Ed, Edd n Eddy is a legacy show for Cartoon Network that left a personal impact on my while growing up. But something also just as memorable about Ed, Edd n Eddy is the shockingly weird way it ended and how it changed after its renewal.

I remember how they built the movie up with a massive weekend marathon event called “Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show Weekend Marathon” where CN aired nothing but Ed, Edd’n Eddy episodes in the order they came out before capping it off with the premier of Big Picture Show. That entire weekend I didn’t touch a single video game, woke up early and watched every episode of that marathon.

This is a somewhat embarrassingly recent discovery of mine, but the final confrontation w/ Eddy's brother actually calls back to an earlier scene in the movie. When the Eds are entering the cow field, they reference Wizard of Oz w/ Eddy telling Ed he needs a brain, Ed telling Eddy to have a heart, and Double D telling himself to have courage.
When facing Eddy's brother, Double D showed courage by standing up to him, Ed showed brains by removing the bolt from the door to knock him out, and Eddy showed heart by admitting his wrongdoings and apologizing to everyone.
(also yes thank you for pointing out the movie did the whole "protagonists fight/break up before the climax" trope so well by having them immediately resolve the issue within the same scene. like we all know they're gonna make up anyway so just get to it lol)

    • @bunnyben5607
      @bunnyben5607 2 년 전 +129

Funny the amount of wizard of oz parallels here, as Eddy's brother can be thought of as their version of the wizard. The wizard was even shown to be somewhat of a con artist in the original too, as the group had whatever they desired all along, and Eddy's brother was a con artist who the three aspired to be, believing he somehow had the traits they were missing.

Then the tension is gone and it’s cathartic. Eddy makes himself vulnerable to Edd and apologizes, which is something you rarely see in these kinds of shows and which is why it feels so significant

that confrontation with Eddy's brother always gets me emotional, all those small details throughout the show about how great he was, and how much admiration he had for him, and then making that be an essential plotpoint to the series finale, and then finally seeing him in person..... like as if it was coordinated from the start/ was intentionally designed to be the way it was and I personally feel like it's as close to perfection as it should it be for a children's show.

The big picture show finale was such an amazing way for the series to end. It felt like it naturally addressed every single thing that needed following up on. Eddy grows a lot as a person, and he arguably needed it most. We see his brother. And after being an outcast for so long, the Ed's are finally accepted by the rest of the cul-de-sac. Everything was wrapped up exactly how you'd hoped it would. Probably one of the absolute best cartoon finales ever produced.

  • @TheCommenterDragon

I still remember when i first heard that "Take This Ed And Shove It" was originally going to be the series finale for EENE, and i'm honestly glad that the series ended with "Big Picture Show" instead because as much as i liked "Take This Ed And Shove It" the idea of the series ending with the Ed's as adults felt kinda not right because you know they were made as kids for a reason therefore on some level it was only right to have the show end with them as kids imo at least.

    • @Du-yw1pz
      @Du-yw1pz 2 년 전 +46

right exactly. Plus not only that but if it also would've ended on "Take this Ed and Shove it" then the series would've ended very darkly and grim instead of the happy ending that we got from "Big Picture Show"
And also we would've never gotten to seen the Eds get accepted into the Kids' group, the physical appearance of Eddy's brother, and Eddy's character growth and development.
Yes Season 5 may have been the weakest season of the show but it still comes to show how there's always light at the end of a tunnel.

@@Du-yw1pz the closure was nice versus take this Ed and shove it, for finally concluding on something that had been in the works for ten years - the eds to be a part of the cul-de-sac. I personally prefer take this ed and shove it as the first four seasons were all about the eds getting the short end of the stick. It makes sense and seems fitting in a way that the shows reality would be people reminiscing on the beginning of their lives as they are close to the end of it. It certainly is dark, but was fitting for the Ed boys at the time, for me anyway.

I know many think "Take This Ed And Shove It" is a dark and sad ending....But am I the only one who finds it oddly wholesome? Like, I get it...Eddy is old and misses his childhood, that's sad...But think about it. The Eds are in their 90s, but never lost each other. They were always outcast and knew what it was like to be alone, and had bad home lives. But, they always had each other. Meanwhile, here they are now, presumable never have left each other's side. They're 90+ years old and they still were inseparable and life never tore them apart, even through teenage years and adulthood. Finally, the episode ends with the three friends, still united after decades...Having a good ol' laugh together. That's really heartwarming In my opinion. For as much as they fought and bickered...This finale implies that Ed, Edd and Eddy truly had a bond nothing could break.

According to the theory, the children of the cul-de-sac each hail from different eras spanning the early 1900s to the early 2000s. This would explain why the year for the show is very hard to pinpoint, with multiple anachronisms present, and also why there aren't any adults in the show (although you do catch a glimpse of one every now and then).
Rolf arrived first from the 1900s, the theory goes. His family had moved to Peach Creek in order to establish a farm on its land. Rolf died around 1903 when his family's farm animals stampeded and trampled him. This was the supposed reason as to why he only has one cow, one goat, a few pigs, and a few chickens (not enough animals to cause a fatal stampede) in the afterlife.
Johnny 2x4 came to the Cul-de-sac not too long after Rolf's death. Having no friends, Johnny took a marker and drew a face on a piece of wood, and dubbed it Plank. He died in 1922 after fighting a long battle with tuberculosis, 6 years before the discovery of penicillin. He took his friend, Plank, with him in the afterlife since he was the last thing that he saw in life before he died. Purgatory would also explain Plank's occasional sentient behavior, which is most notably demonstrated in the movie.
Eddy came next. He was born in New York but eventually moved to Peach Creek during the Great Depression era. Always trying to get a quick buck, he always set up scams to get money from the Cul-de-sac kids in an effort to escape the poverty he spent his whole life in. Eddy didn't have a proper father figure since his real father abandoned him and his mother shortly after he was born. With this, came the big bro he adored and idolized so very much despite the latter's abusive nature. After one of his scams went awry, Eddy was chased by the swindled children of the Cul-de-sac, and ran to the lake and jumped into it. Eddy ended up drowning in that lake, and he soon joined the other deceased children in the afterlife. Even though he was no longer alive, Eddy still tried to chase after the "Almighty dollar" by continuing his swindling nature in the afterlife.
Ed and Sarah were the next to arrive at the Cul-de-sac. Their father had died fighting in WWII, and as a result, their mother became distant and disconnected. To cope, Sarah developed her bossy attitude, trying to fill the role their parents used to fill before their father died and their mother stopped caring. Conversely, Ed shut the world out and delved into the fantasy worlds of comic books and monster movies, which exploded in popularity during and after WWII, in order to escape his unhappy life. They both died in a freak car accident in 1953, thus joining the past kids in death.
Nazz was born in the 1960s era to hippie parents. Described as a flower child, she was a rather flirtatious young girl who would always act that way towards the male children of the neighborhood. In the summer of '79, a serial killer escaped from a local asylum made his way into her house and raped and murdered her along with her entire family.
Edd/Double D was born in the 70s when preparing to attend college from a young age became the societal norm expectation, and was raised by very strict, controlling, emotionally distant parents. They pushed him to succeed academically and to be perfectly clean and neat. He is believed to have died as a result of a gas leak causing an explosion with the Bunsen burner from his chemistry set.
Kevin was born around the early 1980s. He was born to a broken-down house, and he also had an abusive father who was poorly-educated and his mother had passed away when he was a year old. Because of his situation at home, Kevin would act his frustration out on the other children of the Cul-de-sac, becoming a bully to cope with his repressed anger. His fascination with his bike fits right in with the birth of the popular X-Games in 1995. One night in the winter of '99, his father fatally beat him in a fit of drunken rage, and he died while he was on his way to the hospital. His father was then convicted of his murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison. When Kevin entered into the afterlife, he re-imagined his father as loving and that he would shower him in gifts. He still kept his bullying ways in the afterlife, however.
Jimmy was the last child to enter into the Cul-de-sac. He was born in the early 1990s, and was diagnosed with leukemia. He never associated with the other Cul-de-sac children, because his parents believed he was too frail to be around the other kids, and he remained bed-ridden for the remainder of his life because of this fact. After fighting a difficult battle with his leukemia, Jimmy eventually succumbed to his illness, and soon the Cul-de-sac Purgatory was complete.
The Kankers were different from the other neighborhood children. It is believed that they are actually demons that were sent to the Cul-de-sac to torment the souls of the remaining children who didn't cross over to Heaven. The Kankers are the only characters with normal-colored tongues, which would seem to indicate that they are not dead, and that therefore, they must be something different. Surprisingly, the Kankers are attracted to the Eds for unknown reasons. However, one common guess is that they are the weakest-willed children of the Cul-de-sac, or because they each symbolize a certain Deadly Sin.

It just goes to show Danny and his team were masters of their craft, creating a show that is just as smart as it is stupid and understanding what they could accomplish with it. It would be really cool if you covered Code Lyoko. It was a show that appeared on magusi back in the early 2000s. Centered around a group of board school kids who find a factory harboring a supercomputer virus that can manipulate reality in hopes to destroy it. The kids are sent to a virtual world to deactivate towers that are causing havoc in the real world all while trying to bring a girl from Lyoko into the real world. I watched this show as a kid, but grew out of the target audience after a couple seasons. I remember my freshman year of college turning on the T.V. and seeing the movie airing and was shocked the show was still on the air. Not because it wasn't good enough to run that long, but just because kids' cartoons generally don't have such a long lifespan (especially back then).
Ed, Edd n Eddy is quite possibly the only cartoon whose premiere I remember being super excited about. No idea why, but Cartoon Network's promotions for it really caught my attention. The night it was supposed to premiere, though, we had a family event at my aunt's. However, the adults were nice enough to let me break away and go watch it in the other room because they knew how much I wanted to see it.

Jordan you have to talk about the Anime opening.
It obviously comes after the end of the show as you see Captain Melon Head, returning as The Gourd for his revenge as the Kankers tear through the Cul-da-sac.
a comment on that video sums it up perfectly:
"I see this as the natural progression after The Big Picture Show. The Kankers, having had their way with Eddys Brother, have now joined forces and returned to the cul-de-sac to wreak havoc upon the kids who opposed them, Eddys Brother for revenge, the Kankers for the sake of chaos. Along the way, The Gourd, a fallen hero-turned-villain and now an outcast, uses this chaos as an opportunity to seek revenge against those who he used to call his friends.
The Eds, having finally been accepted by the rest of the kids, rise up as defenders of the cul-de-sac, with all of their jury-rig science, brute strength, snidely cunning, and the help of ancient artifacts like the boomerang and cursed phone, to protect their friends, save their way of life, and, potentially, remind The Gourd of what he formerly stood for and reawaken the fallen hero known as Captain Melonhead to turn the tide of battle."

I imagine Ed would've become either a horror comic writer or a horror movie writer seeing as how much he loves them.

Double D becomes a succesful surgeon, and oddly enough warms up to Marie. And Eddy is the head of a huge corporation. Also, Johnny seems to have grown out of his weird habits. He prefers not to discuss Plank, implying him to be an embarrassing phase. Oh and Jimmy's a twink looking guy who sells furniture.
Correction: Eddy is a loan shark, and has been shot on two seperate occasions. Double D had to patch him up both times.

Though, I see the movie as the perfect finale where they managed to wrap up almost everything.. (We still don't know what's under Edd's cap, and what the heck is Jonny doing becoming a villain..) The most beautiful thing you can notice, is how the characters actually developed. Specially Eddy, who finally got what he always asked for, recognition.
