Hidden in the microverse all around you, there is a merciless war being fought by the true rulers of this planet, microorganisms. Amoebae, protists, bacteria, archaea and fungi compete for resources and space. And then there are the strange horrors that are viruses, hunting everyone else. Not even being alive, they are the tiniest, most abundant and deadliest beings on earth, killing trillions every day. Not interested in resources, only in living things to take over. Or so we thought.
It turns out that there are giant viruses that blur the line between life and death - and other viruses hunting them.

@@prashanthbaliga78 Yeah, but all C-based languages use that. It's an incredibly basic syntax for an if-statement, to the point that even Excel uses it. The fact that you assumed that it's JavaScript automatically says that you barely even code and use other languages. Keep coding, kiddo.
So if these โGirusโ things target amoebas, but seem to ignore human cells. Could they be used to treat โbrain-eating amoebaโ cases?
That's what I was thinking
probably, but the problem is the brain-eating amoeba kills you very fast after it's detected, so even if you unleash the GIRUS, it's going to be difficult for them to take all the amoeba out in time.
@@eVill420 what if tons are released into your bloodstream so that when inflammation occurs the giruses flood out too? or maybe incorporating them as a part of the immune system by having the mucus glands also make the giruses safely and incorporate them into the mucus lining the nose
@@Jermain-cz4bh maybe it's possible, but I don't think the Giruses would infect them fast enough, it probably take a few hours for the virus to incubate in the amoeba, giving them enough time to multiply and still kill you. if you somehow injected them in the early stages though, that would work

Also: kind of fascinating that with large organisms you'll usually see the bigger hunting the smaller. But on the microscopic level, it often happens the other way around; with smaller things hunting larger things.
I mean it does also happen on the large scale, our most prolific killers are microorganisms like bacteria and viruses. It's more like to gain energy you need to eat something smaller and to reproduce you need to infect something larger.

I've always been amazed by the comparison between the two extremes in size - on the one hand we have space which is so massive and unexplored and incomprehensibly expansive, and on the other hand there is a whole other micro-world which is so small but yet equally unexplored and incomprehensibly expansive. And then there's our normal world just floating in between
AND there's so much we don't know about our normal world too. I mean this for both individual people and for humans as a collective.
And how much of the ocean's depths are unexplored
one of my favorite comparisons is that there are more numbers between 1 and 0 then there are positive integers. This is the concept of larger infinities.
Yep
You got the dimensions wrong.

Reminds me of what my Professor said when he saw that we were utterly confused about something that fails clear classification.
"Why is it so confusing you ask? Because Mother Nature doesn't care how humans classify things."
Or to quote NDT; โthe universe is under no obligation to make sense to youโ
9:19
This is a perfect representation of what I am talking about, just like our misclassification of light as being a particle/wave so too, have we labeled a natural cellular process's secretion a seperate entity attacking the cells.
How do things without a brain move in reaction to something without it being a chemical reaction
Because classifying things is stupid at its core. I mean, it's very useful, but when you look at it every living thing is just a marginal variation from another one. All the marginal variations make complexity. So it appears that a flower is something completely different from a giraffe (and it is), so you can classify them. But considering time and numbers, it's all about marginal variations. We think at life like it's a mathematical discrete group, but it's more like a mathematical continuous group
I first learned about virophages by accident. I was taking a microbiology class and just ran into the term by accident and out of curiosity I looked more into it and put my homework aside for the time being.
OOOOH I also love it when we first discover something we couldn't identify before and then slowly realize that they're EVERYWHERE and always have been! Extracellular vesicles, exosomes, and apoptotic bodies are excellent examples.

8:09 Aw man I love this meme reference so much, just goes to show that Kurzgesagt isn't all storytelling and science, but they also like poking fun at pop culture.
It honestly sounds like the plot of some Sci-Fy movie/story. Its like Life wanted to be its own thing, so Nature gave it the ability to life. But at the same time, the Universe wanted everything to be the same, so it made viruses to make everything return to being very dead. At least, that's my take on viruses and cells.
EDIT: Found this channel back in 2012, and have kept up with it since. I love your videos, and they never fail to make me want more. I love what yall do.
Tell me you haven't missed the : "What is life?", "Birdy don't hurt me..." . That is magic!
I spit my food out when I saw that that was genius
I have.
If only we Haddaway to kill these Giruses...
... no more!
Let me see what you have!
A knife!
That one was there too
"Imagine a mouse hijacking your insides to make more mice."
WHY!?
Because that's basically what a virus is.
It's like a mouse that goes inside you, hijacks you & makes you explode with a 1000 mice coming out.
Why not
MOUSE PARTY **POP**
thatโs how some spiders are born
wear a mask to sleep.
Bird: What is life
Virus: Birdy don't hurt me
did anybody notice that in every
kurzgesagt video the ape in the intro changes what he holds depending on the video
I can just imagine how much effort they have put in this video. Hats off one of the greatest animation learning channel.

Every time I watch a Kurzgesagt video, I feel like I learned so much only to forget everything a few minutes after.
he's right you know
then take a note so you can remind it later
Yeah I can relate..
I still remember how the immune system works!
Thats okay. It will be stored in your brain and when the time comes it will be triggered to be sent into the surface of your brain as reference.
Wow! This is soooooooo inspiring, so inspiring that I don't even know a single word in this 11 minutes and 9 seconds long video (actually doesn't include the Brilliant stuff but I'm just way too lazy to cut it out)!
honestly even if i downloaded these id pay you 5 bucks every time i watched one, thats how much i love your content

I'm a microbiology student and always felt down because of the employment issues in my major, but these discoveries and news always bring me backup. There's so much yet to be discovered/explained i love it.
You can have your own lab!
@Conor Eliot do you eat legacy or food?
you kind of need to stay as your profs lab rat for 2 years after graduating, though things are surprisingly fine if you manage to hold on to it
@@tanvorn9323 lmao good one
Youโll be able to find a job bro, just be ready to relocate
โBut how do you learn to look at the world like a scientist?โ
