid to try new things. And they genuinely care about the products they are making.
I have my criticisms. I played Metroid Dread recently, and it suffered from the same issue that Zero Mission did, an over reliance on backtracking as compared to Super Metroid. This is obvious a personal opinion and doesn't really make the game bad. I'm glad to have played it. My criticisms extend to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom as being weaker 'Zelda' games. Where a Zelda game has a certain formula that dates back to the 1980s. But as stand alone games they are some of the most fun and entertaining games I've played in this decade.
Objectively Nintendo is the best they've ever been with their first party games. Subjectively if they are slacking off, to what are they being compared to? Who are they slipping behind? I don't have an answer for that simply because I don't believe it. And this is coming from an old grognard who enjoys watching NES streams over newer games. Someone who routinely still plays NES and SNES titles. Someone who has spent several hundred dollars to modify their NES with enhanced capabilities such as RAM (being limited to 512KB doesn't let one play Rogue Dawn or Legend of Link, need 2MB at least), Storage, and Outputs. So I am very much aware of my nostalgia tinted glasses.
The newer stuff is good, bar none. If you look at the minute details, the amount of thought, care, and fun that the developers is there to see. If you're rushing through these games, just trying to get the rush of beating them. Its easy to miss. But just walking to a random part of Tears of the Kingdom for example, and looking around in the small area you might be in, you can see there is a story to be told. Even if there is no NPC to talk to, no book to read, no quest objective to show a cutscene, you can see the environmental story telling in each object that is placed.
I don't see that in most Non-Nintendo games. Where they randomly place tables, chairs, debris, plants, or whatnot randomly or have a computer procedurally generate it.

@@Rediscool9 Lol yeah I felt very critical making that comment but at the same time, I do like a lot of things about Wonder as well. For example, I love the fact that the music is orchestrated for a 2D Mario game since we’ve only had mostly castle and tower themes being orchestrated in NSMB games. The Wonder effects can be…kinda fun. I think the fact that lots of them are just things like turning into another enemy and running away or dodging something kind of basic is what made it feel a little underwhelming for me. I was expecting some actual wacky stuff like how the trailers described the Wonder effects. But a lot of the other ones are fun and challenging though. I like the difficult levels because I’m a pro at Mario games, so it only took me about 5 tries to beat that advanced colored block switching level (whatever it’s called). Maybe I was also let down since people were saying this was going to be a hard game, but then I found out it was too easy, with airships not having boss battles and the only boss battle being Wonder Bowser Jr. aside from Wonder Bowser. I was hoping for some epic Koopaling battles but instead we just got the same character changing up the stage in a few different ways. I liked the game but I jut couldn’t really say it was better than some other ones I’ve played before. I mean I am a retro gamer for the most part so I guess that has something to do with it as well lol

I don`t see how nintendo games have no soul, TOTK was still pretty inoovate and unique as a zelda an dopen wolrd game, Mario Wonder is worlds of different compared to the NSMB games, and the Mario Kart 8 DLC lazy? Eh kinda at first but now? Graphics got better and they added 8 characters which they didn`t even have to do or promised at first! That isn`t lazy at all. Like for a Mario game that isn`t bad.
And what other games are coming up with ideas that Nintendo would do? You just seem too vague here really.
And like....remasters and remakes aren`t replacing new games but with the Switch now....things may be changing so game releases may be slowing down for now.
TOTK with it`s landscape and mechanics does have a unique identity. Sure it shares it`s main map with BOTW but the sky islands and the depths and the changes it makes to the main map makes it stand out, that`s like saying Pokemon BW2 doesn`t have it`s own identity despite how today it`s considered one of the best Pokemon games of all time even if it reuses Unova`s maps from BW1 even when it is changed.
Like TOTK isn`t just BOTW 2 it has a different story, different characters, enviorment changes, more modes of transportation, etc.
The Wii also slowed down in it`s final years too, it`s not really anything new with a Nintendo console at all, even like the N64 was like that too.

To be honest, you sound very ignorant in this video. Some of your points don't make any sort of sense, you're using third party games on Switch that aren't directly developed by Nintendo and their partners. You're contradicting yourself constantly, and some of your points are grasping.
Has Nintendo lost some charm? They probably have. But they still maintain plenty of that Nintendo charm we all know and love. You bring up the Wii, which yes, it had a lot of charm, but most of the stuff was just fun little distractions. They were fun to have, but nothing you'd spend hundreds of hours in. The Switch is by all accounts, a game console. It's all about the games, which is what a console should be about. Yes, the UI is bland, but everything is fast and snappy. The Wii U had a lot of charm, but the OS was slow and clunky.
You say Super Mario Bros. Wonder feels empty. How? It's the best thing to happen with 2D Mario since the first New Super Mario Bros. game. Mario was becoming generic, the sequels all felt like just a New Super Mario Bros. game for that system. And it infected the entire Mario series. 3D Mario was becoming more 2D-like, with 3D Land and 3D World basically being 3D NSMB games, the Mario Party and Paper Mario series undergoing huge departures, with Mario Party 9 looking like it took the visuals of NSMB Wii. Mario was in a rut during the Wii U and 3DS era.
Besides, Nintendo and indies, nobody else is really pushing the industry forward. In fact, the industry seems to be imploding on itself. Nintendo's output far outclasses Sony and Microsoft, they've done a good job reviving a lot of dormant series, like Metroid, Pikmin, and even bringing back series you'd never think they'd even consider revisiting like Endless Ocean. And series like Mario Party, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and Paper Mario return to their roots. What's Microsoft doing? Buying up companies and still can't get good quality games out. Sony? They've become the walking simulator and Marvel company. Sony has a ton of IP that are just sitting in cold storage while they're milking The Last of Us to death.
When it comes to Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, that's squarely on Game Freak and the Pokemon Company. Apparently, TPC is the one who calls the shots, while Nintendo just publishes the games. If Game Freak were competent, S/V would look and run pretty well on the Switch.
Are there issues now when it comes to some of Nintendo's games? Yes. I'm not a fan of how Nintendo will release a Mario Sports game severely lacking in content, only to "finish the game" by adding free updates months down the road and acting like it's bonus content. They did it with New Horizons, they did it with Arms, and that's part of the reason why Arms fell off. There wasn't enough content there to keep people engaged for long. Nintendo Switch Sports, a botched revival of Wii Sports that was entirely devoid of any personality. There's stuff like the shoddy build quality of the Joy-Con. But those are things they can improve/fix in the next system.
Nintendo's done a good job with the Switch when it comes to many of their games. And 2023 and this year showed Nintendo has been listening to the fans.
Have Nintendo games gotten worse? Yes and no. In some ways, they've dipped in quality. The Mario Sports games are putrid for what I stated above with the free update approach. I know a lot of Animal Crossing veterans hate New Horizons for the direction it took. There are some genuinely bad games like Nintendo Switch Sports. But all Nintendo systems have their bad games. The Wii had Wii Music and the very controversial Metroid Other M, the 3DS had Paper Mario: Sticker Star, and the Wii U had Mario Party 10, amiibo Festival, Ultra Smash, Devil's Third, Star Fox Zero, and Color Splash. The Pokemon games can be blamed on Game Freak and TPC.
But Nintendo games have also gotten better. Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Metroid Dread, Pikmin 4, Kirby and The Forgotten Land, Luigi's Mansion 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, New Pokemon Sanp, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom, Astral Chain, Fire Emblem: Three Houses & Engage, Mario Party Superstars, etc.
