@Niels Kloppenburg while I don't subscribe to the theory of flat-earthers, I do understand the premises they set forth. Their model of earth has the south pole as the imaginary border of a disk, and the north pole as the center. So melting a pole on their planet has different affects depending on the pole.

This is not only an excellent description of Einstein’s 1914 paper on General Relativity, but it’s the only video description that I’ve ever seen directed at a lay-audience that didn’t suck. Most resort to analogies with balls on trampolines, or whirlpools, and completely mislead the audience.

So... Is anybody gonna whoosh them or not?
Aight after watching this video 58 times over the course of the last 4 years this is what I’ve learned about this video:
- Objects with mass curve the space and the existence of *time* allows objects with mass to move and because space is curved by the objects with mass they start to move through the curved space that keeps being curved by the objects with mass and eventually the objects with mass meet each other in a point in space curving the space in a way that the objects with mass keep being together at the same place in space.
- So the objects with mass are not “attracted” to each other, they’re just moving through the three dimensional universe thanks to time and they move because their mass causes the space to curve, if space is three dimensional the curvature is a three dimensional curvature, this three dimensional curvature causes the objects with mass to move through space AND time.
- If *time* did not exist, objects with mass would remain immobile in space, what we know as "gravity" would not exist in a universe without something like time.
Objects with mass move through space because their masses curve space and time causes that movement to occur, in other words, time, which only moves in one direction, causes objects with mass to move through space, which can only move in one direction, "forward" in time.
So, the answer to the question “which way is down?” turns out to be what we know as the direction objects with mass move in the dimension of time.
When you reproduce a video of a guy bungee jumping you’ll see him “falling DOWN”.
But what if you move “backwards” in time?
If you reproduce the same video in reverse you will see the dude “falling UP” moving in the opposite direction of the earth, not towards the earth like we do in this universe.
We humans are just objects with mass and the planet earth is another object with mass, we are not “attracted” to the earth, we are just moving forward in time through a curved space, curvature in space caused in a big part by this MASSIVE object that is our planet earth.
“Going down” is just “going forward” in time.

You're overthinking it with the time thing. E=mc^2 means energy and mass are one and the same, just different manifestations of the same thing. Mass and energy warps space-time, so say an asteroid at rest, but moving in a velocity (not accelerating) far from the Earth, will continue on its way without interacting much with the Earth. An asteroid going at the right speed and moving close to the Earth can be captured into orbit, like a moon. It's at rest, but falling as fast as the curvature of the Earth so it never strikes the Earth. An asteroid that is closer, will circle the Earth and slowly fall down and strike it. But all three objects are at rest, moving in a straight line. It's only the mass of the Earth curving space-time causing the last two asteroids to "fall" towards it.
Also, light no mass, but its path (space-time) is curved, so light will bend around massive objects. That's why even light can't escape the curvature of space-time created by black holes.

I really do miss these videos more than any other content that has stopped being produced by anyone. The shorts are good, but the way he would diverge topics was always something I loved.
I loooove your videos! I'm able to understand everything and can explore any topic the Vsauce way. Very creative and fun! Plus, it blows my minf how sometimes the videos are from ages ago . It's surreal how much effort must go into these masterpieces. The quality is just outstanding and you have a talent for keeping the listeners attention for this long, really! I've always had this question about ice skaters in the Olympics, regarding the ribbon test at about 18:00. How is it a fair race when the person on the outside of the rink has a longer distance to cover than the person on the inside?
idk much about the sport but do the athletes have the same starting line or no?
if the athlete on the inside starts earlier than the outer rings then it means they've accounted for the curvature by making the start lines specific to each ring
after like 4-5 rewatches I can finally grasp the full picture of it and deeply understand what it is said here. I watched it first time like 5 y ago and barely understood any facts from the end of this video. Only slowly but surely with a lot of patience but also knowledge u can watch this video last time and say "I got it"

i used this video to teach my boyfriend about relativity. he's thrilled, he's never gotten good science education and always loved physics but was never taught the basic conceptsso everything is a bit harder for him. used to video not only to show him what relativity was but also for him to learn the F = ma formula. this is a classic video

funny thing about the cone is that it also is flat for all points except at the tip where curvature is undefined. (we literally see him unroll it) rather, the coordinate lines that we use to describe spacetime on the cone are curved.

Here's the thing tho, I don't even really like Mindfield. The big build up is always for some kind of experiment, but the Vsause I fell in love with just had crazy ways of linking disparate ideas together. Throwing budget at a show to make cool experiments just isn't Vsause. It's mindfield. The few episodes I've watched were relatively boring.
