This was basically that season's play-in game for the #4 spot in the CFP. With both teams having easy schedules the rest of the way after this, the winner would be in the drivers' seat for that final spot while the loser would be on the outside looking in. And that's exactly how the rest of the season played out.

Oregon was knocked out of the top 10/15 by Stanford. Iowa plays Penn State this week which means one of those two will be knocked out of the top 6. So if UC wins next week they will be #5.
