The way Abuela cries in her version of the story, her face when she drops on her knees and just breaks shook me so much. It feels almost too realistic, the kind of unspeakable pain that is so painful it physically hurts your heart, I feel like most of us can relate to that at some point. What a powerful movie this was.
This song and scene wrecks me. I don't understand a word of Spanish, but I felt every bit of what was said Edit: I have looked up the English version of the song, I still prefer the Spanish one.
I've honestly never seen a disney character ever break down this way before. Probably to conceal the auethentic grief of it all from kids, but still. There's such a huge contrast between the depiction of her hurt the first time abuela told Mirabel the story, and the second. It adds so much to the storytelling and I love it! amazing movie
@@ello3110 It's so perfect. Especially in the times we're living in, I think taking a more emotionally "honest" route is good - for kids and adults alike. You're so right about the 1st and 2nd telling of the story, I didn't even notice that.
Maturity is when a person hurts you and you try to understand their situation rather than hurting them back and Mirabel definitely displayed true maturity here
The best part is that it’s the first time that she’s really showing her true feelings to Mirabel which gives the opportunity for Mirabel to be able to connect with her & instead of further twisting the knife by agreeing that it’s her fault she takes the opportunity to acknowledge all that she’s done right. They’re both able to see what went wrong and work together to create repair.
For me, it's not the crying that sells it in the flashback. It's that few seconds of staring, just staring into nothing while she's holding her triplets. Just the raw nothingness after something so sharply traumatic. That's something hard to capture but it was.
The contrast between how Abuela narrated the story in the beginning as a tale of hope vs how traumatizing it actually was and how deeply it affected her and by extension, her family
@@pringlebatch Remember when we first hear her tell the story, she's telling it to a child Mirabel. Understandable Abuela wouldn't tell the raw tale to her at-the-time small grandchild.
Especially when you realize the Candle literally made a mountain from where she lost her husband so she never had to confront the trauma. The symbolism in this movie is insane.
When I saw it, the dumbass in charge of the lights in the theater didn't turn them off until the title card. Completely missed the visuals of the opening.
If you're Colombian and are aware of the suffering of many displaced from their homes by the most horrific violence, this part of the movie breaks you.
Being a father and a husband….when I watched this the first time I couldn’t stop crying. My wife asked me what part made me cry. I told her that Pedro knew he was going to die but didn’t think twice to defend his wife and children….even if it was hopeless he had to try. A real man, sacrificing his own life for even the slightest chance the people he loves would live on.
This movie is honestly so well crafted, my mom liked it so much she decided she would let me go to college and study screenwriting (if I get in anywhere)
The scene where Alma is sitting on the floor after losing Pedro is just so real and raw. You can see how lost she is, how broken she is, the emptiness she's experiencing. Its so relatable for so many people, i love this movie so much
I love the detail that in the beginning where they show the same backstory, Alma's emotions are more dull (you can clearly see sadness but not as raw) and I think that is because the first time we see it it's Mirabel re-telling her abuelas story, it's how Mirabel perceived it. The 2nd time it's Alma telling it from her perspective and the emotions are so much more amplified!
Notice how the people that were running away with them stay with Alma when they saw Pedro's sacrifice. They stay with her because of her suffering and his lost. It's so beautiful that I can't help cry. Spanish people were just ... Wild.
Anyone who thinks that the part where she breaks down crying looks fake has obviously never had a "my world is falling apart" episode of crying. This is probably the best depiction of it ive ever seen. Those cries can turn into near screams of sorrow. Having cried like that before, that part really broke my heart

Gotta be honest, this scene is actually so cruel and real, a woman who watches her husband being murdered just to be massacred after him along with her babies and the village if it wasn’t for the miracle, her expression is pure horror and pain, as she falls to the ground crying, hopeless and broken … her expressions during this scene are something I’ve never seen before in an animated movie.
And the way she curls around her babies. Not only does she know that she'd be next, but so would her children, who are barely a couple days, maybe a few weeks old. Her entire body is over them, trying to protect them the way her husband tried to protect _all_ of them.
The fact that this was a reality for so many grandparents who left their homes and comfort to somewhere else for a different and better life for the people they love and they animated it all to show the rawness and sacrifice they went through- this makes me cry every time
“I asked my Pedro for help. Mirabel, he sent me you.” I love this line from Alma, as I feel like it’s a symbol of the lesson she has learned. The answer she was searching for, that she prayed to her late husband for, was right there all along, in Mirabel. The true gift that Pedro gave his wife was her, and Bruno, and all of their children and grandchildren. The Gifts, Casita, all of the magic and wonder to be found in the Encanto, was just an expression of the love Pedro Madrigal felt for his family, and it lives on in Alma and her descendants who owe their lives to his sacrifice. And that, is the true miracle.
I think for me the most heart wrenching part is when Abuela’s husband is saying goodbye and kisses her and she’s just staring at him trying to understand and not realizing what’s about to happen. You can literally see the panic and confusion and grief in her eyes as it all becomes clear. That was it for me. 😢
When her eyes start to tear up, suddenly and abruptly as the heartbreak starts. 1:26 That feeling right before the heartbreak, right before the breakdown. It was captured so well.
Literally! It actually hurt my heart so much because you can actually feel her pain. She cries with everything she has because it was her love she watched die. I felt more emotion in that scene and they did so much better than previous movies. Like in frozen where Anna turned into ice. I didn’t feel sad because Elsa just stood there and sobbed. They didn’t put more emotion in and they should’ve because it was Elsa’s sister whom she neglected.
Abuelas husband is so brave to have sacrificed his life just for the people and his family. But its a shame that pepa, bruno, and julieta grew up without a father.
"We were saved because of you. We were given a miracle because of you. We are a family because of you." It's easy to focus on the harm Abuela caused to the family but Mirabel's words here are 100% true. Abuela was so strong to not only to survive her tragic past, raise her three children by herself, and take the role as the caretaker of the village. And not only that, her ability to admit that she's wrong and improve upon herself shows true care for her family and inner strength

It's such a nice contrast to me. Its implied that he died when she explained the beginning when she tells it to young Mirabel. However we learn its deeper than that. Abuela hasn't been able to deal with the grief shes been feeling and instead of working through it is easier to dismiss or deny them being there. So when she opens up to Mirabel, she acknowledges her pain and suffering. She even stated that she hasnt been there in over 50 years
Yes and that is exactly why she is probably one of my favorite characters, her actions aren't condoned but she doesn't admit she was wrong and is now choosing to be better
We exhist because our grandparents swallowed down their trauma and shoved in in a remote corner to be able to raise the next generation and give them a better future. We exhist because of their sacrifice; our future for their time to heal. It doesnt excuse their actions, for all the harm they have caused, trying to keep us from one form of trauma they created another, plus allowed their own unprocessed one to haunt and rot the family dynamic. But still, there wouldnt be a family if it wasnt for them.
For me there was Bambi’s mom, Dumbo’s mom, both when she gets taken away and “Baby Mine”, Todd’s mom and having to say goodbye to Widow Tweed, Mufasa’s death, Sully saying goodbye to Boo, and pretty much every Pixar movie has their moment.

It feels like Disney is going back to their golden age. Unafraid to show death (even though it's off screen) and include dark and deep issues which I love so much
So true!!! I've noticed that too, and I think that that's very fitting in the world we live in today. You never know what's around the corner, and it can be really terrifying, but Disney reminds us to never lose sight of how beautiful life truly is.
This is one of the *only* songs in the movie that isn’t sung by a character. It’s sung as a way to narrate the events of the past, and explains the tale of “two caterpillars” as they grow apart from natural causes and soon turn into butterflies, finding their own ways in life. I believe that the singer of this song is supposed to be Pedro himself as he watches over his family due to the loss of casita. The last few lines of the song (in English) are: “Ay, butterflies, don't hold on anymore You must grow apart and return, you'll keep moving forwards There are already miracles, chrysalises breaking open You must fly, you must find your own future.” And I think that’s beautiful. It’s addressed specifically *to* Alma, I believe as a sort of closure from Pedro. He’s telling her that they lived a beautiful life together in the short time they had, and that it’s okay for her to grieve over her loss, and “until they meet again” (when she passes), she needs to stop living in a fantasy of perfection and let herself and her family rest and grieve. Because if she does, she will finally move on from her past and make herself better for her family. Edit: I changed the beginning of my comment from “it’s the only song not sung by a character in the movie”, since many people seem very hung up on that apparently.
4:31 This is without a doubt the most beautiful, emotional, powerful, incredible embrace I've ever seen in any animated feature film. It's not just any hug though. It's a hug of true love, forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing. And also takes place in a wonderful, visual environment. I'd never thought Encanto would have a scene like this that I love.

Her expression on 2:08, pretty much saying, “what am I suppose to do now?” Breaks me seeing she lost her lover and comprehending what just happened to her really gets you
None of the characters have said a word on the flashback, but their expressions and emotions spoke a lot for them. Kudos to the whole team of creators of Encanto, this movie became one of Disney's best creations.

Everybody is talking about "We don't talk about Bruno" which is an amazing song but "Dos oruguitas" is also a masterpiece not only because of its lyrics but also because of what this song represents in relation to the conflict and violence that has been part not only of Colombia's history, but also of Latin America history. This song deserves an Oscar.
The fact that Abuela didn't take off her mourning shawl until she reconciled with Mirabel. It meant that for so many years she was still in pain with what happened. Now she is finally healing.
As a Colombian this scene just hit me so hard, remembers me my Abuela and makes me understand her character even more, she suffered so much that she built a helmet in her heart, i love you abuela and miss you a lot❤
I swear I sob like a baby every time I hear this song. The whole sequence is perfect. It's so beautiful and raw and ultimately hopeful too. It's a masterpiece honestly.
I love that the moment Alma cries, she doesn't yells the typical "No!", but she rips her throat with her cry, you can really see her heart break when she watches her husband die and can't do anything about it. The way she collapses and falls to the ground is something very realistic and really shows the great pain of the character, which, although it's animated, I'm sure it made more than one cry. She has reasons to cry so heartbreakingly. She is watching how the love of her life is killed, the only person who seems to have a connection with her at that moment (since her relatives don't appear in that scene). With that alone, it already leaves her with a severe trauma. In addition, at that moment she is left without a partner, and it means that she is ALONE, in charge of 3 BABIES. If a single baby requires a lot of attention, imagine 3! Alma, even though she is an animated character, shows how strong and solid a woman has to force herself to be when others depend on her. And there are women in real life who are like that, and those people deserve respect.
Right? That's such a real, raw expression of grief. You can see her heart being torn to shreds - and that's exactly what it feels like to lose someone you love.
What makes this scene more intense is the fact that Abuela gave up all hope when she saw Pedro die. In that moment, she knew that herself and her children were next. That weeping was not only for her husband's death, but for her three children and herself. Without a doubt, a part of herself died that day and it is truly heartbreakingly beautiful.
And that's what makes that miracle... So powerful and at a great cost. Lost of her friend, her partner, Her Heart. Just so she and all those around her could live. Her Miracle was to live. To move forward but even without words you can still see she lost sight of it bearing the weight that didn't need to be there, but yet the miracle did it's part may have taken a long while for her to seen it, in the end she is blessed for seeing it.
Alma (Abuela). Not a villain. Not even a bad person, but a complicated and strong human being who was deeply traumatized and just lost sight of what truly mattered. Wonderful writing for a character!!

They aren't bad people just broken by their experiences. Unfortunately, that creates cycles of broken people. Children who repeat the same mistakes as their parents. It takes so much more to see their humanity and break the cycle. That's what this movie is about. Not the magic, but the love between very broken people who overcome their grief, experiences, hardships to become better people as one family.

I love how this also explains the town’s complete dependence & willingness to continue exploiting the family unintentionally. They all come from the generations of people who also escaped from that awfulness & trauma. And in their moment of desperation/fear, they were also saved by the miracle & enveloped in it’s safety & provision. Makes my mind run.
This is litteraly hands down one of the best sences in the history of animation. A masterpiece of music and storytelling that gives me chills everytime i watch it
She is incredible, you could see the strong emotion of losing the love of her life but she still had to be strong for her children, it was very evident in the scene where she looks at her children and swallows her suffering And I moved on for the family
I think as a Colombian, what makes this song hit even harder is that this is a representation of the many civil wars that Colombia has endured. It’s heartbreaking to think about how many Colombians lived through those horrible times and probably prayed for their own miracle 😔
This movie is similar to my family. My grandfather was a Colombian senator who was assassinated by surrogates of Escobar. My grandma fleed Colombia to the United States with her 3 children, in our case 2 sons and a daughter. My dad was the youngest son, married my American mom, and I was born.
Not just Colombia even. My family is from El Salvador and my parents lived through the civil war, and I felt like this scene kind of showed me a glimpse of what that reality was like for them. Except My grandparents escaped to The states and then canada instead Edit: oddly enough similar to the movie and the other comment in this thread, both my parents had two siblings. So both my grandparents left with three children as well hah. But both my parents were the oldest child
I love how this song shows how the black shawl she wears the entire time is a mourning shawl. She had been stuck with the pain of the past, figuratively and almost literally mourning her husband for decades instead of looking forward. What I'm trying to say is this movie is so darn brilliant.
Great point! I never noticed it until you mentioned it. And by the very end of the movie, she no longer needs the shawl symbolizing that she is finally ready to come to grips with her trauma and begin the healing process. She might still carry the pain and trauma from losing Pedro, but she no longer let's it hold her back.
This scene hit hard for me as a Colombian American and how my mother talked about how my grandfather and grandmother had to flee because of conflict in the 1950s. They fled to the area based on where encanto takes place or is based on. 3:41 this movie just ment so much to me because of it.

It’s truly remarkable, this sad song has an uplifting theme to it. It’s a testament to hope and despite how cheerful the song is, they overlap it with complete tragedy. It’s a whirlwind of mixed emotions that leaves the viewer feelings of love and gratitude. Playing a cheerful song over tragedy had to have been intentional. It’s absolutely genius
That dead stare she gives somehow more realistically shows the immediate grief that occurs after the sudden loss of a loved one than anything I’ve ever really seen animated. Just the disbelief and numbness that occurs the for the time that directly after the incident. The cries of agony were also painfully well done. There’s so much emotion in just how they animated this small bit of the movie
AGREED. With how it was told in the intro, it kinda threw me off because I was like “Huh. Well she is telling it to a grandchild, but I still thought it would be sad.” I still thought it was good but as soon as the flashback started, I knew what was gonna happen but I WAS NOT ready for how raw it felt. For how painful it looked. After the scene all I could think of “Where was this Disney?! This true interpretation of loss, pain and heartbreak?!” Heck, Elsa didn’t even look that destroyed when she though Anna was gone. Disney did amazing and I hope this scene wins the award.
💯 that scene gives such a real and raw view of grief. And when she stands and walks thru the door, it was almost like you could see those walls building up because of her fear of losing the rest of her family.
It really hits even harder to us Colombians. We grew up hearing stories like this, after 70 years of war and forced displacement like it’s shown in the movie (Colombia is the country with the highest number of internal displaced people/refugees in the entire world.) most Colombian families see themselves reflected in this scene. My own grandma told me how her family had to come to the city leaving their town after her dad was being chased by the other side. Disney really did a remarkable and touching work of really depicting reality and accurately representing our struggles.

I was aware of the tragedies that the movie was referencing but I can’t imagine what it must have been like to hear these same stories from those who experienced it and I’m glad the movie was able to properly represent the horrors the people of your country had to go through. I can’t imagine the generational trauma it must have caused.
This scene, god. Abuela is at her most painful moment, yet the candle shines the brightest. And the song is at its climax. The happiest, relieving and the saddest, breaking moment at the same time.

I don't know any Spanish but I teared up when I heard the song for the very first time (and... following few times). I think its very beautiful that you don't need to understand Spanish because the song is so well-written and well executed that you still emotionally understand the message. I love how the singer was able to slowly turn the somewhat sweet and light hearted atmosphere into this heavy and crushing sadness. For me, personally, the Spanish version is more fitting than the English version, I just love it so much.
As a Colombian, this song hits hard. My family went through the same. My great grandparents were displaced from their homelands. My great grandfather died of sadness after losing everything he worked his entire live for. My great grandmother took take of everything and everybody. This is the reality of thousands of Colombian families.

Only Mirabel, with her empathy and sensitivity, could imagine the story as well as if she were there. As much as I disapprove of Alma, I recognize how painful her loss was. Every time I listen to this song I can't help but be moved. Encanto is a great movie❤️

@@BDSYA00 Hi, I'm Colombian, this could be from two events, the first one is called La Guerra de los Mil Días (the war of a thousand days) it was a civil conflict where some people would be from the conservative party and other people from the liberal party, this occurred between 1899 and 1902, due to political discomforts, liberals would kill conservatives and vicebersa, if they knew one was from a certain political party they would kill you, so people would often leave their home, leave everything behind to start over again to try to avoid that when they were threatened. Then the other event is called La Violencia (The violence) and occurred between 1948 and 1958, again because of the liberal party and conservative party, and this is one of the reasons why forced displacement and the internal armed conflict exists here in Colombia, because, well, it's still happening for other reasons as well and it's a big deal. Thank you for asking by the way, it's really nice when people is interested in our history with good intentions :)
This just does such an amazing job at showing how a family trauma, unhealed and unprocessed, can really affect the family's relationships and health. Alma's trauma altered her perceptions from "Pedro died for our family" to the point where everyone in the family had to be *worthy* of Pedro's sacrifice. Hence the pressure, the perfectionist standards, and her treatment of Mirabel as less than. By never facing the pain and the loss and instead allowing it to become a family fairytale, not only does she distance herself from it emotionally, she also doesn't have to examine her perceptions because nobody dares to question the narrative. These are all extremely common ways the human brain deals with trauma, as are the repercussions seen in the film too; anxiety, isolation, mask-wearing, emotional repression, and dysfunctional family dynamics. Makes me wonder if they called on any of the psychology team they used for Inside Out again.
@@beelieboo oh heck yeah. I actually show Inside Out as a therapeutic tool because aside from the characters and the gizmos, it's pretty cutting-edge neuroscience. They had a psych team, a neurology team, and neurosurgeons all from top medical university faculties to consult with. It's the most realistic and yet relatable explanation of how memory storage, core beliefs/ memories, and memory formation all work, not to mention how trauma and depression can affect the brain and us. Really well done by Pixar.

Parce yo esta parte la vi en Corea del sur y no aguante las ganas de llorar, pero no por la pelicula en si, si no por el trasfondo de los desplazados y el dia de las velitas jaja
I feel so utterly hurt that people can watch this scene, see her pain, know what this did to her, and call her a monster. Abuela was never a monster. She’s a hurt widow who’s so scared of losing the one thing that protected her family, that saved her and her community from harm, that she unknowingly put pressure on her family to keep it safe. She never meant to hurt anyone. And at the end of the day, she realized what she had done and was willing to make up for it.
Same... generational trauma is a tricky thing. We can see why people did things but sometimes we can't forgive them. But to disregard their trauma completely isn't fair either. And we can appreciate that Abuela took the steps to help her family which is something a lot of people never manage to do.
@@stephaniesuber313 Considering the people had machetes and were on horseback, I'd say she watched him get beheaded. Machete are more for slashing than stabbing. Which somehow feels even worse.

Did you not see what all she went through? How absolutely terrifying and stressful it must have been everyday to see Maribel not get a door and think they were losing their home again. She realized her mistake and apologized. Maribel and the family forgave her, why can't ya'll? Then people want to talk about their families traumas. Healing comes from apologizing AND forgiving.
I love how humanizing and raw this part of the movie is, it doesn't try to make abuela and mirabel the good and bad guys, it actually shows REAL characterization and shows how abuela isn't some unredeemable villain but a complex and well meaning woman who was so afraid to lose everything a second time she held on TOO tight

It has been a while since I cried during a movie, let alone a musical. But this broke me, in such a beautiful and heartbreaking way, even without fully understanding all of the lyrics. Just the visuals were enough, but I could feel all the emotion in the song, and I’m ashamed for not wanting to watch this at first.
I’m fairly sure the song translates to how two caterpillars mature into butterflies. (I am not totally sure I just read this somewhere) but if that is the case, it just makes this scene that much more emotional. Truely a beautiful crafted scene.
It really hits hard when you realize that this is probably the first time Alma has ever talked about Pedro’s death and the impact his loss had on her life. Everyone knows that he died but not how.
I love how the crack in the mountain can also be interpreted as the whole Encanto opening up to reality. The Madrigal Family is like the heart of the Encanto. They pretended everything was perfect and protected the town the same way the mountains sealed away the Encanto. But when it breaks in half, it's seen as a weakness, leaving them exposed and vulnerable. But now it's viewed as a sign of change, of being open to internal conflict and reaching out to others. The same way the butterflies represent metamorphosis and change. I love it!
Sure. That's one way to look at it. But... The Madrigals' powers are perfect in the worst case scenario if something (say a pathway opening up revealing their safe haven to the outside world) suddenly made them have to flee from their homes--again. Camilo and Antonio can use their powers for reconnaissance. Delores can hear the danger coming. Bruno can see it coming. Luisa can act as a protector. Pepa can literally create difficult terrain. Isabella can create natural camouflage, difficult terrain, or she can grow crops in a pinch. Julieta's food can keep them sustained and heal them while they're being pursued. The Miracle gave them a protective barrier because that's what this community of refugees needed at that moment. Now, the mountain is cracked and they're vulnerable to outside dangers once more so the Miracle also gave Abuela and the citizens of Encanto a Plan B in the form of the other Madrigals. Encanto being vulnerable makes me worried.
@@ehlonna86 oh, I totally get where you're coming from! I've seen other people connect their powers to how it would have helped Abuela and Pedro when they were younger. I love these connections! I was talking more symbolically but literally, yeah, it's a big weakness and probably a big adversity to get over. If they really wanted to, I'm sure they could make some sort of artificial barrier to fix it. But I love the discussion! Thanks for the perspective!
I wanna see a sequel where the deal with the consecuences of opening up, where the guerrilla and paramilitary groups come looking for resources and people like they always do It would be an evolution of the Desplazamiento problem and it would face the Madrigals against a physical threat I know it will likely never happen and that thematically it wouldnt work too well with the movie we yot but eh, one can dream
Fun fact: the event in wich Abuelo and Abuela met, where many people were carrying candles, was the Festival de Las Velitas, a colombian religious festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. Candles are very associated with her in Colombia.
I love when books and movies have tiny details that are really amazing when discovered. Here’s one I just realized: Remember how earlier in the movie, Bruno said to “follow the butterfly” when they were doing the vision? Well, look at where the butterflies fly towards at the end of this song: through the mountain and back home. The butterflies lead them home.
I love the contrast in the opening and this scene. We hear Abuela's voice in that opening scene, but whose thoughts are we seeing? Mirabel's. They're shadowy and dull until it gets to the part about the miracle, just as it would be for a child hearing a story like that. But what happens at the end? The two are physically at the place where the miracle began - literally and metaphorically at the beginning. Mirabel sees the story with much more color. When it gets to the part she is familiar with, Mirabel is physically present in the memory. That's why she can say that she finally sees. She didn't see the woman grieving her heart out over the loss of her husband before. She saw a woman who got a great miracle and a happy ending. But at the end, Mirabel watches Abuela's absolute shock, terror, and grief occur at the exact same time that her miracle goes to work. Abuela didn't care about the miracle at that moment, only about her loss. Mirabel helped her finish grieving and finally appreciate the miracle for what it was, something born out of the pure love of Pedro and Alma. It's just a beautiful story.
This scene was a game changer. Disney is finally stepping away from the pretty crying faces and gave us something raw. Her eyes were red, multiple tear lines were on her face and her face was pulled back in agony. That added so much emotion. Very well done. They earned my tears
What got me was how stretched her mouth was. You can't hear anything except for the song, but just from the shape of her mouth alone you can hear the most terrified, painful, blood curdling scream you could possibly imagine. Gut wrenching.
This scene is as touching and heartbreaking as the opening to the movie "Up". Calling Abuela a villain is a mistake, she's not a villain, she's pretty much like Carl from "Up". She loved someone and lost that person in a very horrible way, leaving her all alone with her three babies. Yes, she was demanding and wanted everything to be perfect, but it's just what happens when you don't let go of the grief and let it consume you.
Carl at least lived most of his life with Ellie, and she seemed to die peacefully. Abuela and Pedro had only a short time together, and Abuela had to watch him be murdered. Both heartbreaking stories, but I'd argue Abuela's is worse because Carl and Ellie were able to enjoy each other for many years before she died of her illness.
No, sorry, it's no excuse. Carl hurt NOONE. Look at those three precious babies in her arms? Well, one of them spent 15 YEARS OF HIS LIFE hidden in the WALLS of the house because he couldn't be perfect enough for his mother. She's the vilain. THe most terryfying kind. A narcissist.
Sometimes people forget Abuela had to raise 3 children on her own, right after suffering a significant trauma, and without any kind of help except for the magic. I understand she did wrong, but always with the intention of keeping everyone safe. With Carl it was a different story, he was grieving too but had not any kind of pressure on him.

@@barnagotte7297 Carl hurt a kid. He was verbally abusive to that kid for half the movie. Also he only spent ten years. And she's not a narcissist because she ADMITS SHE CAUSED HARM. She was a traumatized woman who had no time to mourn, no closure of being able to bury her husband even, and three infants to care for with no one to help her. She felt the perfection was needed to pay respect for the miracle given to them. In trying to navigate with untreated PTSD, she ends up hurting her own family especially as time goes on. She thought she was doing what was best--but it wasn't. And she realized that after the foundation broke--a home built on the foundation of TRAUMA and LOSS. The rebuilt house is stronger for being built of love.
It's such a brief and short detail but I love mirabel's expressions in the scene where abuela falls to her knees. Not only the horror of truly understanding what happened, but of finally seeing abuela as the young woman who hurt so much, not just as her stoic demanding grandmother. It's hard to picture family members you've known your whole life any younger or different than they are, I love her expression as she fully realizes and empathizes with abuela's pain. Incredible visual story-telling.
Not only is this one of the best songs in the movie; my personal favorites being, "What Else Can I Do?," "The Family Madrigal" and "Waiting On a Miracle," but it's the way Mirabel is interwoven into Alma's flashback and sees what her grandmother experienced, for herself. I especially love Mirabel's expression at 1:54. The utter heartbreak and compassion on her face as she watches Alma collapse to the ground in tears, after seeing Pedro get killed before her very eyes is brilliant and relatable. That, along with Mirabel comforting Alma and their reconciliation amongst a swarm of butterflies flying around them, is what sells the scene for me. I cannot even begin to describe how much of an impact "Encanto" has had on me throughout the last couple years. Mirabel's compassion and relatability is why I love her character so much. This scene is proof of that. Walt Disney Pictures outdid themselves with this film.
The part of "I forgot who our miracle was for," always makes me tear up. The look on poor Mirabel's face, the fear and uncertainty. It breaks my heart that when she felt so small and vulnerable, her grandmother didn't comfort her like she was suppose to.
I haven’t seen anyone point this out but the scene where Abuja Alma is sitting down with her 3 babies plays such a big roll in her character development. She’s a new mom with infant triplets, lost her home, saw the murder of the love of her life all in 1 day. Despite the grief & pain she felt in the moment, she still got up, grab her coat, & walked out the door symbolizing that she got to work to create a future & provide a home for her children & community the best she could with what she had mentally & emotionally. I see many people making a villain out of Abuela Alma, I can understand and see why, but she’s only human & just in much of needing healing as everyone else. I don’t condone the way she treats her family at all! I just understand why she did what she did.
I totally understand ... Traumatic events cause many people to act in ways that perhaps they did not expect, and when you lose not only your home, but also the love of your life and Besides, you are a mother with very young children ... Well I think we would do the same as Alma, try to protect your children and keep you signed as far as you can, even if you know that you are so hurt and depressed ... And worst of all, I think that in a country where this type of thing happens a lot, then showing vulnerability to those who depend on you, it is not an option.
Thank you, Disney, not only for honoring displaced people everywhere, but also for honoring Gabriel García Márquez and his yellow butterflies. I can't help but get teary eyed when I watch this heart wrenching scene.

I love how this movie has no real villain. It's just a bunch of people who are trying to live with expectations, judgement from both family and community, and how they can come together as a whole. It just also happens to have magic involved. It feels more like a slice of life kind of movie. Not your typical Disney flick and I actually like that. You don't always have to be special in order to stand out. I like that message.
Every now and then, Disney has the balls to show real-world tragedies such as this. Even though _La Guerra de los Mil Días_ was before my time, it's a part of my people's history and harshest realities that sadly hasn't ended. Looking at what Alma and Pedro went through really hit home for us Colombianos.
What I adore about this movie is that there is no ‘boss fight’, no villain. Just a cathartic conversation between two great characters finding redemption.

She felt that she had to live up to the opportunity that she was given and expectations that the village had. However, a person's good intentions doesn't necessarily make them a good person. In this case, it wounded up negatively affecting the family in the end.
@@barnagotte7297 What abuse was there? She had unrealistic expectations for the family, that was all. There was no physical abuse, she never verbally insulted them, no outright neglect. We have to understand that people can be mistaken. You're acting like Abuela committed some unforgivable crime.
I must say, this song is truly the most underrated of all songs in Encanto. Sebastián Yatra did a great job perfoming the song, and Lin-Manuel Miranda did a great job writing.

I honestly don't know why, but when all of the yellow butterflies start to fly around Alma and Mirabel, it makes me cry so damn hard. And I already cried plenty on this movie, but there's something so majestical about that scene, it just bursts all of the emotions within me. This movie is too amazing to be true.
@@vacarlos It's because Pedro's spirit "lives" when the family loves each other. I still think the Casita/candles enchantment was Pedro all along. His "life" fizzled away when everyone was fighting one another. He "chose" Mirabel to continue the next page for Casita once grandma passes away. Maribel's door was always the entrance door to the whole house but no one ever realized it. He was guiding them back home after the reconciliation by the river with the butterflies 🥺 that's why it's so magical. Pedro is a character that's there the whole time during the movie it's frigging genius!
As a colombian myself, this scene is and will remain one of my favorite Disney scenes of all time. It's so powerful and straight forward with things that are sadly a reality in our country like families being forced to leave their home due to armed conflicts. But at the same time, it makes Alma a relatable and complex character that even reminded me of my grandma, at which point, you know they did a great job. The song is also just amazing, touching and deserving of all praise. My eyes can't help but tear up at this masterpiece.
Anyone who says, this movie upsets them because Mirabel “allowed” her family to be toxic to her and was just ok with an apology… DID NOT TRULY WATCH this movie… toxicity in a family is a cycle… at some point you have to break that cycle… or it will continue to live on for generations…. Accepting an apology is not a weakness, and it’s not for the person who you are accepting it from. The apology is for YOU… for you to let go and keep moving forward.. for you to forgive and LEARN what not to do next time… this movie MOVED me on so many levels… being the “black sheep” I know the feeling and I’m sure some of you do to.. understand where it comes from and FORGIVE.. ❤

The way Abuela cries in her version of the story, her face when she drops on her knees and just breaks shook me so much. It feels almost too realistic, the kind of unspeakable pain that is so painful it physically hurts your heart, I feel like most of us can relate to that at some point. What a powerful movie this was.

Maturity is when a person hurts you and you try to understand their situation rather than hurting them back and Mirabel definitely displayed true maturity here
That’s something I never really thought of. Mirabel understood her grandmother’s situation rather than agonizing it in this scene.
The best part is that it’s the first time that she’s really showing her true feelings to Mirabel which gives the opportunity for Mirabel to be able to connect with her & instead of further twisting the knife by agreeing that it’s her fault she takes the opportunity to acknowledge all that she’s done right. They’re both able to see what went wrong and work together to create repair.

For me, it's not the crying that sells it in the flashback. It's that few seconds of staring, just staring into nothing while she's holding her triplets. Just the raw nothingness after something so sharply traumatic. That's something hard to capture but it was.

When I saw it, the dumbass in charge of the lights in the theater didn't turn them off until the title card. Completely missed the visuals of the opening.

Being a father and a husband….when I watched this the first time I couldn’t stop crying. My wife asked me what part made me cry. I told her that Pedro knew he was going to die but didn’t think twice to defend his wife and children….even if it was hopeless he had to try. A real man, sacrificing his own life for even the slightest chance the people he loves would live on.

I became a dad just last year, and this scene hits a lot harder imagining myself on Pedro’s position, kissing my baby son for the last time.

The scene where Alma is sitting on the floor after losing Pedro is just so real and raw. You can see how lost she is, how broken she is, the emptiness she's experiencing. Its so relatable for so many people, i love this movie so much
Agreed, they could have shown her crying, but that vacant, lost stare into nothing makes it so much more realistic and raw.
I love the detail that in the beginning where they show the same backstory, Alma's emotions are more dull (you can clearly see sadness but not as raw) and I think that is because the first time we see it it's Mirabel re-telling her abuelas story, it's how Mirabel perceived it. The 2nd time it's Alma telling it from her perspective and the emotions are so much more amplified!

Notice how the people that were running away with them stay with Alma when they saw Pedro's sacrifice. They stay with her because of her suffering and his lost. It's so beautiful that I can't help cry. Spanish people were just ... Wild.

Anyone who thinks that the part where she breaks down crying looks fake has obviously never had a "my world is falling apart" episode of crying. This is probably the best depiction of it ive ever seen. Those cries can turn into near screams of sorrow.

Gotta be honest, this scene is actually so cruel and real, a woman who watches her husband being murdered just to be massacred after him along with her babies and the village if it wasn’t for the miracle, her expression is pure horror and pain, as she falls to the ground crying, hopeless and broken … her expressions during this scene are something I’ve never seen before in an animated movie.
And the way she curls around her babies. Not only does she know that she'd be next, but so would her children, who are barely a couple days, maybe a few weeks old. Her entire body is over them, trying to protect them the way her husband tried to protect _all_ of them.

“I asked my Pedro for help. Mirabel, he sent me you.” I love this line from Alma, as I feel like it’s a symbol of the lesson she has learned. The answer she was searching for, that she prayed to her late husband for, was right there all along, in Mirabel. The true gift that Pedro gave his wife was her, and Bruno, and all of their children and grandchildren. The Gifts, Casita, all of the magic and wonder to be found in the Encanto, was just an expression of the love Pedro Madrigal felt for his family, and it lives on in Alma and her descendants who owe their lives to his sacrifice. And that, is the true miracle.

I think for me the most heart wrenching part is when Abuela’s husband is saying goodbye and kisses her and she’s just staring at him trying to understand and not realizing what’s about to happen. You can literally see the panic and confusion and grief in her eyes as it all becomes clear. That was it for me. 😢
And then she had to watch him get cut apart with machetes, knowing she and her babies would be next if not for the magic candle's intervention.
When her eyes start to tear up, suddenly and abruptly as the heartbreak starts. 1:26 That feeling right before the heartbreak, right before the breakdown. It was captured so well.

Literally! It actually hurt my heart so much because you can actually feel her pain. She cries with everything she has because it was her love she watched die. I felt more emotion in that scene and they did so much better than previous movies. Like in frozen where Anna turned into ice. I didn’t feel sad because Elsa just stood there and sobbed. They didn’t put more emotion in and they should’ve because it was Elsa’s sister whom she neglected.

It's easy to focus on the harm Abuela caused to the family but Mirabel's words here are 100% true. Abuela was so strong to not only to survive her tragic past, raise her three children by herself, and take the role as the caretaker of the village. And not only that, her ability to admit that she's wrong and improve upon herself shows true care for her family and inner strength

It's such a nice contrast to me. Its implied that he died when she explained the beginning when she tells it to young Mirabel. However we learn its deeper than that. Abuela hasn't been able to deal with the grief shes been feeling and instead of working through it is easier to dismiss or deny them being there. So when she opens up to Mirabel, she acknowledges her pain and suffering. She even stated that she hasnt been there in over 50 years
Yes and that is exactly why she is probably one of my favorite characters, her actions aren't condoned but she doesn't admit she was wrong and is now choosing to be better
We exhist because our grandparents swallowed down their trauma and shoved in in a remote corner to be able to raise the next generation and give them a better future. We exhist because of their sacrifice; our future for their time to heal. It doesnt excuse their actions, for all the harm they have caused, trying to keep us from one form of trauma they created another, plus allowed their own unprocessed one to haunt and rot the family dynamic. But still, there wouldnt be a family if it wasnt for them.

This is one of the *only* songs in the movie that isn’t sung by a character. It’s sung as a way to narrate the events of the past, and explains the tale of “two caterpillars” as they grow apart from natural causes and soon turn into butterflies, finding their own ways in life. I believe that the singer of this song is supposed to be Pedro himself as he watches over his family due to the loss of casita.
The last few lines of the song (in English) are:
“Ay, butterflies, don't hold on anymore
You must grow apart and return, you'll keep moving forwards
There are already miracles, chrysalises breaking open
You must fly, you must find your own future.”
And I think that’s beautiful. It’s addressed specifically *to* Alma, I believe as a sort of closure from Pedro. He’s telling her that they lived a beautiful life together in the short time they had, and that it’s okay for her to grieve over her loss, and “until they meet again” (when she passes), she needs to stop living in a fantasy of perfection and let herself and her family rest and grieve. Because if she does, she will finally move on from her past and make herself better for her family.

4:31 This is without a doubt the most beautiful, emotional, powerful, incredible embrace I've ever seen in any animated feature film. It's not just any hug though. It's a hug of true love, forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing. And also takes place in a wonderful, visual environment. I'd never thought Encanto would have a scene like this that I love.

Everybody is talking about "We don't talk about Bruno" which is an amazing song but "Dos oruguitas" is also a masterpiece not only because of its lyrics but also because of what this song represents in relation to the conflict and violence that has been part not only of Colombia's history, but also of Latin America history. I love that the moment Alma cries, she doesn't yells the typical "No!", but she rips her throat with her cry, you can really see her heart break when she watches her husband die and can't do anything about it. The way she collapses and falls to the ground is something very realistic and really shows the great pain of the character, which, although it's animated, I'm sure it made more than one cry.
She has reasons to cry so heartbreakingly. She is watching how the love of her life is killed, the only person who seems to have a connection with her at that moment (since her relatives don't appear in that scene). With that alone, it already leaves her with a severe trauma.
In addition, at that moment she is left without a partner, and it means that she is ALONE, in charge of 3 BABIES. If a single baby requires a lot of attention, imagine 3!
Alma, even though she is an animated character, shows how strong and solid a woman has to force herself to be when others depend on her. And there are women in real life who are like that, and those people deserve respect.

This movie is a textbook example of a modern Disney masterpiece, might even be in the top 10, even top 5 in my eyes.
As someone who’s family has been affected by civil violence between factions in Colombia this scene made me cry
What makes this scene more intense is the fact that Abuela gave up all hope when she saw Pedro die. In that moment, she knew that herself and her children were next. That weeping was not only for her husband's death, but for her three children and herself. Without a doubt, a part of herself died that day and it is truly heartbreakingly beautiful.

It takes so much more to see their humanity and break the cycle. That's what this movie is about. Not the magic, but the love between very broken people who overcome their grief, experiences, hardships to become better people as one family.

She is incredible, you could see the strong emotion of losing the love of her life but she still had to be strong for her children, it was very evident in the scene where she looks at her children and swallows her suffering And I moved on for the family
I think as a Colombian, what makes this song hit even harder is that this is a representation of the many civil wars that Colombia has endured. It’s heartbreaking to think about how many Colombians lived through those horrible times and probably prayed for their own miracle 😔
This movie is similar to my family. My grandfather was a Colombian senator who was assassinated by surrogates of Escobar. My grandma fleed Colombia to the United States with her 3 children, in our case 2 sons and a daughter. My dad was the youngest son, married my American mom, and I was born.

I love how this song shows how the black shawl she wears the entire time is a mourning shawl. She had been stuck with the pain of the past, figuratively and almost literally mourning her husband for decades instead of looking forward.

And by the very end of the movie, she no longer needs the shawl symbolizing that she is finally ready to come to grips with her trauma and begin the healing process. That dead stare she gives somehow more realistically shows the immediate grief that occurs after the sudden loss of a loved one than anything I’ve ever really seen animated. Just the disbelief and numbness that occurs the for the time that directly after the incident. The cries of agony were also painfully well done. There’s so much emotion in just how they animated this small bit of the movie
AGREED. With how it was told in the intro, it kinda threw me off because I was like “Huh. Well she is telling it to a grandchild, but I still thought it would be sad.” I still thought it was good but as soon as the flashback started, I knew what was gonna happen but I WAS NOT ready for how raw it felt. For how painful it looked. After the scene all I could think of “Where was this Disney?! This true interpretation of loss, pain and heartbreak?!” Heck, Elsa didn’t even look that destroyed when she though Anna was gone. Disney did amazing and I hope this scene wins the award.
💯 that scene gives such a real and raw view of grief. And when she stands and walks thru the door, it was almost like you could see those walls building up because of her fear of losing the rest of her family.
It really hits even harder to us Colombians. We grew up hearing stories like this, after 70 years of war and forced displacement like it’s shown in the movie (Colombia is the country with the highest number of internal displaced people/refugees in the entire world.) most Colombian families see themselves reflected in this scene. My own grandma told me how her family had to come to the city leaving their town after her dad was being chased by the other side. Disney really did a remarkable and touching work of really depicting reality and accurately representing our struggles.

I was aware of the tragedies that the movie was referencing but I can’t imagine what it must have been like to hear these same stories from those who experienced it and I’m glad the movie was able to properly represent the horrors the people of your country had to go through. I don't know any Spanish but I teared up when I heard the song for the very first time (and... following few times). I think its very beautiful that you don't need to understand Spanish because the song is so well-written and well executed that you still emotionally understand the message. I love how the singer was able to slowly turn the somewhat sweet and light hearted atmosphere into this heavy and crushing sadness. For me, personally, the Spanish version is more fitting than the English version, I just love it so much.

My family went through the same. My great grandparents were displaced from their homelands. My great grandfather died of sadness after losing everything he worked his entire live for. My great grandmother took take of everything and everybody. This is the reality of thousands of Colombian families.

@@BDSYA00 Hi, I'm Colombian, this could be from two events, the first one is called La Guerra de los Mil Días (the war of a thousand days) it was a civil conflict where some people would be from the conservative party and other people from the liberal party, this occurred between 1899 and 1902, due to political discomforts, liberals would kill conservatives and vicebersa, if they knew one was from a certain political party they would kill you, so people would often leave their home, leave everything behind to start over again to try to avoid that when they were threatened. Then the other event is called La Violencia (The violence) and occurred between 1948 and 1958, again because of the liberal party and conservative party, and this is one of the reasons why forced displacement and the internal armed conflict exists here in Colombia, because, well, it's still happening for other reasons as well and it's a big deal. Thank you for asking by the way, it's really nice when people is interested in our history with good intentions :)

This just does such an amazing job at showing how a family trauma, unhealed and unprocessed, can really affect the family's relationships and health. Alma's trauma altered her perceptions from "Pedro died for our family" to the point where everyone in the family had to be *worthy* of Pedro's sacrifice. Hence the pressure, the perfectionist standards, and her treatment of Mirabel as less than. By never facing the pain and the loss and instead allowing it to become a family fairytale, not only does she distance herself from it emotionally, she also doesn't have to examine her perceptions because nobody dares to question the narrative. These are all extremely common ways the human brain deals with trauma, as are the repercussions seen in the film too; anxiety, isolation, mask-wearing, emotional repression, and dysfunctional family dynamics. Makes me wonder if they called on any of the psychology team they used for Inside Out again.

@@beelieboo oh heck yeah. I actually show Inside Out as a therapeutic tool because aside from the characters and the gizmos, it's pretty cutting-edge neuroscience. They had a psych team, a neurology team, and neurosurgeons all from top medical university faculties to consult with. It's the most realistic and yet relatable explanation of how memory storage, core beliefs/ memories, and memory formation all work, not to mention how trauma and depression can affect the brain and us. Really well done by Pixar.

I feel so utterly hurt that people can watch this scene, see her pain, know what this did to her, and call her a monster. Abuela was never a monster. She’s a hurt widow who’s so scared of losing the one thing that protected her family, that saved her and her community from harm, that she unknowingly put pressure on her family to keep it safe. She never meant to hurt anyone. And at the end of the day, she realized what she had done and was willing to make up for it.
Same... generational trauma is a tricky thing. We can see why people did things but sometimes we can't forgive them. But to disregard their trauma completely isn't fair either. And we can appreciate that Abuela took the steps to help her family which is something a lot of people never manage to do.

I love how humanizing and raw this part of the movie is, it doesn't try to make abuela and mirabel the good and bad guys, it actually shows REAL characterization and shows how abuela isn't some unredeemable villain but a complex and well meaning woman who was so afraid to lose everything a second time she held on TOO tight

It has been a while since I cried during a movie, let alone a musical. But this broke me, in such a beautiful and heartbreaking way, even without fully understanding all of the lyrics. I love how the crack in the mountain can also be interpreted as the whole Encanto opening up to reality. The Madrigal Family is like the heart of the Encanto. They pretended everything was perfect and protected the town the same way the mountains sealed away the Encanto. But when it breaks in half, it's seen as a weakness, leaving them exposed and vulnerable. But now it's viewed as a sign of change, of being open to internal conflict and reaching out to others. The same way the butterflies represent metamorphosis and change. I love it!
Sure. That's one way to look at it. But...
The Madrigals' powers are perfect in the worst case scenario if something (say a pathway opening up revealing their safe haven to the outside world) suddenly made them have to flee from their homes--again. Camilo and Antonio can use their powers for reconnaissance. Delores can hear the danger coming. Bruno can see it coming. Luisa can act as a protector. Pepa can literally create difficult terrain. Isabella can create natural camouflage, difficult terrain, or she can grow crops in a pinch. Julieta's food can keep them sustained and heal them while they're being pursued. The Miracle gave them a protective barrier because that's what this community of refugees needed at that moment. Now, the mountain is cracked and they're vulnerable to outside dangers once more so the Miracle also gave Abuela and the citizens of Encanto a Plan B in the form of the other Madrigals. Encanto being vulnerable makes me worried.
@@ehlonna86 oh, I totally get where you're coming from! I've seen other people connect their powers to how it would have helped Abuela and Pedro when they were younger. I love these connections! I was talking more symbolically but literally, yeah, it's a big weakness and probably a big adversity to get over. If they really wanted to, I'm sure they could make some sort of artificial barrier to fix it. But I love the discussion! Thanks for the perspective!

I wanna see a sequel where the deal with the consecuences of opening up, where the guerrilla and paramilitary groups come looking for resources and people like they always do
It would be an evolution of the Desplazamiento problem and it would face the Madrigals against a physical threat

Fun fact: the event in wich Abuelo and Abuela met, where many people were carrying candles, was the Festival de Las Velitas, a colombian religious festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. Candles are very associated with her in Colombia.

I love when books and movies have tiny details that are really amazing when discovered. Here’s one I just realized: Remember how earlier in the movie, Bruno said to “follow the butterfly” when they were doing the vision? Well, look at where the butterflies fly towards at the end of this song: through the mountain and back home. The butterflies lead them home.
I love the contrast in the opening and this scene.
We hear Abuela's voice in that opening scene, but whose thoughts are we seeing? Mirabel's. They're shadowy and dull until it gets to the part about the miracle, just as it would be for a child hearing a story like that.
But what happens at the end? The two are physically at the place where the miracle began - literally and metaphorically at the beginning. Mirabel sees the story with much more color. When it gets to the part she is familiar with, Mirabel is physically present in the memory. That's why she can say that she finally sees. She didn't see the woman grieving her heart out over the loss of her husband before. She saw a woman who got a great miracle and a happy ending.
But at the end, Mirabel watches Abuela's absolute shock, terror, and grief occur at the exact same time that her miracle goes to work. Abuela didn't care about the miracle at that moment, only about her loss.
Mirabel helped her finish grieving and finally appreciate the miracle for what it was, something born out of the pure love of Pedro and Alma.
It's just a beautiful story.

This scene was a game changer. Disney is finally stepping away from the pretty crying faces and gave us something raw. Her eyes were red, multiple tear lines were on her face and her face was pulled back in agony. That added so much emotion. Very well done. They earned my tears
What got me was how stretched her mouth was. You can't hear anything except for the song, but just from the shape of her mouth alone you can hear the most terrified, painful, blood curdling scream you could possibly imagine. Gut wrenching.
This scene is as touching and heartbreaking as the opening to the movie "Up".
Calling Abuela a villain is a mistake, she's not a villain, she's pretty much like Carl from "Up". She loved someone and lost that person in a very horrible way, leaving her all alone with her three babies. Yes, she was demanding and wanted everything to be perfect, but it's just what happens when you don't let go of the grief and let it consume you.
Carl at least lived most of his life with Ellie, and she seemed to die peacefully. Abuela and Pedro had only a short time together, and Abuela had to watch him be murdered. Both heartbreaking stories, but I'd argue Abuela's is worse because Carl and Ellie were able to enjoy each other for many years before she died of her illness.
No, sorry, it's no excuse. Carl hurt NOONE. Look at those three precious babies in her arms? Well, one of them spent 15 YEARS OF HIS LIFE hidden in the WALLS of the house because he couldn't be perfect enough for his mother. She's the vilain. THe most terryfying kind. A narcissist.
Sometimes people forget Abuela had to raise 3 children on her own, right after suffering a significant trauma, and without any kind of help except for the magic. I understand she did wrong, but always with the intention of keeping everyone safe.
With Carl it was a different story, he was grieving too but had not any kind of pressure on him.
@@barnagotte7297 This movie is about generational trauma. Abuela is not a villain. She's a woman with PTSD who ends up passing the trauma she experienced down out of her fear of it happening again. There's not really a villain in here - just a lot of very traumatized people
@@barnagotte7297 Carl hurt a kid. He was verbally abusive to that kid for half the movie. Also he only spent ten years. And she's not a narcissist because she ADMITS SHE CAUSED HARM. She was a traumatized woman who had no time to mourn, no closure of being able to bury her husband even, and three infants to care for with no one to help her. She felt the perfection was needed to pay respect for the miracle given to them. In trying to navigate with untreated PTSD, she ends up hurting her own family especially as time goes on. She thought she was doing what was best--but it wasn't. And she realized that after the foundation broke--a home built on the foundation of TRAUMA and LOSS. The rebuilt house is stronger for being built of love.
It's such a brief and short detail but I love mirabel's expressions in the scene where abuela falls to her knees. Not only the horror of truly understanding what happened, but of finally seeing abuela as the young woman who hurt so much, not just as her stoic demanding grandmother. It's hard to picture family members you've known your whole life any younger or different than they are, I love her expression as she fully realizes and empathizes with abuela's pain. Incredible visual story-telling.
Not only is this one of the best songs in the movie; my personal favorites being, "What Else Can I Do?," "The Family Madrigal" and "Waiting On a Miracle," but it's the way Mirabel is interwoven into Alma's flashback and sees what her grandmother experienced, for herself. I especially love Mirabel's expression at 1:54.
The utter heartbreak and compassion on her face as she watches Alma collapse to the ground in tears, after seeing Pedro get killed before her very eyes is brilliant and relatable. That, along with Mirabel comforting Alma and their reconciliation amongst a swarm of butterflies flying around them, is what sells the scene for me.
I cannot even begin to describe how much of an impact "Encanto" has had on me throughout the last couple years. Mirabel's compassion and relatability is why I love her character so much. This scene is proof of that. Walt Disney Pictures outdid themselves with this film.
The part of "I forgot who our miracle was for," always makes me tear up. The look on poor Mirabel's face, the fear and uncertainty. It breaks my heart that when she felt so small and vulnerable, her grandmother didn't comfort her like she was suppose to.
I haven’t seen anyone point this out but the scene where Abuja Alma is sitting down with her 3 babies plays such a big roll in her character development. She’s a new mom with infant triplets, lost her home, saw the murder of the love of her life all in 1 day. Despite the grief & pain she felt in the moment, she still got up, grab her coat, & walked out the door symbolizing that she got to work to create a future & provide a home for her children & community the best she could with what she had mentally & emotionally. I see many people making a villain out of Abuela Alma, I can understand and see why, but she’s only human & just in much of needing healing as everyone else. I don’t condone the way she treats her family at all! I just understand why she did what she did.

I totally understand ... Traumatic events cause many people to act in ways that perhaps they did not expect, and when you lose not only your home, but also the love of your life and Besides, you are a mother with very young children ... Well I think we would do the same as Alma, try to protect your children and keep you signed as far as you can, even if you know that you are so hurt and depressed ... And worst of all, I think that in a country where this type of thing happens a lot, then showing vulnerability to those who depend on you, it is not an option.

Thank you, Disney, not only for honoring displaced people everywhere, but also for honoring Gabriel García Márquez and his yellow butterflies. I can't help but get teary eyed when I watch this heart wrenching scene.

I love how this movie has no real villain. It's just a bunch of people who are trying to live with expectations, judgement from both family and community, and how they can come together as a whole. It just also happens to have magic involved. It feels more like a slice of life kind of movie. Not your typical Disney flick and I actually like that. You don't always have to be special in order to stand out. I like that message.

Every now and then, Disney has the balls to show real-world tragedies such as this. Even though _La Guerra de los Mil Días_ was before my time, it's a part of my people's history and harshest realities that sadly hasn't ended. Looking at what Alma and Pedro went through really hit home for us Colombianos.

What I adore about this movie is that there is no ‘boss fight’, no villain. Just a cathartic conversation between two great characters finding redemption.
Abuela is the vilain. She's horrible. I hate that this song makes us feel for her when she's been nothing but abusive for 50 years.
@@barnagotte7297 Life really isn't as black and white, neither is Abuela as you are trying to portray. She felt that she had to live up to the opportunity that she was given and expectations that the village had. However, a person's good intentions doesn't necessarily make them a good person. In this case, it wounded up negatively affecting the family in the end.

I must say, this song is truly the most underrated of all songs in Encanto. Sebastián Yatra did a great job perfoming the song, and Lin-Manuel Miranda did a great job writing.

I honestly don't know why, but when all of the yellow butterflies start to fly around Alma and Mirabel, it makes me cry so damn hard. And I already cried plenty on this movie, but there's something so majestical about that scene, it just bursts all of the emotions within me.

@@vacarlos It's because Pedro's spirit "lives" when the family loves each other. I still think the Casita/candles enchantment was Pedro all along. His "life" fizzled away when everyone was fighting one another. He "chose" Mirabel to continue the next page for Casita once grandma passes away. Maribel's door was always the entrance door to the whole house but no one ever realized it. He was guiding them back home after the reconciliation by the river with the butterflies 🥺 that's why it's so magical. Pedro is a character that's there the whole time during the movie it's frigging genius!

As a colombian myself, this scene is and will remain one of my favorite Disney scenes of all time. It's so powerful and straight forward with things that are sadly a reality in our country like families being forced to leave their home due to armed conflicts. But at the same time, it makes Alma a relatable and complex character that even reminded me of my grandma, at which point, you know they did a great job. The song is also just amazing, touching and deserving of all praise. My eyes can't help but tear up at this masterpiece.
Anyone who says, this movie upsets them because Mirabel “allowed” her family to be toxic to her and was just ok with an apology… DID NOT TRULY WATCH this movie… toxicity in a family is a cycle… at some point you have to break that cycle… or it will continue to live on for generations…. Accepting an apology is not a weakness, and it’s not for the person who you are accepting it from. The apology is for YOU… for you to let go and keep moving forward.. for you to forgive and LEARN what not to do next time… this movie MOVED me on so many levels… being the “black sheep” I know the feeling and I’m sure some of you do to.. understand where it comes from and FORGIVE.. ❤

Lo paradógico es que muchas de las cosas que ven pueden parecer mágicas, pero son reales, por ejemplo: la comida es tan importante para nosotros, que muchas de nuestras abuelas y madres curan con ella. Yo he curado múltiples veces a mi hija con un caldo de pollo hecho por mi madre.
