Kira Payer chases down a Kate Courtney QOM

- Kira has been tearing up the Strava leaderboards in Malibu over the last two years when she is in California for winter training. Latigo is the climb in this video and porbably the most well known climb in the area. We filmed this in March last year.
I was in two minds when deciding to film this one, do I follow on the bicycle or bring out the moto. I knew my time up here was faster than Kate's QOM time, but I also knew how hard it was for me to get that time, I died a thousand deaths. I am very lucky I decided to bring out the moto because Kira blew past Kate's time by two minutes and past mine by a minute!
Her effort is rather deceptive because she is always in control and doesn't seem to be struggling that much, but I can assure you this is an incredibly hard push. It was really cool to watch the footage back and hear Kira tell the guys how she wanted things paced. Always in control and just under her limit. To put things in perspective there have been 94,885 attempts by 14,041 people on this climb, Kira is 30th overall.
Unfortunately my gimbal battery died close to the final summit, well short of what it should be able to stay alive for, but luckily I added a camera under Drakes saddle so we were able to watch the whole show.

If you want rules and fairness, enter a real race. This a legit Strava KOM. Because there aren’t rules about drafting.
Kate Courtney probably doesn’t give a hoot about this QOM, considering she wears rainbow bands.
Incredible effort from Kira! I don't have a problem with the lead out or drafting, I know it happens in general but I think in this instance it isn't fair since she is drafting two men. Kira is going for a QOM, it isn't a soft time, so it is unlikely she could find two women fit enough to draft behind the whole way since she is going so hard. If she was drafting behind two women, maybe they pull off the train half way and she needs to complete the rest solo. In this instance, she might as well be moto-paced which is against the Strava rules.
Watching them climb this never ending climb at that speed got me winded…😂

@@caspar_gomez After riding rim break for years and years on different bikes since i was 12, id never been on a disc brake bike...bought a disc brake specialized with nice size tires and good contact patch at 24 now...the feeling of barely pressing down and getting amazing linear brake force is addicting to me....especially in the wet.... i hopped back on my rim brake and it felt...scary.. like the other guy said lol

I don’t see an issue, she still had to pull those watts to do it, are some of you saying that every kom/Qom is done solo? The ones I’d be worried about is the kom/Qom that have been won on electric bikes

@@ccuellar6212 sure to a degree and there are plenty of cheaters out there but the in all the results reflect the riders' ability. meaning the faster riders will usually have the faster times. if you look at a guy with the most koms in the world, tadej could take all of them from him, maybe on some he will need help but if he tried to he could have the most koms by far because he's the best most well rounded rider. most ppl in the world dont have a top 100 kom leader in their area but even with clowns who collect koms like that, there are still so many out there that arent really competitive. koms mean less when comparing to others but you can compare your times which is what means the most.
This isn’t a race and more importantly, the previous QOM holder didn’t draft her way to the top.
The problem is the title really, it should be "2 guys and Kira Payer chase down a Kate Courtney QOM". But I guess that didn't sound so well to Safa either for some reason.

Most competitive QOMs on flat or medium flat terrain are DEFINITELY drafted and that's perfectly fine.

I'd be doing 8mph where you are doing 15 mph but, I'd still call you out for drafting the whole way even though I wouldn't be fit enough to do it

It's kind of hard for the pacemakers to dial it down. That's a very concious decision. Maybe they could have a second head unit that's connected to her sensors just to avoid overreaching.

I can assure you almost all records on Strava are drafted or paced, specially famous climbs, cycling is also a group sport man

It's not cheating...it's just not the same as doing it solo with no drafting is it? It's a different category.
She got the (drafted) DKOM, not the KOM and the two guys who rode in front should be listed on the DKOM on Strava.
anyway, I hope she attempts this ride again....by herself without wind blockers and pacers.

KOMs and QOMs shouldn't count in group rides. Especially when you got male riders pulling you and giving you a draft. Should only be solo efforts or races.

@@johnsteinberg3618 that's exactly the point. There are many factors next to drafting. What if air pressure was 10% lower? Tailwind you mentioned already. These angry riders in comments just pointing out at the draft without being able to draw a single conclusion what exactly counts as a KOM/QOM. Nothing is ever so pure and so fair.

First off phenomenal job, I will never in my life be able to climb a hill like that. My question is the person you took the QOM from, was she pulled along as well? If not this isn't a apples to apples and the other lady is still the solo QOM I think.
apparently what matters to some here, is the record on Strava. Not the tricks to achieve it. I guess the lesson is to not worry about other Strava KOM's but rather, are you improving on the segment.

Being pulled up by two men as you draft them the entire way seems to diminish the effort and negate the qualification for QOM. Previously a couple of folks have said the draft effect is minimal at lower speeds. Nonsense, let her do a solo effort and then. This is a "trio" of the mountain, not queen. As we all know, the QOM's and KOM's have all been diluted over the years because apparently, anything goes. Even riding a vehicles bumper is legal.

As long as she's not on an e-bike who cares. Plenty of KOM/QOMs were done in a pack or with a 20 mph tailwind.

i ride local to a top 100 kom leader in the world, basically any kom you click on he has. he pulls around a top female kom world leader. some of his times seem sus, like speeds that are pro level sprint ending races but no signs of other riders on the leader board. so like solo efforts 40mph for over 2 miles on flat. i guess its possible solo if the tail wind is crazy, and also in the middle of a 60mile ride with a high avg. speed. i also caught some of their segments done in a car as if they forgot to end their ride, but couldnt manage to see where they wouldve stopped to get on and off the bike and in a car. but so what, who cares, it doesnt make him or her any better or worse. i think ppl who complain wish they were more talented on the bike and have to find fault else where to help soothe their hurt egos. king of the mountain may as well be called king of the poo. bottom line is a good effort is a good effort, and power numbers usually dont lie.

It's wild that the norm now is just to get paced all the way to a QOM... Not the first pro female I've seen do it, but in my eyes its no different than if a male was to sit behind a car for a KOM, thus using a person/thing faster than themselves to minimize their air resistance...

Taking the advantage of a tail wind, getting a lead out to the start of the segment, that's all commonly accepted among the unwritten KOM rules but getting a wind shield all the way through the segment, I find is taking it a step too far. I'd never consider this is a legit KOM, let alone making a video of it. Hopefully Strava will find a way to auto red flag this type of cheating in the near future otherwise KOM hunting will lose a lot of its value and interest.

What’s the functional difference between a tailwind and a draft? A tailwind is likely a bigger advantage. Especially on a 5-7% grade.

I have multiple koms on strava, none of which I’ve actively tried to claim. I’ve also had people take those koms from me it’s really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but hey if that’s what keeps you on the bike 🤷🏻♂️

It was wonderful to watch, but who are those two very nice fellows who were in the front the whole time? (Drake is mentioned at the end with his Strava, but a thank you to both, would have been more appropriate). Video should be re-titled "Kira Payer rides Latigo with .... and ....". The fact that she does not even acknowledge them before or even after the climb is kind of disappointing, especially for a pro riding in her sponsor jersey.
