    I know this isn't a recent video but I've heard some people putting a bell on the mom for the calf (or lamb etc) to follow the bell that they learn to associate with mom. In case someone needs to try that in the future.

    That's a good mom, not to leave her baby.

    Are you going to raise the blind calf or sell it. I think it should do well as it grows as long as he can smell the other cows. Nice video Issac.

    I had a blind lamb I took from a litter of three to foster on to another ewe with one lamb. It was only after he was let out to pasture that I realised he was unable to keep up and discovered he was blind. I kept him in the shed where he made himself known as soon as anyone entered the shed to demand feed. He ended up being the fattest lamb I ever produced. Had to be home killed and seriously fat trimmed. His eyes ended up all scera with tiny iris and pupil. His siblings were normal, so your calf could be a developmental anomaly.

    I work at a feedlot, blind cattle will adapt fairly quickly to their surroundings, we’ve dealt with quite a few and they do fine.

    I have a blind calf that was born with no eyes. Looks just like him. She is only a month old. Where are you guys located? I would love to rescue him!

    My grandfather had blind calf once. You have to get another one bonded to it like a guide. He did that til they were both full grown and when it came time he loaded the one with no vision problems on the trailer and the other one followed along. It was a story that sounded funny and sad to me when I was a kid.

    Would that cow and calf be best suited to be isolated from the herd for the calf’s nursing benefit? It must be scared moving around sightless in an unfamiliar world. It couldn’t ask for two better caretakers: the mother and you.

      The calf hasn’t known any different, having been born blind…so it’s probably not bothered very much. Much like people born with disabilities, you don’t exactly realize that you are disabled as kid, to you it’s your normal….🤷🏼‍♂️ The problem is people like you who don’t get it, disabled folks don’t want your pity, it’s absolutely not useful- and yeah you people have internalized those attitudes towards people (or animal) with disabilities as less than, to be pitied, as if our lives suck. They don’t. Just because we lack something you got, doesn’t make our lives suck, or scary, we adapt and do things slightly differently, and we’re just fine 🤦🏼‍♂️ What you’re truly saying is that YOU wouldn’t be able to cope in such a situation, and YOU think it’s scary flat out projection on your part, SMFH.

      @The Sun Witch Ah, another armchair “expert” 🙄 I grew up with Bison 🦬 on the east coast…they’re incredibly social animals, even if, like Eleanor, they’re at the bottom of the pecking order. So no, you’re wrong. And imposing your BS ignorant views of people with disabilities (in addition to anthropomorphizing those feelings onto animals). 🤦🏼‍♂️

    Should just feed him out for a freezer steer instead of taking a hit at the sale barn. Getting most money for your time.

    Sorry to hear about the blind calf.
    I forget where in the country you are, but what are your thoughts about Brahman influenced cattle? Is there a reason you wouldn’t have them in your herd? Here in Alabama, they raise a good calf on scrub pasture (which you don’t have- your pastures look GOOD) I guess what I mean is low input cattle… I know they put more bone on a carcass than weight in beef, but they’re good for this part of the country at least. I know you like your stocky angus.

    • @quailjailss

      @@ketchhomesteadoutdoors4048 yeah the color black sells better here. However some operations can benefit from Brahman influenced cattle. I just miss the days when the charolais sired calves brought the most at the sale barn.

    • @ketchhomesteadoutdoors4048
      @ketchhomesteadoutdoors4048 2 년 전

      @@quailjailss I have a buddy that is a registered Charolais farmer. He does mostly AI Charolais but does also have some red and black angus. If he sells his Charolais at registered sales he can get good money but if he sells at local sale barn they won’t bring the same as black angus. I think the Angus association has done a great job promoting angus beef through different fast food restaurants and grocery stores although Charolais beef is better for you because of it being leaner meat

  • @huwzebediahthomas9193

    Optic nerve problem, due to bone compression of optic canal to the brain? Must be something like that rather vitamin A problem from birth. Calf would have got enough vitamin A from mother during gestation to last for months.
