Netflix said people who watched the medical drama House would often not even finish the first season and of those who did, far fewer made it through the second and so on. It wasn't worth renewing the contract. They were paying Fox for a show that "nobody" was watching, despite being one of the more popular shows of all time.
      The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and other shows are leaving in the next few days (end of December 2020). All of those shows are edited for TV and commerical breaks. Watching them on netflix feels like the opening of this skit where he opens the door, then it fades to black then fades back in to him opening the door. The rest of the skit was just exaggeration for comedic effect.

      @Pony Boy it's because nobody watches cable anymore. To make the same amount of money with the shit ratings most TV channels get now, they have to run way more ads.
      Just get a Netflix or Prime Video subscription and watch on there, no reason to pay for cable anymore unless you're huge into football.

    • @tissuepaper9962
      @tissuepaper9962 3 년 전 +3

      @Pony Boy "Nobody" is clearly hyperbole. Y'know, "hyperbole"? They talked about it in English class. Maybe you weren't paying attention back then, but millennials definitely didn't invent it.
      The difference between then and now is that it's about 1000 times easier to start a new streaming service than it is to start a new cable company. There's fierce competition between diverse competitors in the world of streaming services, whereas cable is fraught with monopolies. The extreme ease of digital piracy gives these companies a strong incentive to make their platforms as consumer-friendly and painless to use as possible, because people will just watch on some other site if they don't like how a certain streaming service is operating. Even a 10-year-old could tell you how and where to find whatever you want to watch online, legally or otherwise. Tools like TOR and BitTorrent make it virtually impossible for an ISP or national government to stop this behavior.

      There's a few stock sound effects that are used ad nauseum. There's one I personally call the Fade Screech. It's a sound effect that was used in Dragon Age Origins, during the Fade mission, and because navigating that level is a bitch, I heard that screeching sound SO MUCH. I have since learned after watching too much Kitchen Nightmares, that it is used all the time in reality TV also.

    The way it's massively drawn out to fit the timeslot (which is only like 20 minutes without them) is the best part. If you watch something like a game show then every few minutes will be "Ok we'll be back after this, and we're back!"
    With youtube channels it's interesting to see some creators actually make their own adverts for the sponsors. Some people will actually stay to see the advert more than the video itself.

    I remember Overanalyzing Avatar, in his identically named series, brought up a point I never noticed about the show; he called out how Sokka would very frequently give recaps when scenes change between commercials. Like, someone would say "hey, (X) is something that's happening," cue surprised reaction into commercial break, and the first scene after the commercial break opens with Sokka going "I can't believe (X) is happening."

      A lot of countries have very strict rules about how much time per hour is allowed to be advertising, and it's not like an average over the week or something, it's on a per hour basis. Moving ad breaks upsets the carefully balanced advertising:content ratio.
