    Video Updates:
    1) The conclusion of this video is 100% accurate and was re-shot to factor in Lenovo's updated sales pricing
    2) The reason we did not test the Zen 4 model is because we focus on reviewing Best Buy configurations as that is our primary market. However, we need to improve. In future, if there is a noticeably better config, we will buy it ourselves to include in the review.
    3) During the making of this video Lenovo dropped their pricing on the Zen 4 model by close to $400. As mentioned we reshot the conclusion to factor that in. All manufacturers can drop their pricing significantly and it would make their products more competitive. We need to compare this product to other products that are in the full price range, which in this case is $1k to $1.5K USD. In that price range, for many viewers there are better products.
    4) Lenovo offers a 4000 series graphics version of this laptop internationally. Yes, that would make this laptop significantly more competitive.
    5) The Macbook Pro 14 was included as a comparison in this video in the speakers section. That may seem like a more expensive laptop. However, you can buy the older Macbook Pro 14 M1 significantly discounted to a similar price point as this laptop, and it has the same speakers.
We are reading your comments, we are listening, and we love improving.

I think that the review you have done is great and not too much justification is needed.

On the one hand, although shocking, I see the context of the review and I believe the essence of this machine has been tied together nicely towards the end of the video. Great professional integrity and due diligence as always. Kudos to you and your team for the fantastic effort!
On the other hand, in my humble opinion, not reviewing the 'RIGHT configuration' is a big missed opportunity! There are over a dozen reviews of the Zen 3 model but absolutely zero reviews of the Zen 4 model, particularly in North America. The Zen 3 model came out in H1 2023 and the Zen 4 model came out less than 10 weeks ago in the USA. I'd wager that Zen 3 model likely exists due to AMD's supply chain woes. All things considered, it'd be great if you can bless us with a comparison between the Zen 3 and Zen 4 models. Heck! given the similarities in everything else, it'll also be the perfect opportunity to perhaps do a 7735HS vs 7840HS video.
Outside the purview of this specific laptop, I'd like to bring to your attention the following as I'd like someone of your caliber to call out Lenovo at some point if what I'm saying makes sense:
      - There is a drastic lack of customization options for this laptop even with 7840HS in the USA compared to everywhere else ranging from impactful features such as 4050 dGPU option, 3K screen, RAM flexibility etc all the way down to tidal teal colour options.
-More importantly, Lenovo has taken a bunch of really capable 7840U laptops and smacked shoddy 45%NTSC panels on them. This is the case for most non-gaming laptops affecting several Yoga 7 as well as Thinkpad models of 2023, rendering them unbuyable. In this fashion, Slim Pro 7 is lucky to have the 100%SRGB panel although it's a downgrade by every other metric.
-The Yoga Slim 7 (the perfect laptop for the most regular users) is available anywhere in the world except in North America

@sreeee I haven't read your full comment as I'm filming but... Lenovo only sent out Zen 3 units. That's why reviewers reviewed only that model. I have bought my own Zen 4 model to review

@@JustJoshTechThank you for your reply. I'm excited to watch it when that review comes out. You'll be the first of the A-listers to review it and I'm confident it'll be fantastic. I bought the Zen 4 model for under $900 and I'd not recommend anyone buying any Lenovo Laptop at MSRP.
As for Lenovo sending out Zen 3 machines only, it's very odd to say the least. They're holding off Zen 4 Slim Pro 7 while sending out Slim 7 out to American reviewers although the model isn't available here. Heck, they did not even notify M Moniz that the model will not be made available in the USA. Not sure why Lenovo appears to be severely underplaying their 2023 non-gaming AMD machines in North America.

Thnx for listening to feedback and reviewing this laptop. While I would prefer if you reviewed the 7840HS + 32GB variant, as you correctly mentioned, it still comes with the mediocre screen and speakers. The Radeon 780M is pretty powerful as well (as an IGPU), especially when compared to the Intel Iris Xe G7 with 96EUs, which is grave need of an upgrade :)

All said and done, Lenovo's prices vary wildly with frequent sales, and the model with the newer architecture CPU seems cheaper than the reviewed model from what I could see in the video. I really respect Josh (I am a subscriber after all) so I’m sure he had a good reason but my view is:
*the tidal teal colour looks nice (he commented on the appearance of the grey one being unspectacular)
*Lenovo were offering cheap upgrades to 32GB
*zen 4 version is likely better at a lot of the metrics (even if only a little)
*integrated graphics on 7840HS is good enough for most and comes with non-touch. Both of these up the battery life vs what he tested
My (non-professional) verdict is, he’s right that the β€˜Pro’ marketing is pushing it but if you don’t need discrete graphics, you can get a lighter, longer lasting and cheaper laptop that is for all-rounders. Especially students who can get 15% off directly with Lenovo.

Honestly , a lot of these cons can be avoided if you just spec the laptop right. I personally bought this laptop with 7840HS, 3k display %100 DCI-p3 400 nits, rtx-3050 6gb (I don't need very high graphical power for the purpose of this laptop). I'm not sure if the speakers will be different but it seems like the reviewed laptop is an older version rather than the refreshed new one. The 7735hs was sold as a seperate different laptop rather than a differently specd one for me so maybe the speakers are also different. However, looking at the prices in the comment section makes me jealous, I had to buy it at 1350 euros, but any other alternative mentioned is close to 1.6k - 2k in the Netherlands and similarily priced laptops aren't nearly as good in terms of screen, build and processor with a dedicated GPU. Not a bad review, but I don't think the critique is that justified considering it isn't the 2023 refresh laptop people were asking for and it's probably an older version.

I would as so many others be way more interested in the 7840HS version, especially one with the 4050 rtx.
As a student I found it here in Germany for 1128 € and to me it seems like a standalone in this price range.
And the Display in said model is a 3K, 400 nits, 120 Hz Panel, which also sounds way better then the one you reviewed.
To me it seems to kind of solve all the problems you mentioned with your version… all that at a lower price point!
As an engineering student I need a portable laptop with dedicated graphics for under 1200 € and I really couldn’t find anything else.
So please think about making a follow up video where you review the 7840HS version with the 4050.

The 7735HS CPU (Ideapad pro 5 16") was the only one available from Lenovo in my region (Australia). It's nice to see that the Zen 4 7840U/HS has a nice generational uplift especially on that Framework 13. That said these 7735HS and 3050Ti combos are definitely getting creamed by the newest and latest from AMD, Intel and Apple, but because of that you tend to find them at relatively aggressive discounts. Hopefully all of these Zen 3 models sell out so Lenovo starts selling the much more efficient and performant Zen 4 models, optionally paired with Nvidia 40XX gpus.
Your findings with the screen brightness matched closely with my experience. I thought 350nits would be enough but in a semi-cloudy Australian day its basically impossibe to read even indoors. 400nits+ at the bare minimum for any productivity laptop. Thankfully my workflow doesn't use the trackpad or speakers very often so those are non-issues for me, but they should really just spend the tiny bit more and greatly improve the user experience.

I just bought this machine and I am very impressed with it after years of disappointment from other manufacturers and some thinkpads. However, after opening it up I realized the display hinge is screwed into a plastic part of the upper case. This plastic part is molded into the metal frame and is non repairable. If that plastic breaks (which it likely will after some time) it would be a very expensive repair if you can even find the palmrest part of the chassis for sale. Also, there is no rubber gasket or buffer to prevent the glass display from touching the metal when closed. This could be the Surface laptop 3 all over again with cracked displays. Stupid design choices ruin an otherwise excellent machine.

Hey Josh, the right hinge on my 2 year old IdeaPad Pro 5 16 just tore the plastic frame inside the screen apart while opening the laptop screen normally. I've always been very secure with my laptop. I've been researching this issue, and it seems that all IdeaPad and Yoga and some Legion laptops from Lenovo with a two hinge design suffer from this, with literally hundreds of people online experiencing this problem. Unfortunately, with the majority of these cases Lenovo does not even provide warranty!
I don't know if you're aware of this, but please know if you recommend a laptop from them that it'll most likely only last for 2 years, while for many this occurs even faster.

Our reviews are very intensive and take around 2 weeks to make. The 7840HS version was sold for ~$1,450 for the vast majority of that time. In fact the ending was re-recorded yesterday for the conclusion to take into account the updated updated sales price. Plus AMD and Lenovo probably shouldn't be selling last years Tech badged as though it is a current product, I don't think that is something to be angry at the reviewer for.
The 7840HS would NOT solve everything for this laptop. You still have a dim screen. You still have poor speakers. You still have a bad webcam, and if you are in the USA, you still have very low end dedicated graphics.
Furthermore, all manufacturers could drop their prices for such a huge amount, and their products would immediately become better. We have to review the laptops in the price range they are meant to be sold at.
As I said in the conclusion, if you can find it with the 7840HS version for around $1k like right now on sale its a decent laptop to buy, but when you have all the laptops around this price range, like we do, it doesn't stand out.

I believe the hype is mostly about the non-pro yoga slim 7 gen 8 which is a 13.9mm thick 1.35kg 14.5" notebook with a 3k 90Hz 400nits OLED, a ryzen 7840S, 32gb ddr5, 1tb nvme, (soon) linux drivers and amazing battery life for 1k USD (in europe with student discount). The "tidal teal" version also looks pretty nice and the keyboard is as good as the one on the X1. If you don't need a dedicated GPU it's quite literally the best laptop you can get right now in that price range.

I have the IdeaPad Pro 5 16” from last year with 6800HS and RTX 3050. It’s basically the same laptop as this just bigger. But same specs all around. I got it for $1100 at launch about 1.5 yrs ago. It has its pros and cons but I feel like this Slim 7 Pro is almost the exact same laptop but at the same price with the same chips over an entire tech cycle later…honestly just look for last years model on sale bc that’s what this is. Maybe the Zen 4 model will be better value but idk.

If anyone is wondering about benchmarks for the 7840hs variant, I own one, and have done the tests. Geekbench single core is 2,402, multi core score is 11,654. Cinebench r23 single core is 1,691, multi core score is 15,075. Both tests were done on extreme performance mode while plugged, not overclocked. As for the fan noise while running games, I found that on extreme performance mode it is around 48dB, and on intelligent cooling it is around 42dB. the bottom of the laptop still gets very hot, but the cpu and gpu are effectively cooled and don’t thermal throttle. There are still some things which are pretty bad, like the speakers, camera, and hinge, but for me personally, at only $1200 CAD, I think this is a pretty great deal, and I have been enjoying using this laptop so far. Feel free to ask any more questions if you’d like.

G14 7735HS/4050/QHD at approx 1470$ (Yeah taxes in India are crazy. Thick laptops are cheaper, but I want a thin laptop with good battery and these are the only options)
G14 has much more control over power limits, fans, battery, mux switch, and a better display, but it has those "gaming" looks which I don't like much.
I don't need super high performance, they both have 3yr warranty, 120hz, and can do casual gaming which is enough for me.
Which one should I pick? I am avoiding macbook air (16/256) as it is bad even in casual gaming, also they aren't upgradeable/serviceable (can't afford apple care+). But I might wait for M3 I guess

The things is, I need a dedicated RTX/RX graphics card (Doesn't have to be the latest or the most powerful, just powerful enough, a premiumish build and portable form factor at around the $1000 mark. This automatically eliminated the macbooks, The G14 isn't too bad, but cannot be found at that price. The Zenbook pro 14x looks like the more compelling option, but in the UK, Asus has no variant (that has a graphics card) with a core i7, just the i9 thus driving the cost up. I genuinely still cant find a better deal on paper at this price, for me other than the lenovo.

The speaker section specially, thats just horrendous.
But your ending note is also fit myself and multiple other users as well i think. I don't need something that does 1 specific thing too well. I simply need it to do multiple things just good enough (i'm on a 6th gen intel so maybe there is some bias when i say "just good enough") specially if the 7840 version can be found below $1000.

I think if they had offered a lower priced model, example $899 with Zen 4 + integrated 780M it would make it a better buy since Radeon integrated graphics are better than Iris XE and Zen 4 has a better thermal profile, but at this point I would say 14X has the better deal if you can wait for the sale which should start a week from now.

This video is a perfect example why you should do your own research. In the EU this laptop with the 7840HS, rtx4050, a 400nits 3k 120Hz display only costs 1100€. For comparison the zenbook 14x basemodel costs 1999€ πŸ‘Ž
Edit: the yoga 9i starts at 2100€ which is nearly 2x the price

@@JustJoshTechLenovo is strangely lacking a lot of Zen4 options compared to Europe. On r/AMDlaptops all these Europeans talking about all these Zen4 IdeaPad Pro and Slim Pro laptops just makes me wonder why Lenovo doesn’t sell them here. Especially the ones without a dGPU that would have better thermals and battery life. Casual gamers and creators that look at these laptops are totally fine with AMD’s outstanding 780M.
I wonder if Lenovo has some standing contract with Nvidia in the US market or some stupid business politics thing like that…

@@barmolej For the price I paid I think it's very good. Considering I got it with almost 40% discount I think the configuration is very balanced. The processor is of the 7000 series but the performance are more similar with the old 6800hs. It is still an 8 core-16 thread, so quite fast in my opinion. For the RAM I would have preferred 32 gigs honestly. But again, 16 are still pretty fine. 1 TB hard drive very good. The graphic card can play most of the game at 1080p with good details ad good frame rate, so it's a big plus.
The 3k screen is what I was looking for the most. I have to say the 120hz is more a gimmick and not a killer feature. The screen picrture quality is very good. I would have preferred a glossy panel just because it has a bit more clarity. The color are very saturated and punchy with contrast. I think it's a bit too much so I will calibrate (usually I found most of the screen too dark). I am not so sure about the 3k because of the scaling factor, usually it's better to choose panel with multiple of 2 like 1080p, 2k,4k etc.. just becuase they will scale better with windows. So, the screen is nice, great picture quality, and at 400nits very bright.
But for the same price I think a glossy oled would outperform it.
Last build quality: rock solid. All metal, thin bezel with high screen size yo body ratio. It looks like an apple product. Keyboard is fantastic.

I have the intel version with RTX 4050 and I can’t confirm these points. Only the battery is way worse on intel, like ever πŸ˜‚

I got this laptop with the 7840HS from Lenovo directly for 900 dollars after all sales, coupons, and discounts applied. Even with everything you said, it is an absolute STEAL for such a bargain. Similarly priced slim and lightweight laptops are not nearly as good as a powerhouse as the slim pro 7. The 7840HS is a much better comparison and deal compared to the best buy model. Not to mention looks and feels leagues more premium and professional than the gaming focused laptops. This is not a gaming laptop, it is a hybrid laptop, and it plays that role very well.

This is the only one that has a little of everything. I use mind 7840hs to game while I'm out because my Legion Slim 5 is anything but slim. Yeah you can't crank the shit out of everything but it works fine, I don't need a separate power brick which is super nice. It's kind of it's own thing.
