South African rugby fan here. Louis Rees is a special talent, the decision to shift codes was a shock but considering the situation welsh rugby is in rn, it makes sense. And he grew up watching NFL so he's got something in store for the world

@@LJClark1974 Pretty easy to get open in the backfield. But he will likely follow the Tyreek Hill route, start as a special teams player while easing into the WR role starting from the backfield. I don't imagine he will be running routes early on much beyond sweeps or screens or as a motion distraction. "Getting open" won't really be much of a thing.

Watching football and understanding it is a lot different from standing on the field and reading defenses, understanding timing in blocking schemes, tracking the ball in flight etc. the field looks entirely different when you’re standing on it. Not to mention the speed of an NFL game is twice that of a college game. I hope he does well and goes far but he has a hell of a steep learning curve to conquer.

Karloftis didn't even play football till he moved to the U.S, which was when he was 13-14. Mahomes didn't play football till his junior year of high school. One of the Chiefs TEs early in the Mahomes era was a basketball player who went to the combine with a friend who was invited was mistakenly put through the drills because someone thought that he was there as a part of the TE group - he hadn't played much football after high school.
Chiefs aren't afraid to take a chance on guys who have less experience playing the game but have the talent needed to play and developing that talent.
Surprised you didn't bring up 6'8, 360+ pound (all muscle) rugby player, Jordan Mailata, who came from Australia with ZERO football knowledge and is now a top left tackle and still only 26 years old!

As a Welshman I was disappointed he left rugby to try his hand at NFL, as Wales is one of the smallest rugby countries and can't afford to lose players of his quality from our national team. That said I wish him well and hope he achieves his ambitions as he is big, fast and exciting to watch

I've always wondered why special teams coaches didn't just grab a couple rugby guys and treat ko returns as a scrum play. New rule change opens this option up.

Yup, NFL rookie min will be $795,000 in 2024. According to Google, highest paid rugby player in the world is Finn Russell at $1.3 million per season.
Close to worst case would be you become a practice squad guy and you were projected to be an average rugby player then it’s $12,000 per week (for player who were < 2 years) vs the average salary for professional rugby player in the UK is apparently about $137,000. If you make practice squad for 12 weeks per season then you’re already above the average rugby player in UK
Not to mention access to a bigger market and you can even become a person in your niche (UK player for example)

Having played rugby as a kid then American football at university in the UK, the biggest shock was just the play speed when the ball is snapped and how you have to instantly go from static and relaxed to full speed and aggro. Also more depressing news as a wales fan ffs

Speaking of basketball players transitioning to football... Brian Thomas Jr was a high school basketball star who didn't play football until his sophomore year... After 68 receptions for 1,177 yards & 17 touchdowns in college - he's still getting better. 📈

For the boys on rugby union speed and where you find it. Outside backs (wingers and the fullback) power runners will normally be in the centres. Your tight end style players will be your loose forwards (flankers and number 8).
The 40 time will get better with specialisation and the change in requirement from being able to be constantly on the move covering the ground tackling and participating in the breakdown to a maximum effort once every 40 seconds.
An interesting crossover and I hope he does well I think we all do. Mialata as an o lineman was a league prop and mountain of a man.
I’d be interested to see what could happen with the loose forwards as d lineman or the odd second rower that’s athletic a d lineman.
He’s Welsh, from Wales - one of the countries in Great Britain. It even has its own parliament. He played for Gloucester Rugby and has been one of the biggest players for Wales, making a massive impact in the Six Nations and World Cup tournaments. It’s sad to lose him from WRFU but it’ll be good to see him play NFL.
As a rugby player , ive always been saying that we need to involve rugby passing with wide receivers and tight ends. It would completely evolve the game to create two one one situations with two wide receivers down field
The problem is that there’s rarely enough time or space for it to become a regular facet of the game. I love seeing laterals but the risk vs reward plus lack of space makes them so rare.
It's about ball security. A lateral is a live ball. If a defender slaps it then it's a fumble and the defence run towards where swarms to the ball so usually there will be more defenders around a fumble and in football the most important thing is possession of the ball
@@reddvsbluee22 offenses are capable of figuring out how to open up space for laterals to be a viable option. If the chiefs have success with this guy and incorporate laterals into their offense, this could end up being one of the most pivotal seasons in NFL history with more rugby influence in the league.
For the occasional one, sure. But you screw it up and the offense is off the field. Like I said, I’d love to see it more and love it when it happens, but there’s no way it ever becomes a staple in an offense unless you’re running something like the Georgia tech triple option (my high school team ran it and it was super fun) but the lateral usually occurs at or near the line of scrimmage. We’ll see a few a year I hope, but my bet is no more than that. The guy above mentioning ball security is dead on the money.
Just don't underestimate - He's giving up being an elite Rugby player to try and make it in the NFL. That's a big sacrifice. And listening to him and his father (I'm in Ireland) He's always had this dream to play in the NFL. If he's as coachable as I think he is his talent will shine through and this may be a masterstroke. I expect it to be.
I'm surprised more teams aren't scoping the Pacific Islander Rugby squads. You want to see some thiccc dudes running stupid fast? Look at highlights from the Fiji squad, they have some monster athletes. And of course the All Blacks from New Zealand have their fair share of Maori dudes who are massive human beings moving very quickly. Yeah, *it'll be different once this guy is up against NFL talent*, but you can see just in those training videos he has good movement and really good hands already.

I went to high school with a guy in new Zealand who was Maori played rugby and was scoutef to a US university and ended up playing 10 years as an offensive lineman for the vikings.... Long before mialata.

Jarryd Hayne (rugby league player in australia) played for 49ers for less than a season but had a great preseason he couldnt match against the top tier guys. Valentine Holmes also a league player played for practise squad New York Jets.Both are similar to this dude in style , frame and skills background

The combine is mostly for show now, especially the 40. Nobody really cares about those times. They have way better metrics to study for scouting. Most major college teams are tracking player movement in real time during games and can send that data to NFL Scouts. Thats what determines game speed.

Rugby players are all shapes and sizes. The forwards are huge. The locks are tall. The wingers are fast and athletic, the scrum-half is usually small for playing the ball off the ground.
OL and DL aren't "fat". they're freaking monster athletes who eat until they're sick of eating, then eat more to get that padding and bulk. makes them harder to block or move. soon as these guys retire, they slim down into in season basketball player shape. it's incredible.

It's 50/50. Some of the lineman still stay active and cut their diet and drop alot of weight. Other lineman when they retire become inactive, don't eat as much but still a significant amount and just become fat. It's unfortunate.

He was a journeyman. He only played 2 seasons of pro rugby his whole career and never reached the pinnacle of the sport.
Would love to see LRZ do well. He’s a phenomenal athlete and a grounded kid.

Good idea with the kick off rule changes
The biggest diffence between NFL and both League and Union is Power and speed. NFL is based on short sprints, short plays and long breaks. Hence 40 yard stats, so burst speed is needed to outrun defender.
The other 2 forms are almost look for a balance of endurance and speed, as in reality the best of the best players are playing offence/defence for 80 minutes a game.
Now before you all say Union and League has so many breaks in play, its as slow as heck. Do the maths. League/Union 80 minute game, Usually around 110 minutes run time. Call it 30 mins of stoppage including halftime period.
NfL 60 minutes of game with a runtime of 190 minutes of runtime. So around 2 hours of stoppage. In fact all codes actually only have very minimal "Ball in play" minutes. Union around 38, League at 52 and NFL at a paltry 14 minutes.
Apologies for the rant, but in the end its fairly difficult to actually get the point across.
Side note: back when Seattle and the Boom were on top, theyd hired some Coaches and players from Fiji i think to help with their tackling.

8:06 this is something I'm glad pat touched on. In elementary school my principal would play football with us kids during lunch. It was 2 hand touch on a large field but not 100 yds. Due to the sheer amount of kids on the field at once,weird but legal "techniques" started to happen. Kids would toss the ball up into the air as they were being 2 hand touched and because technically they did not posses the ball, they were not called down. Obviously this would not work in tackle football but it evolved into advanced pitching/ toss plays during plays. Essentially every play had a chance to become a hook and ladder or and option. Imagine the chiefs with a dedicated shadower always ready to catch a toss. This could the next level of football. I'm here for it
Rugby Union and Rugby League are similar but different games. This guy is a Rugby Union player. Mailata was a Rugby League player.

LRZ is defo a top 20 speedster in rugby. But the thing with rugby is speed endurance. He can run full speed for 100 yards.

Big guys don't lose as much MPH when putting on pads. Smaller guys lose more. It a physics thing...percentage of total weight.
As a wide receiver the two biggest differences will be catching with a helmet and shoulder pads. Because the face mask gets in your way and the ball will bounce off of the chest protector and not absorb the ball like it will on your chest. I'd see him be more natural as a deep back or a safety. wide receivers in the NFL are tall and fast and know how to run int empty spaces. There is a big learning curve.
DB in the nickel, that can still hit the RB. And probably KR/3rd RB

Also, your totally accurate stating he’ll be a ST unicorn👍🏼 Plus, the “drop-hip” tackle has been banned in rugby for a longtime, so he brings a LOT to the Chiefs Brain trust too🧠✍🏼 As a 60+yr old Chiefs freak, I love the move as the Chiefs always seem to be a step ahead of the upcoming offseason NFL play & rule changes That’s why they continue to dominate the league. For the last decade, the entire “team” at ONE Arrowhead Drive created the foundational organization that has us where we are today…DYNASTY(🏆➕)🏆🏆🏆 If the Chiefs can 3-peat this season, will anybody not believe they are the Greatest NFL Team of All-time?! The rugby ball 🏉 is rounder, larger and the leather is different compared to the football 🏈, fwiw - so the bounce is larger and it's easier to grab on the run at pace. Even my unathletic butt was able to do it as a kid playing rugby.
I have been a fan of both games all my life. I'm really interested in seeing how this turns out, hope it goes great 👍

@@felixrodriguez7423He certainly has hands, he's a #14 in rugby, meaning he plays on the wings and essentially fields their version of punts and kickoffs. The question is going to be the route running.

This is also the first rugby player that was actually good and played “Union”. The other guys were average “League” players which is a less popular and different form of rugby that nobody cares about.
To be fair Jarryd Hayne played a couple of pre season snaps and he was one of the best league players of the time.

Brit here ✋, not many rugby players have tried to changeover it’s usually been older guys who are not as accomplished. There’s a lot of good athletes and there’s definitely bigger and quicker guys than LRZ but he’s a good athlete. If he’s successful I’m certain a lot of young rugby players will start entering the IPP program
The main reason the transition is hard is in rugby, you have to defend as well as attack, you’re whole job as a winger is not just to run fast and run routes, you have to defend, tackle too arms you don’t get to rest off the field so you have to have good cardio and not just operate in small bursts
Jared Haynes was the MVP of the New Zealand rugby league, and was considered one of the best rugby players in the world at the time, and still couldn’t do much in the league

even if they are that doesn't mean they are going out of their way to look at europe. Canada plays their own version of Grid Iron that has differences but is way more mutually intelligible with American Football than Rugby is. Like yea, the field is a bit bigger and the downs are different and theres an extra guy on the field in Canadian football, but the way the game is structured and flows is largely the same especially when compared to something like rugby where the pacing is fundamentally different.
