    Lyrics:
I walked through the door with you
    The air was cold
But somethin bout it felt like home somehow
And I left my scarf there at your sisterโ€™s house
And youโ€™ve still got it in your drawer even now
Oh your sweet disposition, and my wide eyed gaze
Weโ€™re singing in the car getting lost upstate
Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place
And I can picture it after all these days
And I know itโ€™s long gone and that magicโ€™s not here no more
And I might be ok but Iโ€™m not fine at allโ€ฆ
Cause there we are again on that
    Little town street
    You almost ran the red
Cause you were looking over at me
Wind in my hair, I was there
I remember it all too well
    Photo album on the counter
    Your cheeks were turning red
You used to be a little kid with glasses
    in a twin-sized bed
And your motherโ€™s telling stories bout you on
    the tee ball team
You taught me bout your past
    Thinkin your future was me
And you were tossing me the car keys
โ€˜F*** the patriarchyโ€™ keychain on the ground
    We were always skipping town
And I was thinking on the drive down
Any time now, heโ€™s gonna say itโ€™s love
You never called it what it was
til we were dead and gone and buried
Check the pulse and come back
Swearing itโ€™s the same, after 3 months in the grave
And then you wondered where it went to
As I reached for you but
    All I felt was shame
And you held my lifeless frame
And I know itโ€™s long gone and
There was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough
To forget why I needed toโ€ฆ
Cause there we are again in the middle of the night
Weโ€™re dancin round the kitchen in the
    refrigerator light
Down the stairs, I was there
I remember it all too wellโ€ฆ
    And there we are again
    When nobody had to know
You kept me like a secret
But I kept you like an oath
    Sacred prayer and weโ€™d swear
to remember it all too well
Well maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece
Til you tore it all up
    Running scared, I was there
I remember it all too well
And you call me up again
Just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
Iโ€™m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here
Cause I remember it all, all, all
They say allโ€™s well that ends well
But Iโ€™m in a new hell every time
    You double-cross my mind
You said if we had been closer in age
Maybe it would have been fine
And that made me want to die.
The idea you had of me
    Who was she?
    A never-needy, ever lovely jewel
    Whose shine reflects on you
Not weeping in a party bathroom
Some actress asking me what happened
    You.
    Thatโ€™s what happened: You.
You, who charmed my dad with self-effacing jokes
Sipping coffee like you were on a late night show
But then he watched me watch the front door
all night, willing you to come
And he said, โ€œitโ€™s supposed to be funโ€ฆ
    Turning 21โ€
    Time wonโ€™t fly
Itโ€™s like Iโ€™m paralyzed by it
Iโ€™d like to be my old self again
But Iโ€™m still trying to find it
    After plaid shirt days
And nights when you made me your own
Now you mail back my things
    And I walk home alone
But you keep my old scarf
    From that very first week
Cause it reminds you of innocence, and it smells like me
You canโ€™t get rid of it
Cause you remember it all too well
Cause there we are again when
    I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing
    Youโ€™ve ever known
It was rare, I was there
I remember it all too well
Wind in my hair, you were there
    You remember it all
Down the stairs, you were there
    You remember it all
It was rare, I was there
I remember it all too well
And I was never good at telling jokes
    But the punchline goes:
โ€œIโ€™ll get older, but your lovers stay my ageโ€
From when your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones
Iโ€™m a soldier whoโ€™s returning half her weight
And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?
Just between us, did the love affair maim you too?
Cause in this cityโ€™s barren cold
I still remember the first fall of snow
And how it glistened as it fell
I remember it all too well
Just between us did the love affair maim you
    All too well
Just between us, do you remember it
    All too well
Just between us, I remember it all too well
    Wind in my hair
I was there, I was there
Down the stairs, I was there
    I was there
    Sacred prayer
I was there, I was there
It was rare, you remember it
    All too well

She is operating on a much higher level than your average pop star, that is for sure. But she is no Dylan. And she shouldn't be. She has a different audience, a different approach, and lives in different times. If Dylan were a 25 year old singer-songwriter now, he would never become popular. He would be too complicated, to elitist and too smart for our age. It is sad, but true - people don't want Nobel Prize worthy lyrics in a song anymore. They want something simple, quick, slick - something that could be listened to while taking a bath or crunching fruits in a blender. Something that will get a lot of retweets and likes on X and KRplus. Cudos to Taylor Swift for rising above that insufferable mundanity. Reaching Dylan's heights would be too much for this age - she needs to stay exactly where she is.

Super nice double meanings. The 'city's barren cold' have could meant the relationship, and how coldly he ended it, and the 'first fall of snow' (white signifying innocence) meaning how she lost her virginity to him. Or she is the (innocent) snow that fell, and how she glistened as she fell from his love and affection. The glistening snow concept mirrors the other lyric about how she was just 'an ever-lovely jewel, whose shine reflects on you' to him.

When the original Red album came out over a decade ago, I was going through a painful breakup, and it really spoke to me and got me through. That ex and I eventually got back together, and got married. After 7 and a half years of marriage, and his countless affairs and betrayals, we just got divorced in September. I knew I would never be healed of this pain; but I thought I was doing fine and holding it together. But within minutes of listening to this song, it pulled out the darkest of grief and heartbreak from deep within me, in such an unexpected way. I dropped to my knees and sobbed with my whole body and soul. It just flowed out of me like the waters finally breaking over a dam. This song has allowed me to truly and fully mourn and grieve my loss. I keep listening to it, and I keep letting that grief out, and releasing that pain from my soul. Taylor helped me through that breakup all those years ago, and sheโ€™s helping me through the ultimate breakup now. Sheโ€™s helping us all to process, grieve, and heal. Itโ€™s therapy. But, most of all, this song is a monumental gift to humanity. And she is a treasure beyond words. Thank you, Taylor. Thank you. Thank you.

I am just discovering TS and I am truly blown away. 68 years old and listening to her makes me feel the emotions of a much younger man. I grew up in the generation of Don McClean "American Pie". A really long song and famous for its notoriety and how it dominated the airwaves for one particular summer of days gone by.
And her is this amazing 1o minute composition filled with emotions, longing, young love (of someone much older) disbelief, confusion, shattered, broken and it is longer than American Pie. Rolling Stones made mention of this and how Taylor Swift is a very serious and accomplished artist, who owns the rights to her own music. Bravo Taylor Swift. Not embarrassed to say I have listened to it many times, since I saw the recent Rolling Story about All Too Well!

โ€œYou kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath.โ€ That line cut DEEP. Iโ€™ve always loved this song, but as I grew up it lost meaning in my heart. But after the year Iโ€™ve had, this version is spot on to how it feels to invest so much time and effort into someone who never intended on truly giving you their love. Itโ€™s no longer a song about a young girl reminiscing and regretting how things ended in a relationship. Itโ€™s about a woman being completely heartbroken and picking herself back up again, saying โ€œthis was never my fault. I loved you. I didnโ€™t lose a thing. @@jamesfleming1155 the unfortunate truth is that honesty can be causal cruelty. I think it comes down to your approach. Empathy is the key, but if you no longer love someone and you think you're better off apart is it worth pretending to be broken hearted about it? People usually grieve the relationship in the process of deciding to end it. So by the time they ARE ending it, they've already accepted it.

The line "I forget about you long enough, to forget why I needed to" will still be the saddest and most ironic line for me.
You may try forget someone you've loved, but the truth is you don't really forget him/her. You are just forgetting the idea and feelings you have to that someone. Thus, you'll remember it all. But because of how time and life transcends, those feelings will change and you'll realize that things just pass. But you don't have to let your pain eat you all up though. Because that pain can be the power that will enable you to create something wonderful just like this song.
One thing's for certain. Taylor Swift, our QUEEN articulately portrays her emotions and thoughts in this song and in the end, it's the most precious thing to have witnessed.

You donโ€™t have to be embarrassed about liking her, just embrace it, you can like what you want to like. Is it because your friends donโ€™t like her? If not I completely respect your opinion. Just wondering.

Taylor is a creative genius. The biggest thing that separates her from most artists is she LOVES and LIVES for what she does. What an inspiration.
