I legit thought that ditto being failed clones of mew was a canon fact, so I sat here for a solid 5 minutes watching, thinking “doesn’t everyone already know this though?”
Yeah this was intended implications from all the way back to fire red.
Ditto was never implied to be failed clones of Mew simply related to it somehow. For all we know Mew & Mewtwo naturally shed the things from their bodies, which is a rival theory. Even after destroying the place Mewtwo probably still visits the Cinnabar Mansion to make more dittos, which is why an unlimited amount exist there assuming they don't just randomly divide themselves. Ditto Experiment Theory doesn't explain why the Dittos appear in places that have nothing to do with Mewtwo's Creation.
Yeah, I also thought this was just straight up canon, but it’s a fact I would’ve read in maybe like, the Pokédex toy, or a Nintendo of America magazine 25 years ago. Something I know as fact but don’t know where I got that fact…
@@WaterKirby1994 My theory is mytosis, Dittos are as close as "sentient raw genetic material" as it gets (Eevee eat your heart out), with more in common with cells than other animals (Pokemons). So it wouldn't sound out of reach for Ditto to, rather than reproduce, to replicate themselves once they have absorbed enough nutrients

I want to point out that Ditto can transform by memory, according to the pokedex, however It manages to get details wrong. With enough training a ditto might be able to transform into anything by memory

@@buttereo6277 Getting that to work though is probably very, very difficult, if not just an inefficient use of time (limit approaches infinity type difficult)-----since as Matpat stated
there are not ANY cases where any Ditto----trained or untrained have ever done that in the entire franchise (anime, game, etc)----you'd expect not one, but at least 2-3 of these special Ditto to exist if this was something you could feasibly 'simply train for.'

@@extremepokegamer4037 Doesn't mean you can't battle one with Transform via other means. Supra did a Pokemon Yellow Randomizer Nuzlock and his encounter for the Route South of Cerulean was Mew, it used Transform and he caught it and it turned into a Ditto

No no no. Obviously what happened is the Sonic Team Company were trying to restore the time honored tradition of bad video game movies.
For decades video game movies have baffilingly disregarded the lore. Despite the fact they were literally spoon fed an already made script and universe they tried to make their own with no connection to the original. Detective Pikachu broke that tradition but Sonic Team weren't willing to see it die. They aren't a stupid company unable to understand something as simple as being faithful to the original. They are heroes of tradition fighting to preserve the old ways we all know and love.

I always considered it canon since I was introduced to Ditto so when this video came out, I was so confused, "Is Ditto being a failed clone not actually canon?". Then I realized that I was way ahead of this video.
I haven't seen the Detective Pikachu film cause I don't care for live action adaptation films. But did know of the Ditto/Mew/Mewtwo connection since first played Yellow/Red/Blue in early 2000s

This is a classic theory, Ditto being failed Mew clones, and one I love. It's my personal headcanon. But I think one of the creators of the original games said that it was never an intention, just a lot of coincidences. And while the person who said this was primarily a composer, many of the small team who worked on those first games said that, due to the small team, every member was involved in every part of the game, composers would help out with coding and vice versa, so I think he still would have a lot of knowledge of the lore stuff.

What if they was trying recreate mew and someone was like: "if mew genes have genes of all pokemons, lets take genes of all pokemons and combine them together" and it failed as shapeless purple goo with ability too transform in every other pokemon as mew do, and they was like: "nah, its don't really looks like a mew, so, lets just say that this is a new unknown pokemon and trow him away"

Pokémon Go also had a say in this when mew came out. One of the challenges before catching mew were to catch a bunch of Ditto because of their incredibly similar feature of shapeshifting. Seems like the professors know something we don’t.

yea totally, they were doing genetic experiments on other pokemon too like the Torterra so why couldn't they have just also done experiments on dittos too. and why would the experiments on Mewtwo create a super ditto this time rather than just a normal ditto like the ones before? they probably just enhanced a regular ditto like they did with the torterra

@@balamugunthbalaji8110 May be true. Pokédex entries say that there is transformation from memory and they could just enhance it. But the thing is that the anime is not the canon, we just haven't seen it transforming using memory in games (I do not recall any trainer having Ditto, wild Ditto just doesn't seem like he has enough desire to win this battle to think of some other pokémon that may be useful against trainer's one and maybe in-game trainer just haven't trained his Ditto to be reliable enough when transforming from memory and therefore there is no such option).
It would be really nice to have that option in newer games, maybe make it canonical, like train memory with Ditto and after he reaches certain level in memory training, he would remember, for example, 1 pokémon he transformed into and with every memory training level, he would remember one more or something similar.
How exactly could every experiment to make a Mewtwo end up with this same Ditto? If there were many experiments, every one of them may have ended up in Ditto (some ustable genes in a shapeless form), but every Ditto may be unique in his own way and this "super Ditto" may be just some classic Ditto that was made in later stages of Mew cloning, so he has better memory than any "older Ditto", but still genetically unstable (so in a form of Ditto). Or his memory has been trained for 20 years (trained pokémon are stronger than wild ones), all it takes really is just to play some games with him every day and then try if his transformation from memory got any better.
There has to be a way how that details-wrong-when-transformating-from-memory thing got in pokédex entries in the first place.

@RooByrne at least in the games when transformed it will copy all stats except HP, and with a very low base 48 HP stats it will have less HP than just about every legendary
The whole "this ditto being a genetic experiment" doesn't seem to work because all of the Pokémon in that lab were genetic experiments with significantly stronger traits, so it isn't really too far fetched for them to just find a way to boost ditto's abilities
It'd still be a genetic experiment as they're experimenting with genetics! Making stronger pokemon is changing genes to get the result you want..it's genetic experimentation.

MatPat, I think you are actually wrong in your theory. Not about the relation between these pokemon, but calling Ditto as "A failed Mew Clone". Let me explain:
If ditto is supposed to be a FAILED clone of mew, why is there more than one ditto?
Think about it. If they see there was a mistake, they would have rearranged some parameters and try again. If it failed again, it would be very weird if the result is again, a ditto. It should be another thing, since parameters would be different.
My theory is that ditto is actually a SUCCESSFUL clone.
If what the scientists wanted was a strong pokemon... Mew isn't a game changing choice! There are lots of other legendary pokemon that are way stonger that it.
But what if the experiment was looking for something that ONLY MEW HAS?
That's right, I'm talking about the transform capacity mew has. This would explain the existance of many dittos that don't have a change between them.
Maybe the actual failed clone is actually MEWTWO!
Yes, I think that because of a mistake in creating dittos, the creation became unstable, thing that made the scientists keep an eye on it more. But you don't see any keeping a eye on your supposed " failed clone" ditto.
The investigation and cloning came to an end when mewtwo exited its chaimber: the real FAIL of Mew's clonation.
Mewtwo, one of the most beloved pokemon, might actually be an artificial experiment gone WRONG. And your slaved daycare ditto, might actually be the true objective of mew's cloning.
BUT HEY, that's just a theory, on a GAME THEORY.

Yeah i always thought it was a fact but i started in firered and watched the anime.
Another possibility aside from the ditto being the original is that it was trained to overcome that limitation. In the animes there are a few moments where Ash and the group encounter trainers doing just this and succeeding. GymLeaders who have pokemon who can tolerate what they are weak against and so forth. It could be that he had the ditto transform into the specific pokemon for hours even years to copy what it saw while performing other transformation of the same pokemon behind a curtain/screen until they got it right. If this pokemon is in fact part of the mew and mew two then it would make sense if the original was passed along which would allow this to be possible.
However, like the description claims for the pokemon entry for ditto, they get details wrong. Well, maybe it isnt just the eyes like the ditto in the anime. It could be something else that was wrong but didnt exactly show in the physique. Like the pokemons stats, abilities, and strengths/weaknesses. The ditto might make a mirror image at the start but is it truly a copy or is there a reason the shapes it takes dont do what the original can do?
My first thought when i started watching this was that maybe ditto wasn't a product of experimentation but what they were experimenting on. Maybe ditto already existed and they were trying to use it's genes to help create Mewtwo .

This is one big reason why I love your videos and wouldn’t be the best theorist because if I saw the ditto in that tower where they cloned and enhanced mew I would have just thought that they used ditto as a way to understand and use DNA splicing/replication/regeneration to make mew-two I would never have thought they were failed clones that didn’t come out as planned.

AND THEN, the Sonic movie was greaaat
So one of the fun theories I had read a long while back was trying to place every single Pokémon in a timeline and came up with Mew being the ancestor to most of not all non legendary/mythic ones. For me, it seems more like normal dittos aren't experiements (or they were a long time ago that has since been forgotten about) but Howard experimented on dittos as well as the other pokémons. It seems as though Howard's ditto has a perfect memory and can read minds. Since mewtwo can transfer minds, I'd say the ditto is either an experiment to create a new mewtwo some time in those 20 years mewtwo was missing, or Howard used knowledge from experimenting on mewtwo to enhance the ditto.

Pokemon. It started out when I saw the third episode of Pokemon Indigo
League and Misty says: "I hate bugs, even if they are Pokemon." That
suggest that there are bugs in that world that AREN'T Pokemon. I mean,
it's Pokemon. Those should be the only animals that exist in this world.
But sure enough, later in the episode, we see a Pidgey eat a worm. Not a
Weedle, not a Wurmple, not a Caterpie, a straight-up worm. And later,
we see when Ash tries to capture Mankey, who throws a rice ball to
deflect it, the Pokeball captures the rice ball. Pokeballs are only
supposed to capture Pokemon... unless they aren't. Imagine this. A
scientist unveils his latest creation: A storage device that transforms
physical matter... into computer data. (This is how Pokeballs work,
which is how Pokemon can be stored on computers) He throws the ball at a
camel, but upon releasing the camel from the ball, he discovers that
the camel has volcanoes on its back. Some people, trying to control
pollution, use the magnificent Pocket Ball to store garbage
indefinitely, but the garbage comes to life. A Pokeball is used to
remove a stump with the spirit of a dead child in it and mutates it into
the creature known as Phantump. Pokeballs store things, and then mutate
them into Pocket Monsters. This also explains how only four moves can
be stored in a Pokemon at a time, how Porygon exists, and why new
species are being discovered in new regions every few years. MatPat, if

There is a theory that there was a war which parallels the real life situation of wars where most men (including fathers) left to go to war. Most never came back and some are just survivors.
Thats one of the biggest theories of pokemon to why we never see their dads, their dads could be dead due to the war

For clarity there is a theory that dittos are failed clones of Mew. Evrything in this movie point more toward it being shapeshifter, so I'm not sure if that prove anything? As Mew transformation is based on fact that he is literally first pokemon and as such he has DNA of them all (including Arceus..eghm).

Another example of dittos limitation of transformation is when team rocket showed a picture of a dragonair to a ditto expecting him to transform into a dragonair but ditto just transformed into the picture. Can't tell you which episode it was tho but it gotta be in the early seasons

Pokemon Yellow was actually the first pokemon game I played. I actually managed to get a copy before it's official release because the store was out of red and blue but had just received their shipments of yellow, so they let me have that instead.
As such I didn't realise ditto didn't spawn in the lab in the other two games, and I put the connection between mew and ditto together myself. I always thought it was cannon and was super confused when I started hearing 'theories' about it.
Ditto is my favourite.
