- We visited photographer Patrick Brown to talk about his forthcoming book, Trading to Extinction, which documents the illegal trade of endangered animals in Asia. We then travel with Brown to Guangzhou, China, where he finishes his decade-long project.

Patrick, this was truly moving, I am saddened by what is happening yet inspired by your work. I am glad Vice was able to document your travels. I am looking forward to your book.
Thank you Vice for finally uploading a education and entertaining video it's felt like forever
amazing job man...so inspiring ! keep it up!
The reason he gave for choosing black and white just blew my mind!
What was the reason?
@Boel B 15:10
@Boel B - 0% true, what were u listening to while watching this?
The really simple reason of being color blind n taught to use black n white film? WOAHHHH
So profound ! B+w really does send a simple message about what is depicted in a snap shot of life!
This guys work is amazing! So hauntingly beautiful! 😍
This is great! Thank you for your work and dedication, Patrick and thanks to Vice for documenting this.
LEAVE THE TURTLES ALONE
ghostofdayinperson
Sadly they are a culture that doesn’t have a lot of empathy
agree
They are soft shelled river turtles and native tortoises, they breed like crazy and are easy to farm. Calm down.
@@johnsm3568 I don't care, leave the freaking turtles alone. Would you want me to hunt down your family?
Didn't think so.
vice is really a kickass video-journalism company. Appreciate your work guys, thanks.
I love when vice uploads vids like these! Don't stop doing what your doing vice!!!
There's no money in stopping animal trading, if it were oil it would be a different ball game na.
I was with you up to the "these people are the intellectual infancy of our species" part. The thing is, you have to feel some empathy for the situation these poachers, smugglers, and traders find themselves in. They may be ignorant and naive, but at the end of the day, they are just trying to make a living. Some have to suppress their feelings of guilt so that their family can eat. Furthermore, it's supply and demand. As long as there are customers, these people will continue their trade.
these kind of documentarys are the reason I subscribed vice
Amazing piece of film, and a great project! Very inspirational!
Well made documentary, we need whistleblowers like this photographer, but more than that we need somebody to convince those hunters and tradesman to stop doing what they do.
Ano Nymous or even better, educate the buyers of the product. No buyers = no hunters or trade people.
"No photos!" While some guy is filming it all....
Had to look away at some parts. However, great film, and congrats on your book. The B&W photos grew on me after a while.
One of the best vice has ever put out no doubt.
I want his book
So sad to watch this now that the Coronavirus is spreading. Poor animals.
It's perhaps the singular revenge they can enact upon us. Inadvertently and unintended as it is. The diseases that afflict them, that can also infect us, may be these poor animals saving grace. The only thing that can discourage people from these practices.
Wow this is great. Hopefully Vice goes back to these type of documentaries/videos.
Another great video Vice... Gratz
1:35 "white people spicy" lol
🥺
This is just dam right cruel
great documentary. Good job on helping get people aware!
Vice you did it again. great documentary, I got to say I want these to be longer every time, try and extend your foreign documentaries, I want more on this guy, the north korea dude from a while ago was awesome to.
He's done alot in his life, what a wonderful man Patrick Brown I will remember that name.
Word? Bet you forgot tbh
"How spicy?"
"Uhh, white people spicy"
Too funny.
Great work documenting this!
good documentary, this is the kind of stuff i subscribe to vice for
he speaks very good Thai
long time getting to the gist
Finally, after a long break of Vice, something worth while of watching.
He's an amazing photographer. His photos are beautiful. I helped at a zoo for the day when I did job shadowing. I can tell you the Mesker Park Zoo here in Evansville is legit. They focus on trying to breed the animals along with giving the animals the best care they can to help the animal species to not go extinct. I also helped to prepare the animal diets for them. The animals there eat amazing. I've met all kinds of animals. We even have a rhino who paints pictures on a canvas. I went there twice to job shadow. Some of the most fun I've ever had.
And now we have covid-19
A true blessing, it's about time, but this Is still not enough. Humans worldwide need culling. They've all bred way to much
@@Lucas-jr2wo you do realize your a human
@Lucas you are a prime example of over breeding
future generations will see all these magnificent animals in photos and movies, and wonder why we let them go extinct.
one of the best vice videos i've seen.
Thank you for making this 🙏🙏
I wish I had the motivation, and the money, to live a life of travel and happiness.
I feel bad for the animals 😤😤☹️☹️😔😔
Oh yeah? Well imagine how THEY feel
@@haydenjuseyo6408 what???
the elephant in hand-cuffs is truly a great, sad photograph...this is brilliant work.
Vice is an unbelievable youtube channel, amazing videos.
Btw white tigers ARE NOT an endangered spieces they're a extremely inbred hybrid between bengals and siberian/amur tigers white tigers are just a lusistic tiger they're not their own spieces one has not been seen in the wild in many decades the last one seen is actually related to every white tiger alive in captivity today.
White Tigers are still a Tiger so they are endangered.
Yes, an elephant in a zoo IS a prisoner, but an elephant in the wild is - very probably- a dead elephant, and this is what people fail to see.
Exactly! Thank you
I do of course blame humans for the death of these innocent creatures!
Yes but people act like having animals in captivity is so terrible because they should be in "the wild" they dont understand that the wild is dissapearing and these animals are hunted and poached in what is left of the wild
Jared .M
That is very true and I wholeheartedly agree with you. The only problem is that more people need to realize this and come to the fact that we need to stop with this destruction. An example is palm oil fields in Malaysia where almost 3/4 of all orangutans have been wiped out due to the destruction of their homes (the forest), and all of that so that a country could have a little bit more energy?? It drives me crazy what humans have become!
Exactly, but people are also too quick to assume its the big businesses all the time, it's often the mass numbers of third world farmers using slash and burn agriculture methods
YAY VICE THANKS YOU FOR PUTTING UP THINGS I CAN LEARN FROM AGAIN! I love you guys videos i learn so much
One of the best Vice episodes lately.
Stop crying about what chinese people do when we all are responsible for this, for being part of a must consume society, capitalism, always have to have more, have to be the richest, all materialistic thinking, and the first country to preach that is the u.s.
China is communist you dumb fuck
PoteNoob stfu
There is definitely sum ting wong here.
God Damnit
I know exactly where that’s from and I’m going to hell for laughing 😂
he's so softly spoken ...seems so wise
Great video! Loved it!
White people spicy lol!!!
That was your Takeaway...lol
Great documentary, great photographer.

Good doc , interesting life , provoking subject , best 20 mins I spent today
I love vice because of stuff like this. it's so creative.
i like that you typed "sigh..." to really tell em how riled up you are
Very powerful documentary. Thank you
Patrick Brown, you are a hero for doing what you do.
The world needs more people like you!
Keep up the good work!
Insipiring video.
I just love Vice.
actually i find all the background music used by vice's videos are extremely nice...
nice photo documentary vice!staff like that may make people to think more...
fucking awesome, love this sort of documentaries. this guy has made a commendable life work.
great video!
THIS IS THE KIND OF VIDEO WE WANT VICE
More from this guy please!!!!!
Stunning! I love black and white photography for that same reason
I saw The Lady (Aung San Sukyi) on your photos board. Thanks Mr.Patrick Brown.
Steven, thank you for sharing, this is exactly what I'm talking about it's not just happening in China, it's happening all over the world. There has been a slight misunderstanding with my project, the reason why I have focused on Asia is because I live here, this project was self funded, if I had the funds I would have tried to documented other regions. Thanks for pointing this fact about pet tigers, I'm going to repost your link.
The picture of the Elephant chained up makes me want to cry.
wish it was longer!
I've enjoyed this video, simply because I'm interested in photography and documentary :)
This was actually a good video, I would to love to meet him
Watching this 8 years later, I hope the photographer is doing well.
good job vice, quality subject matter
As always vice, top job.
Best documentary by far.
Dope that he shoots with film.
Man I'd love to have a conversation with this guy. Seems really knowledgeable.
This was an enjoyable documentary!
Great photographer GREAT STORY.
I'm pretty sure it's these types of videos is what makes people subscribe to VICE, not the other types of videos. Documentaries about the lesser known stuff in the world (at least to a North American citizen) is why I watch VICE.
yay some actually interesting content!
Patrick Brown, a very interesting fella!......some people talk to a video camera and I see through the bulsh*t.....but this guys words ring so very true........absolutely commendable work and caring.
They already tons of great info, go back through their video log! :)
Loving all the film. There aren't many analog pros out there anymore.
wow, that picture of the elephant is so sad. It's eyes went deep into me, I feel like I'm gonna cry ;(
I like that this man is doing this. letting it out in the public is the only way to hopefully make a stop to this tragedy
Great vid
More Photography related things!
Please make an iTunes podcast! It'd be great to be able to watch these on the go.
good stuff vice!
If I could I would thumbs up you over a 1000 times! Finally someone that knows the Koch brothers...
Vice! U guys r really nice and patrick brown is really doing a g8 job!!! keping rocking patrick u r the guy..
Thank you, that needed to be said.
Im no animal lover or anything like that, nor am i an activist, but when i watch VICE's videos like this i want to do something about the issue at hand. Powerful stuff
What photography does he use to get pictures like the ones at 3:03 ? i really like the style and want to try it. Is it polaroid?
Does anyone know how can i get his final work . Trading To Extinction.
