I am an older person living in an area with limited bus service and I often give people a ride. People here don't typically hitchhike. The odd one I don't pick up if they don't look 'local' and now I don't feel so bad, but I probably wouldn't pick up someone who is actually hitching as the local kids don't do that, if that makes sense.

I love how the detective told Nick he isn't going to read him his rights because he isn't going to ask him any more questions. Takes back the power nick thought he had when he refused to tell them where the gun was buried 🤣.

@@m998hmmwv7 Miranda is a funny thing. It was intended to protect people, but police often capitalize on people's misunderstanding of it to use it against them. Miranda has a lot of ins and outs and "special circumstances," but the gist of it is this: when in police custody (which Nick was not, as explained in the video), the court assumes that anything you say was coerced until your rights have been read to you. The Miranda warning turns that assumption around. After being read your rights, the court automatically assumes three things:
1.) That you understand your rights,
2.) That anything you say from that point onward is voluntary (and therefore, admissible in court), and
3.) (this is the kicker) That you are waiving the rights they've just told you about.
After this point, you can exercise your rights, but unless you explicitly invoke them, the court may also assume that your silence is incriminating.
This is why there is only ONE correct thing to say to any officer who wants to interview or question you, whether you're in custody or not:
*"I'm not answering any questions, and I'd like to speak with a lawyer."*
One other important thing to remember is that even if a confession is ruled inadmissible, it doesn't mean that other evidence can't be used in court to secure a conviction. All other evidence legally procured is still viable. Nick obviously didn't realize this, either.
Man I originally felt bad for Montana thinking she just got caught up in it, but damn the dude was talking about doing it again & that it'd be there turn next. Any sympathy I had for her flew out the window. I'd be scared to live with someone who could just murder an innocent kid in cold blood like that.

The fact that Hunter said, “Don’t kill me; I have a kid,” just shows you how his daughter was the center of his universe and he hated the thought of not being able to continue to protect and take care of his daughter. 💔 That crushed me. Rest in peace Hunter. 💗

Wow, she was so awful in that call. She basically asked him “so hey can you tell me all the details on that murder you committed that you already told me?” Like Jesus any person on earth would be able to tell that she’s got the cops listening
That was my first thought too but you'd think they'd go over what and how she'd ask or say before she called. So partially the blame is in the investigator too
That's interesting though - because he knows she WAS there, at the scene of the murder. So, he automatically knows something is up when she says she doesn't know what happened. I think she was trying to let him know the cops are listening.

Maybe things weren't fully divulged with them. She probably never said anything. Like at all. Nothing not even a comment on the food being good unless he asked. Listening to her she sounds like she's psychologically abused. This honestly was probably his next step in training her to help him murder people. But he fucked up cause he didn't realize who she was deep down.

Don't forget that the girl was also hiding something. at that point her story was that she wasn't even there with them when the kid got shot. so she couldn't just ask something like "what happened there?" because he knows that she was there when he committed murder. neither could she say something like "what exactly happened there? I don't remember/that was too traumatic for me to register" because then the cops would have found out that she with them in the desert. she was in a problematic position.
She says he left a vm then says, I told him I'd have to call him back. How do you talk to a vm. Yeah they really should have prepared her for the call cuz she doesn't seem like the sharpest crayon in the box.
Not only are you ending someone's life completely without reason, but I will never understand how anyone would ruin their own life by killing some random person and being sent to jail. Insane.

The fact that Nick didn’t get life in prison without parole is a terrifying thought. There is no doubt in my mind that he will unalive people again once he is released!
He'll likely never get released not matter how well he behaves on that 30 year stretch as long as someone on that parole board has a beating heart and a working brain. They always review the deeds before considering release.
It’s a small community. They’ll show up at every parole hearing to make sure he stays in prison.

I’m in the military, most guys who talk about killing people on their deployments are full of it. The real ones who’ve had to go through that never talk about it. It’s not a badge of honor to take a life in combat. This guy was a murderer. Nothing more.

I hitchhiked from Los Angeles to Miami Beach in 1976, it took me 10 days. Met a lot of cool people and never had one problem with anyone who picked me up. It wasn't until years later when I was reading about some serial killers that I realized I was hitchhiking in some of the same areas they were operating in. Kind of freaked me out. Today, I wouldn't hitchhike anywhere or pick up a hitchhiker.
i hear hitchhiking was commonplace from the 50`s till late 70`s basically till serial killers,rapists,etc. kept ruining the whole thing for everyone and safety become a huge concern, nowadays hitchhiking is dead, i`m surprised that Hunter hitchhiked as recent as 2017.

I was always aware of the dangers on both sides of hitchhiking, but before I got my life together and before Uber was everywhere, I had no choice but to hitchhike. I'm genuinely shocked that nothing bad ever happened to me. Beyond grateful for that too

People still hitchhike. It is still more prevalent than most people would think, because we all know it’s so dangerous...but it happens.
It never ceases to amaze me how a jury gives the possibility of parole to a defendant whom is believed to be capable of commiting the same crime that led him to prison not one, but multiple times. Isn’t it clear that the guy is clearly a threat to society?
There was no jury, they never had a trial. The state was going for the death sentence, the DA gave Nick the option to plead guilty for the possibility of parole

In a nutshell you just summarized what sentencing should be about. It should be about protecting society with reform being a nice thing to try for if possible. Sentencing should be based on how much of a future threat that person poses to society. I remember a case where a kid's estranged father had seriously injured his mother on several occasions. His father then threatened to kill his mother on a particular day, the kid was ready for him in case he actually showed, which he did, and shot him to protect his mother. They gave him a life sentence without possibility of parole (the police had been called many times in the past but told them there was nothing they could do). This for a kid who likely would never be a threat to anyone for the rest of his life. Meanwhile they give much lighter sentences to people who have killed someone with little provocation but since it wasn't premeditated they were let off easy. Yet if you can kill without much provocation you will always be a threat.
Kudos to police in this case, finding the killer based on a throwaway FB comment that could have easily been dismissed or overlooked. Solid police work.
Detectives must have tireless focus and must be detail oriented and not miss even the smallest details that could possibly be clues or Tells. They use these clues, details to solve the puzzle of who is/are the killers. Helps also to have a 6th or Wolf sense.
The killer is also a moron for leaving the body near his house. A truly moronic serial killer.

This reminds me of my brother. For years would lie about being in the secret service, going on missions, and killing people. This ended with him attempting to murder a woman and he went to prison for around 6 years. Definitely not enough. He is the definition of a sociopath and I fear for everyone around him. He’s moved away and I’ve cut him off completely from what he put my sister and I through when we were younger. I believe he will hurt someone again. He told me directly he stabbed this woman because he was “curious what it felt like.” No normal person does that. It’s just so fucked up. Anyone that can disconnect themselves from other people and not care have the ability to be serial killers imo.

I hitched for years up until this one time 2 guys picked me up. I got the worst feeling of my life from the second guy who sat directly behind me, I imagined suddenly how easy it would be for him to throttle me. I'd never in my life felt such a cold certainty so I listened to my instincts and jumped out at the first stop sign. That was the last time hitch hiking. It felt dangerous in a way that I'd never experienced.

It is absolutly unacceptable that the actual murderer only served 30 years while the others served 15 and 26. That is absolutly insane and appalling. He should be doing 80. Especially since in his own words he will kill again.
His parole term should have been longer, certainly. But, its only eligible after 30. His comments in the interview and outside of it depict someone who will kill again, and that would make for a very hard parole case. I imagine it will be denied many times, until he has at least served 50.

@@Space_Ghost_Hunter I actually know a few people who were in the special forces branches and I also have a friend whose father in law was on the SWAT team for most of his police career. The one thing they all have in common is that they don't say anything about their time in those roles. If you even ask them about it they just politely say they aren't allowed to discuss it. Anyone out there loud mouthing/bragging about is clearly full of crap. Most of those people who actually served those roles are professional about it and in most cases don't want to remember or think about if they did have to do anything like take a life in combat. Plus a lot of their activities are still classified and they can get in a world of shit if they do talk and it gets around.
I was in army intelligence, i guarded nukes and i literally had a license to kill. I also had my own nuclear football just in case i needed to indiscriminately launch a nuke for some reason.
Even though my MOS said i was a truck driver, I heroically prevented WW3 when the truck i was driving caught fire.

The most honest statement made by Nick was when he told Montana that she knew everything he did. Montana lies her ass off over and over, whereas Keith was honest from the first talk. Keith had real remorse over what happened, and it truly seems as if he was the only one.... including the girl who was so angry she couldn't go with that she was crying.... being pregnant saved her from being in attendance. Too bad Idaho does not have laws against knowing a murder is going to happen, yet does nothing to stop it. Had she of called 911 and told them what Nick was going to do Hunter would still be here.

We're not talking about a criminal or something. The guys 'crime' is that he hitchhiked... While going to a new area for a new job so he could help support his child. I think people just like to reach to throw the "bad person" stamp on murder victims when learning about cases like this because it helps lessen the impact of this horrific crime and it means they don't have to feel as bad.

Nick wouldn't do his first kill before witnesses, unless he knew they were on his side (i.e. prepared for what would happen). They were in on it, they knew what would happen, it's just hard to prove. The only reason they're talking at all is to not be charged with murder.

Moral of the story, don't get into the car with a stranger. I usually walk everywhere, and I've had strangers offer me rides, and I just say no. Twice I've had 2 of them confront me about not getting inside their car at my workplace. Which only made it worse.

I got chills when they interviewed Nick. That look on his face when he said he saw the post of Facebook when the detectives mentioned they’d found a body, and his tone of voice sounded excited. Even without context of what he was in for, you can just tell there is something sinister and dark about him. Hunter must’ve been terrified.
There's nothing scary about him. He's a bottom-of-the-barrel loser and he knows that. His acts of violence (both real and imagined) are a scream for respect and attention, things that he's been desperately craving for, probably his whole life. And he will die in jail. in complete anonimity, without ever achieving either.

The problem of death penalty is scenarios where the innocent are executed, either due to judicial failure or corruption. Once that is done, you cannot ever right that wrong.
You can argue that it should only be done in the rarest cases where they have all the evidence guaranteed, but it inevitably will be misused or abused.

I actually knew nick and spent a lot of time with him back in 2013. Years before this happened. Still blows my mind..I knew he was a narcissistic and didn't care much for others. He slept around a lot and actually had at the time atleast 1 kid possibly 2 kids he didn't have anything to do with. Shotting guns was a common activity of his. I never expected this though.

i went to school with some real psychopaths who were that way when they were 10-12 years old. Killing and torturing small animals, stealing, and throwing rocks at other kids,. Two of them ended up killing people. One guy killed his girlfriend with a hammer when he was 19, and the other was in a fender bender when he was 20, and pulled a base ball bat from this truck, and beat the guy in the other car to death. About 2 years before the second psycho killed the other driver, he was with a few of his friends one night during Christmas break, and started harassing me and a couple of my high school friends while we were bowling. He didn't remember me from school probably because he was two grades behind me. He had to stay back in school for 2 years, but I knew who he was, and asked him: "Hey aren't you so and so." Then he asked one of his buddies: "Is the shotgun still in the trunk?"
They left and nothing happened that night, but when I found out what he had done two years later, I considered myself and my friends to be lucky.

The local news who covered this originally when it happened had dug into it and his crew he was in in the military never saw any combat according to his military officer that they reached out to. It’s mind boggling how many people try using that as an excuse for things they do when they never even saw combat like they claim 🤯🥴
I know someone who was in the military and he would constantly call me and tell me that the only way that he would be free from his flashbacks and tics is if we were together. We'd never had any romantic interest towards each other before, at least not from my end, but he said that I was the only comfort he had. I was married at the time and I have two children... there's absolutely no way I could have someone unstable around me. I helped him get help and get him into the VA and on medication so he could be relieved of his anxiety and flashbacks, at least to an extent. There are people who seen REAL combat and react accordingly after having been discharged or served their time in the military, and back to being a civilian. This guy was so full of it that he couldn't see reality past the hazy film of bullshit that was over his eyes. Narcissist on every level. It's a good thing they got him. It would have been in Keith and Montanna's best interest to go together right after he'd killed this poor boy, and turned Nick in. No one will ever truly know the full depth of what happened out there, but the good news is that there's justice being served.

Back in the late 60's & 70's, my grandmother would pickup hitchhikers all the time. Especially if they were kids. Always scared the crap out of us. My grandmother had a Master's in teaching & thought maybe she could provide a positive influence on the kids to get them back in school. Sometimes she'd take them to the nearest diner for a hit meal. She had a big soft heart but boy, so glad she's unable to do that in today's day & age.

I hitchhiked around the East Coast from my teen years until I joined the Army at 23 in the 1980s. Mostly Lancaster, PA to Philly to New Jersey, Maryland and New York.
Only had one incredibly scary ride, a depressed, divorced, recently unemployed stockbroker who had 2 BMWs, and a nice house but was using crank and cocaine continuously, who was paranoid about everything, picked me up then said he had to change cars.
This made me concerned.
We got to his place and he began spray painting his one black BMW with gold and silver spray paint.
I was and am convinced that he was close to some kind of edge, feeling like he had lost everything and was also in some kind of manic phase.
Doing crank and coke for days without sleeping hadn't helped.
When he'd finished his painting by putting a giant arrow on the hood he dropped me off at the interstate restaurant so I could keep hitch hiking.
I wouldn't have been the least surprised if he'd killed me.

She's worse than all of them, not because any of the others aren't horrible enough, but because she went along with everything, had the opportunity to tell the officers all of that at the beginning, and choose to still defend Nick at the beginning of the interrogation, claiming she didn't want him to go to jail.
She had already talked to Nick about it all (although she was instructed not to) prior to the call. The detectives aren't stupid. They know if they put her on a call with him that it would lead to something. And it did. They were both implicated.
That guy should never, ever be let out.
One of the first things I learned in Kindergarten was to never get in a car with strangers. It stayed with me my whole life. I never did hitchhike.
The cops already know the girl is a terrible liar, she already went and talk to the guy immediately after being told not to and deleted all the messages, she was obviously at the scene of the crime. They should have used the bad cop tactic and scared her, she'd fold like a towel. Rehearse what she will say on the phone. The killer knew she was at the scene, her line of questioning, if run through a universal translator would have said "Hey the cops are listening and they forced me to make this call"
At my alcohol recovery I met a guy, and we became sort of friends. Later at a meeting he confessed that he was an x con having served 7 years in Folsom Prison. Later he confessed to me he was arrested for rape. He also confessed that he was a home invader, and a general thug. One day in his truck he got into a road rage with a trucker. I was shocked by his instant anger. I wonder how many people he hurt in his home invasions. He thinks he is a ladies' man and insists that the pretty girls hug him even with his wife sitting there watching. He got jealous over a girl I had befriended and broke off ever talking to me again. He's married??? He told me all the things he wanted to do to this girl while I was stuck in his truck. He still has a criminal mind and feels persecuted because the church members didn't want him around their daughters and kicked him out. Oh my!
The fact that ANY of these "people" are going to be eligible for parole at all is sickening. Nick is 100% going to kill again if he gets out of prison. For f*cks sake, did the judge and jury not hear Montanna's interview where she gave multiple examples of how he wanted to kill people?! To kill someone who would stop to help you... evil isn't a strong enough word for that.

Our judicial system doesn't provide justice for victims anymore. The fact that parole was even on the table is just another disgusting example of this unfortunately.
