46 years ago (when I was 20) a man punched me in the arm as I was walking toward the building where I worked. I always wondered if something like that had happened to other people. Glad I wasn't punched in the face.

Did you hit back? I'm tiny and old but i would have hit back before even giving any thought to it and never figured that out about myself. A youngster tossed a firecracker in between my legs while walking down the street he was close behind me with two other boys and without thought I turned and punched him in the gut. Never punched anyone before! He gasped and the three of them looked shocked. I said, " yeah, go tell your mama. I'll help you do it". They took off and never saw them again

When I was a kid, I read a short science fiction story. The premise of the story was that things had gotten so bad for women that it had become normal policy for them to have one of their hands removed and replaced with a gun. One of the things was that it was so hard for her to get used to not having a hand. But also, she was attacked and stopped the guy from doing whatever. That always pops up in my head when I hear about this terrible stuff.
That story sounds nuts ! There are guns you can wear strapped to your forearm under your sleeve, as seen in certain movies ? It sounds criminal to cut one’s hand off !

The suspect looks like he's taken a few blows to the face himself. From this short video it looks like all the victims have been attractive young women. Whoever is doing this is a coward. I hope the next time anyone tries to do this that they won't see what's coming from either their intended target or someone their same size trying to protect her and stop this random violence.

Yep, in the age where women were wearing hats and using hat pins to protect themselves. A law was passed restricting the length of hat pins to prevent them from being deadly or an effective weapon of self defense basically.

We need to vote out people in the NY Counsel. The NY Counsel members are the ones making the laws, and these people are making NYC more dangerous.
Elections are coming up soon for NY Counsel votes. Also the NY Senate elections are also coming up, so its time to vote out those people too.
But most importantly, make sure everyone votes out the current sitting NY Counsel members that are in office right now.

America spends more on cops than France and Germany spend on their entire militaries COMBINED! America has more prisoners in total, more prisoners per capita, more prisons, and far harsher sentences than every other western democracy as well. If you even spent five minutes actually researching this, you would quickly understand that it has been proven, beyond any doubt, that more cops and harsher sentences do not lower crime.

This news story makes it out to be only women on the receiving end, but things like this have occurred to everyone for quite some time now.
This could just be an extension of the knock out game / TikTok challenge, or just random attacks. It could be racially motivated, or crazy people. We just don't have that much information yet.

its not just the attack but the trauma that it leaves behind.
i was once attacked by this woman on the streets and ever since then everytime i see a strange woman walk towards me i start to hyperventilate.
it continued for a couple of weeks. and just cause of that incident, doesn't mean i will not go out into the streets anymore,
i still had to go out in the streets despite the incident, the earth is not gonna stop rotating just cause i got attacked on the streets
but the fear that goes through my body while being on the streets.

As a young teenage girl, an Asian-American, this is so scary! My Korean friend was almost assaulted as well. She said it was a colored man. I do not think all blk men are evil or bad, but women just need to be careful around them, and be alert/vigilant when you are near them.
Teachers, friends and seniors in the community recommends girls to take self-defense classes but I don't think that works as most of those attacks are either done by groups of men or sucker punch attacks from behind.
You don’t think you need to be careful around white men? White men do the same and have the power to get away with it.
Honesty like this needs to be more common. These are our lives after all, these attacks aren't just targeting white people, they're impulsive and target all other minorities in this country too

You may be too feeble to remember that when Stop and Frisk were enacted crime went way down . Profiling is an amazing and effective way to lower crime. It's only logical that, if a certain ethnic community commits 64% of all serious crime, then that group needs to be scrutinised and maybe leaned on a bit.

Before I even started looking at the comments I knew how sadly predictable it would be. Sure enough there is a bunch of victim-blaming and fantasies about how you woulda this and you woulda that. Even the report its self was like, 'dOnT bE lOoKiNg At YoUr PhOnE.' Women can literally just be walking down the street, minding their own business, get punched in the face for no reason and people still tell them what they shouldn't have been doing. Do people understand what a surprise attack is? The attacker intentionally catches you by surprise and then immediately runs. Go ahead, tell yourself that you wouldn't be reeling physically and mentally in the few moments that you have to react or that you could never be caught by surprise so you can tell yourself you are superior to these women. These women are doing their part to catch the person who did this to them. They know what to do and they are doing it.
Edit: To be clear, I'm not against self-defense. I'm against framing self-defense in a victim-blaming way. Carry what you need to carry but don't tell yourself that it's always going to work and you would never be them. Give them some respect because courage is not always shown the same way.
