I've always wondered why the 40mm hasn't been upgraded from the old L/60 to the newer L/70. It adds velocity, has newer ammo, and fires faster, among other things.
Because besides a few countries in Europe, NATO especially the United States wants to move away from that 40mm system entirely as it finds it to be redundant and outdated. The gun itself is large for the calibre compared to 30 or 35mm and provides little improvement on the amount of explosive filler it has. Also there are very few companies creating new and improved smart fuses for the 40mm as opposed to the 30 or 35mm which also helps because NATO does love standardized weapons. They do what America does
@@Austin-cx2xeBut GDLS(General Dynamics Land Systems=sub company of Boeing) has developed 50mm Bushmaster cannon. it use same casing of 30mm but only expand bullet to 50mm. they want more fire power. they adjsusted it to A.I. robot battle machines.
@@Austin-cx2xe I suppose, but the 40mm Bofors is still a platform used the world over, so I don't see it going out of fashion anytime soon. The L/70 is just a logical upgrade from the L/60. Otherwise they could replace it with a 40mm CTA gun or something similar, as a mid-caliber gun is important to have on the AC-130.
