The lore of the Assassin's Creed games are that the player is "experiencing" the world via their ancestor's point of view through mitochondria memory accessed by a fictional device call the Animus. I like to think the "Disney" view of the worlds, the inaccuracies and compressed timelines are caused by memory bleed from all the other data stored in our mitochondria through the millennia. It helps with immersion and fills the gaps and supports the presence of some of the fantastical creatures in some of the games etc. Just my humble opinion. I'd be elated if I were a historian to see the ancient world as it might have been, in such detail and care.

    • @gorazdvahen492

For me, however, the whole "blood memory" aspect only kills the immersion, but at least Origins and Odyssey gave up on constantly reminding you that you are not playing a game, but playing a character playing a game... All I want is a holodeck, I need no ancient mystery nonsense.

This is such a cool video! I really appreciate y'all putting this together. I was a history major in college (found out about classical studies too late to get a degree in it) and the amount of detail they put into Odyssey's game environment is honestly my favorite part of this whole game. ❤️

I would be curious to see experts experience the Discovery Mode titles for Origins and Odyssey - both of these were created for the purposes of teaching actual history through gameplay, unlike the main games, which - as you have correctly noticed - get inspired a lot from actual research, but take liberties here and there.

For me Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a piece of art. Absolutely gorgeous landscape. The amount of effort the developers do to put in the details, you can never appreciate them enough. I haven't had the chance to play AC Valhalla, I'm sure it must be equally gorgeous if not better. While playing Odyssey I wonder what happened to all these huge statues and buildings and weapons. Why have most of them disappeared without a trace!?

I was a classics major and Odyssey blew me away from that perspective. Also, the water is gorgeous as is the other scenery. I loved that they have a discovery feature outside the game. I appreciate this video because after playing the game for 180 hours , I had gotten so bored with the repetitive tasks, every tomb/fort being similar, that I forgot just how amazing everything else was. Hopefully she got to see more of it, maybe on her own, as ther is so much to see, including Knossos, etc.

Yes I agree with your comment that it would be preferable to have her comment as you walk through so that you can pause on what she is discussing. It would be easier to learn from and allow her or other experts to really expand on the topics. Wonderful tool for teaching my students. Please consider doing more. Many thanks.

This was the first of the series I played and I got it because I've studied so much about ancient Greece. It really helped visualize what that world could have looked like. It also sort of hit home how Classical Greece was built on the ruins of another mega-building civilization, the Mycenaeans, as you could see ruins everywhere you went in the game.

I love the excitement she’s exhibiting seeing all of this reconstruction of the places she knows so well. It’s part of the reason I love the Assassin’s Creed franchises, I get to visit historic places and see it animated as it might have really happened. He joy pulls us in. To have a someone that knows the period and places says it’s really accurate and cool. Someone did some major research for all theses games to get it and we the fans appreciate it. Thanks for the video.

What a wonderful video. Thank you both for your analysis. Even after I was well done with the game I continue to go back and visit beautiful and cool places to see how people went about their daily life and just to see what's going on. Ubisoft does an incredible job with historical detail. If interested Assassin's Creed Origins is also amazing and in that one you visit ancient Egypt. You can hang out with Cleopatra and even climb up the Great Pyramid and also on top of the Sphinx. To me it doesn't get much cooler than that. Take care.
