Felt compelled to write something very personal to me after listening to Mr. Suhail Seth. This is going to be a bit long.
I am an Indian, I married a white British national years ago, everyone jokingly called me a national traitor. I was of the principle of considering everyone as humans and to not pin history on anyone. My family and friends supported me and accepted my British family as their own
I shifted my camp to the UK, even though I was technically an "NRI", I wasn't part of any NRI bubbles, my whole circle constituted of my husband, his family and his friends. There was love, of course, closeness, but I always felt I wasn't quite "family", nor were my people back in India. There was banter, of course, curry jokes, brown jokes, and I took it in my stride and laughed alongside feeling honoured that my British "family" had the freedom to joke about sensitive things to me.
But being subjected to it constantly for years, I did not understand just how much it was psychologically bringing me down. Making me insecure, making me more and more aware of my identity as an Indian, among people like my husband's uncle who asked "don't they all live in mud huts" when they talked about my husband marrying an Indian.
We had a son, who they already deemed to be the brown sheep of the family months before he was born, everyone eagerly waited to see the brown cousin and to determine just what shade of brown he will be. But to their surprise, my son inherited his father's skin complexion, and my dark eyes and hair, and they even waited to see whether he will change his colour.
I always questioned whether I was truly a part of the family, and my partner had always assured me that I was, and I was just being over sensitive. I had post partum depression, unsurprisingly, and went through personal hell. At the end of it, my husband walked out on me, saying it's not up to him to solve my issues, and that I need a therapist to "fix" me, and his entire family, who sent me birthday cards every year, started to pretend that I don't even exist. His actions finally proved that I wasn't being paranoid or over sensitive. I understood that, let alone considering me family, they never even had considered me human.
I managed to survive everyday with this enormous shock and hurt, so that my son wouldn't lose his mother. After all this, they look after my son very well, so I'm grateful to them for that, although I know given a chance they will want my son all for themselves. But being a mother, my greatest priority in my life right now is my son's happiness.
Now, why am I writing this here?
The last two years, my whole distraction was to get interested in the politics unfurling in India, and I, who was strongly anti-BJP, I, who thought BJP was all about beating the couples who come out holding hands on Valentine's day, started noticing our hon. PM Sri Narendra Modi ji. Let me state, I am a living example to prove that what Mr Suhail Seth is 100% right. The work that our dearest PM put in over these years, upholding the dignity of India and making it rise above the stereotypes, it was the best therapy I've had to help me rise above all the inflicted insecurities and trauma. I started feeling proud of being brown, being an Indian, I truly understood, how my culture, our culture deeply ingrained the concept of "Vasudaiva kudumbakam" in us from birth, and how human beings are molded through their culture. I understood, being an Indian, I was capable of love and resilience to a greater degree than I ever understood about myself, and I understood the value of our philosophy and visions, and the immense potential and ability that India, as a nation, has, to bring the whole world to peace and prosperity, all the while doing so with humility. With my own eyes, I saw the perils of individualism, the loneliness, the selfishness that it breeds among humans.
When our lunar module landed on the moon, I watched it live, and I clapped along with everyone, only to break down in tears, it was an emotional catharsis. It was regaining my dignity back, through the reclamation of the dignity of India.
I don't have any stereotypes to pin on the British, I know some great people here, and me, my indianness, would never permit me to treat anyone with preconceived biases. And I take pride in that.
I take pride in being an Indian. I feel blessed that I got to be born in that land this life time, and I feel honored and grateful that I could go through valuable experiences to understand the value of being an Indian.
And I don't have words enough to express my gratitude to our PM, one of the greatest leaders that the world has seen, Sri Modiji, aapko kodi kodi pranaam, I have mentally touched your feet many times, I wish you good health and years ahead to make India regain its lost glory so that it might help the world. The world needs it, now, more than ever.
