Ichigo initially got his powers from Rukia, then he lost it when he fought Byakuya... Then he got his own Soul reaper powers, then he lost it while fighting Aizan, then he almost got his powers back by Fullbring, then he got his powers from the gotei 13. i wouldn't say he got his powers handed to him.

You gotta watch HxH. You might think it's a typical shonen anime with full of sunshines but it's get dark as hell startin' episode 30 or so, you gotta love it. But you should watch at the beginning.
